2011 Kia Sorento
Kia did really well with its Sedona minivan - which was more affordable than many and better-built than most. But the traditional minivan is on the endangered species list; GM and Ford don't sell them anymore and many other automakers (Kia included) are retiring them from their lineups. "Crossover SUVs" are the new in-thing in a familymobile...
2010 Nissan Sentra SE-R & SPEC-V
Really quick - and really powerful - compact sedans and hatches are now being sold by several automakers. Some (like the new MazdaSpeed3) are pushing over 260 hp.  The downside is they're also pushing $23k (or more).  So while Nissan's 177-200 hp Sentra SE-R/SE-R SPEC V is no longer the King Ninja among sporty compacts...
2010 MazdaSpeed3
John Z. DeLorean is credited with having invented the muscle car concept - which basically involved taking an affordable/budget-oriented "normal" car, hopping it up with a go-fast engine and selling the thing at a price young people (and the young at heart) could still afford.  John Z's ghost must be working ast Mazda these days - bec...
2010 Acura ZDX
Cars aren't always or even mostly an entirely rational purchase. If they were, no one would buy a machine like the Acura ZDX. It's pretty big outside - but fairly small inside, with hard to access back seats. It's powerful - but not-so-quick - because its 300 hp engine has to lug around more than 4,400 pounds of steel and glass and plasti...

When the new Sonata appeared in my driveway, shiny black and handsome-looking - I initially thought it was the Genesis, Hyundai's top-of-the-line sedan.  It's that easy to mistake the $19k (to...
2011 Hyundai Sonata
Things have gotten easier on GM-inclined, mid-sized family sedan buyers since the recent "retirement" of Pontiac and Saturn. Where once there were at least three separate GM models to look a...
2011 Chevy Malibu
Ok, so it's nothing much to look at - and nothing particularly special to drive.  But the Toyota Corolla has the one thing that matters more to literally millions of consumers: a reputation fo...
2010 Toyota Corolla
The '60s had muscle cars; the '70s had disco cars. The '80s and '90s had SUVs and crossovers.  So what's the new in thing?  Punchy little cars that are inexpensive to buy and easy on g...

Life in the Slow Lane....

I think the Flouride in the water is doing its thing...  Almost every time I go out, I come up on a car - or an SmooVee - that's doing either just barely the limit and often several MPH below it. The typical offender also likes to slow down and speed up for no apparent reason; the concept of maintaining a flow is beyond them. They'll wander across the double yellow - and not just in the curves. Then jerk the wheel to recover their lane.  And of course the limit itself is already ridiculous. On most roads, it is well below what a competent, alert driver can safely handle. So these slo' mo's doing 3-5 mph below what's posted are actually running (if that's the right word) 10-20 mph below a reasonable cruising along speed.  The main road through my county in rural Virginia is US 221. This is a broad, two-lane...
