Right now, unleaded regular's hovering around $2.70 per gallon - high, but manageable. What if it goes back up to over $3 per gallon - or even $4 - which we now ought to know it could and very well may. Perhaps with next to no notice, too.  Are you prepared for that if it should happen? Many of us - probably most of us - aren't. ...
Can you read a sidewall? What do all those numbers (and letters) really mean? Here's a short primer on tires - and tire-related terminology - that should help you get to know your four friends a bit more intimitately: * Contact PatchAs your tires rotate, only a portion of the total tread is actually in contact with the ground at any ...
Modern cars certainly have their merits, but don't you miss - just as an example - the different steering wheels cars used to have?  I don't just mean model to model, either. I mean within one specific model of car. You used to be able to choose from among several different steering wheel designs, as a way to custom-tailor the car to yo...
New cop cars blend into the crowd
Very soon - and for the first time in living memory - it will be next to impossible to visually pick out cop cars from the crowd.  For years, it was pretty easy to do that. Even without a radar detector, alert drivers knew to slow down when they saw a Ford Crown Victoria (http://64.251.10.3/nimg/2007/04/thum...9894-img_0.jpg) or Chevy I...

Life in the Slow Lane....

I think the Flouride in the water is doing its thing...  Almost every time I go out, I come up on a car - or an SmooVee - that's doing either just barely the limit and often several MPH below it. The typical offender also likes to slow down and speed up for no apparent reason; the concept of maintaining a flow is beyond them. They'll wander across the double yellow - and not just in the curves. Then jerk the wheel to recover their lane.  And of course the limit itself is already ridiculous. On most roads, it is well below what a competent, alert driver can safely handle. So these slo' mo's doing 3-5 mph below what's posted are actually running (if that's the right word) 10-20 mph below a reasonable cruising along speed.  The main road through my county in rural Virginia is US 221. This is a broad, two-lane...
