If a thing is worth doing, then it is worth doing. That seems to be a reasonable calculation. It can be expressed in terms of cost vs. benefit. When the latter exceeds the former then you have a winner. When it is the reverse, you’ve got a (summon Trump voice) loser. You also have something else, if the thing is pursued regardless of the cost – probably paid by others.
You have got a con. Possibly also a cult.
Lately, much of what the federal government prescribes – that is, orders – is characterized by elements of both. For example, even after it became evident that “mask” wearing was doing just shy of nothing (if it did that much) to arrest the spread of a respiratory bug, the federal government became more rather than less adamant about “masking.” The costs imposed – especially as regards the cognitive/social-skills effect on very young children – were ignored. “Benefits” were re-asserted – and clung to – in ever-more-ferocious defiance of accumulating contrary facts.
The same quasi-religious insistence on adherence to an article of faith, once promulgated, can be seen in practically everything the federal government does lately. This is to be expected as habits of mind determine how the world is viewed. If the viewer’s view is based upon objective facts, given due consideration, the pros and the cons weighed – to see which weigh more (and which less) – then the conclusion is usually reasonable. It is also implicitly amenable – to new facts that might alter the cost vs. benefit analysis.
At one time, such considerations were at least taken into consideration as regards what the government did – and ordered us to do.
There was the possibility of changing minds in light of new (or changed) facts. This allowed for and even assured, to a happy extent, the prevalence of sanity guiding things along. 
It is one thing to err, based on erroneous facts. It is another thing to be overtly hostile to facts that challenge erroneous belief. This latter defines the current state of mind – if the latter term ought to be used – of the curious (and dangerous) Torquemadas who occupy the offices of the federal apparat. One cannot reason with these people, for the same reason that Galileo could not reason with the ecclesiastical powers of his time.
Such powers (and seekers of power) look upon reason as the enemy – which of course, it is. For it threatens the power of their faith. This latter is interesting in psychological terms because these Torquemada types are also very often militantly anti-religious, in terms of the usual faiths – i.e., those not based upon faith in government.
The Bolsheviks were murderously intolerant of any faith that challenged the one true faith – i.e., that of the Bolsheviks, in the limitless power of themselves, never to be questioned in the slightest particular.
It is understood, by that kind of mentality, that even to admit the principle of questioning is fatal to the religion. It is why questions are greeted with catcalls – and worse. Hence, “denier” – when a question is raised about whether the votes that were counted had a lawful right to be cast. Or whether it can be shown that forcing healthy children to wear “masks” prevents any of them – or any of us – from becoming sick.
And – the latest thing that must not be questioned – whether forcing almost everyone to give up driving a car with an engine in favor of a battery-powered device will in fact alter the course of what is asserted to be a “changing” climate. This question of course presumes an answer in the affirmative – that the climate is “changing” and that the “change” is unnatural and that it is “changing” on account of an extremely slight – as in fractions of a fraction – increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide.
We are not allowed to ask these questions anymore. Or any questions, as a matter of fact. The “science” is “settled,” they say. A sure sign that it is not. A thing that cannot endure being questioned is an article of faith, not fact.
And the faithful know this, instinctively.
The problem, then, is how to deal with the faithful – when they have the power to impose their faith? One might appeal to the Bill of Rights and the prohibition of state religion but the problem is the refusal of the faith community we’re faced with to acknowledge itself as the faith community it most certainly is.
Put another way, it will not acknowledge that it is insane.
The ecclesiastical powers of Galileo’s time – even the Grand Inquisitor himself – were not insane in that they ardently understood they were believers. The new religionists believe they are the Galileos, defending the facts rather than their faith.
Or so they would have us believe.

Let’s look at the way Palestinians and other Arabs are treated in Israel…
Israel practices official “apartheid” to a much greater degree than that of any other country in the world—the former South Africa included.
Every vehicle driver in Israel proper and in the illegally occupied territories is identified by his or her vehicle license plate as well as personal documentation (identity papers). In Israel proper, and in the illegally occupied territories, Israeli officials make rules and laws as they go along, ignoring the (official) laws (rule of law) already in place.
On a whim, any Israeli official can declare that a building, other structure, planted farmland, water wells, and other basic facilities owned by Palestinians are “illegal” and subject to destruction by Israeli forces.
This even applies to buildings, lands, orchards and crop-producing lands which have been in Palestinian possession for centuries. All the Israeli military has to do is to declare the Palestinian-owned property to be a “military zone”. No other laws or permissions are needed to expropriate land from the Palestinians. Quite often, Palestinians are forced to demolish their own homes in order to avoid being heavily fined.
Water is heavily restricted in Gaza and in the Palestinian areas while jewish settlements can use all the water they want.
Sewage from illegal jewish settlements is routinely dumped on Palestinian land without regard to the pollution problems that it causes.
The old belief that jews poison the wells and farmlands of their perceived “enemies” is actually true, as (illegal) jewish “settlers” routinely poison Palestinian-owned wells and croplands.

No one even asked about a COVID vaccine while I was there. The new push (and we really, really need to wake up to this) is your pronouns. I haven’t stepped inside a doctor’s office for a couple years now and was very surprised on the paperwork that was given to me. The days are gone where it is name, address, insurance carrier. Two pages of what sex were you born, what sex are you now, your pronouns, and how you want to be addressed. I refused to check any box and handed it back to the registration attendant. I am not playing this game. Do not force me to be a participant.

Something else that has become a “faith” (more like a cult) the past few years is FAUCIISM. Early on in the COVID “pandemic”, militant Trump Haters came to worship Tony Fauci as some sort of “Public Health Saint”. I’m not sure if it’s because he “Courageously spoke out against Orange Man” or if there was some other reason. However, over time, it became increasingly obvious that Fauci was NOT the hero the media and many Fauci Worshippers made him out to be. Instead, his diktats were not only ineffective, they were also deadly, one example being his recommending Remdesivir as a treatment for COVID instead of Hydroxychloroquine, HCQ being smeared at the time as (paraphrasing) “Trump’s deadly drug”. He also recommended lockdowns, which itself caused MASSIVE problems that we’re still living with today, and at one point Fauci even recommended wearing 2, 3, 4, or even 5 face diapers, which some people complied with, thinking that doing so gave “extra protection”.
There were also people and media figures who had Fauci candles and photos of him, plus signs that said “Thank you Dr. Fauci!”, “We ❤️ Tony Fauci” or “We trust Dr. Fauci!” However, the REAL STORY of Anthony Fauci is that of him being a modern day Dr. Mengele.
Only thing worse than a retired professional doling out friendly advice is a professional still working way past his prime. The people unwilling to retire and move on are usually the most myopic and inflexable ones out there, using their lifetime of experience as a crutch instead of another data source. I think the last few years of political “leadership” across the spectrum have proven this to be the case. It is a fact that cognative agility fades with age yet it isn’t allowed to be discussed. Trump, Clinton and Biden were never going to be a Mensa candidates even in their prime, and now that they’re far into decline we can clearly see the effects of time on human congnition.
But it is much more than politics. Old fossils like Fauxchi, Warren Buffet and Tim Cook aren’t exactly hitting it out of the intellectual park to say the least. I don’t get WHY would you want to be doing anything like a 9-5 or career climbing in your old age? I’m 49 and I am planning on being at least partly retired by 55.
Work is not your life and it should not define who you are. I can’t wait to be able to do my hobby’s like photography and writing comedy, travel more, do volunteer stuff, read more books, spend time with friends and family and do that all “full time”.
My great uncle and aunt worked their asses off in their 20’s and 30’s, made their money and retired in their 40’s. They were “retired” over half of their lives (my aunt lived past a hundred too)! They lived on a lake, traveled, volunteered for things they supported, just to name a few things. They had a GREAT life! It was largely because they gave the 9-5 the heave-ho way earlier in life than most.
My wife retired at age 51 and seemed a lot happier than when she had been working. I was jealous. Four years later, at age 51, I retired too.
Doing that requires a lot of savings and that requires having no children to send to college. It also requires living on a lower income after retirement, which means a lot less travelling to other countries.
Best decision I ever made: In January 2005 I gave up a six figure income and wearing a suit and tie to work every day. I have all the time in the world for my hobbies now, which include coming here to annoy Eric by disagreeing with him.

I am happy o have been able to make a living doing something I usually enjoy doing (I have my off days, too). When I get out of bed in the morning, I look forward to day rather than pine for for its end.

The second unusual interpretation of “settled” is to claim that always wrong wild guess predictions of the future climate are real science. The claim of a coming global arming crisis started in the last 1950s. The claim was defined with wild guessed numbers in 1979. We are still waiting for the alleged climate crisis to show up. According to my year analysis, the climate crisis is still coming — but it got lost in New Jersey. Which I have done myself several times,when I lived in New York and was driving in New Jersey.
Wrong predictions are not science.

The absurdity is that detailed world-wide climate data has only been available for a very short time in the recent past and present, and it is patently absurd for anyone to make claims [assumptions] about how any variations in recent climate (which are really minuscule in the overall scheme of things) indicates some long-term or permanent trend or change, and claim that it is divergent from the overall long-term weather patterns which typically take hundreds of years to be established and play out.
The climate-alarmists are nothing more than showmen who are using white coats and ‘credentials’ to bamboozle the public into accepting a phony premise which has been established in order to justify political and economic agendas. Convince them that there is a ‘problem’ and then propose a ‘solution’; the ‘solution’ being the re-ordering of society and the world….which ‘just happens to be’ to real agenda. Only now, instead of the masses opposing such an overt agenda and realizing it’s it’s evil intent, they instead gladly cooperate and further it, thinking they doing the humanitarian thing and ‘saving the world’.
And thanks to mass indoctrination via government schools and the media, the majority don’t even realize how they are being lied to, and how contrived and faulty the ‘science’ is.
Take for example the idea we’ve all been taught that tree rings indicate the age of a tree- one ring per year. It has been proven that even that simple notion is false. In reality, tree rings are seasonal. Many rings can be produced in a single year of tree growth when there is abundant moisture or several periods of wet and dry periods during a single year.
Yet, the white-coated magicians/showmen perpetuate the tree ring myth…and few are the wiser. But yet, they want us to believe that even far more complex tricks are legit…and the people buy it, because “it is science which they don’t understand, but the eggspurts know what they’re doing”. (See? See? They have a white coat and a clipboard…and have imbibed much more of the indoctrination, and have taken grants ,strike>to all say the same thing ‘study it’ and ‘all come to the same conclusions’…dontchaknow!”
Years ago, I remember reading an article (that was quickly buried) of a Russian hacker that released information that showed that “global warming” was made up, because the science did not meet up with what they wanted it to say. Whoops. As though the rest of us did not already know that.
The rise of the statistician as scientist is part of the reason for consensus building in the scientific community. If enough people agree on something then it must be true, just like if enough neutrons are hitting nuclei it must be fission, even if we can’t predict any individual neutron path. We’re way past Keplarian math predicting solar eclipses down to the sub-second. Much of it has to do with the population’s limited understanding of particle physics and misapplying the theory across other scientific disciplines. Instead of predicting F=MA, modern science predicts F=MA P>0.3, which makes a pretty big margin for error if you’re trying to move an airplane from stop to V1.
And now we’re designing computers that do the same thing. I’m sure they understand something I don’t, but seems to me the great revolution of computers was programmable calculation giving extremly accurate answers with reliablity. If that becomes no more accurate then the 10 day weather forecast we’re going backward.
Statistical analyses require data
But climate change is a data-free prediction of climate doom.
I say “data free” for two reasons:
(1) There are no data available today for the future climate, and
(2) There has never been a climate crisis from manmade or natural CO2 in the past, so there are no historical data that could have been relevant for the global warming crisis being predicted for the future.
“Climate change” is a data-free prediction of climate doom (aka CAGW) made by people with a terrible track record for long term climate predictions (100% wrong climate predictions for over a century)
This also goes for so-called “endangered species”, the “spotted owl” of the northwest united States being a prime example.
There are genetically identical species of spotted owl outside the boundaries of the areas where the tree-huggers wanted to outlaw lumber harvesting.
Just like climate (weather) which is always changing and not a constant, species are always changing in response to their environments.
Environmentalism has been hijacked by those on the left and have legalized unconstitutional “takings” by putting privately-held property “off-limits” to legal land use.
Meanwhile, hardly noticing, intentionally, the ongoing poisoning of the planet by the likes of DuPont, Bayer/Monsanto, the Gates Foundation, etc.
For the second year in a row, I have yet to see a honey bee on my place, where they used to swarm my fruit trees so heavily I could hear them 50 yards away. And I don’t hear very well.

I used to live in an apartment complex that had hummingbirds flying about until the state of Oregon, through its Public Utility Commission, decided to shove smart meters down everyone’s throats. I used to have a hummingbird feeder at my back porch in my old apartment, which attracted hummingbirds, but after smart meters were installed just a few feet away, the hummingbirds disappeared, leaving me to wonder if the smart meters were emitting something that irritated the hummingbirds. However, all we heard from the state and the local electric company was that the smart meters were “Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaafe”.

Without “global arming, the earth would never have gotten out of the last ice age.
That should be “global warming.”

Surely there must have been some time travelling humans back then setting fire to tarpits and such.
We are in an ice age now. But also in the short period of pleasant climate within an ice age called an interglacial. The current Holocene interglacial started about 11.550 years ago.
A little known fact is that from 5000 to 9000 years ago there was a warmer period than today called the Holocene Climate Optimum.
Various climate reconstructions estimate the average temperature back then averaged at least +1 degree warmer than today.
Even the IPCC agrees with that estimate.
That past climate, which was one degree C. warmer than today, was called an Optimum, meaning it was very good news.
But now we have the IPCC claiming just the opposite.
They claim if the average temperature increases +1 degree C. (from today) in the future, matching 5000 to 9000 years ago, that will NOT be another climate Optimum.
That would be a climate Emergency.
Which means the IPCC has contradicted themselves.
If +1 degree C. warmer than today’s climate in the past was good news, then how can +1 degree C. warmer than today’s climate in the future be bad news?
That’s how the leftist IPCC “thinks”.
