Fitting Song Choices

As I was finishing my workout this morning I kept catching glimpses of the election results on the various distracting televisions in the gym.

The talking heads on the tee-vees were gaggling about how this will all play out, how the R’s will work with the D’s, the changes Tom Wolf will bring, etc…

As I started my car and turned the radio onto a local rock station; this song was a few minutes in:

I thought to myself it was very fitting and started my short drive to the office. But then the next song started and it was this:

I chuckled out loud, I am sure it is just a coincidence but those 2 songs playing back to back at that time made me think: “He surely has a sense of humor.”

  1. Eye on the TV
    Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be
    Like
    Killed by the husband”
    “Drowned by the ocean”
    Shot by his own son
    She used a poison
    In his tea
    And kissed him goodbye
    That’s my kind of story
It’s no fun until someone dies

    Don’t look at me like
    I am a monster
    Frown out your one face
    But with the other
    Stare like a junkie
    Into the TV
    Stare like a zombie

While the mother holds her child
    Watches him die
    Hands to the sky crying,
    “Why, oh why?”

Cause I need to watch things die, from a distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, don’t lie

Why can’t we just admit it?
Why can’t we just admit it?
We won’t give pause until the blood is flowing
    Neither the brave nor bold
Were writers of the stories told
We won’t give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die… from a good safe distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so

Why can’t we just admit it?

    Blood like rain come down
    Drum on grave and ground

    Part vampire
    Part warrior
    Carnivore and voyeur
    Still have the transmitter
    Synched to the death rattle

La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie (x4)

    Credulous at best
    Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head of your hippie haze, and give a listen
Shouldn’t have to say it all again

The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive, so it is, so it’s always been

    We all feed on tragedy
It’s like blood to a vampire

Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
    Much better you than I

Now that’s the good shit. Tool and A Perfect Circle have so many songs that just fit any angry/cynical situation you are ever in.

    • I couldn’t vote.

      Mark Warner – or Gillespie?

It’s like being offered the “choice” of eating horse shit… or cow shit.

      How about neither!

        • Because of the direct democracy stuff on the ballot I went to vote ‘no’ on it. Principle being if the government wants it, it can’t be good. It was a rare instance where I could actually say ‘no’ to being ruled (more) on a ballot IMO. Then because I was there ‘no’ for retaining all the judges. Then libertarian (none of the above) party on all offices one was running for. Everything else I abstained from.

While strict non-voters would not approve, I think what I did is acceptable given that I used to the vote to object to being ruled over rather than consenting to it. Of course it did absolutely no good.

      • The sheeple will tell you that if you don’t vote for either horse shit or cow shit, you have no right to complain about having to eat shit. That is one of the most deeply ingrained myths sustaining Western fascistic socialism in general and the USSA in particular. The opposite is in fact true: if you participate in the charade of voting, you have condoned the system and thereby consented to eat shit, thereby forfeiting your right to complain.

That said, I can envision limited circumstances in which voting in a local election would be a good idea. It would have to be local enough that you were personally familiar with the candidates and they would at least recognize you if they saw you on the street. And one of the candidates would have to be truly in line with your views on how the particular local office holder should conduct the business of the office. Probably won’t be happening in my lifetime.

    • nor did I and i was proud as well, especially when asked about it at work and explaining to the horrified hoi polloi my opinion of something that they hold in reverence.

a perfect example of the nonsense that is democracy is the fact that (R) Michael Grimm was re-elected.

    • I did vote – I’ve been doing it so long that I have not yet broken the habit. But I focused on the County elections.

      • I think Australia’s the only (erm.. “free”) country on the planet where voting’s compulsory.

The whole mess is a catch-22. You’re not allowed to vote unless you’re enrolled. You MUST enrol at age 18.

I’ve only ever heard of fines for non-voting, not non-enrolling.

In any case, voting is a trust issue. Regardless, no law can force anyone to support or join a man/woman/person/party/organisation, trust or otherwise.

Amerikah seems to have understood this basic right from the outset. One of our public broadcasters Derryn Hinch has been through this wringer a few times in court. I’m not sure what arguments he used but if he was fined then his shyster either ain’t that clever or is in on the scam. I believe the latter.

I’ve never enrolled, so they’ll have a hard time catching up with me on that issue alone.

  3. Rainbow also had another – Kill The King (not by Megadeth). Makes me want to warm up my guitar this arvo:

Danger, danger, the Queen’s about to kill
There’s a stranger, stranger, and life about to spill
Oh no, move me out of harm
    I need a spell and a charm
    Fly like the wind
I’m no pawn, so be gone, speed on and on
    Kill the king
    Tear him down

    Kill the king, yeah
    Strike him down

Power, power, it happens every day
Power, devour, all along the way
Oh no, move me out of harm
    I need a spell and a charm
    And fly like the wind
I’m no pawn, so be gone, speed on and on
    Kill the king

Treason, treason, the spectre looms again
Treason, reason, the realm is safe and then
Oh no, move away from harm
    I need a spell and a charm
    Fly like the rainbow
I’m no pawn, so be gone, speed on and on

    Kill the king
    Tear him down
    Kill the king, yeah
    Got to take his crown
    Crown

    Kill the king
    He’ll rule no more
    Strike him dead
    The people roar

    Kill the king, yeah
    Take his head
    Down, down, down, down
    Oh, kill
    Oh, kill
    Oh, oh

  4. Now if they’d just finished up with these two songs:

    Megadeth’s Symphony of Destruction
The people that vote act just like this verse from the above song:

    Just like the pied piper,
    lead rats through the street,
    we dance like marionettes,
    swaying to the Symphony,
    of destruction.

There can be no doubt that voting is the act of the voting person planning the destruction of the rights of another.

    Black Sabbath’s War Pigs!
The name speaks for itself however my favorite parts are.

    Politicians hide themselves away
    They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor.

    and

Day of judgement, god is calling,
on their knees the war pigs crawling.
    Begging mercy for their sins,
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings…Oh lord, yeah!

    • Thanks David. I was also thinking of Symphony.

How about Stargazer by Rainbow, which is also relevant to the blind allegiance to any cult (something Clover doesn’t grasp):

High noon, oh I’d sell my soul for water
Nine years worth of breakin’ my back
There’s no sun in the shadow of the wizard
See how he glides, why he’s lighter than air
      Oh I see his face!

      Where is your star?
Is it far, is it far, is it far?
      When do we leave?
      I believe, yes, I believe

In the heat and the rain
      With whips and chains
      To see him fly
      So many die
We build a tower of stone
      With our flesh and bone
      Just to see him fly
      But don’t know why
      Now where do we go?

Hot wind, moving fast across the desert
We feel that our time has arrived
The world spins, while we put his dream together
A tower of stone to take him straight to the sky
      Oh I see his face!

      Where is your star?
Is it far, is it far, is it far?
      When do we leave?
      Hey, I believe, I believe

In the heat and the rain
      With whips and chains
      Just to see him fly
      Too many die
We build a tower of stone
      With our flesh and bone
      To see him fly
      But we don’t know why
Oh, now where do we go?

All eyes see the figure of the wizard
As he climbs to the top of the world
No sound, as he falls – instead of rising
Time standing still, then there’s blood on the sand
      Oh I see his face!

      Where was your star?
Was it far, was it far?
      When did we leave?
We believed, we believed, we believed

      In heat and rain
      With the whips and chains
      To see him fly
      So many died
We built a tower of stone
      With our flesh and bone
      To see him fly

      But why
      In all the rain
      With all the chains
      Did so many die
      Just to see him fly?

Look at my flesh and bone
      Now look, look, look, look,
Look at his tower of stone
      I see a rainbow risin’
      Look there, on the horizon
And I’m coming home, coming home, I’m coming home

      Time is standing still
      He gave back my will
      Oh oh oh ohh
      Going home
      I’m going home

      My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
      But it’s not home
      But it’s not home
      Ohh

      Take me back
He gave me back my will
      Oh oh oh ohh

      Going home
      I’m going home

      My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
      But it’s not home
      But it’s not home
      Ohh

      Take me back
      Take me back
      Back to my home
      Oh, oh, ohh

    • Well before I became aware, I remember how I thought the people who liked that Black Sabbath music were demented and strange, especially the people who liked Iron Maiden’s ‘Run to The Hills’.

      Funny how things change.

      • Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple were some of my faves in my formative years, although meanings in the lyrics have changed with age as they do.

Since then it’s been Dire Straits, ZZTop, Noiseworks, Ozzy Osbourne, Joe Satriani, Rainbow (70’s) and Gary Moore, but mainly for the guitar which I began playing in ’85.

  5. Doesn’t matter who they are or proclaim to be, whether D’s or R’s, neither of them are qualified – let alone fit – to run a bath let alone a country.

Let’s make a song outta those lyrics 🙂

    • If I leave here tomorrow
      Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now
      ‘Cause there’s too many places
      I’ve got to see

But, if I stayed here with you, (D or R) girl
Things just couldn’t be the same
‘Cause I’m as free as a bird now
And this bird, you can not change

And the bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
      Lord knows, I cant change
Bye, bye, baby it’s been a sweet love

      Yeah, yeah
Though this feeling I can’t change
But please don’t take it so badly
      ‘Cause the Lord knows
      I’m to blame
