One of the reasons for the popularity of crossover SUVs is that there are so many crossover SUVs already out there. If you’re one of the few who’s still driving a car, you probably feel surrounded – and invisible.'16 Cherokee lead

You’re down low – they’re up high.

You can’t see.

They can.

Buying a crossover SUV yourself is thus a kind of defense against other crossover SUVs – like carrying a gun (or at least, mace) in a bad neighborhood.

But in some cases, you also get something else.

And that’s what makes this Jeep Cherokee interesting.

The Cherokee is Jeep’s medium-small crossover SUV – a step up in size and capability from the entry-level Compass and Patriot and other light-duty crossover SUVs – and a replacement for the less-than-successful Liberty and Commander models.

Unlike almost all the other vehicles in its class, the Cherokee is available with a fairly large six cylinder engine – and can pull fairly serious weight (4,500 lbs. which is best in class).

And unlike all the other vehicles in its class, it offers a 4WD system (with five driver-selectable modes and a 56:1 crawl ratio) that’s a cut above the light-duty AWD systems offered in rival crossover SUVs.

Prices begin at $23,395 for the base Sport trim with FWD and 2.4 liter engine. A top-of-the-line Trailhawk with Active Drive II 4WD, chassis upgrades, M/S-rated tires and a 3.2 liter V6 stickers for $32,740.

In between are Latitude and Altitude and Limited trims.

Possible cross-shops include the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Tribeca and other medium-small crossover SUVs in the same general price bracket. However, none of these others offers the extra capability you can get in the Cherokee – or for that matter, a V6 engine upgrade.


The Jeep’s Uconnect interface now features Siri EyesFree compatibility and the 8.4-inch LCD touchscreen gets a few tweaks, including a “drag and drop” menu and a Do Not Disturb function for Bluetoothed cell phone calls.


More off-road (and snow-day) capability than other crossovers.

You do not have to buy the V6 to get the rugged Active Drive II system.

Most towing capability(4,500 lbs.) in the class.

The Cherokee is available with either a four or a six and three potential drive layouts: front-wheel-drive, a light-duty Active Drive I AWD system similar to what’s available in other crossovers… and Jeep’s unique Active Drive II system, which is a notch above what’s available in other crossovers.'16 Cherokee 2.4 engine

A real plus is that you can mix-match the engines and drive types. Both the four and the six are available with either of available Active Drive layouts as well as FWD. However, the Trailhawk model comes only with the Active Drive II system and the base Sport comes only with the four cylinder engine. If you want the V6, you have to step up to the Altitude or Latitude (or Trailhawk) trims.

The “Tigershark” four displaces 2.4 liters and makes 184 hp and 171 ft.-lbs. of torque.

It is paired with a nine-speed automatic and your choice of front-wheel-drive, Active Drive I or Active Drive II.

The Active Drive I system is an all-wheel-drive system similar to what’s available in other crossovers. Engine power is automatically routed to the wheels with the most traction.'16 Cherokee active drive

The Active Drive II system features a two-speed power transfer unit that functions much like the two-speed transfer case in a truck-type four-wheel-drive system. Which is why Jeep refers to the system as 4WD rather than AWD.

It’s not bogus.

The Active Drive II system can be locked by the driver in 4-Low mode, which provides a 2.92 gear reduction for low-speed slogging and pulling. Crawl ratios vary depending on the engine (56:1 with the four and 47.8:1 with the V6) but regardless, the system’s got more guts than anything short of a truck-type 4WD set-up.

The Active Drive I system features driver-selectable programming via a rotary knob on the center console for Snow, Sand/Mud as well as Sport and Automatic. This is a cut above, capability-wise. Sport – and Snow – modes for the transmission (and other calibrations) are fairly common in crossovers and cars generally. But the Cherokee’s Sand/Mud mode is a function not many (if any) others offer.'16 Cherokee gauge cluster

The Active Drive II system adds a Rock (crawl) mode and if you buy the Trailhawk, you’ll also get Active Drive Lock (a locking rear differential) and a bevy of heavy-duty/off-road upgrades such as underbody skid plates, tow hooks and additional ground clearance (8.6 inches, total).

You can expect to get to 60 in about 8 seconds with the 2.4 engine and FWD, a decent time for a vehicle of this type. Fuel economy  with this combo is 22 city/31 highway – also decent for a vehicle of this type (and a huge improvement over the previous-generation Cherokee, which posted a Hummer-esque 15 city, 20 highway).

It should also be pointed out that the Cherokee’s base engine matches – or beats – the performance (and matches the mileage) of the only-available engines in competitor crossovers like the Honda CR-V (2.4 liters, 185 hp, 23 city/31 highway and 9.5 seconds to 60) and the Toyota RAV4 (2.5 liters, 176 hp, 24 city/31 highway and 9.3 seconds to 60).'16 Cherokee mud

The base-engined Cherokee’s also much stronger than the base engined Ford Escape (2.5 liters, 168 hp) and stronger still than the Escape with its optional 1.6 liter turbo engine (178 hp). To get more-than-Cherokee hp in the Ford, you have to jump two engines up the ladder, to the Escape’s top-of-the-line 2.0 turbo four . . . at which point you’re also looking at much more coin than Jeep charges for the base Cherokee.

One of the few current cross-shops that comes with a stronger standard engine is the Hyundai Sante Fe Sport (2.4 liters, 190 hp) and that just barely. The Sante Fe Sport’s base price – $24,950 – also happens to be $1,555 higher than the Jeep’s base price.'16 Cherokee V6

None of the Jeep’s rivals offer – let alone come standard with – a nine-speed gearbox, either.

The Cherokee’s trump card, though, is its optionally available 3.2 liter, 271 hp V6. Very few vehicles in this segment offer more than a four (sometimes turbo’d, sometimes not) chiefly because there is incredible pressure emanating from Washington to get every single new vehicle’s average fuel economy number into the mid-30s by 2016. It is hard for a six to make that cut. That’s why they’re going away – at least, as mass-market powerplants.

But thanks to the Jeep’s advantageous nine-speed gearing the V6’s gas mileage is also decent: 21 city, 29 highway with FWD and 21 city/28 with Active Drive I. That’s almost as good as the 2.4 liter engine’s mileage.'16 CHerokee towing

The V6 Cherokee’s numbers are also much better than those posted by larger, V6 powered crossover SUVs like the Chevy Equinox (16 city, 23 highway with AWD).

It’s quick, too. All out, it can get to 60 in about 6.8 seconds.

The Jeep’s max tow rating of 4,500 lbs. is much stouter than the typical 1,500-3,500 pound max that’s typical in this segment.


There is ample power – and performance – with either engine. One of the substantive appeals of this Jeep vs. models like the CR-V and RAV4 and even the Ford Escape (with its standard engine) is that they are under-engined and several of them don’t even offer an upgrade engine to deal with the power/performance deficit.'16 Cherokee road 1

In the Jeep, the available six ups the ante. But you don’t have a losing hand if you stick with the four.

The nine-speed automatic is an interesting item. Why nine speeds? For the same reason semi trucks have that many (and more) forward speeds: Leverage. To accelerate the vehicle without winding out the engine – and to cut down engine RPM to the lowest level feasible once you’re up to cruising speed. In order to have a really deep top gear overdrive (eight and ninth in this case) without a bog/soft spot in between that top gear and the next lowest gear, you need a gradual series of “steps” down – and up. That’s why, in this case, the transmission has another three gears in between fifth and top gear ninth.'16 Cherokee road 2

Usually, the transmission behaves like a “normal” five or six speed automatic. The upshifts from fifth through ninth are so closely spaced as to be almost imperceptible. And the computer exercises absolute control – even when the gear lever is in manual mode. You can move the shift lever over to the left and tap it down or up – and the dashboard indicator will change from 9th to 8th or from 7th to 9th – but the computer will shift on its schedule and is deaf to your inputs. It will allow some manual control of up or downshifts from first through fifth, but the computer is The Decider here, too.

Sometimes, though, there is some Shift Weirdness.

You’re trundling along in ninth and floor the accelerator to pass a dawdler. It is a long way from ninth to passing gear – which is fifth or fourth at the least. It takes a moment longer to drop from 9th to 5th or 4th than it does from 6th to 4th (as with a conventional six-speed box). So, there is sometimes a slight but significant pause before the onrush of acceleration. Remember: This transmission is designed primarily for economy, not performance.'16 Cherokke gearbox

 This is the price we pay to get our hands on that V6.

Without the efficiency edge conferred by the nine-speed, it’s not likely it would be in the lineup at all.

This Cherokee will also corner not clumsily – something no previous Cherokee could do and still keep all four wheels in contact with the pavement.

It also feels big and heavy and reassuring solid. Which it is. Though nominally a compact, a 4WD Cherokee V6 weighs just over 4,100 lbs. But all this unsprung mass is very effectively sorted by the suspension. You also enjoy that pleasantly authoritative, commanding view of the road that comes with being higher off the ground than surrounding traffic.

One deficit is the Jeep’s wide (37 foot) turning circle. You don’t notice this until you attempt a tight U turn (and then you do). This is one of the few functional compromises that attend the Jeep’s greater-than-others capabilities.

It goes with the territory.

The Cherokee’s front end is concept car radical. Cat’s-eye slits for eyes – and a toothy grille. It reminds me of the old Isuzu VehiCross …  but in a good way.

Jeep did not carry this stylistic daring beyond the nose clip, however. The Cherokee’s flanks and tail are conventionally crossover. Nothing unattractive – just a little ordinary and something of a letdown after viewing the Jeep from head on.

Size-wise, the Cherokee, at 182 inches long overall, splits the difference between the true compacts in this segment like the Escape and CR-V (178.1 and 178.3 inches long overall, respectively) and mid-sized models like the Chevy Equinox (187.8 inches long overall).'16 Cherokee rearview

It is also wider than all of these rivals – 73.2 inches vs. 71.6 for the CR-V, 72.6 for the RAV4, 72.4 for the Escape and 72.5 for the Equinox – and this gives it visual hunkiness the others (especially the Escape and CR-V) lack.

Legroom in both rows is pretty good – 41.1 inches up front and 40.3 in the second row. Pretty balanced might be a better way to put it. The Escape has more legroom up front (43.1 inches) but at the cost of a much tighter squeeze in the second row (36.8 inches).

Interestingly, the Jeep’s interior is about as spacious (passenger room-wise) as the physically larger (mid-sized) Chevy Equinox’s. Though the Equinox is almost half a foot longer, it only has 41.2 inches of legroom up front and 39.9 in the second row. However, it has 31.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind its second row – and this brings us to the Cherokee’s sole objective packaging deficit relative to its rivals:

A shrunken trunk.

Technically, of course, it’s not a trunk. Crossovers don’t have trunks. They have cargo areas. And the Cherokee’s is smaller-than-average: 24.8 cubic feet with the second row up and 54.9 cubes maximum, with the second row folded flat. The much smaller overall CR-V has 37.2 cubes behind its second row – and 70.9 cubes total. The RAV4? 38.4 cubes behind its second row – and 73.4 if you fold them down. And the Ford Escape? 34.3 cubes behind the second row and 68.1 with them folded.'16 Cherokee cargo

Remember: All three of these models are smaller overall – yet they have significantly more cargo carrying room.

Still, the Jeep is a crossover, which means the space it has is more usable than a conventional car’s trunk. Drop the second row and you have room enough for lots of stuff. You just have to drop the second row to use that room.

Jeep does provide some additional storage space, though. It’s under the seats. The bottoms pull up – and beneath them, you’ll find a pretty good-sized (and out of sight) storage cubby. More cars ought to have this feature – but few do.

Unusual standard equipment includes an SD card reader, in addition to a USB port. You can order useful additional equipment such as heated windshield wipers (part of the Cold Weather package, which also includes heated front seats) a two-piece or panorama glass sunroof, and a perpendicular as well as parallel-parking assistant.

Trailhawk models come with a M/S-rated 17 inch wheel and tires package, tow hooks and underbody skid plates – in addition to the enhancements for the Active Drive II system previously described.

A new addition to the roster is a collision mitigation system that can be ordered with Latitude and Limited trims. It will brake the vehicle automatically if you don’t react to a potential wreck situation in time.

There’s nothing to indicate Jeep is actively considering it, but I can’t help imagining what the Cherokee might be like with a version of the 3 liter diesel V-6 that’s currently available in the Grand Cherokee. Scale it down a bit (420 ft.-lbs. of torque might be a bit much in the smaller/lighter Cherokee) and tune it for say 40 on the highway.

It ought to be doable.

And it would a nice poke-in-the-government’s eye. Beat their 35.5 MPG CAFE number – without killing off vehicles like this.

    Enjoyed the review….
    Wondering if you would consider the Dodge Durango inlieu of the Jeep GC I found the Durango Limited very practical and comfortable.

    I would buy it over the Jeep products even if they share lots of components.

    Dodge and Jeep has one problem that I am reading about… the electronic module that powers most things in the auto, fails quite often and is expensive to replace.
    Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) is the module in question.

    Wish you would spend some time on the different problem and issues that certain models are having. I read about the features and niceties of each auto in your reviews but not the problems.
    At lease give us a link or something about the different problems, which would have some bearing on what to buy.

  2. Quick point: Most of that 4100 lbs is going to be sprung weight, not unsprung weight. The sprung weight is whatever is riding on the suspension. That means everything but the wheels/tires and a few suspension bits and pieces.

    Regarding the 9-speed transmission, I’ve been reading a lot of negatives about it both in this vehicle and in others. Its raison d’etre is gas mileage, yes, but it’s a very compromised solution. I forget which gear change is the problem, but crossing one particular gear change, upshifting or downshifting, takes an inordinately long period of time compared to other gear changes on either side of it. This is an inherent design limitation and not something that software has been able to compensate for. Unfortunately, this shift happens right in the highway speed range, so you’ll be encountering it a lot.

    On the plus side, one other advantage of the 9-speed is that you can get a much broader gear ratio range than you can with, say, a CVT, which many of the Cherokee’s competitors use. A CVT may have a nearly infinite number of gear ratios, but they are all between a predefined minimum and maximum ratio. That range is currently fairly limited due to the technology behind the CVT. A 9-speed, on the other hand, can afford to have a really low first-gear for off-the-line acceleration and can have a crazy high final gear(s) to eke out the best mpg and, as you mentioned, not leave dead spots in the power in the middle ranges. Thus an otherwise equally-engined/powered/weighted 9-speed will out-accelerate a 6-speed transmission or a CVT. I have seen this pointed out with the new Honda Pilot which has the same engine but comes with a 6-speed or 9-speed (same as Cherokee) transmission depending on trim level, and the 9-speed is a little bit faster.

    This particular design, though, is not particularly good. As I understand it, it is very much like mating up a 5-speed and a 4-speed transmission and the hand-off between the two is awkward and delayed. Also, you will rarely, if ever, see 9th gear in the US. It depends on what shift points are programmed in, but I believe the trans won’t voluntarily shift into 9th in some of the vehicles using this transmission until you’re over 85mph. It just depends on the programming and testing. Thus, in reality, you may only effectively have an 8-speed transmission that shifts poorly.

  3. I have been looking at small SUVs and am continually surprised at how high you *don’t sit* in the newer ones. The Forester looks like a big high tank but the seats are lower than my Caravan’s. Same with the Liberty, CRV, Rav4 and Escape. Besides that they all look like each other now with the swept-back rear end.

    What gives, I wonder? People like to sit high and the older boxy SUV shape was kinda expected.

  4. Eric, between the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and the Renegade, which would be your choice for normal driving but going on single track/mountain road climbs a few times a year? Light towing (IE: pop-up or Scamp trailer) ? Best bang for the buck?

    I’m planning on keeping it for at least a decade, unless Uncle decides I can’t have one of those either! I have an Audi A3 TDI that I love, but I need to have a contingency plan ready just in case.

    • Hi Eric,

      I like everything about the Cherokee except its nine-speed automatic. The GC has Chrysler’s eight-speed box, which (based on my experience with it) isn’t plagued by Shift Oddities such as surging forward when descending a grade. I have concerns (and this is just my conservatism cropping up) about the long-term reliability of the ZF nine-speed in the Cherokee.

      The GC is considerably more expensive, but it’s also inherently more capable which is a function of it being more rugged and so – probably – more durable, long term. The base 3.6 is very powerful (295 hp) and, of course, you can up that to 360 hp and V8 power.

      Or, go diesel. I would be tempted.

      Lots of subjectives here, though. I recommend taking a test drive in each to see how they feel to you – and then making a decision based on that factored with their relative capabilities and other objective pros and cons.

    • I’ll add a few more thoughts on to Eric’s comment.

      The Grand Cherokee is a much more expensive proposition, though it’s bigger and has a much nicer interior. It’s also been around longer than the new Cherokee, and is already past its mid-cycle refresh. That means it should be, theoretically, more reliable than the Cherokee, which is relatively new. Styling is subjective, but I personally like the GC styling and deplore the Cherokee styling. The GC has a better tow rating by a substantial margin than the Cherokee, so you’ll be better set for the future if you want a bigger trailer. Lastly, the GC has an optional diesel, which would clinch it for me in that comparison, though that’s an extra-cost option. Not only will you get comparably good fuel mileage to the Cherokee or Renegade, you’ll get much greater range and easier towing. Plus, diesels typically last longer than gas engines. The GC wins in comfort, style, practicality, towing, and probably reliability.

      As for “value,” the Cherokee might be the winner. It’s so much cheaper than a GC that this alone puts it way out in front, and it’s not really much more than a Renegade. You wouldn’t need the TrailHawk trim for what you’re proposed usage scenarios are, so that’ll save a good bit of money, too. Since it’s newer, though, reliability may be an issue. Towing, though substantial for its class, is likely going to be a weak point with that 9-speed transmission, too. It’s too complicated and will likely be shifting back and forth a lot, especially since I don’t think it has a proper tow/haul mode.

      The Renegade is probably the least interesting of the three for your scenario. It’s basically a Fiat with Jeep body panels. Considering reliability, the only mark to consistently do worse in the US than Jeep is Fiat. They are the bottom two on most reliability measures. Now consider that overall vehicle reliability has improved, so it’s hard to say how much better this might be than, say, an average 1990 vehicle, but I wouldn’t expect it to last 10 years, especially considering it is the cheapest Jeep in the lineup. That said, it’s surprisingly good offroad, especially in TrailHawk form, and it has a decent amount of interior volume and comfort.

      I’d step up to the GC diesel myself if I wanted a 10+ year ownership experience, but that might be out of your price range. A mid-range Cherokee would probably be a distant second option, but cost a whole lot less.

  5. Trundling along in ninth gear doesn’t happen all that much. The torque curve for a small engine pulling a heavy chassis just doesn’t allow for much low rpm operation except under ideal conditions, such as government tests for exceeding corporate fleet economy standards. Towing will be a nightmare unless the electronics keep a tight handle on heat build-up and engine output. A well geared six speed would do the same job with less mass, complexity, expense. Nine sounds better than six?

    There is a lot to be said for conventional styling. Pacer and Aztek and Edsel were certainly edgy and dramatic for their time, all synonymous with hideous. The Jeep styling is pleasant and modern. There isn’t much useable volume in that package. What good is a station wagon (XUV, SUV or whatever the PC acronym of the day) without capacity? That Jeep is smaller inside than a VW Sportwagen. Me thinks this is a style and status UV, worthy of a short term lease rather than long term ownership.

      The nine speed is, as you note, chiefly there for fractional economy gains at the fleet (CAFE) level. But what else can they do?

      I agree with you on the other points – but we’re in the minority, apparently, as this is one of Jeep’s best-selling models right now!

  6. How comfortable are the seats with the under-cushion storage? IIRC, when Chrysler first introduced this on their minivans, the edges of the lift-up portion were not the best to sit on.

    I’ve seen a few of these around town, and IMO the Trailhawk edition in a dark color looks the best, probably because it minimizes the visual impact of the squinty turn signals.

    Something I wish Jeep would do is spell out all the differences between their AWD/4WD systems both on the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee (AFAIK the Wrangler just offers the one). Just too hard to figure out as it is – if they had a chart that said the Active Drive II system was the one with a locking differential, that’d be really informative.

      • By coincidence, a contractor at work has one as a rental car this weekend. As a rental, it’s the Latitude edition, not the much-nicer Trailhawk. Riding in the back seat to lunch today was not bad. Space was tight since the contractor is a big guy, so the driver’s seat was all the way back. The rear shoulder-belt mount was too low for me and was uncomfortable (but I’m 6′).

        It has a backup camera, but it got shown on one of the smallest LCD displays I’ve seen in a while (half the size of the one in your photo). It had the four-cylinder and the 9-speed automatic, and no real complaints (even with four of us in there). I know the ZF-sourced transmission has it’s shift-quality issues (inherent in it’s design), but I didn’t notice any uneven shifts. The one thing I did notice was some front wheel slip when pulling out into traffic from a parking lot. But the brake-based anti-slip activated and it was fine a second later.
