You know, I’ve never been a soccer fan and I don’t watch soccer or most other spectator sports (though I like women’s volleyball for certain reasons), but I did like playing soccer as a kid. It never came across that it was a girls sport in my experience. Unlike futbol Americano, however, soccer seemed to have much less in the way of rules and annoying idiosyncrasies. You attempt to kick the ball into the prescribed goal. That was about it.
Regarding the metric system, I will have to disagree, especially when it comes to its utility in science and engineering. If you’re a scientist, doing your calculations using the English system would be a nightmare. The metric system is quite superior for this purpose. Yes, calling your engine a “350” sounds better than a “5.7 liter”, but using the metric system and “SI” units saves a create deal of pounding on the calculator if you’re a chemist or physicist, doubtless.
Well, football does connect the foot with the ball, which is actually what happens in ‘soccer.’ By that light, American football should properly be called handball. 🙂
I played organized soccer for years. It didn’t harm me (I think).
And if you study any scientific field into university, you’re going to learn metric, like it or not. Best bet is to get comfortable with both systems, as I had to do. Metric is actually more intuitive once you get used to it, even if it ain’t ‘Murrican.’

You are forgetting that pro Soccer (the “NASL”) was a pretty big deal in the late 70s, early 80s. Think Pele and the Cosmos. They selling out Giants stadium and places like that. During that time of my youth, say ’79-83, in NJ everyone I knew played soccer. There were Summer and Fall school and private leagues. The NASL disbanded by ’86 or so and the fervor for Soccer died down but never went away completely. There were still school and “travel” teams. I never recall it being called “futbol” back then, though. That’s new and grating and foreign in the way you described it today.
They ‘were’ selling out Giants Stadium…
There’s a a good documentary about the rise and fall of NASL in the 70’s-early 80’s called “Big Time Soccer” and a good one about The NY Cosmos in the same time period called “Once in a Lifetime.”
