Red Hatters and Maskers

At this point, it is reasonable to regard anyone you see who is still wearing a red hat as psychologically similar to the people still wearing maaaaaaaaaasks. As in similarly damaged. Similarly blinkered. They are both in the refusal-to-see-the-truth camp – because the truth and the facts (as Clover likes to say) are at odds with their beliefs. They are both still believers in the thing that gives them comfort – and they do not want to hear anything that contradicts their beliefs.

The masker has eyes but cannot see that almost no one else is still wearing masks and that death is very obviously not in the air. That the 99-plus percent of people who do not “mask” are not dying or even getting the sniffles – and if they do get them, they recover from them, just as people have always done. They cannot see that mask-wearing is irrational and also degrading.

It is the same as regards the people still wearing the red hat. Like the maskers, they refuse to come to terms with the awful truth that they got rolled. That they bought a steaming load of bullshit. They are both much more likely to be hostile toward anyone who points this out than they are toward the cretins who dumped the load of bullshit in their laps.

They defend the bullshit – and the bullshitters.

Here is an example. A reader of mine took issue with my calling bullshit on Trump. I went through a short list of promises made that Trump not only hasn’t kept but egregiously about-faced on.

I wrote: “How about the repeated promises about not getting into new wars in the Middle East?”

He replied: Never happened. What he said was forever wars.

Come again?

It echoes of I did not have sex with that woman, doesn’t it? Sure. Getting head in the Oval Office isn’t “sex.” It all depends on what your definition of “sex” is. And what’s going on in Iran right now isn’t a war in the Middle East. Never mind that Trump uses exactly that word – war – to describe it, much to the annoyance of his paladins.

I wrote: “How about the assurance that he’d end the war in Keeeeeeeeev the day after he got inaugurated?”

He replied: That did happen. What did not happen was anyone asking him, How? At least that intrepid woman asked Biden how he intended to put an end to Nordstream II.

Except of course the war over Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeev continues to go on, like the war with Iran. Trump ended nothing – except the decline in gas prices that had been going on until he decided to start the war with Iran.

I wrote: “How about the promise he’d cut energy costs in half?”

He replied: Half is a lot. I think we’ll still end his term lower than he started. Half? No. 25 percent I could see, even including inflation.

None of which has a jot or a tittle to do with the fact that Trump explicitly promised – back in 2024 – that a Trump administration’s policies would cut energy costs in half. Apologies and parsings aren’t answers. They are evasions. As it was during “COVID,” when unmasked people such as myself wanted to know why, if “masks worked,” it wasn’t sufficient for those who insisted they “worked” to wear them and not worry about us unmasked people, since the maskers masks protected them?

I wrote: “How about those $5k DOGE checks?”

He replied: How is that a betrayal? Do you believe you were owed that money?

Fascinating! Whether I believe I am owed the money having nothing to do with whether the money was promised – and whether the promise was not fulfilled. It is always a betrayal when a person who makes a promise reneges on it.

Like “two weeks to stop the spread.”

I wrote: “How about releasing all of the Epstein materials?”

He replied: I’ve said here before I doubt there’s anything there. If Massie or MTG knew of anything, all they had to do was give an example. Says right in the Constitution they can’t be punished for that.

As if (once again) that had anything to do with the promise that was made. One of Trump’s major talking points during the campaign was the Epstein Stuff and that, if elected, he’d release all of the information the government possessed. Once safely elected, he felt free to break that promise, too. Whether my red hat friend “doubt(s) there’s anything there” is entirely beside the point – and how could we know what’s there, since the Orange Fiend refuses to allow the release of everything the government has?

I wonder whether my friend would find a way to excuse his wife or GF if she kept fucking other guys after promising she wouldn’t. I doubt he would. But he is willing to find an excuse for Trump fucking us, over and over again.

I used to work at The Washington Times, which you may not know is owned by the Unification Church. That is to say, it is owned by the Moonies – the cult built up around the person of Reverend Sung Myung Moon, who claimed to be the second coming. He’s gone now, but the cult persists. It is very hard to get a person who has joined a cult to see that he is in a cult.

Whether it’s the Moonies, maskers or red hatters.
