The subject of civil war comes up a lot lately. How about an amicable separation instead? People do this all the time in their personal relationships. You have two people who loved one another once and maybe still do but just can’t live together any longer. At least, not without some sort of accommodation that neither can agree to.
And so the parties agree to separate.
One party does not (usually) try to force the other party to remain in the relationship and rarely tries to kill the other party when a separation is asked for. Most people understand that while it hurts to say goodbye, it’s wrong to hurt the other party for saying it.
Why can’t this work on a political level?
The answer is simple. It is why there was what was not a civil war in this country, 1861-1865. There was a successful attempt to prevent a separation. The slavery thing is a non sequitur told to young people to avoid them asking impertinent questions – such as why the “union” was inviolable (as Lincoln said it was) when that clearly conflicts with the idea of government by consent (which Lincoln had the gall to say he was defending, by forcing the states of the Southern Confederacy to submit to a government they did not consent to).
The issue that was resolved – by force – was whether states (and so the people) had the right to separate themselves politically from a “union” they no longer wished to remain within. Lincoln’s government – and armies – forced the Southern states to return to the “union” and submit to its government. This is “consent”in the manner of a woman who is unable to fight off her rapist.
The Confederacy never sought to gain political control over the states north of the Mason-Dixon line. They sought to be independent of them.
It is a lie, accordingly, that what occurred during 1861-1865 was a “civil war.”
Why is this lie told to school kids? For all the obvious reasons. The main ones being to portray the South as the bad guy and to portray the North as the good guy. This squelches questions about forcing people into a “union” they’d rather not be part of. How many people would consider getting married if it were made clear to them they could never (no matter what) leave the marriage?
Circling back to our situation.
It is similar in at least one way to the situation in this country in 1861 in that – like the Southern states – about half the people living in this “union” would like to peacefully separate from it. For reasons of irreconcilable differences, which is the generally accepted criteria for the dissolution of personal unions when they are no longer mutually agreeable. It is interesting that the criteria almost everyone accepts for the dissolution of a marital union is considered unacceptable when it comes to political unions.
Wait. That is not actually correct. What happened in 1861 – and what may happen again – is that one side of the “union” refused to allow the dissolution. How bizarre! Everyone – almost everyone – would regard it (correctly) as criminal and even psychotic to force someone to remain in a marriage they wanted out of. The reasons why are beside the point. Marriage – any such commitment – ought to be done voluntarily and for love. Using force to maintain the relationship is the antithesis of loving someone because it is the relationship of owner and slave.
But it does explain why political separation is not permissible. One side refuses to let go of their ownership claims over the other side, though this honest if evil motive is never declared.
In the context of our time, the reason why is the same as it was in that other time. One side needs the other side – in the manner of a leech that needs the warm blood of another creature to maintain its existence.
Most of you reading this are probably willing – eager – to agree that you want nothing from the Left (that is, from people who are socialists/communists) than to be free of them. More to the point, you don’t want their freedom. Or their money, either. The Left cannot survive without yours. It is like a spouse that does not work but demands you do in order to meet their needs, which always wax. A spouse who carries a .45 and makes it clear that you’d better go to work – and come home after work. And then give her a massage before bedtime.
It is really important to understand this. We do not need them – but they need us. They have to have us, just the same as the Northern states (more finely, the mercantilist interests that controlled the North and so the “union”) had to have the resources possessed by the South. Lincoln – for all his serial lying- admitted this prior to the outbreak of the war to force the South back into the “union.” He stated he would agree to any accommodation with the South regarding slavery – so long as the South continued to pay federal taxes (tariffs) and remained in the union. In other words, it was not the relationship that really mattered.
It was the relationship of owner to owned that did.
This is why those of us who wish only keep what is ours and to be left alone – are not going to be left alone by the people who believe what’s ours is theirs and who are genetically incapable (so it seems) of leaving other people alone. We are in the position of a spouse married to someone who sees us as their property and who will never let us go without a fight.
It is a depressing and daunting thing to come to terms with.
But the sooner we do, the better.

Hello Eric,
Just read this article on ZH. Hmmm… you DO know that the CW had nothing to do with slavery, and everything to do with the Bank of England/”british” and their surrogates in NYC trying for a 3rd time to turn the USA BACK into a slave colony for the perverts running England, right?
You DO know that if it wasn’t for The Tzar of Russia having his Navy patrol both the west coast and the east coast to keep the “british” from invading… again, the “british” would have invaded. And this is why the NYC banks and their “boss” the bank of england funded Trotskii and Lenin to murder the Tzar and his family.
You DO know that the entire situation was being manipulated by the NYC banks and they tried to trap Lincoln into taking loans from them, and he told them to get effed in the A hard, and started his own US currency, which is why they had him murdered, right?
You DO know that you do NOT make deals with satan, who controls nearly 53% of the population of this Country that want “socialism” and an end to The Constitution, right?
Just wondering and asking.
Hi Mike,
Yes, I am familiar with the bankster undertow – to coin a term. I do know that we (people who aren’t socialists) face an enemy that does want it. What to do about that – and how to do that – are the questions of the day.
That’s why BTC was created. You can just leave the system and it won’t matter as much where you are. If things get bad, you can physically leave the very next day with 100% of everything you own (unless you decide to keep owning government controlled assets that can be taken).
Hi Shea,
I don’t buy it. I do not believe Bitcoin is either anonymous or outside of their control – because they would never allow it.

LOL — Go ahead, leave. First, I would look at the money transfers between blue and red states. I’m not sure you have the directionality of need correct — red states are overwhelmingly receivers of federal funds, and blue states overwhelmingly donors to red state welfare. Good luck.
Hi Richard,
I can only speak for myself and others who don’t want anything from anyone else except respect for our right to be left alone, so long as we leave others alone. I am not interested in being a party to the receipt of stolen goods and do not want things stolen from me to distribute to others. It baffles me that anyone with a shred of moral sense could take issue with any of the foregoing.
The Right To Be Left Alone: That should have been included in the Bill of Rights. Instead we have the Right to Be Harassed.

100% of our serious troubles are either directly or indirectly the result of the out of control giant blob in Washington DC. The founding envisioned independent states with a very weak central authority. States generally have functioning government units which begs the question why do we need a federal government at all. The feral government causes way m ore problems than they ever solve and I really cannot come up with anything they tried to solve that didn’t get worse.
There is potential value in maybe 2% of the DC Blob and without the 98% there is a fair chance of reforming them and keeping them on task.
I do however believe that we can never get there and leaving any part of it intact and functioning would be the same as leaving some of your cancer in your body after surgery. There will be no good result.
Let the states do what they want as they are closer to the people and understand their unique problems. The one-size-fits-all approach means one size fits none.
Actually if you read your Civil War history, the South actually did do raids into the North, but it did not go very well for them.
Hi Maine Farmer,
Yes – raids – including the Gettysburg fiasco. But the South did so only to secure its independence. Not to take over the North. This is why what took place 1861-1865 was not a civil war.
The problem with the โnational divorceโ idea is that it would follow the programmed Red vs Blue that has been shoved down our throats so the choice would be right authoritarianism vs left authoritarianism neither which is acceptable. How about defanging government entirely? We donโt need either Big Daddy or Big Mommy and never did.
Problem is, RE: “We donโt need either Big Daddy or Big Mommy and never did.”
A buncha nincompoops, think otherwise.
They, ‘Like It’ they want it, and will vote even harder than you to get it.

โ while others enshrined county by county representation (like the U.S. constitution does with state by state representation) in their constitutions โ
So, your state legislature reps and senators both count by district population no longer the senators by county or parish. In my state of WA, King County has the large population including Seattle. Well, state senators by district King County dozens of districts they rule the roost. My rural conservative county has one. No longer is your state senate a โcheck and balanceโ on your state representatives. Imagine your state with 2 state senators per county, no longer would the large population centers run roughshod over the rest of the state. Here in WA the count of conservative counties far outnumber the liberals – few states would be libtard hell holes if the old system was restored.

Damn, Eric, how do you know my old lady?
We don’t need to separate but do need to identify and eliminate the cancer in our midst. The War of Northern Aggression introduced the occupants of North America to this cancer, which finally metastasized in 1913 with the direct election of senators (partially destroying the “checks and balances” concept of the USA government) as well as the formation of the federal reserve which caused this cancer to spread.
I will leave it to the gentle readers of this post to identify and ascertain the nature of the perpetrators of this cancer (which must be excised from USA society in order to assure the survival of the USA).
Good examples of this cancer existed in other parts of the world, bolshevism being but one prime example. Thankfully, bolshevism burned itself out, without totally destroying its host. being unable to maintain the status quo
Once the dollar ceases to be the worlds reserve currency, we will burn out pretty fast. That’s what happened to the USSR and their bolshevism/communism.
This is a pleasant fiction! Let’s pretend there could be an amicable separation.
A line would have to be drawn on the U.S. map and new constitutions would have to be implemented for both sides. The population would separate and go to their preferred territory to apply for membership.
In order to take residence in Libtardia, a prospective member would need to pass an oral exam including questions that pertain to rainbow flags, piercings, and the currently approved list of genders.
In the newly formed Forcibly United Territories of Authoritarian Tyranny, prospective members would need to commit to “donating” 75% of their paycheck and children to foreign wars and agree to total surveillance at all times and daily recitations of the Pledge of Police and Military Allegiance.
Sounds great! Let’s not forget that 99% of people went along with the Covid BS and condemned you for not doing so. A society of imbeciles is what we have and there’s no escape from it. All one can do is live as freely as possible where you are at, and decide what encroachments you are personally willing to take.
If those are your criteria for Libtardia, youโre going to send a fair number of people there who donโt belong there, and exclude a lot of people who do.
Try again.
Maybe focus a little less on appearance.
I’m not sending anyone anywhere.
Good question.
Especially since in most places the split is something like 60/40 vs. 40/60. Most of the more polarized areas are 70/30, which is still a pretty significant minority.
These idiots are also your friends & neighbors.
Do we create a refugee crisis and tell people to move? Do we go with some sort of weird anarchy system? (Cool idea but seems impractical, and you know someone is going to try to claim the benefits while shirking the responsibilities of all systems). Tell all the collectivists to join a commune & leave everyone else alone? Mass deportations to North Korea, no backsies or STFU? Launch people out of cannons into Canada?
I pretty much favor just trying to keep it together until the system collapses under its own weight, which will force a reckoning, and trying to keep the flame alive until then.
If you launch people out of cannons, it will kill them.
Try again.
Maybe focus a little less on violence.
Philo, baby- launching people out of cannons is a staple of circus acts. Done properly it will not kill them, any more than a catapult would. It is of course necessary to have a recovery net- I’m sure after one or 2 commies splatter in, the Canucks will quickly put up a bunch of those.
I could even see selling tickets a la Evel Knievel to the show to defray the cost of operating the cannons and catapults…
“We do not need them โ but they need us.”
Good article, Eric.
(It took Ayn Rand over 800 pages to demonstrate that fact.)
Commenters X and Flip made excellent points about the impracticality of secession based on the existing state lines.
I will add one more, clearly overlooked. Which side will inherit the gigantic US war machine, and its nuclear weapons along with it?
Look at what’s been going on between the Russian Federation and Ukraine for over 3 years. Think of Putin as Lincoln trying to keep the leaving piece under his control. Who wants this kind of bloodshed here?
The only real opportunity to separate will arise when the federal Godzilla collapses financially. There is a very slim chance that some future realistically minded POTUS will dismantle the government to the (barely) affordable pieces when such collapse takes place.
“Think of Putin as Lincoln trying to keep the leaving piece under his control.” -Hasbara AG
That’s not what’s going on. You are a propaganda tool of the dreadful oligarchs trying to spin it into “Putin trying to reconstitute the USSR.”
How do YOU know what’s going on there?
Do you have anything to go by other than the propaganda disseminated by the dreadful John Mearsheimer, or Doug McGregor, or, God help us, Scott Ritter? How do you know they are not paid actors in the service of the SVR?
Did you ever live there? Do you speak any of their languages? Do you know what is broadcast in Russia for the domestic audience vs what is on the RT for your receptive ears?
Stay in your lane. You can judge the veracity of your local news because you can see what’s going on for yourself. You may be able to judge on what’s reported about POTUS or US congress – and even there things get murky. But you cannot judge the things that you have zero first hands knowledge of, and no ability to acquire such knowledge.
Putin is a Lincolnesque figure. And he is on the way to catch up on the body count produced by that tyrant.
Habara AG:
By your nihilist measure, one must stay only in his local “lane,” where he has “first hands [sic] knowledge.” That would mean you and nearly everybody else on earth are also disqualified to opine on virtual any matter outside of about a 10 miles from their homes. You remind me of your favorite Zionist, Douglass Murray. You’ll recall he feigned shock when Dave Smith admitted he had not visited Gaza during its current ethnic cleansing by Israel, exclaiming “You’ve never been?!!!” The resemblance doesn’t surprise me though because you’re likely given the same crappy talking points.
I know a few things about Russian, Soviet and eastern European history, as well as the intel agencies-backed Maidon Revolution, which was orchestrated by Victoria “fuck the EU” Nuland. I’m also aware of the numerous times Russia was lied to about NATO encroachment and how adamant NATO had become in snuggling right up to the Russian border.
“Putin is a Lincolnesque figure.” And exactly how is that? I’ve said this many times before Hasbara AG, you are really bad at your job. You’re BS is so easy to cut through.
You cannot say anything of substance so you are just blabbering. Blah, blah, hasbara is all I hear from you.
You are just trying to pick a fight with me, for the sake of a fight. Like a mongrel. With no knowledge, no critical thinking, just mindless bullheaded aggressiveness.
Mr. Dumb-Dumb Liberty, you are embarrassing yourself.
You’re projecting against, Hasbara AG.

Irreconcilable differences … under Version 2.0 of the DC occupation government:
https://postimg.cc/bsBVFT60
Yes, the “civil war” was actually a failed secession — at no point was the CSA attempting to take over the USA. What is at least as poorly understood was that the “American Revolution” of the late 1770s was really exactly the same thing, except that it was successful. The Founders had no notion of overthrowing the British Crown. A secession is a re-drawing of the map, while a revolution (see France, Russia, etc.) is a forcible change of management.
We might wonder why the Secession of 1776 succeeded, and the Secession of 1860 failed. And we might have to scratch our heads about that for a good while, as reality is a complicated thing. As a starting point, however, consider that the British Crown in the late 1770s had European problems, French and Spanish, right next door, and formidably dangerous. The British gave us as much of their attention as they could afford, under the circumstances, but it wasn’t enough, and eventually they decided, reasonably, to cut their losses.
How could this apply to us? Imperial Washington seems, right now, to be trying to pick fights with near-peers, peers, and maybe stronger powers — we’d have to wait and see — and a situation might come up in which our neocon domestic overseers would decide to cut their losses also. Or consider an economic situation, in which alternative financial networks such as BRICS, coupled with the astronomical US debt situation, might produce a soft general collapse, a la the late Soviet Union.
The picture is grim, and any real change is going to be accompanied by assorted miseries. But let’s not despair. Nothing ever changes … until it does. And when it does, it usually changes way more suddenly than anyone expects. Eyes open, and powder dry.
Excellent analysis James,
Iโm hoping for a Soviet style collapse, probably when the rest of the world stops financing our humongous debt. Just hope Fedgov doesnโt seize everyoneโs bank accounts in a desperate attempt to stave it off.
Def wont be like the 1860s, if anything pops off it will probably be more like the balkans where enemies are everywhere and nowhere at the same time with quick strikes then disappearing thourgh peoplle’s daily routines. That is- if you live in they city, suburbs, or rural areas near a major city. People way out in rural areas should be fine
You got it. Today, unlike the 1860’s, there is no longer a concentrated majority opinion in most geographical areas, other than the big cities. People are now scattered all over. Probably more generational northerners living down south than in the entire northeast, and more Californians living in MT, UT, NV, ID etc than there are traditional residents; and those people have seriously diluted the traditional populations. Not that it matters, because both sides are authoritarian.
What ever ends up happening (if anything) I think all that we can expect is a further loss of liberty, as any new alignment will be sans the Bill Of Rights; and we have certainly witnessed that neither side gives a rat’s ass about liberty.
While I agree there will be a break down/apart/separation that will probably take place, it will not be a north/south, or any other geographical mass vs another.
The most stark difference today is urban/rural.
It’s not difficult to separate out people based on values and beliefs. What will be difficult is how to arrange the linking up of the commie cities together if they would like to form their own country.
It would be necessary to traverse the non commie lands, which will require passports, tariffs, and other restrictions, which can lead to violence, just like almost happened in the 1780s.
All the resources will be in non commie land, all the money (at first) in commie land. That is a recipe for war.
RE: “The most stark difference today is urban/rural.”
Is it, really?
There’s a big B.L.M. fandom down the road, and the neighbor up the road is all into rainbows, n-sheet.
My other neighbor is all about stopping the windmills from being erected. On the one hand, I can relate, yet on the other, …property rights be damned? Idk.
Perhaps, I’m not rural enough?
I do not think you are “Rural Enough”, Helot. More rather, your neighbours brought their Communist/Liberal BS with them when they moved to your area, and then expected everything to change for them. At the very least, these neighbours are showing their colours out right (no pun intended), so that if and when things go sideways, you will know who your enemies are.
Hmm, would they really be, ‘enemies’?
…Or, are they just useful dupes? Pawns? Simple minded, unthinking, manipulated…
Idk. They seem, ‘soft’ that’s for certain.
I imagine hard times would change their outlook quick? But, maybe I’m just a dreamer?
But yah, prolly not rural enough.
I don’t think the analogy between 1861 and today is a perfect one. Although we have “red” and “blue” states today, we do not have clearly-defined “sectionalism” as we did then. Today’s conflict is more of an urban-rural one, and, moreover, a class-based and education-based one. You have flaming left-wingers in Austin, Texas and die-hard Trumpers in Upstate New York and Orange County, CA. No matter which state you live in, if you have a graduate degree in Cultural Anthropology, you are almost certain to be a hardcore left-winger; if you operate a backhoe you are almost certainly a Trumper (even if you are in a union).
The other problem with “amicable” separation is not simply that wants money from the other (although that may be a factor) but the problem that one side tends to define itself by its supposed moral superiority vis-a-vis the other. It gives them an excuse to kill the other side and to rule over them. Certainly we saw this with slavery in the 1860s. White people who didn’t live within 200 miles of a single Negro were willing to travel a thousand miles to kill people other white people who did. Today’s leftists define themselves on cramming Drag Queens down the throats for your four-years olds, having “Pride” marches down your small-town, conservative Main Street, and forcing you into an EV. It’s for your own good, you stupid, toothless, inbred morons.
That is the bigger problem than geographic differences.
So well said X
Good points all,
Years ago Jim Rogers wrote a book called Investment Biker which detailed his round the world motorcycle trip with his then girlfriend. It was a totally fascinating read in which he described the places he went through in terms of economic and investment potential. He also predicted that inevitably at some point the U.S. would break up into regional entities…..for instance Oregon, Washington and British Columbia would be Cascadia…..nice vision but as you say, X, the divide is really between urban, now largely employed in vampire economy and rural, somewhat more productive. But the lines blur because people fleeing urban rot with “resources” are moving into rural areas and bringing, oftentimes, toxic value systems with them. That the U.S.S.A. will implode, IMO, is inevitable. What comes after is anybody’s guess.
WRT your point of “moral superiority”, it may be helpful to note that the progressive movement really amounts to a derivation of Puritan ideology…..I’ve been reading Rothbard’s The Progressive Era….it’s a slog but a different slant on progressivism.
They can’t split up without destroying both their standards of living – which is going to happen one way or another.
IMO, the CSA would have little economic clout on the world stage. Not sure a few non-union auto plants (occasionally staffed by children or illegal aliens – yeah, I’m talk to you Hyundai) and Disney tourism make for an economic powerhouse.
They’d lose out heavily on the phony growth machine that is Wall St.
Think all the citizens of the CSA will approve of no more Social Security checks?
Adios fiat US dollar.
Lots of soldier sniffers/blue flag lovers in the south. No more VA hospitals and US government pensions.
And who will buy the Lee Greenwood albums?
It all comes down to money and debt. And that’s a 3rd rail.
I don’t think a north/south divide would make sense, considering an east/west divide would be simpler. Given the fact that the feds own 50% of the property in the western US it wouldn’t take much to move the capitol to Denver or somewhere near there (given the amount of federal government already in the metro and Boulder) and make the west the primary home of the liberal big government types, leaving the east coast to the “revolutionaries.” Literally a left/right divide.
https://64.media.tumblr.com/55ee5da7578cbac24aac655adc9dd08f/tumblr_njv2de6zFp1rasnq9o1_1280.png
The culture has been swinging between the coasts for decades, so there’s even some precedent. Up until the 1970s most media tried to be “midwestern” with neutral accents, talent coming from the “big stick” radio stations in Illinois and the south, etc. That changed as the people working in the industry began to turn inward for inspiration and tried to create a more gritty “reality” instead of the grilled cheese and tomato soup of the Ozzy and Harriet days. Now every season there’d be a shift from west coast (Three’s Company, CHiPS, etc) to east coast (The Cosby Show, Cheers, Seinfeld). The rapper wars were between New York and LA singing gangs (you know, just like West Side Story but with real guns), not inner city violence.
Then it just becomes a matter of where you draw the line. Maybe Texas could go back independent, that would certainly make a much clearer break at the Mississippi River. And there’s always pretty good odds the Texans would stay with the Western Union anyway. There’s still plenty of great farmland in the mid-atlantic that’s not being used because California outproduces by such a large margin (in no small part due to their theft of water from the Colorado). Or maybe just divide the country at someplace like 100ยบ W longitude (the eastern edge of the Texas panhandle) and call it a day.
Eric, you can’t reveal the truth that Lincoln started a War to collect a tariff. If you do that then how can Trump be criticized for HIS tariff policies?
After all, one of the most viciously anti-Trump organizations is The Lincoln Project.
https://lincolnproject.us/
Oh, the irony…
Eric –as a Southerner with ancestry dating back to 1620s Virginia, I’d like to thank you for being honest about the “civil war”.
Have read multiple articles over the years regarding a new national divorce. It’d be more along the lines of urban v rural. My late father used to say “at least the yankees wore blue so we knew who to shoot”. Nowadays I guess we aim for blue hair and piercings? It’d be difficult but not impossible.
The bigger question is, unlike my Confederate ancestors, do we have the backbone today to say “we’re done” and leave? As you state, too many people buy into the myth that secession = slavery bullshit.
The Civil War, where we traded one type of tyranny for another.
The problem with secession this time will be that unlike in the 1860’s the population that desires to secede lives in close geographical contact to those that don’t.
There are a couple of salient problems with the national divorce narrative that appear to be insoluble. One is the troubling fact that, unlike the 1860s, virtually every state in the Union is filled with a fair number of libtards — especially in the South — which makes dividing the country along geographic lines nearly impossible. Secondly, “amicably” (a pipe dream, really) separating would essentially balkanize the country, which allows the communists to slice the country up into multiple administrative districts that are far easier for them to control (and which they prefer). It wouldn’t work.
Perhaps Jason, since statistically the Libtards got jabbed more might solve the problem for us normal people.
A secession today would divide into 30 or so blue city-states surrounded by freedom loving rural areas that produce all the food, energy, water.
No way the evil Deep State would allow any free people anywhere without inflicting genocide on all who stand against it.
Sadly, Jason, you are correct. In Anchorage, that city is choked full of idiot liberals. It is not called North Seattle for nothing. But in surrounding areas, they are more “hands-off-my-guns, leave-me-alone” types outside Anchorage. In Fairbanks and the borough, they have more guns per capita than elsewhere in the United States, and yet now have a borough mayor who is a leftist, but there is a mix of both libs and conservatives. You can tell who the libs are by the signs they post on their lawns and end of properties. How far Communist left they are, I do not know. I suppose if Russia come back over here, or when SHTF, we will find out very soon just how left leaning these people we walk amongst really are.
