Here’s the latest reader question, along with my reply!

Harvey asks: I’m just drove my  Jetta TDI Wagon down to Charlotte for its 200,000 mile service. The service associate remarked on what great shape it was in, and would I be interested in trading it for a “new” Jetta, Passat or Touareg TDI. Remarked that I might be interested, despite that I’ve only had to spend around $900 total on non-standard repairs since 2013 (2014 model). However, I’ve never gotten anywhere near mid-40s MPG, around 42 max hwy/38 city.

But the Touareg intrigues me.

My reply: It intrigues me, too! I was – and am – a big fan of the diesel-powered Touareg, especially the V10 version. That thing almost got air under the front wheels. But the V6 TDI is superlative, too. The torque is addictive – and the range is stupendous. It will go almost 800 miles on a full tank.

Yes, really.

That is easily three times as far as the longest-legged electric car (and the EV needs at least 30-45 minutes to recover a partial charge when its battery pack runs low).

Plus – being a diesel- the TDI Touareg ought to deliver excellent mileage (and long range) for hundreds of thousands of miles. You will never have to worry about the battery pack’s performance deteriorating . . . because it hasn’t got a battery pack.

I think you can also run these things on bio-diesel/WVO (some light mods may be needed) which means you’ll still be mobile even if there is a gas shortage.

I can’t think of a good reason not to at least consider driving one home, especially if the price is right!
