Freedom of speech — what a concept!
JENA, La. (AP) — Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil was released Friday from federal immigration detention, freed after 104 days by a judge’s ruling after becoming a symbol of Trump’s clampdown on campus protests.
The former Columbia University graduate student left a federal facility in Louisiana on Friday. He is expected to head to New York to reunite with his U.S. citizen wife and infant son, born while Khalil was detained.
“Justice prevailed, but it’s very long overdue,” he said outside the facility in a remote part of Louisiana. “This shouldn’t have taken three months.”
The Trump administration is seeking to deport Khalil over his role in pro-Palestinian protests. He was detained on March 8 at his apartment building in Manhattan.
Khalil was released after U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz said it would be “highly, highly unusual” for the government to continue detaining a legal U.S. resident who was unlikely to flee and hadn’t been accused of any violence [or any crime at all].

In the normal scheme of events, a superpower with 330 million residents would not be much concerned with a small-fry country of 9 million, just as a big dog takes no notice of a barking puppy.
Austria, for instance, has about the same population as Israel, after hundreds of thousands of Israel’s fair-weather dual citizens fled back to wherever they came from. Austria is a pleasant enough country. But it doesn’t get invited to G7 meetings, and has zero influence on US defense policy, not even being a NATO member.
Contrast little Israel, endlessly in the headlines, constantly visited by US officials, and currently pulling in US military assets — such as three (3) aircraft carrier groups — to manage the fallout from Israel’s discretionary war of aggression against Iran.
Something is terribly wrong here; terribly out of proportion. How does a little flyspeck country destabilize its entire region, while the US feigns helplessness in restraining it?
In different words, who is actually in charge here?
