Here’s today’s Cover!
It’s another Subaru Clover. Youngish woman driver – if you want to call her that. I rolled up behind a truck that had rolled up behind her and all of us conga-lined down the mountain because there was no opportunity to pass the Clover on the single lane road. Finally, the road opened up to two lanes and what did the Subaru Clover do? She stayed in the left lane, as Clovers like to do!
The weirder thing was the truck driver turned out to be a Clover, too. He’d been following the Subaru very closely – maybe one car length back from her – the whole way down the mountain; sometimes even closer than that. He seemed to be wanting to go faster than the Clover. But when he finally got the chance to pass (on the right, because the Clover would not move over) what did he do? He stayed right on the Subaru Clover’s bumper, both of them in the left lane!
And they ask me why I drink.

I think left lane hogging started due to the 55mph max speed limit in the 1970’s.
It seems brain dead driving has increased enormously in the last decade. Most new drivers are taught to be timid meat sacks. IMHO slow drivers are far more dangerous than “fast” ones. Of course no study will ever be done to prove that……
Possibly that truck driver is her husband/other wife/significant other Clover, doing escort duty, protecting her “6” from being rammed by some frustrated un-Clover driver, in a Ram.
Hi Martin,
People can fault me for many things; tailgating isn’t one of them! I never do that. I just wait for my opportunity and pass the Clover!
I think some drivers think that tailgating a left lane blocker will get them to move over. It doesn’t work because they aren’t paying attention to begin with, so they don’t notice the person on their tail,,,,,, well until they stop and get rear ended.
Just a curiosity, having seen a number of your clover videos, what is your opinion on the use of the car horn?
Hi Rich,
I only use the horn to try to avoid someone hitting me who appears about to. Otherwise, I prefer not to telegraph my intentions, so I’ve got the “drop” on the clovers!
My method as well, stay back until you see an opening coming and then blast by the Clover before he has time to react.
Agreed, horns are for when you’re about to be run into. Though it seems I have been using my horn a lot lately.
Thats a good call. When passing mentally unstable clovers you’re probably going to get flipped off at the least. I’ve found using the horn, or the lights can escalate the thing into a blood feud.
Morning, Norman!
Yup. I can handle myself but I’m not interested in getting into a stupid fight over something stupid. I do sometimes have some fun with Clovers, though. Sometimes, when I pass one (on a straight section of road) the Clover will pursue me and ride my ass. Now comes the fun – when the road curves. Clovers know how to drive fast in a straight line. Not so much in the curves. My technique is to lure them into a high speed curve by not slowing down. They follow – and fun ensues.
Years ago, I did this to a maniac in an E-Class Benz who was outraged that I passed him. He tried to follow me onto a decreasing radius off-ramp that I took at let’s just say a lot higher speed than the speed limit. He lost control of his Benz and piled it into the guardrail. I think he totaled it. I came back later to get a piece of the debris and mounted it on the wall of my garage. War Booty!
Three visits to Florida, all with amazing driving tales! Old guys in Caddies doing the ballistic merge – floor it on the on ramp and just follow the ramp trajectory all the way to the left lane without looking. Of course left lane campers, a deadly combination with younger folks in a hurry. Clover pedestrians too – group of three walking across a busy four lane arterial in the dark damn near got them.
Thought my daughter was kidding when she said most accidents include life flight as they don’t have fender benders it’s usually total destruction. Well, I came around a corner on a two lane 40 mph behind a strip mall to find destroyed cars with an engine / trans 10 feet from one of the cars. I could hear a helo was inbound.
Last time I was in Virginia (May) I saw a VDOT sign that said “Left Lane is for Passing Only.” Was kind of surprised they put that up but was happy to see it.
Also is it true that it is no longer a criminal offense to do 10 mph over the limit in VA?
A Two Leaf Clover, eh? You ought to drive I-95 in South Carolina. You’ll get a year’s worth of Clover video in one day, I gare-on-tee it. It’s nothing but dawdling New Yawkers and Floridiots.
