‘The bill failed in a vote of 211-213, with nine representatives not voting. Just three Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the bill: Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY), Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA), and Don Bacon (NE). One Democrat, Henry Cuellar (TX), voted against the legislation.
‘Before the Venezuela bill, another War Powers Resolution aimed at stopping President Trump’s bombing campaign against alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific Ocean also failed in a vote of 210-216, with two Republicans (Massie and Bacon) voting in favor and two Democrats (Ceullar and Vicente Gonzalez (TX) voting against.’

This week we learned that the unemployment rate rose to 4.6%, a four-year high. The Sahm rule, developed by Federal Reserve economist Claudia Sahm, says that when the three-month average of the unemployment rate rises by 0.50% from its 12-month low, a recession has started.
Currently, the three-month average is up 0.43% from its 12-month low. (I had to interpolate the October rate as 4.5%, halfway between September and November, since the October report was skipped during the shutdown.)
When the next jobs report is released on January 9, if the unemployment rate remains at 4.6% or higher, the Sahm rule will trigger: recession dead ahead (or more likely, already underway).
Full disclosure, the Sahm rule hit its threshold of 0.50% for three months in a row during July-Sep 2024, but then fell back without a recession occurring, as far as we know. That was a rare miss. But now the wolf’s at the door again, and this time he means business!
Needless to say, this spells D-O-O-M for the auto industry. 🙂
Just got through another fun filled trip to the grocery store. Someone from the Trump Administration really needs to walk through one someday. A freaking 10 oz bag of Hershey Kisses (which I was going to use to make some Xmas cookies) is $7.49! These people are out of their minds. I have no idea how most people are doing it.

I may do a video survey of my local grocery store. It’s alarming. A bar of chocolate – now paper thin, by the way – costs $5. I am glad I no longer buy chocolate. Ground beef (not Downer Cow) is now $8 pound. A ribeye used to cost that much. A pint of non-bovine-growth-hormone half and half? $4. A pack of butter? $6. Two people eatig at Chipotle? $40.
I have no idea how most people are doing it, either.
