Another Thing About EVs . . .

The thing about EVs is the people and entities pushing them never seem to tell the people they’re pushing EVs on the truth about EVs.

The whole truth, that is.

For example, that they’re not going to save money by purchasing an EV – because the EV costs more to buy than a non-EV and doesn’t cost appreciably less to “fuel” due to the rising cost of electricity. Especially “fast” charge electricity, which costs much more than the seemingly “free” electricity available at home (which only seems “free” because you don’t have to pay for it immediately).

Here’s another partial-truth they haven’t told people: It’s important to not fully charge an EV regularly if you want to get the maximum life out of its battery pack. The dictum is “EV batteries should be kept at 30-80 percent charge to extend battery life.” It is very important to extend battery life, because the life of the EV depends on the battery due to the cost of replacing the battery if its “health” (i.e., its ability to accept and hold a charge) deteriorates.

Now,  consider: The typical $40,000-$50,000 EV touts a maximum, fully charged range of 250 or so miles. Eighty percent fully charged would leave you with a range of about 200 miles. Thirty percent would leave you with just 75 miles – assuming it actually goes that far. Remember that EVs are not like vehicles with engines in that the distance they can travel on a charge is often wildly dependent on how cold (or hot) it is outside and whether you use the AC  or heater and other electrically powered accessories – which all draw electricity from the battery. (In a car with an engine, heat is basically free in that it does not cost range to turn it on because the heat is provided by the warmth of the running engine.)

You also may not be able to charge – if the “fast” charger you planned on using turns out to be offline. If you let the battery run down to “fumes” – so to speak – you risk the EV bricking and then it’s time to call a flatbed, because it’s not possible to walk down the road to get a can of volts. So unless you’re absolutely sure you’ll be able to make it to wherever you’re planning to charge – and sure that the power will be on – it’s a good idea to leave enough charge in reserve to be able to make it to an alternative place to charge. Or back home, at least – where you’ll at least be able to take a nap or do something else while you wait the several hours’ minimum it takes to recover any meaningful charge at home.

That’s italicized to bring up another thing they don’t tell you about EVs. You can’t “fast” charge one at home – because residential homes do not have the high voltage DC current needed to do that. The best you can do is what they call Level II charging, which means plugging into a 240V electric dryer-type outlet. This takes 6-8 hours to fully recharge an EV. Oh, they also don’t tell you that you’ll probably also have to get an electrician to come out and wire up the circuit and the outlet and he may have to upgrade your entire electrical panel in addition to that. If it’s  necessary to do the latter, it is likely to cost you at least $1,000 and probably more.

Wonder why they don’t tell people about that.

Back to the “health” thing – and the need to keep the battery partially charged to maintain it. The EV owner is presented with a paradoxical situation. To use the vehicle, he must be able to drive it. But in order to be able to drive it as far as its manufacturer claims it can be driven, it must be fully charged and if he does that, he puts the “health”of the battery at risk.  Put another way, in order for him to get the maximum life out of his device, he must avoid using it to the fullest extent of the capabilities its manufacturer advertises.

Imagine buying a 4WD truck and discovering that if you use the 4WD more than a little bit, you’ll be risking the “health” of the 4WD. How about  warm coat you could only use 30-80 percent of the time in winter?

It’s fair – because it’s true – to say that everything they told us about EVs is a lie. The cost to buy one hasn’t gone down. The cost to charge one has gone up. They tell us about new-design, high-capacity batteries that can be recharged in ten minutes or even less. They do not tell us that this is only possible with extremely high voltage charging systems that effectively do not exist outside of labs. They never told people the driving range of their EV might plummet in cold weather or that they must have a single family home/garage in order to able to charge at home because the charge cord is only about 12 feet long. They never told people about the inherent risk of spontaneous combustion – or the increased cost of insurance arising from that.

EVs are the “pandemic” of transportation. Everything we were told about both was either a lie or an omission and the EV push itself is based on a lie about a “climate change” that’s just as bogus as what people were told about “stopping the spread.”

Lesson: You can count on everything you’re told about anything by the government being the farthest thing from the truth.

    There is also little to no standardization in the EV sphere:

    -There are no standardized battery designs.
    -There are no standardized charging cables.
    -There are no standardized charging stations.

    Imagine if you could only fill up your Dodge, Chrysler, or Jeep at a Mopar gas station. Imagine if you could only put air in the tires of your Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, or GMC truck using an AC-Delco air hose.

    That’s the way it works with EVs.

    And I suspect two reasons for this:

    One: Standardization is either technologically impossible or impractical.
    Two: TPTB want to make EVs such a hassle that people decide to take the bus.

    • The charging design is the way it is because of greed on the part of those who want to sell them. Nothing more to it than this. Tesla wants their chargers unique so they can use it to sell their cars or license it to others, thus skimming a bit of their competitor’s profit.

      Actually, though, the whole reason we got gas in the first place was similar to this, Rockerfeller wanting a to corner an advantage over alternatives like hemp fuel, steam and electric at the time. In the end robber barons gonna robber baron.

Even if someone ever invents a magical battery (super capacitor perhaps?) that can be fully charged in 5-10 minutes there is no way the electric grid could ever handle that amount of intermittent load. Especially now with the Big Brother data spy centers being built everywhere. With the average vehicle (EV’s included) costing north of $50k Govco is well on its way to their true goal of eliminating private car ownership for the majority of Amerikans.

    • There’s a company selling an induction cooktop that includes an integrated battery. The purpose is to boost the output as much as 10Kw peak so that you can (for example) boil water in 40 seconds.

      My guess is the only feasible way to roll out fast charging at scale would be to have battery plants at the charge point. Of course they’d have to be trickle charged off the grid before ready for another go, so if people continue to follow generalized schedules they will always be depleted when the majority of people want to use them.

  4. Kudos for a great post, you have managed to distill the major technical objections to the EV-Push in one easy to digest article. That being said, it is not relevant. The push for the EV has nothing to do with the environment or the economy or energy management . It is all about control.

    I have been driving for well over a half century, I got my first drivers license in 1968 I took my test in a new 1968 VW Microbus, a simple, economical, easy maintenance, rugged and near bulletproof vehicle.

    I have been driving for a long time, have had many cars and seen much and have literally driven across entire continents. Having a vehicle has always been important to me, mobility is freedom.

    Somewhere in the mid-70’s at the time the government first started getting involved deeply into the auto business the excuse was of course saaaafety. The chattering classes would often opine that somehow we “need to end America’s love affair with the automobile” for their own good of course.

    The initial idea was to try to regulate the private automobile out of existence with onerous safety and environmental regulations. The idea was to make automobiles more expensive and less convenient to most people. The engineering profession surprised everybody rose to the task and were able to build good decent cars at affordable process despite mountains of bureaucratic nonsense. (An aside to this, when these regulations started going heavy, the Japanese makers hired more engineers, the American manufacturers hired more lawyers). The side effect was that cars got better, more powerful and more reliable. In the old days putting 100k on your car was something to brag about. Today it is just another oil change interval.

    Government fought back by adding more layers of nonsense, which the engineers easily managed but the cost was now getting very high. The point of diminishing marginal returns passed long ago. CAFE regulations cost dollars to save cents. Still people want their cars, now what?

    Enter the magical EV, yes, no emissions even when you charge it with a diesel generator, but that is not the real goal.
    The powers that be have finally gotten to the point where they were able to achieve their objective, between ridiculous levels of over engineering driving costs into orbit (un-repairable aluminum body panels, 8 speed automatic transmissions, direct injection, automatic start-stop systems now required “driver assistance” along with the insurance Mafia), and cars are no longer a symbol of mobility and freedom but just another chain around your neck.

    Enter the EV at this point to act as the final coup-de-grace.
    All the negative points against the EV cited above are exactly the point! They are as the old saying goes, features not bugs.

    The EV is basically a net-connected iPad on wheels. Your EV monitors and reports your every movement. The ability to drive or to charge your ride is under compete control by someone else. You think you own it, think again. Just like the “optional” heated seats and other features like better audio, all of it can be enabled or disabled with a checkbox on a computer screen somewhere.

    Remember when the Russians finally had enough of the West’s bullshit and decided to finally step into Ukraine? There were calls for Elon The Great to disable all the Tesla cars in Russia? Elon said he wouldn’t do it. Note: he did NOT say he couldn’t do it, because he certainly could do it.

    Same in Australia, there were calls during the scamdemic to program the EV’s remotely to prevent anyone from driving more them 5 KM from home, again they didn’t do it and I think they didn’t do it because it was too early to tip their hand.

    The entire EV push has one purpose and one purpose only – to limit our mobility and control where we can and cannot go, coupled with pricing most people out of the car marker BINGO we have the controllers wet dream finally, ending America’s (the worlds) love affair with the automobile.

    Today your EV, and not just the Tesla’s, all have OTA updates, Over The Air. You cannot turn it off. If you try your car will not function. These updates can do anything from simple reporting on your driving habits to actually not allowing the car to go someplace. Have a lockdown? No problem, your car won’t go anywhere but where you are “authorized” . Where is that? Well that is anywhere some petty little shit drunk on power decides you cannot go. How about “Speed Limit Assistance”, try to exceed the posted limit, your car will just not do it. Change lanes without signaling? Uh oh, baaaad. Authorities notified, license number time stamp, GPS coordinates, and your ticket is in the mail, maybe your CBDC account already debited. Cornering to fast? We let your insurance company know about that, for your own good of course.

    Even charging can be controlled and limited. I have read that the new Level 2 chargers are two-way, that is you can charge or the charger can take power OUT of your batteries. Been a bad boy, misgender some purple-hair on Fecesbook? You can imagine the rest. Want to go to a protest? Good luck, try your bicycle (me, I will drive my ’72 Beetle).

    The real goal is to keep you from even having a car, a little too much freedom, can’t have that!

    Oh by the way, all these OTA updates are available today. And this is not just limited to EV”s now, it will be on all new cars and already is on most of them.

    So they achieve a dual goal, make autos too expensive for most people and then control the ones that can afford them.

    We all know that there is nowhere near enough power generation and transmission/distribution to supply even a tiny fraction of the cars now on the road if converted to EV’s. Again that is a feature NOT a bug.

    I hear Teslatards all time address these batter issues with the claim that the magic-battery is just around the corner, charge in 5 minutes, no auto-immolation feature. But the math doesn’t work. It doesn’t matter how great your battery is, it STILL needs to be charge and that requires electrical energy to be transferred to the car. To charge the battery required AMPS,. You will not be able to charge a 45-99 KWh battery in 5 minutes because no conductor that can handle that amperage is small enough to fit into a hand-held plug-in connector assuming you can even put that much power through your substation transformer and breakers.

    There will NEVER be 250 million EV’s on the road and that is exactly the point.
    Europe is ahead here and proposing laws that will outlaw anyone from performing auto repairs on an ICE car over 15 years old, this will be coupled with a prohibition of making or selling replacement parts. Later they will rules requiring the destruction of these vehicles. This is a test. If implemented, the US is next.

    So all the technical arguments, the environmental arguments are moot when you consider the REAL goal of the EV push. The “elites” will have their armored Suburbans, Range Rovers and G-Wagens. We will be taking the electric bus, but not in the winter, and not too often and not too far and only to where we are authorized to go.

    • One underlying concern is that it’s not just EVs that are being built for control. There may be some advantages to the devices being battery powered but I think the EV part is just a red herring to get greenies on board who might just have otherwise just held on to their Subarus. Maybe they figured EV would tax the grid that they’re ripping up to the point of stress but their war on coal, gas and oil is just as effective at pushing up the price of energy. Their ‘Oh shit’ moment was when they realized THEY need the power, too. So the directive to soften on nuclear. Otherwise all the surveillance and control is present in all modern cars regardless of energy source.

    • Thanks for the info, Alex, and yes, I read your entire reply thread. Even if by some miracle the grid could handle 300 million EV’s, much like the cure for cancer or paralysis, it has already been found 50-100 years ago: The elites enjoy such technology, but the rest of us do not even realize it is even in existence, let alone being used by those deemed more “worthy” of life and freedom, and the ability to also enjoy that tech. Have they found a way to support all those EV’s? Who knows? But, I think you are correct, in that it is all about power and control over us-the masses. And nothing less than ultimate, total annihilation will make them happy. If one could see into the future, it would be almost hilarious to watch which “Top Dogs” fight to be king of the hill. Right now, they are working together to get rid of us 99%. But in the end, there can only be one.

        Your summary sums up my view as well. My main reason for coming to the same conclusion being they cannot possibly be so serially and consistently stupid. It’s obvious EVs cannot “work” – as mass market replacements for vehicles with engines. Yet they continue to push EVs – as well as the ideology of EVs (i.e., “climate change”). This tells me the thing is being done for ideological rather than practical reasons.

  5. The rich liberal deluded California types will continue to purchase EV’s but they have a dilemma with Tesla and Elon…they hate him. All they have to do is get Katie Porter elected then they can outlaw the internal combustion engine once and for all. All that rests between their Marxists dreams is a fat, bitchy, ugly, someone else’s ex-wife, suddenly becoming popular and winning the vote of 60% CA liberals and 100% Transgenders (conservatives stay home…not needed).

    Brilliant! *cough, cough* Too bad we can’t just munch some horse paste and make them go away. 🙁

    Obviously, if Big Gov wanted ‘truth in range,’ it would mandate a published range based on 80% battery charge. This would be a real-life, conservative figure, to compensate for: (a) not charging to 100% for ‘health’; (b) not running the battery down to 0%; and (c) leaving some contingency for extra loads such as heating, air conditioning, and even driving uphill to a higher altitude.

    By the way, what ever happened to the dire ‘razor blade throat’ variant which the Lügenpresse warned us about? Haven’t seen anyone collapsing to the floor at the supermarket, clutching at their neck and shrieking in pain. But danger lurks everywhere!

Despite the truth about EVs becoming more obvious, what are the odds that states (particularly states with DEMOCRAT governors) pushing “No new gas vehicle sales by 203X” will double down on the EV push in a similar way to states that have blatantly decided to spite Trump and RFK Jr by doubling down on “Safe and Effective COVID jabs!” via their own “Vaccine recommendations”?

  8. Hmm, I had not thought of “new” (not-so-new) EV’s in that light, Horst, in them-really-being used vehicles, with the constant re-charging on the lot before being sold. That brought a question to mind, and Eric this is one for you: How many EV’s that you have test drove and reviewed over the years have either been delivered to you on a flat bed, or been near “empty” (aka, little battery power)? Necessitating your having to recharge them before you can even get around to driving them to review? At least if I have to rent a gas powered vehicle, the gas tank is full, and I can return it full with a simple, couple minute fill-up at the gas station. I do not see where EV’s offer anything worth the hassle, let alone the price, of owning one, especially when it is dark and cold for 9 months out of the year. I would still like to get from “Point A” to “Point B” without freezing to death.

      When they drop off EVs for me, they are always left with a partial charge because they driver has to drive from the last place he charged the thing to my place and by the time het gets here, the charge is depleted by 20-30 percent. As an example, the Ioniq 5 I reviewed a week ago has a max range of about 245 miles; it was left here with about 200.

      This generally means I can drive the thing once before I have to plug it in (at home) for a day before I can drive it again. I could go to “fast” charger, but I am uninterested in wasting the time or the money, so I just drive my truck or some other vehicle in between charges at home!

      PS: The gas vehicles are always left full because there’s a gas station just 5 miles down the road from me.

  9. All that extra effort for what amounts to a second vehicle. Because you’re not just buying a car, you’re buying a “system.”

    ICE vehicles force you to buy into a system too. But that system is largely independent of any other system. Sure, the gas pumps use a nominal amount of electricity to deliver product from the merchant to the tank, but if the gas station owner is concerned about an outage it can be easily backed up with a small (for commercial use) generator. And of course the petrol-fuel system depends on the various electronic banking networks, but even that comes with a backup of paying cash, or even a cheque in a pinch. And it has been developed over 100+ years, plenty of time to wring out the bugs and optimize for efficiency.

    The various electrical charging systems simply don’t have this flexibility. And the various charging “networks” being built don’t have backup systems either. No backup generator because it would have to be scaled up so large as to never make sense to deploy. No backup payment options because that would cut into margins -and they’re designed to not have humans in the loop.

    One would think that new, cutting edge equipment might somehow avoid problems or better anticipate them, having the reference of the petrol-fuel system available, but the people building it don’t have the masses of people and their learned lessons over the decades to refer back to, they just make assumptions. Now I’m sure they’re very smart and doing the best they can, but it is simply impossible for a small group to anticipate all the use cases and potential setbacks once the network is set loose on the public. And unlike the petrol-fuel delivery system, which is largely decentralized and has a lot of redundancy inherent in the system, the electric charging networks are completely vertically integrated and all pulling from the same monopoly grid. An outage for one is an outage for all. Most designer types don’t see organically redundant systems as desirable because they are inherently inefficient, and most people funding these startups are hoping for a winner takes all monopoly, or at least a regional monopoly like the cable company.

  10. I’ll add one more thing. The EV doesn’t just sit at the dealer’s lot. It gets discharged over time, which means the dealer must charge it from time to time. So even a “new” EV is effectively a used car.

    It’s quite simple, if people actually knew the cost/ benefit ratio regarding EVs they would never buy one. A sizable percentage of those who buy one suddenly discover the meaning behind the phrase “Buy the dream; own the nightmare”, funny but true.

    Even if solid state batteries become commercially viable and their dedicated chargers become commonplace; there’s not enough power to charge more than a couple percent of the cars on the road and with AI data centers being pushed not even that much.

  12. Eric, you just highlight even more reasons to NOT own an EV ever! What good does this expensive, brick-on-wheels going to do anyone up here at -40 below? Not a damned thing except look pretty in the driveway. But I suppose one can virtue signal about owning one while not being able to drive it without freezing to death everywhere you go. If it does not strand you somewhere first in the middle of nowhere. Also, though, I sure as hell would not want to put that thing in a garage anywhere, lest it burn the garage and the rest of the house down along with it.

      If someone really wants an EV; the first step would have to be building a concrete block garage with a concrete roof and fire resistant doors detached from their home. The EV will still catch fire but hopefully your house won’t burn down.

  13. Far too many people can’t conceive the depths of depravity emanating from GovCo. This is due to the fact that only ~5% of the population is socio/psychopathic. It’s that ~5% that rises to the top in any large organization, especially one that has unchallengeable violence in its toolbox.

    It’s also these people that embrace the “noble lie” from Plato to Leo Strauss, father of the Neo-Cons. Dishonesty as a foundational philosophy is what drives our GovCo dominated society.
