Here’s the latest reader question, along with my reply!

TwoBears asks: Can the 2019 CrossTrek manual transmission be flat towed behind an RV?

My reply: I think so.

Provided it’s in neutral, which will permit all four wheels to freewheel. It’s a manual, so no worry about damaging the transmission.

However, don’t take my word for it. Take Subaru’s. Ask the dealer. Check your owner’s manual. Be sure. There might be a good reason to not flat-tow the thing and if there is – and you do – then you’ll void your warranty coverage, among other things.

The dealer should be able to answer this question with legal certainty.

  1. Just a comment on the manual transmission: some manual transmissions/transfer cases only distribute oil when driven by the engine, not the wheels while in neutral. I recall this being the case on some older Jeeps. May not be the case for yours – as Eric says, check the manual.
