More than 100 years ago, the world went to war over a squabble in the Balkans and the assassination of a Balkan politico – the Archduke Franz Ferdinand – in Serbia. What followed was both ridiculous and tragic – and it looks like it may happen again.
This time, over a ridiculous little comedian who plays the role of “president” of Ukraine, a piece of the old Soviet Union that is being used as a front for a proxy war on Russia, which has so far shown almost unbelievable restraint in the face of provocations so obnoxious only an American jingo could fail to see it. Of course, Americans are lectured endlessly about “Putin’s aggression” – nevermind the aggression of America in backing the loathsome little comedian with weapons and support. And nevermind that the whole dirty business was precipitated by obnoxious reneging on promises made to the Russians that Ukraine would not become a member of NATO, something the Russians understandably consider to be unacceptable for exactly the same reason Americans would consider it unacceptable if Mexico or Canada became a Warsaw Pact member. One does not need to be a genius to comprehend this. Just not a blinkered, flag-humping jingoist.
The Russians have put up with a lot. More than we would have put up with. It seems clear that Putin does not want to go to war with NATO, which would mean going to war with the United States. On the contrary, it seems very clear there are people occupying positions of authority in the United States – such as the loathsome Lindsey Graham, senator from Boeing – who want very much to goad the Russians into a war with NATO and so with the United States. If this happens – and at this point, it seems more likely than ever that it will happen, unless these maniacs are somehow dealt with – it will be even more ridiculous and far more tragic than the world going to war over the assassination of Franz Fucking Ferdinand. The latter was at least the heir to throne of Austria-Hungary – whereas the “president” of Ukraine is a third-rate comedian who played the president of Ukraine (literally) before he became “president” – which happened after he played the piano with his penis on TeeVee.
Chew on that. The third world war – perhaps – incited by this horrible nonentity and his backers, who back him because they, in turn, were bought and paid for to do exactly that.
It is nothing less than astounding that – as of this writing – Keeeeeeeeeevv (as we’re superciliously expected to enunciate the name of the capital city of Ukraine) has not been flattened if not turned to glass in the wake of the mass drone attack the other day deep inside Russian territory that destroyed a number of Russia’s long-range strategic bombers, their counterparts of our B-52s.
Chew on that. Try to not be a flag-humping jingo, if you are one (turn off that horrible jingo jerk-off Lee Greenwood song Trump loves to play) and imagine the Russians egging on the Cubans to launch a mass drone attack on American strategic assets such as B-52 bombers. Imagine even one of ours got bombed to smithereens on our soil by a Cuban drone probably supplied by the Russians and almost certainly guided to its target with the help of the Russians.
Of course, the Russians would never do that as they are not insane. More finely, that country is not under the control of lunatics, as here – all of whom, to a man, are old men with no skin in the game who believe they will be just fine, even if the Russians are goaded beyond what they can suffer and respond.
When they do, it will be something a sane mind has difficulty imagining. More finely, a sane mind has difficulty understanding why anyone not out of their mind would risk it, over Wlodomyr Fucking Zelensky and that Balkan country which isn’t worth (to quote Bismarck) the bones of a single healthy Pomeranian grenadier.

I read in one of the comments a reference to “the senator from Boeing”. The phrase was applied to Scoop Jackson, senator from Washington and early neoconservative hero. Tis a long, sordid tale but though the neoconservative influence in the U.S. has waxed and waned over the years it has always been opposed to peaceful interaction with Russia and supported of the worst excesses of the Zionist movement. FWIW, Trump’s support of the kind of anti free thought laws that already exist in some European countries and the UK prove that he has no respect whatsoever for basic human rights to liberty and free speech/thought. If we make it through this insane phase, I hope to buy you folks a drink for surviving the most insane period in American history.
One other aside…..I see a common attitude that conflates the concepts of country and government. I look around at people who as Eric points out, cannot afford a small bag of groceries and I know that the majority of people do not support these foreign interventions. Then I see “leaders” like Macron (France), Merz (Germany) and Starmer (UK for now) and I know these asshats do not care about what the citizens of their countries think….same for Trudeau in Canada. He ought to have destroyed the Ukrainian regime of “president” Zelensky and dictated reasonable terms, such as Ukraine treaty-binding itself to never joining NATO and and the ethnic Russian areas ceded to Russia in exchange for the cessation of hostilities. Then there would be peace.

That said. I’m not happy with the direction Trump has been going lately. When he threw Zelickhead out of the White House & cut off the money spigot I was quite hopeful that he could make some headway towards extricating ourselves from yet another quagmire. Instead, we get this crap. I don’t know if he’s gone senile, if he believes the lies that people are whispering in his ears and/or lacks alternative perspectives on the situation, or if he’s acting like a pussy and caving in yet again (he is way more of a moderate than he’s usually given credit for).
He’s the sort of person who (I think) sincerely believes what he’s saying, in the moment that he says it…but lacks the memory/consistency/follow-through/principles to stick to anything for more than about 5 seconds. Sure, sounds like a great idea, let’s do that. Vain salesman that he is, he’s susceptible to flattery and a really good pitch — a weakness that is all too easily exploited — and DC is full of slick suave resourceful self-starting selfish rapacious striving enterprising ambitious snakes with ulterior motives.

However, I often question Eric’s assessment and judgement of conflicts outside of the US. Without knowing the local history, culture, mentality there develops a bias based on feelings, partial or false information, and sounds in the echo chamber of other commenters – here and elsewhere.
Zelensky is indeed a loathsome character. However, Zelensky is not the people of Ukraine. Ukraine is a complex society of which you know nothing. Zelensky is a criminal who is acting now against the interests of the Ukrainians, and the fact that he father is Jewish has nothing to do with what he is doing now. He is doubling down to avoid any agreement with Russia to end the war as it means his prosecution and possible gallows.
Russia is not the innocent party here. For those who continue to waive the promise made to previous russian president by a US Secretary of State 30 years ago about not expanding NATO eastward – it was negotiation tactic to make the Soviet occupational forces leave Eastern Europe without bloodshed. It should also be reminded to everybody that the russian government back then signed the so-called Budapest memorandum whereby it promised to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

I don’t think I wrote or even implied anything about Zelensky’s being Jewish. Why bring that into the discussion? As far as the rest. Is there a time limit on official promises made by one state to another? The promise made to Russia by the United States was that Ukraine would not ever become a NATO member state, something intolerable to the Russians for understandable and legitimate reasons. And then there is the mucking around with internal Ukrainian politics by NGOs – which are of course exactly the opposite of that. We are told that we must support “democracy” in Ukraine – yet Zelensky is a “president” in the same way Idi Amin was one.
It does pay to know the facts.

As far as the rest – think about this from the libertarian perspective, or even how the criminal law justifies deadly force.
