Reader Question: Legacy vs. WRX?

Here’s the latest reader question, along with my reply:

Mitch asks: Have you ever done a report on the Subaru Legacy? I recently read your viewpoint on the Subaru WRX, which you obviously view positively. The Legacy doesn’t have the sporty aspect of the WRX, no manual transmission, and I’m not sure about the engine. I assume it wouldn’t be good on back roads like the WRX. It is a few thousand less expensive than the WRX in general and is a good looking car, seems similar in size to the WRX. I’m just wondering if you have an opinion on the Legacy. It seems that base models are rare as they are for the WRX.

My reply: Yes, I have reviewed the  Legacy – but not recently. Here’s a link to a review I wrote of the 2020 model, which is very similar to the current/2025 model. Subaru plans to discontinue the Legacy after the current model year, so you may be able to get a “clearance” deal on remaining inventory.

As you already know, the Legacy is a very different kind of car than the WRX. The latter is a high-performance car with a very firm riding suspension. The former is tuned to be soft and luxurious. Both are fine cars but also very different cars. If you like a luxury-feeling car rather than an aggressive-feeling one, you will like the Legacy. But if you like a driver’s car, the WRX is the one for you!

  1. Or, you could have the best of both worlds as I did with my 2005 Legacy GT with a manual. WRX engine and drivetrain in a roomier package. Suspension was a little softer but not a ton. So you’d have to find a used one but I had about 200k miles on mine (175k on the original clutch!) and I know it’s still running strong.
