Curiously – perhaps not – the war has resumed but only two parties appear involved, Iran and the United States. Israel is quiet, which is curious since the war began because Israel started it (Trump has publicly acknowledged this). Now it appears the war does not involve Israel at all.

The truth, of course, is that this war between Iran and the United States is an example of let’s you and him fight – on behalf of Israel. To serve the interests of Israel is perhaps a more accurate way to put it. Does anyone ask why we are at war with Iran? This far-away country that didn’t attack us before we (along with Israel) attacked it? What’s that all about? America – more finely, Americans (as opposed to the interests that control America) – derive no benefit from being at war with Iran. But Israel does. It serves Israel’s interests to hammer the Iranians. Well, why is America hammering Iran for the sake of Israel? We are not supposed to ask such questions. It is “anti-Semitic” to ask such questions.

Israel is quiet all of a sudden because Americans had been getting loud – about this strange and evil business of our country going to war on behalf of Israel. About Trump acting as if he were the president of Israel – an office he seems to aspire to – rather than the president of the United States. About paying $4 or more for gas because of Israel. Until about two weeks ago – just before Trump surrendered to the Iranians via the Memorandum of Agreement – public sentiment toward Israel and its culpability for starting this war and goading Trump into involving us in it had been souring like cottage cheese left in the sun too long. Something had to be done. The Israelis (and their agents in this country) are not stupid people.
A redirection was required. The war – now back on – is no longer a three-way war. It is – so it can be presented – a two-way war. As if it had always been a war between two parties. People forget because the interests want them to forget.
What happened was a pretend cessation of hostilities based on a pretended acceptance of Iran’s terms of surrender, most particularly the understanding that Iran is now the master of the Strait of Hormuz. It is right there in the Memorandum of Surrender Trump pretended to agree to without agreeing to it. He pretended to the American people that he had not agreed to it while pretending to the Iranians that he had. The American people were led to believe the Strait would be re-opened to all traffic, at the behest of the Orange MacArthur. The Iranians were led to believe the Orange MacArthur had agreed to their terms, so when those terms were violated, the Iranians did what you’d expect and responded with force. This became the excuse Trump needed to restart the war and – so he hoped – rouse the belligerence of the American volk in support of the war, which has been reframed as a war between Iran and the United States and – look! – the Iranians started it.
No doubt “Bibi” is getting a good laugh out of this.
But who will get the last laugh? Has anything changed, beyond the perception that this is a war between Iran and the United States? Put another way, does the United States – that is, Trump – think he can win the war that he’s lost so far? How, exactly? More bombing runs? It hasn’t much fazed the Iranians so far. Why would it faze them now? An estimated 10 million of them poured into the streets a few days ago to express their respect for the ayatollah murdered by Trump. It does not matter whether you respect the ayatollah. What matters is that 10 million Iranians do. Trump seems not to grasps this – and neither does “Bibi.”
There is also a time element at work – and time is running short. Trump doesn’t have a couple of months to bomb the Iranians back to the “peace” table. The word is the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is close to empty and if it’s not refilled soon, it is not unlikely that gas will soon cost a lot more than $4 per gallon, if gas is available at all. Trump could use domestic supply to provide for America’s needs but then the shock absorber for the rest of the world would be gone and then the impact of the war (and the closing of the Strait, again) will be felt worldwide, in the manner of a 1929-style crash. Or worse.
All for the sake of the contumacious little country that has gone silent, for the moment.

Israel is “quiet” because, while the world is enthralled with the US and Iran beating the crap out of each other, they are busy attacking the West Bank and Southern Syria with their rabid army of “settlers”. It;s the magician’s most effective tactic – misdirection.
It served greater Israel’s interests to start the war. The US/Israel didn’t get regime change in Iran though. That was the goal. Iran surprised the USA with its capabilities. The Iranians have been so successful they are putting the Carter Doctrine and US petro-dollar in jeopardy. This would be a massive strategic loss. So it isn’t about Israel anymore. This would be the biggest strategic loss since Vietnam. Americans have never understood Vietnam either. Western empires have kept China contained and subdued using Island chain defense theory and Mackinder Heartland theory strategies going back centuries. If you study the history of the region and China’s century of humiliation everything becomes pretty clear. Plus just look at a map. China and the region started pushing out from this after WW2 with the Western empires exhausted. Malaysia and Indonesia broke out. The US had to fight a war in Korea to maintain its Northern Asia continental foothold in which to threaten and influence China from. Which is why China made sure North Korea didn’t lose. That is their buffer. France lost Vietnam and the US came in to shore up the Southern continental Asia foothold from which to project power and influence into China from. That is what the US fought so hard for. These are the games of empire. The US lost. It was a massive strategic loss . Nixon went to China after for that reason. To manage and influence China’s rise in a more peaceful collaborative way. Hoping to integrate China more into Western economic practices but keep China weak militarily. Keep Russia and China apart so they don’t organize outside of Western institutions. It didn’t work out in the long run. When China modernized it’s military and started building it out Obama began the pivot to Asia. China was ordered to break off all ties with Russia after they annexed Crimea. China refused. The West tried to pull out of China and crash the Chinese economy but Xi put strict capital controls in place in 2015 and stopped it. Then US strengthening Taiwan, biowarfare?, renewed US military activity in the Phillipines, militarizing Japan again, doing everything we can to break up BRICS (organizing outside Western institutions). That is about the only front the US is winning on. Pulling Brazil and India out of BRICs may be a death blow to BRICS. They really failed at keeping China and Russia apart. This is also a major problem and why they can’t afford to let go of Ukraine either. They pushed to hard there also and now can’t afford to let go. They were supposed to kick Russia out of Sevastopol not give them all of Crimea and the Azov coast. If the war ends today it is a huge strategic win for Russia. That is why the war can’t end. Western coverage and analysis of that war is terrible. It is all propaganda. The US PR firm Edleman writes the narratives (along with Zelensky’s speeches) and the media companies are paid to repeat then and spread all the nonsense out. When Russia crossed the border in 2022 February they sent a force to threaten Kiev to freeze troops there to defend it and force negotiations and at the same time sent the serious force to take Mariupol. This is where the real fighting and action was. Russia won the Azov coast securing Crimea. The US/NATO planned the Summer 2023 offensive to break the “landbridge”. The Crimean War, WW1, WW2, Zbig’s Grand Chess Board, Rand papers… it was all about Crimea and ending Russian dominance of the black sea. This is the state of the world. It honestly is WW3. People just don’t understand what is at stake because Americans have been educated to not believe they are a global spanning empire when they are indeed a global spanning empire.

Add to this several million irregular troops.
Landings really aren’t a practical proposition – the US don’t have anywhere near enough troops and the logistics just don’t work.
It’s time to accept the loss and go home – and save the world from global depression and famine.’

I’ve read several articles recently warning that the SPR is in danger of collapsing if much more oil is drawn out, plus most other storage facilities are also close to empty. Supposedly the USSA produces enough oil to make gasoline, but it’s the wrong type of crude for diesel and jet fuel. Let’s see what kind of disaster that brings to the cost of delivering just about everything, if there’s even enough available.
That’s largely true, Mike. But both Canadian Athabasca oil and Venezeulan oil are great for the heavier products like Jet A, diesel and heating oil. While Keystone II is dead, probably forever, Trump has managed to undo much of the damage Biden did, and even negotiated a higher purchase agreement, and Keystone is flowing almost wide open now. Plus whatever is coming in from Venezuela. It’s enough that the futures traders are content with the heavy crude situation, anyway.

Using the Navy to protect US-flagged vessels in international waters is arguably legitimate.
The Strait of Hormuz is no such body of water. It’s only 21 nautical mile wide so both side are within the definition of territorial water (12 nautical miles from your shore) of Iran or Oman.
We have no standing authority to patrol the Strait and by law can be there based on treaties or declared war. Congress has given up some authority but they can’t write a law that contradicts the Constitution itself on declaration of war, that must be an Amendment that does not exist. The grey area is the Constitution allows for a reactive defense, which Jefferson did so it’s not a new angle. Trump’s using the customary pushing of line since Iran didn’t attack anyone to justify the attacks for Israel but the 60 day before declaration is itself probably not illegal strictly speaking.
Congress and the judiciary dropped the ball, but the executive usurping authority happened long ago before Trump. They could at any moment take it in front of the Supreme Court and say this stops now but they all benefit from the grift and it’s not their sons and daughters dying for the Empire.

A lot of it is simple demographics: America’s Jewish population is stagnant or shrinking, and its Muslim population is growing such that by 2030, Islam will beat Judaism as America’s largest non-Christian faith.
Furthermore, among Christians, support for Israel is shrinking for many reasons, among them a declining Evangelical population and a growing population of Catholics due to Hispanic immigration and younger people embracing Catholicism, as well as Orthodoxy. I say that because I expect the war to go very badly, soon and when it does, it won’t be just gas that gets expensive. Necessities are already exorbitantly expensive. Food is becoming unaffordable. $50 buys next to nothing when a pack of butter costs $5 and a dozen eggs $6 and then you need to find $50 to fill your vehicle’s tank. Then the mail comes and you’ve got a $200 power bill on top of the $2,000 property tax bill and that’s right now. Imagine these things costing 50 percent more. Then sportsball and porn won’t be enough, I suspect.
FWIW, I looked at my new OJ container this morning, 46 oz now, last one was 52 oz, same price (11% shrinkflation).
Orange juice was sold in 64 oz containers not long ago. I suspect the 46 oz figure is a psy-op; maybe when people see the 4 and the 6 they’ll think 64?
One store I go to still sells 1 gallon of Tropicana for $12.99. If you work out what I paid for 46 oz (4.99) it’s over $14 a gallon. There has been discounting on the smaller sizes to play within those parameters but, whoa. That gallon was $9.99 two years ago and $7.99 5 years ago.
I also noticed there is less pure juice of any kind and more “mixers” and “mocktails” by the same brands. In other words, water, artificial flavors, colors, and HFCS or sugar, at a price point noticeably below the real juices for the same size.
Some folks will say don’t drink fruit juice because sugar but I swear by a minimum hit of Vitamin C every morning and, knock on wood, I’m pretty healthy.
I don’t get the whole “don’t drink fruit juice” thing as most of us grew up with those frozen concentrated orange juice cans and there were very few obese people in the 70s/80s. It is the HFCS that has been added that makes most beverages out there undrinkable. You could even have the occasional Coke (in a 12 oz can or bottle) without any ill effect back then.

Yes, CPI has always been gamed. It’s why I don’t pay very much attention to it. But using the same exact guidelines, Biden’s core inflation was at least twice that, and there was nowhere near the squacking.
The biggest issue with CPI is substitution. (Shrinkflation does not change the per ounce inflation rate.) People who make do with burger instead of steak, or veggies instead of pizza is reflected in a lower CPI than it would have otherwise been.
A few months ago, I mentioned that I bought a freezer full of meat (mostly pork and poultry) on a dip in the price. Turns out it was not the bottom, so I’ve been buying to keep them topped up on the expectation that sometime they will start going back up.

Best deal I have been able to find on butter (real butter, not “butter” augmented with seed oils) is about $5 per pack. Even peanut butter is getting to be a rich man’s food.
