The president himself – or at least, his 35-year-old amanuensis – recently let fly with the AI image that accompanies this article. It depicts his war-mongering predecessor, The Chimp, who (like him) lied us into a war with a country that hadn’t started it. The Chimp infamously declared Mission Accomplished when the “mission” was decades away from being accomplished. Trump’s meme says his “mission” – the catastrophically stupid, evil war he started against Iran has similarly been “accomplished.” 
Has it been? The Iranian “regime” – all non-obsequious rival governments are “regimes” in the politicized etymology deployed by the regime that runs this county – remains quite in place. Wasn’t a primary goal of this “mission” to change the Iranian “regime”? Has the capacity of Iran to defend itself against attack been eliminated? Another “mission” that has not been “accomplished,” clear evidence of which is that Trump has decided to resort to economic war because the other war didn’t work.
The Strait was open to all traffic before the was began. It is now closed – effectively – by the Iranians, who decide which traffic is allowed to pass through it. Trump says the U.S. Navy controls it but this is a lie. The U.S. Navy is preventing whatever traffic the Iranians allow to pass from passing the blockade the U.S. Navy has imposed near the Strait’s exit. That is not quite the same thing as the Strait being open or under the control of the United States, with the implication that it’s “open.” Almost nothing is transiting the Strait, according to all the credible reporting. 
Iran continues to support its “proxies” in the Middle East, such as the Houthis, another “mission” not accomplished.
Then there is the supposed “nuclear threat” that was presented as the primary justification for attacking Iran. It echoes of the “weapons of mass destruction” The Chimp claimed Iraq was on the cusp of developing, any day now. An interesting aspect of the Iraq thing is that “Saddam” – as The Chimp styled Saddam Hussein, the leader of Iraq at the time – had been for decades a bosom buddy of the regime that runs this country. The regime used Iraq as a – wait for it! – proxy – to attack Iran, which it did. A long and bloody war between Iraq and Iran ensued, which included the use of poison gas by the Iraqi regime against the Iranian people. This was done with the connivance of the regime in Washington, by the way. Hundreds of thousands – possible more than a million – Iranians were killed during the course of this war.
Most Americans have forgotten all about it, assuming they ever deigned to notice. Of course, the Iranians haven’t forgotten, as you’d expect.
Is Trump aware of any of this history? If he is, does he pause to reflect on the consequences? Probably neither. His is the arrogance of Quinctilius Varus, the arrogant Roman general who marched three legions into the deep and dark forests of Germania – to be slaughtered to a man. Varus was fooled by Arminius, who promised it’d be an easy march for Varus and his legions. Arminius was in fact a German – supposedly “civilized” by the Romans, who’d become a trusted insider among the Roman elite. But Arminius remained German and let the Romans believe he was one of them or at least on the same side as them. To his credit, Arminius was faithful to his people. 
The same can be said of the man who led Trump – our Varus – into Iran. “Bibi” Netanyahu is faithful to his people, too. Trump – like Varus – was foolish enough to believe this constituted no conflict of interests. Varus believed Arminius shared Roman interests because Arminius led him to believe this, just as Netanyahu successfully persuaded Trump it was in America’s interests to attack Iran. And so he did.
That mission was accomplished.
Augustus – who was emperor at the time – is said by historians to have cried out for his lost legions as he lay dying. 
Does The Chimp – who is very much still alive – ever think about the legions lost in his war? Unlike Augustus, he seems untroubled by the ghosts of the dead. How about the Golden Golem of Greatness? He – like The Chimp – appears in process of persuading himself the “mission” has been “accomplished.” Hence the AI-generated meme, which mocks The Chimp while elevating himself.
Maybe he believes he isn’t our Varus – and that “Bibi” isn’t America’s Arminius. That the “mission” actually has been “accomplished.” It’s a luxury he can indulge, perhaps.

I can’t say whether there is – or is not – a God. Maybe. I do not dismiss the possibility – because I am always open to persuasive evidence. But I agree with Carl Sagan’s dictum that extraordinary claims – especially those that fly in the face of evidence to the contrary and/or natural law – require extraordinary evidence. If a friend of mine call me up to tell me he got a new dog, I believe him because I know there are such things as dogs and it comports with abundant evidence that people get dogs. It is likely that he did get a dog and – more important – it is totally believable that he got a dog. I myself have do so. It is reasonable for me to believe my friend got a dog without actually seeing it. On the other hand, if my friend calls to tell me he got a Bigfoot, I am not going to just believe it because he says so. I need to see the Bigfoot before I believe it. I remain skeptical absent actually seeing the Bigfoot myself.
I believe there is such a thing as gravity because the implacably obvious evidence persuades me there is such a thing as gravity. My belief, in other words, ensues inevitably from the (to me) hugely persuasive evidence that there is such a thing as gravity. I do not have to pretend to believe there is such a thing i.e., to have “faith” in it. I truly believe it. More finely, I cannot help believing it.
For me to have faith in the existence of a God, I’d have to deny my own mind, which doesn’t believe it because it does not find the evidence to be persuasive.

On the other matter: I dislike the idea that (if there is a heaven) admittance is only given to those who “believed” and had “faith” while they lived. That those who did not “believe” and who lacked “faith” are consigned to a horrible (and eternal) fate. This is, as I see it, a uniquely vicious doctrine. How can a man be punished for not believing in something? We cannot help not believing. Do you believe in Spider Man? I don’t? Should we be punished because our minds automatically tell us there is no such thing as Spider Man?
I am not persuaded God exists – much less that if this being exists, it is the being described in the Bible (or the Koran or the Book of Mormon or by Reverend Moon). My mind is skeptical and for that intellectual honesty, I am to be punished eternally? I cannot conceive a more petty and cruel proposition. A close second one is the proposition that only “belief” and “faith” punch one’s ticket to a happy eternity. Stalin could confess Jesus five minutes before he stops breathing and be admitted but a man who was decent and tried to do the right thing during his life goes to Hell just because he didn’t “believe”? Most of the world’s population does not “believe” in the Bible. Are they all going to Hell for eternity? This is a “loving” God?

Jim – all the politicians say they are going to stop deficit spending, even pay down the debt. None have done so. If you look at the debt curve – it goes up under red or blue. No Congress and no President has been able to take on the ever increasing debt problem. They all pay lip service then spend like drunken sailors.
Obviously, the increasing debt is going to become a huge existential threat – because eventually the interest will get so huge – as it has – we will be forced to cut spending elsewhere just to stay solvent. But will Congress find the will to cut spending anytime soon? No. Thus the national debt is going to fester and grow with no political will to do anything about it, until it becomes a huge crisis.
Thus I expect a sudden hegemon collapse from world stage. Push will come to shove and eventually the voters are going to demand the Pentacon funding be drastically reduced just so they can buy food and pay rent. Voters are going to vote Democratic Socialist – for their own survival. Big changes coming, basically crazy Trump has accelerate our decline and caused the nation to flip politically.

I’m not unsympathetic to the argument that the United States marched foolishly into both the Iraq and Iran wars. And let us add the 20-year-long stupidity in Afghanistan.
But let us be realistic here, it is not the same thing as Varus and his legions being slaughtered “to the last man.” The Chimp did not lose “legions” in Iraq.
The United States has been at war continuously since 2001, and my understanding of the total U.S. battle deaths is about 2,500 in Afghanistan, 4,000-4,500 in Iraq, and less than two dozen in the present nonsense. All volunteers, not draftees.
That is (practically) NOTHING compared the 58,000 soldiers we lost in Vietnam. It is not two hours worth of battle in World Wars One or Two. The British lost nearly 50,000 men at Gallipoli, and 20,000 in ONE day at the Somme. They lost 750,000 KIA out of a population of 45 million. That did not prevent Churchill (and Chamberlain) from inciting ANOTHER war against Germany — and declaring war on Germany first — twenty years later.
Sure, it started to cost them their empire by 1947, but it took decades for the stupidity of the British leadership to have consequences. And even after Churchill instigated WW II he was elected PM AGAIN in 1951.
The fact is that the United States has gotten away with this stupidity and recklessness precisely because it has NOT paid a significant price. Because legions of affirmative action mercenary soldiers in our paid “volunteer” corps and black single moms who joined the Army reserves to pay for community college are NOT getting slaughtered en masse.
The U.S. is a global empire and an imperial hegemon that cannot be taken down except by its own stupidity and arrogance. That day will come eventually, and (unfortunately) those of us along for the ride will get flushed down the toilet with it. But in the meanwhile the U.S. is pretty much free to beat up on hapless “terrorists” at will.

Except the deaths from wars occur after the fact, too. How many men and women have committed suicide due to the horrors of war that they could never unsee? How many men and women returned from Desert Storm spending the rest of their lives trying to beat cancer (due to stupid judgment calls from “top military brass” that put troops in danger) only to die a painful death?
I have never seen war, but many of us have experienced the after effects and how it has tortured the ones we love both physically and mentally. Wars are not just deaths upon a battlefield.
I agree with both your point and Eric’s. All I am saying is that from a geopolitical/imperial perspective, the American Empire has not been sufficiently weakened by its stupidity — YET.
Korea was not exactly a “win,” Vietnam was a loss, Afghanistan was a loss, Iraq was neither a win nor a loss, we also had Syria, Libya, Marines in Beirut in the 1980s, Somalia, Haiti, Serbia, Kosovo, etc. There have been no actual “wins” since World War II.
But who lives in Minneapolis? Somalis. What cars do we buy? Kias and Hyundais (and Japanese cars, whom we nuked in 1945). Been shopping for shoes and clothing lately? How much of that stuff in made in Vietnam? Who do we have our biggest trade deficit with? China, whom the Marines fought at Chosin in 1951.
The Empire has been expanding steadily despite decades and decades of questionable military campaigns and foreign policy choices.
It WILL come to an end… but the $40 trillion-and-climbing debt will have more influence on its demise than decades of getting a few thousand plebeian soldiers killed in stupid and arrogant campaigns here and there.

No politician has ever mentioned the very real national security threat that is the $40T national debt. By “national security”, I kinda mean quality of life, or standard of living, i.e. lack of crisis, stuff. The USA is not going to be overrun by any foreign army, so “national security” doesn’t really mean that.
Anyway, I betcha some Chinese economists and actuaries are considering crashing the US Treasury bond market in order to take down the US. Remove the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. Not that they would then physically come here, but they could buy all the companies here. (and I’m thinking natural resources, or tech companies)

The Romans lost a battle to Arminius in a forest. Their Republic/Empire went on for a long time after that also, but they never tried to conquer Germany or expand across the Rhine (they did do a campaign and recovered the eagles) because it being too costly. Supposedly US has/d 50K troops in the ME (10k over normal): Kuwait 13.5k; Qatar 10-13k, Bahrain 8-9k, UAE 3.5-5k; Jordan 3-4k, Saudi 3k, Iraq 2.5k, but where those troops are is not on the bases–especially after July attacks where Iran started hitting troop housing quarters. Civilians and some sailors were evacuated suddenly in early March (pack a suitcase; take some toiletries–you can google it), but evacuations were announced again in July.
No-one knows the actual casualty figures. Prof Marandi had said Iran in the first period of the war was aiming to kill/wound 500 Americans. They believed they did that, but Americans did not report that. In July they definitely did target areas where troops should be located. [Iran/Shia usually do not try to kill/wound a lot of people as consider that morally wrong.]
