Trump’s trick – and it worked really well for a really long time – was to make vague, appealing-sounding promises such as Make America Great Again. Who would argue with that? Exactly the point. It brilliantly cornered the opposition. Trump rode these vague promises back into office in 2024. They sounded great to millions of people.
Lately Trump has been making specific promises – $5k checks and much lower gas prices – after the midterms. He told the rubes the other night that he doesn’t “give a damn” about “people suffering at the pump,” because “we’re making a freaking fortune,” by which he means the oil cartels and also himself personally. He assures the rubes some crumbs will fall from the table, after the midterms.
What happens if they don’t?
It’s interesting to entertain this question because there is entertainment value in Trump’s act. Also in the response of the rubes to his act. It is interesting to watch some of them clap when Trump does his act. It’s an object lesson in political wife beating. You’ve seen it on TeeVee. The cops get called because some guy is beating up his wife; when the cops show up to arrest the guy, the black-and-blue wife defends the guy; sometimes, she’ll even attack the cops for trying to arrest the guy. Her mayuhn.
Trump’s people are like that at this point.
I suppose it’s possible the polls are all wrong and that there really is massive support for Making Sure That Iran Never Gets a Nuclear Weapon – no matter what it costs us (but not Trump and ExxonMobil) and that the GOP isn’t going to get rolled in the midterms about a week from now and that Trump will then send out $5k checks – which won’t cause even more/worse inflation – and the Iranians will shuffle hat in hand to the surrender table, causing the price of gas and diesel to fall even more dramatically than they have risen over the past seven months.
Maybe. I keep hoping that maybe one of these days when I am out digging in the field, I will find a crate full of gold bars buried by the Army of Northern Virginia on its retreat toward Appomattox. It is a possibility. If you believe, you shall receive says Creflo Dollar (and Joel Osteen). Trump is a species of evangelist. His powers – and promises – are similar.
Creflo Dollar and Joel Osteen (and Ernest Angley before them) made a career of making vague, appealing-sounding promises and never delivering on them, so it’s possible Trump will be able to maintain his act for the foreseeable future, too. After all, the vague-sounding promises about Making America Great Again worked and so did promises about $5k DOGE checks that were never sent and Epstein Files that were never fully released.
On the other hand, it is possible people have grown weary of the act because they can no longer afford to be entertained by the act. Some rough math: It costs about $25 more to fill up the average medium-small crossover now than it did before Trump reneged on his vague, appealing-sounding promises to avoid foreign wars (and even that he was going to end them) so about $100 on average per month for people who fill up their average medium-small crossover once a week. That’s about $700 so far this year and there are two months left in the year. If Trump’s most recent promises about post-midterm salvation do not manifest in actuality, the average American will have been War Taxed to the tune of about $1,000 by the beginning of 2027. This math does not include the galloping increases in the cost of groceries and other necessities.
Does a plurality of the electorate believe it’s all worth it, so that Iran Does Not Get a Nuclear Weapon? That’s about to be put to a vote, so we’ll see. And then we’ll see what happens the day after the results come in.
I wouldn’t hold your breath for that $5k check – or $2 gas.
But hope is a powerful drug. It keeps Creflo and Osteen in business. Maybe it will keep Trump and the GOP in business, too.
