One of the not-well-known things the Trump administration has done is cajole the European Union’s bureaucracy into agreeing there ought not to be different regulatory standards in Europe vs. America. More finely, that it ought not to be illegal to sell a vehicle made in Europe that meets Euro standards in the United States (and vice versa).
This is potentially a very big deal – and a good one, too.
Under the existing regime of legal there – but illegal here – European manufacturers are not allowed to sell their Euro-compliant diesel powered vehicles in the United States. Most Americans have no idea what they’re missing in that just about every make/model vehicle that’s available for sale in Europe is available with or even comes standard with a diesel engine – chiefly because the cost of gasoline is exorbitantly high (due to taxes on gas) and a diesel engine is typically about 30 percent more fuel efficient than a gasoline-powered engine of comparable size/power output.
European diesel emissions regs are very strict, so the issue as regards these engines not being legal to sell in the United States has nothing to do with them being “dirty.” It has to do with the regs (and “certification” regime) being different. The cost involved in “certifying” a diesel engine to be compliant with both the Euro and the U.S. regs is too high (and probably too much hassle) to bother with especially given the relatively low sales numbers of European brand vehicles generally.
So that’s why we don’t get them. Maybe now we will.
Manual-equipped vehicles are another desirable thing we may soon get more of – for essentially the same reason. The ratio of manual-to-automatic-equipped vehicles in Europe is much higher than it is here and much of that has to do with (again) different regulatory standards as well as different approaches to compliance. In the U.S., the regulatory regime (EPA) uses regulations – and the cost of complying with them – to discourage people from buying vehicles that use more rather than less gas. Specifically, all new vehicles must endeavor to be “CAFE compliant” – that is, score some arbitrary number such as 35.5 MPG on a government fuel-economy certification test. The manufacturers tweak – that is, program – the drivetrains of their vehicles to do as well as possible on the tests.
Specifically, program they program their transmissions. The automatic transmissions.
A manual transmission is controlled (by the driver) rather than by programming. It cannot be set up (programmed) to achieve the best-possible score on a government certification test. There is an unpredictable human controlled element. This has served as a major incentive for vehicle manufacturers to make automatics standard. This is why there are so few new vehicles available for sale in the U.S. that even offer manuals (which has led to most people under 35 never learning how to drive a manual-equipped car, reducing demand for cars with manuals).
In Europe, the approach is to use gas taxes to “incentivize” people to buy vehicles that are more rather than less “efficient,” but people are more at liberty to buy what they want because the manufacturers are more at liberty to build different types of vehicles – including vehicles with manual transmissions. The culture in Europe is also different in that Europeans in general enjoy driving manual-equipped vehicles and because so many enjoy it (and know how to) there is more demand for such vehicles.
Well, more such vehicles could be on their way here. Specifically, manual-equipped versions of models that are already available here – just not with manual transmissions (or diesel engines) and we have Trump to thank for that.
Europeans might want to thank him, too.
The agreement, remember, works both ways and that means it would be legal for American vehicle manufacturers to sell vehicles in Europe that aren’t compliant with the latest/most ridiculous “safety” standards requiring external airbags for pedestrians and bicyclists (yes, really) as well as “head impact zones” on the hoods of new vehicles. Europeans would be freed to buy vehicles made in the U.S. which does not yet impose such requirements.
Unsurprisingly, “European road safety and transport environmental groups are raising the alarm over a potential sharing of vehicle standards hidden in the European Union’s trade deal with the U.S.,” according to a news story published by Ward’s Automotive. “They warn that allowing all American-made vehicles into the heavily regulated European market could rapidly increase road accident fatalities and push up CO2 emissions from the Continent’s fleets.”
“A single sentence in Article 8 of the framework trade agreement between the two western partners may open the door to acceptance of the U.S.’s vehicle-safety standards that are far removed from those of the EU in terms of vulnerable road users’ protection.”
It’s interesting, isn’t it, how deeply saturated even news coverage of such business is with unconscious ideological cant. As in “vulnerable road users.” Always the asserted dangers taken as givens. Always the insipid, cloying, sub-rosa guilt-tripping.
The good news is it’s a done deal.
“With respect to automobiles, the United States and the European Union intend to accept and provide mutual recognition to each other’s standards” – so saith a joint statement issued a couple of weeks ago by both parties.
Sometimes it’s not al bad news. This is one of those times.

A “Thelma & Louise” moment interrupted regarding,
Diesel ICE motor conveyances!!!!
BOY…. the distant growling NOISE interrupted my deliberations with my Kool Girlee while debating where to go next after climbing the chain to the summit of Ayers Rock NT…..
Beautiful sunrise , cool color changes on the rock at dawn….
“Hey Sweepea, you know we’re halfway around the World already…..why don’t we just keep going”?……So we did. However,
while savoring the following travel possibilities…What happens?
Some Ahole in a diesel wheeled conveyance…. ruins the moment!! Heaven forbid.
Well, I wait to chasten the driver AND….back off …….
THE S.O.B. is piloting some Monster called an “Australian Road Train”……
Hmmm, at times, discretion is the better part of valor…….
Onward through the fog…
Really? You were, “climbing the chain to the summit of Ayers Rock NT…..”?
With, … a girl?
Wow.
Thought you were stranded in CT.
Sorry Spartan kid,
I will “time stamp” all the attempted travel shoe-ins going forward….
e.g. my Climbers certificate was stamped on 06/03/1998…
I am presently marooned in CT for the time being.
Does this mean Elon will now be free to sell the Cybertruck in Europe?
That may actually boost his sales numbers by a dozen or so!
And Eric, the EU does tax diesel and gas heavily, but that’s far from the only approach they take toward ‘reducing carbon pollution’ [sic].
Fines apply should manufacturers not meet their mandated quotas on sales of EVs and, at least for now, PHEVs.
Which has led to Britain – not nominally in the EU, but certainly so in the mind of its ruling class – now experiencing the phenomenon of ‘zero mileage used cars’. This is where car makers register the EV’s as sold so as to pad their quotas, park them at dealers’ lots, and then – hopefully – sell them as used to the public at a large discount.
It is quite remarkable how far the car makers are prepared to comply with nonsensical rules, incurring billion-dollar losses in the process. When all that is really required is for enough of them to get together and just tell the politicians to eff off.
Which also begs the question: Where are the shareholders in all this?
RE: “Where are the shareholders in all this?”
In a huddle, trying to figure out how best to ruin the world, …and profit from it..
Did you see the stock plunge of Victoria’s Secret? ‘Someone’ made out like a bandit. …That sheet was, planned.
The shareholders are mostly pension funds and they don’t actually vote their shares. All the votes are wrapped up by Jewish managed banks like Blackrock, Vanguard and State Street.
Larry Fink, yes he is one, recently took over as chairman of WEF (World Economic Forum in Davos). Fink, like all the rest of them, pushes diversity, wokism, warmism, and most of all, death penalty for antisemitism.
That response seems like nonsense wrapped in an enigma.
Panties get all bunched up again?
Hopefully, the EU will implode soon so a lot of their auto regulations will be recalled by the manufacturers. I doubt NHTSA will allow superior European lighting and mirrors though.
It’s turning into a Caliphate already, but that’s not necessarily good news for the car industry.
In France, the ‘local’ Muslims have already presented their future ‘vision’ for that country.
It includes things like banning women from driving altogether.
But hey, the sales of camels will likely benefit.
I’ve never understood Mooselims even keeping women around when for them a piece af ass involves a braying quadruped…
I smell a rat. I would bet we end up with ALL the regs. Manufacturers need consistency. They could care less what they are, just that they are very hard to do to keep the third world out. And keep getting harder to trip up ‘other’ Manuf.
So do I. I can also remember a time when euro standards were much less stringent than the usa. I wonder what happened. We could end up with the worst of both worlds.
I also think EU is attempting to put ‘filters’ on gas cars like our current Tier4 diesel regs?? Crazy.
IDK what their diesel regs are.
How about just go to early 2000’s regs for all, and compete freely? Of course that will never happen.
“ How about just go to early 2000’s regs”
SMH
What makes 2000 magical?
nothing magical, just picked a time before late 2000’s, when it appeared to me that designs started going haywire and very complex for fractions of mpg (and the dreaded CO2!).
Fair enough but there is nothing magical about 2000’s.
By 1990 most cars were running some version of fuel injection, had catalysts and were very clean running.
In the 70’s, many non-domestic OEM’s had clean running analog fuel injection. Open loop but still much cleaner burning and more efficient than carbs.
And that’s not to say that carbs are inherently bad or can’t be made to run clean.
The point being once you agree to let the Government regulate a little . . . You’ve agreed to it all and our choices will be limited.
And that is why we find ourselves where we are at.
I have no more interest in that “ingenium”, eurotrash, over complicated hybrid diesel that leads this article than a US tier4 compliance engine. That really isn’t much of a “choice” when you get down to it.
Relaxing prohibitions is a good step on the way to eliminating them.
Restoring freedom is the only way to make America great again, until the control freaks are put back in their place, and the people are masters and the government in all its manifestations are servants, there can be no America.
A man can dream.
…I hope your dreams come true.
…What’s Plan B?
Surly, so far, they’ve expired Plan B, thwarted it, even. …Mostly.
The naive optimism is hilarious.
Imagine thinking that two autocratic regimes agreeing on standards is going to result in more freedom.
They say hope springs eternal.
Hi Burn.
I never thought about that. But yeah it figures that’s what will happen.
Perhaps, distill that down some?>
“two autocratic regimes agreeing on standards is going to result in more freedom.”
How would you say that to your grandma or a 14 yr old inheriting all this sheet in a way they could understand what you are saying?
“How would you say that to your grandma or a 14 yr old inheriting all this sheet in a way they could understand what you are saying?”
It’s da Jews. Every.Single.Time all across history. Thrown out of 109 countries over 1000 times.
I am a bit confused. Are jues thrown out everywhere, or they are in charge everywhere? It doesn’t compute
‘The good news is that it’s a done deal.’ — eric
True, as far as the parties to it are concerned. But uncertainty looms with a Court of Appeals ruling holding that IEEPA (Trump’s claimed statutory authority) does not grant him the necessary power. An emergency appeal to the Supreme Court is underway. From an NYT article:
‘Mr. Trump’s top aides have said that a loss [in court] could lead to a diplomatic embarrassment. They raised particular concern about trade deals the president brokered with the EU and other nations, based on tariffs imposed under the emergency powers act.’
https://archive.ph/Vp4Dv#selection-941.0-941.356
Article 1, Section 8 couldn’t be plainer: ‘Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises.’ But what happens in emergencies, when Congress is out of town? Trump, in his customary self-effacing fashion, says ‘I can do anything I want.‘ But the high court is likely to disagree.
Having hired ghostwriter Tony Schwartz to pen Trump: The Art of the Deal, the Orange One is in his element, wheeling and dealing. It’s a SALE-ebration, folks! But the stodgy old Founders in their powdered wigs designed a web of checks and balances to restrain would-be autocrats.
In the unlikely event that Orange Man gets away with his
offensesdeals, foreign investors must realize that the ground rules for trading with the US can change overnight. No one wants to commit billions to industrial plants whose profitability can be erased by emergency decree. What’s the payback on Volkswagen’s Scout Motors plant lookin’ like these days? In the words of an old pop song, ‘Just turn off the lights, cuz I don’t wanna see!‘ 🙁
‘Trump cited [Trump: The Art of the Deal] as his second-favorite book after the Bible. [Ghostwriter Tony] Schwartz called ghost-writing the book his “greatest regret in life, without question.”
‘In 2019, Schwartz suggested that the work be “recategorized as fiction.” He also stated that if it were to be written today it would be very different and titled The Sociopath. Schwartz repeated his self-criticism on Good Morning America, saying he had “put lipstick on a pig.”
‘Trump said in his 2016 presidential campaign that Trump: The Art of the Deal is “the No. 1 selling business book of all time.” — Wikipedia
As we say in Da Big Apple, “YEAH, RIGHT!!”
Man, Trump appears to be enjoying a rent-free stay in your heard, Jim H. I think you might have a touch of the TDS. lol
So, does that mean the diesel Golf will come with external airbags if sold here? I dare say that will make for some madcap merriment when those cars are parked in Da’ Hood. Louisville Slugger, meet VW Bumper.
To a degree I agree with Pollution abatement; littering being trespass. However, actual pollutants, as you’ve pointed out Eric, were eliminated ~35 years ago. Now we have machines cranking out plant food, CO2, which one would think is a plus for the “Greens” but, alas…
Permanent GovCo divisions to solve temporary problems is the bane of our existence.
Dang, RE: “external airbags”… did you just say, Brawndo makes plants grow?
“In Europe, the approach is to use gas taxes to “incentivize” people to buy vehicles that are more rather than less “efficient,””
I would say that it is much more about the Noahide empire extracting revenue from the mind numbed goyim. In Switzerland the gas prices have to remain synchronized with their EU neighbors or else the EU will retaliate in any number of ways. In all these cases, and the US too, the tax revenue flows into the general fund just like the speeding ticket revenue.
Of course the same thing happened when Bronfam and the Jewish gangsters decided that Switzerland was hiding “Nazi Gold”. Switzerland ended up paying billions in “reparations” to the Jews because the Swiss had preferred trade with Germany over the kind of starvation that Jews are gleefully inflicting on Palestine.
Of course the Nazi gold blackmail was not enough, it never is with Jews. With Jews the only way to make it stop is to voluntarily become their slaves. Next came Jewish demands for reparations for supposed Jewish numbered bank accounts who were supposedly holocausted by masturbation machines and nuclear weapons used at concentration camps. The Jews extracted billions from Swiss banks when only a small handful of these numbered accounts could ever be found. The Jews will keep milking their fake holocaust for eternity, now claiming that the trauma has become genetic and is passed on to succeeding generations.
The Jews who own and operate the US figured out how vulnerable Switzerland was and they shook down the Swiss banks even more with fines due to “Fatca” undeclared bank accounts in 2012.
This now circles back to the lack of choice of diesel engines in the US. You see the Jew extortion racket next focused on diesel engines in support of their perpetual shakedown.
VW, which had been created by the German people making prepayments on the beetle in the late 1930’s was a prime target. It was almost as “Nazi” as Mercedes Benz who had already been shaken down in 2007 by being forced to shell out approximately $650 million to cover Chrysler’s debt and restructuring costs, effectively providing a financial incentive for Cerberus Capital Management, L.P., a New York-based private equity firm founded in 1992 by the Jew Stephen Feinberg to assume control.
So what happened next was VW was forced to cough up $20 billion for using Bosch software to optimize the injection systems of its diesels to get them to meet EPA emissions standards. This optimization is not that different from the optimization of automatic transmissions to be more fuel efficient to meet CAFE standards. It did not matter that US manufacturers used the same software as VW. Jewish gangsters always use the same techniques to make a shakedown, whether its Moe Dalitz in Las Vegas, Henry Kissinger in Vietnam, Anthony Blinkin in Ukraine or Bibi Netanyahu in Occupied Palestine.
So now no European automobile manufacturer would risk billions to bring a diesel to the US. In fact, the Jews in Europe have worked with the Jews in the US to pretty much destroy the diesel engined passenger car in order to force people into EV’s. But even worse, Howard Lutnick, the other half of Trump’s Jewish brain, has decided that these Jewish gangster shakedowns have been so successful that they should be applied to every country on the planet. This is the real purpose of “Trump’s Tariff”: Make da Goyim pay until they have so much debt they beg the Jews to become their slaves.
Your knowledge of history is rather truncated.
You are not aware that there was a thriving goy civilization on Mars, about 5000 years ago. Until Jooz sucked it dry, that is.
Having used Mars up, Da Jooz flew to Eirth.
My rabbi says so. I am sure he knows what he is talking about.
And now Mars is uninhabitable. You should shout lauder from every rooftop about the Joo danger. Humanity will be eternally grateful to you.
Instead of making an argument against Brosi’s post on the merits, AG responds with nonsense. All you have in response is snark, AG? I’ll say it again, you’re not very good as this Hasbara stuff.
AG, make a real argument that Brosi’s assessment has no merit. I really mean it, because I’m not entirely sure what Brosi is talking about.
I am talking about the noahide nightmare we are living in where our entire civilization is being tormented and tortured by greedy psychopathic Jews. The end destination is Gaza for us all. There will be no cheap, reliable and efficient diesel powered automobiles for anyone, let alone flyover country libertarians.
Brics/SCO has washed their hands of the Jewish cesspool the west has become. Klaus Schwab spelled it all out years ago: You will own nothing and you will be happy [being a slave to the Jews]. If you are really good the Jews might allow you a short trip out of your 15 minute city in the self driving taxi they will send to spy on you, er, pick you up.
“Mercedes Benz who had already been shaken down in 2007 by being forced to shell out approximately $650 million to cover Chrysler’s debt and restructuring costs”
What a line of BS.
Need I remind folks that Chrysler was purchased by Daimler in 1998 and that it was highly profitable on the lead up to its takeover by Daimler. What was left of Chrysler was run by Daimler and its leadership from 1998 – 2007.
To act like Chrysler was running up debt and the one driving restructuring costs is absurd. Daimler was in charge!
Restructuring costs and technology transfer fees under the guise of R&D charges were the means by which Daimler funneled cash out of Chrysler into Daimler.
Let’s review a few of the names of who was in charge of Chrysler immediately following the “merger”:
Jürgen Schrempp
Dieter Zetsche
Wolfgang Bernhard
I’ll leave it to others to look up these characters but I assure you they were all Germans.
Later in the game around 2000 – a POS named Tom LaSorda (from GM) was brought in by Daimler and ultimately he was the American face of German management. This introduction of LaSorda seemingly coincided with the period when the Germans finally realized that they had finished gutting Chrysler and running it into the ground. At that point the Germans no longer wanted to have their names associated with the $30B+ failure that the “merger” entailed.
Since LaSorda seemed to be fond of running companies into the ground, he later moved over to Fiskar and saw them into bankruptcy as well.
I was pointing out how a Jewish run private equity fund ended up squeezing Daimler. We see this today where Paul Singer, second largest contributor to AIPAC, is using Marco Rubio to squeeze Citgo gas stations across the US away from Venezuela where Trump is engaging in gun-boat diplomacy.
I am Swiss, and I have no great love for Daimler. They typify the stereotype of the arrogant German. Of course Chrysler quality control and automotive technology in 1998 was lagging everyone else in the industry. Jeep and Dodge Trucks were the cash cows. Daimler wanted in on that, Daimler was ready to invest in spreading diesel passenger car technology to the US, and Daimler thought it could sell diesel powered Jeeps manufactured in Eurostar in Graz across Europe.
This is actually quite pertinent to this thread. Daimler’s bet on diesels in the US almost bankrupted it and it did bankrupt Chrysler.
Now the German automotive industry is in palliative care. With ultra-expensive energy and ultra-high taxes and the destruction of Germany’s “lebensraum” strategy of partnering with Russians, German industry is a piling heap of stinky dung.
But I stand by my main point: don’t expect inexpensive diesels to show up in the US any time soon.
I’ll just highlight this: “make a real argument that Brosi’s assessment has no merit. I really mean it, because I’m not entirely sure what Brosi is talking about.”
Are you guys arguing with a retard, a bot, or,… are you really that clueless?
This is a keeper. It’s likely that the cause of Liberty is lost if this is The Best there is.
“I’m not entirely sure what Brosi is talking about.”
Me, neither. I think he is just hallucinating
Would love to see the reintroduction of the diesel in passenger cars here in the “land of the free”. I’m not holding my breath tho.
Yes, “where ‘we’ are free.”
Keyword, ‘we’. Who is, ‘we’? It ain’t, us.
Eric: More finely, that it ought not to be illegal to sell a vehicle made in Europe that meets Euro standards in the United States (and vice versa).
Now let’s do Mexico. Perhaps if this occurs Eric will be able to review and buy a Hilux Champ for his very own. However a Thai reviewer of a Thai made Hilux showed welding that was worse than what was on his bicycle.
As someone who actually rides a bicycle almost daily, I get the feeling that a lot of responsibility for bicycle being hit by cars is because the bicyclist insists on running lights, stop signs being ignored, splitting lanes, weaving all over the road especially on over just over the crest of the hill. I generally pull as far over as I can when I hear a car coming; that means no ear buds if you want to live another day. An external powered speaker is what I use; loud enough to listen to music but quiet enough to hear traffic coming up behind you.
Why is Toyota always associated with rotting steel frames and sloppy welds ?
Hi Rain.
In the US the frames were made by a third party and apparently the anti-rust coating was crap. I don’t know who did the frame on the Thailand built truck. To make it cheaper even the rear tail light bulb sockets are exposed to water thrown off by the rear wheels and yes a protective cover is available as an option!!!!
Sadly it’s the crapification of the world and you have to check everything now. On the upside shrimp now comes with a built in Cesium based heater from Wallyworld. Progress…….
The Tacoma/Tundra fiasco was due to the frame subcontractor, Dana. That Dana-Spicer, the ones who also made frames for Ford, axles, gaskets and everything else for everyone.
https://www.reuters.com/article/business/autos-transportation/dana-pays-25-million-to-toyota-to-settle-tacoma-claim-idUSTRE70B7KZ/
Somewhere in the interim Dana sold the frame business to Metalsa, which is a Mexican automobile suppler.
Who later was awarded by Toyota and to my knowledge is still a primary supplier of frames to Toyota North America, having frame plants on both sides of the border.
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/metalsa-receives-supplier-awards-from-toyota-300048713.html
https://www.aftermarketnews.com/dana-to-sell-structural-products-business-to-metalsa-s-a-de-c-v/
You seem a bit ignorant, ‘Rain’. RE: “Why is Toyota always associated with rotting steel frames and sloppy welds ?”
The answer is: because your overlords don’t allow them to undercoat the frame before it’s imported & No One Cares about the rest.
A.k.a. your overlords want your sheet to rust out from under you. That’s, The Plan.
Did you know… oh what’s the point?
“It’s ClownWorld, Jake”.
I don’t agree. Cars sold in the US since the 2007-11 period have lousy line of sight and field of view due to large window pillars and a 30 percent smaller greenhouse. I believe that’s what is behind the increase in pedestrian deaths. It has nothing to do with impact proteciton or anything like that.
It doesn’t matter. No Body listens to facts and reason.
