The other night, I was watching a new Robin Hood series – until it became unwatchable. The why is because of the lie we’re supposed to let pass by – out of fear we might cause offense. But lies are by their nature offensive. It is right to not let them pass by, especially on account of some misplaced concern that to notice them might cause offense.
The latter is what the liars are counting on.
The lie in this case was presented about two episodes in. There is a scene depicting a sort of counsel of nobles, called by the baddie of the story – the sheriff of Nottingham. Now, Robin Hood is a story set in late 12th century England, about a century after the Norman conquest in 1066. In the story, Robin of Loxley is a member of the nobility – an earl – who campaigned in the crusades with Richard I, known to history as the Lionheart on account of his legendary bravery.
Robin returns to England to resume his role but ends up at odds with the sheriff over the latter’s abuse of the peasants and becomes an outlaw – Robin Hood. Most everyone knows the gist of the story. But did you know there were black English nobles in late 12th century England?
Neither did I.
So I was startled to see one depicted in the show, during a council scene involving the sheriff and the local lords – because even if there were any black people in 12th century England, it is an absolute certainty none of them were nobles. Sorry. It’s not a disparagement. It’s just not true.
Is it racist to object to this lie?
Some will probably say so, of course. Because Inclusion or some such. Maybe because after all, Robin Hood is a fictional story and so it is ok to alter the story. That might fly if it weren’t completely at odds with the background truth of the story. Richard I was real and 12th century England was a real place and time and it is far worse than just silly to insert what was not there into that time and place. It is to affront reality. It is a deliberate attempt to change it, in the minds of people who don’t know the truth about history. A kid watching this series might have no idea that 12th century England was not “diverse.” Sorry, it just wasn’t. Certainly not in terms of its ruling classes, the nobility and the clergy. The show’s presentation of a different reality is startling to anyone who does know the facts about 12th century England.
Also Tudor England, during the reign of Henry VIII – the son of the king (Henry VII) who slew Richard III on the battlefield at Bosworth in 1485. There is another streaming series – about Henry VIII – starring Damian Lewis as Henry – that aired back in 2015. There is a completely risible but also sinister scene in this one, too. Henry is shown at the head of a table around which sit his principal nobles. The camera pans around them and – would you believe it? – a black member of Henry VIII’s court!
That is what they want people to see, at any rate. And why do they want people to see it? In order for them to believe it.
But that is to assert an untruth. The facts of history ought not to be diddled with and when they are, the object is to malignant. It is an effort change the past and so alter the present and the future. This seems to be what is wanted. England – Europe – was always “diverse.” They want to smuggle in this lie via the hope that it will not be called out, out of fear of being called a racist for pointing out that it just wasn’t so.
We saw something similar happen with AI creating darkened-up images of our non-diverse Founding Fathers. The play Hamilton is another obvious example. The real historical man (who of course was white) played by a black man. We’re expected not to notice and even to applaud. Many do. Yet it is to applaud a lie and something more. The effort to get people to lie to themselves. Of course, this only goes in one direction. You can imagine the immediate and volcanic outrage that would pour forth were a TV series about Martin Luther King to cast a white man in the role.
TV has become as unwatchable as movies. Not solely because most of it is unimaginative dreck and poorly acted but – far worse – because of the effronterous and malignant attempt to recast reality.
We abet this by pretending not to see it – or be offended by it. We can end it by the simple expedient of turning it off.

The entertainment industries are saturated with DEI hires, from bottom to top. We can expect nothing less than a revision of history and thus, truth from these imbeciles until we stop giving them our money.
Last Christmas, I took the wife and kids to see “A Christmas Carol” at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. “Surely not!” I thought as I considered the possibility that diversity be injected into even this wholesome play.
Lo and behold, the most egregious lies showed their diverse faces in the form of Bob Cratchit’s kids. A 300 pound Samoan kid and a daughter that definitely didn’t need a DNA test to confirm infidelity on the part of Mrs. Cratchit. The Samoan kid mostly stood in his spot with a dumbfounded look on his chubby face until it was time to recite a line or two with the refined acting ability of a potato. Surely, I thought, somewhere there is a Moana play happening where his diverse features could be put to better use.
Everyone in the 99% white audience didn’t seem to notice or care. No hushed murmurs or giggles could be heard (unless someone overheard my “DNA test” comment to my wife).
P.S. Leaving the theatre, my kids had to witness a tranny walking past us on the sidewalk.
I retreat further and further away from the modern world. I wonder if aging people of all generations felt the same way. Probably.
And here I thought that this kind of thing happened only in places like California, where I live. I guess that wokeness has infiltrated Oklahoma as well.

Which reminds me… in the architectural industry, we have regulations that force us to design spaces for “persons of size”. These people are who we used to call fat asses. Any time they were embarrassed in public when they couldn’t fit through a door without turning sideways, it was considered motivation to change their unhealthy ways. Not today. My feeling is that all the good stuff has already been made.

I find it astonishing and horrifying to watch and read that half the United States population is begging for and demanding such enslavement. It truly stems from a lack of education, stupidity, and sheer greed. The “something-for-nothings” who think everything is free–until, as you correctly state, it is not. People need to really read on Karl Marx (he was lazy and dabbled in Satanism) before they decide Communism and slavery is better than Capitalism (the real kind). I digitized much of the halfway-decent, silly, mostly harmless 50s/60s/70s TV shows & movie classics, plus a smattering of “best of” classic TV commercials I accumulated over the years — all onto a pair of cheap USB HDDs, served to family & friends by a Plex server running on a cheap, tiny, low-power RaspberryPi5. No Hulu, Netflix, Disney+, cable, etc. My kids got to grow up with much of the stuff I grew up with … and are much better off for it.

In my opinion, almost no movie or TV show less than 10 years old is worth watching. One’s time would be better spent looking out your window.
I have a catalogue of 300 plus videos, TV and movies, and only a handful get frequently watched. I could probably increase that to 15 years old, maybe 20, as I get older.
Basically there are two Robin Hood’s. There’s a conservative one, who primarily goes after tax monies and returns it to its rightful owners, and the liberal/quasi-socialist one, who robs the rich to give to the poor. Both versions show up, to some degree, over a vast expanse of time, which I find rather interesting. Marx and Engels didn’t really invent communism, they just popularized it & maybe added a little bit of philosophical framework/justification.
The last 4 good TV shows already got canceled. So there’s no point in having a TV anymore.

When I watch TV (rarely), I find I watch old shows and movies. It’s rare I watch something new.
I can’t imagine how Amazon is going to ruin the 007 series. It’s going to be bad. Everything DEI touches turns to garbage. They could have just ended it, since Bond dies in the last movie….

It was the same with the Thor movies… they cast Heimdall – the great white god- from viking mythology as a black man. He’s a good actor, but I would expect someone like that to be the guy who played Raidan in the old Mortal Combat movie or look like Gandalf the White. What are the limits of “artistic license”? Classic artwork is a prime example, with all the religious figures, as the subjects, being white Europeans. I’m sure no one in ancient Judea had a white complexion.
My personal take is if the production is trying to be a historic replica or if it’s main thrust is a retelling of history. Because yes, the history was not like that. I haven’t turned on a TV on my own in almost 40 years. The last primetime show I watched was Dallas sometime after 1987.
I got cable for a couple of years in the 1990s and watched reruns of Dukes of Hazard, the Rockford files and Dallas.
TV started to get shitty in the late 70’s and early 1980s, just like just about everything else.
As far as TV news, I started seeking alternatives beginning in the early 1990’s. It was in 92, I knew the networks were lying. As time passed it became more obvious.
Bottom line: TV sucks. I have one. It’s a chinese $130 model from Wal Mart. It’s used to play DVDs about 1x a year. It will last my lifetime

For what must have been TRILLIONS spent over the decades by Hollyjewood, there have been precious few good shows or movies. I disconnected over 30 years ago. Even the few good things, like the original Twilight Zone, while I can appreciate, I find I can no longer just sit there like a lump and passively watch something. After you quit watching for a while, you realize what an obscene waste of time watching TV is- even the good stuff. Plus, once you know a little, you become too critical, as you can see the proverbial feces behind the curtain.

Hence, where we are today in the atrocity phase.

Can a black actor not try out or get any parts except depicting a slave in western society until the movie/tv “story” is after 1964? Is Othello the only Shakespeare role a black could play? You were the one (I believe) that just had some video of a black soft shoe dancer who to get a role in the movie (if they wanted to show his dancing talent) had to play a derelict which was the only way “white” society would tolerate depicting a black person at that time without causing controversy and said how awful it was (you may have blamed the black man for taking this role). Not sure how you would feel in Elizabethan England when all female roles were played by males. In our day only female playing a male role is Peter Pan which should tell everyone something about parents leaving their children with a dog baby sitter, Never Never Land not being a nice place for Lost Boys who after a dose of fairy dust never get back the way they were, and Captain Hook/walking the plank which only Michael Jackson seemed to realize.
From Sidney Potier to Morgan Freeman, to Denzel Washington, black actors have had great success on their own merits. Not playing gangsta types, either. Mostly deep, sophisticated characters. They never needed to play white characters to achieve “equity”, “diversity” or “anti-racism”. Life is full of diversity as it is.
Still I think it’s pretty limiting to say no black/oriental/Indian people could be classical stage actors and play the part of Oedipus, King Lear, MacBeth because they are the wrong color. But I guess it has to be what an audience will pay to see. It seems Eric is still inclined to see skin color as a distinguishing factor, but as George Wallace said the country would move toward a brown color once separation of the races was not enforced.
I feel the same about the ‘trans’ issue. Who complained about Angie Dickinson playing a policeman? How realistic is that? We see what happens when men play women’s sports (it must be outlawed!). I wonder if “policewoman” (or “Judging Amy” or “Friends”) would have happened without birth control pill. Now there is really no need of women in order to reproduce the species. In fact youth are taught there are too many people. Sex act has been detached from reproduction. What is a woman without childbearing? Is there any real difference between the sexes or merely a cosmetic difference which can be simulated/overcome by surgery, hormones, technology? Is gender now a feeling about how you want to look/dress today and who with/what kind of sex you want to have later? How long have we had unisex clothes and hair stylists and cross-dressing (at least by women)? Do youth today really see a difference between mother/father or is it more parent1 and parent2?

There’s a lot going on here. Jesus is depicted a lot browner in South America, sometimes he’s depicted as Black. Personally I think he’d like that, and I think he is (in part) all of those, at the same time. There might well be an element of sacrificing “historical” accuracy for the sake of identity politics run amok. But there is also a lot more racial/ethnic diversity today than there was even 20-30 years ago, and we (meaning all people — I’m as lily-white as it gets, maybe even more so than Elizabeth Warren) make our mythical figures look like us. It’s what we do. It’s part of what keeps them relevant. It makes it easier to see a little bit of ourselves in the characters, which helps us to understand both ourselves and the characters. The characters approach various archetypes…at some level it becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible, to separate history from mythology, and mythology from religion. We are more polytheistic than we think we are. Where I think this runs amok, is when it devolves into race as a power dynamic or denigrating people of non-color. What you look like, is what you look like, and how you treat other people is how you treat other people.

We never made to New England. That was to be the trip to for our 25th anniversary, but hubby went into business for himself back in July and vacations are now something I can only dream about.
Both “The Bob Newhart Show” (Suzanne Pleshette) and “Newhart” (Mary Frann) are good, but I’m an X-er. “Newhart” spanned my high school and college years, however, and that gets my vote for priority.
Newhart’s later series, “Bob” and “George and Leo”, are not worth the effort.

Season 1 of Saturday Night Live with Chevy Chase and John Belushi!
Me and a friend went to the theatre and watched the “Saturday Night Live” movie when it came out in the theatre earlier this year. The movie detailed the back story and details of how the TV program came into being. And how, right up to the very night, no one was sure if anyone was going to pull it off, and an alternate program was selected just in case. I thought the movie was going to be a boring kind of documentary, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was a good watch. And also, talk about a blast from the past, made me feel young again (remembering) and also old, too, at the same time.

Over the years (since COVID) I have also watched Dallas, How I Met Your Mother, Wings, and Suits (not the LA version though…it wasn’t good).
Hubby and I have watched most of the dramas over the years while they were still filming (Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Goliath, and anything by Taylor Sheridan). I will sit down and watch anything with Kevin Costner, Billy Bob Thornton, and Kurt Russell. So I am waiting for Landman to return this fall.
I tried watching China Beach the other night and so far it isn’t sticking, but I want to give it another episode or two before I pull the plug. I have never watched an episode of ER so I may give that one a whirl as well.

Before Cheers, we have watched Who’s the Boss, The Wonder Years, Moonlighting (Bruce Willis was hilarious!), probably a few more that I can’t remember.
For me, I can’t stand the vulgarity in new shows. It’s like everything on TV is rated R (or X in some cases). You have to go back 30 years to get wholesome entertainment that you wouldn’t be embarrassed to watch with your kids.
Hi RS, I loved watching Looney Tunes & Bug’s Bunny. Do not forget Wile E. trying to blow up the Road Runner. Can you imagine playing these cartoons nowadays? Good grief, parents would pitch a fit! I have some of the boxed sets (from Amazon). On one of the seasons, Whoop Dee Do (Whoopie, aka, Karen-no lie!) Goldberg was “featured” at the beginning of the cartoons, explaining how racism existed then, how it was wrong then as it is now, yada yada. Basically, “this is a politically correct, hurtful cartoon, and we are warning the snow flakes ahead of time”. Thankfully, Elmer Fudd still had his gun when he was out hunting rabbits, and Wile E. was still trying explosives out on the Road Runner.

My kids grew up on those cartoons! It was what we watched. I also watched He-Man, She-RA, Jem, and GI Joe (a child of the 80s). Even twenty years ago when my kiddos started coming around I could not deal with the current cartoons at that time…Peppa Pig, Caillou, Teletubbies…ugh! The problem is nobody is watching late night TV. Viewership is down 72% over the last decade. Advertising dollars have dropped from $439 million a year in 2018 to $221 million a year in 2024.
We know Colbert was losing $40 million per year. Does anyone believe Kimmel’s show was profiting after paying him $16 million annually? There is no way. ABC was looking for an excuse to drop him. Now they can blame Brendan Carr and the FCC and the Trump Administration can take the blowback. If Kimmel was profitable Disney would have ignored Carr’s finger wagging. This gives Disney the easy way out. It gets the Left riled up and it is one less loss on the income statement. A win-win for ABC.
I agree RG. His show should have been cancelled 3-4 years ago for lack of viewership. He was left on in spite of few viewers likely to serve an agenda. However the timing of this is terrible in that it sets a BAD precedent in that it looks like it is giving in to the Orange wannabe despot’s threats.

I agree the timing is bad. Trump and Company is out for revenge. That is obvious. I can see both sides. Trump is idolizing Francisco Franco. Can I understand Trump being pissed at the Left? Yes. They were brutal to him during his First Presidency. Of course, some of this was impacted by Trump’s own behavior, but the two impeachments, the dogging from the media, the court trials…all a sham. I don’t believe I could “befriend” those that caused my reputation, sanity, and pocketbook harm. I can’t blame Trump for going after them.
On the other hand, I can understand and am seriously concerned about the overreach of power when it comes to the First Amendment, the Fourth Amendment, the Sixth Amendment, and the Tenth Amendment. By seeking retribution they literally have shredded the Constitution and any and all rights that we have as Americans. I would like to believe Trump’s revenge stops at those that did him harm, but those in power never have a stopping point so it will be felt by all of us.
I understand that he was wronged by certain parties his first term but if he wanted to pursue vengence against them he should have never ran for president again. This unhinged behavior is disturbing at best, and potentially dangerous as hell.
Unlike many commentators here I have never been a part of nor had much sympathy towards the conservative movement. I remember too well the Bush years for all the crap I took from “conservatives” for my opposition to the PATRIOT Act and the Iraq War. The last few months have proven the are every bit as much the deranged authoritarians as any lefty. Yet the preen around pretending that they are so based and righteous. I do not have cable television and so I rarely watch anything. But when I do, it is mind numbing viewing the programming that is being sent out over the airwaves (no pun intended). From only interracial couples existing, to treating the while male as stupid, weak, and ineffectual, and on-and-on it went. I could not get through one commercial set (between television programs) without having some kind of DEI being shoved in my face. I am glad i do not have cable because I would hate to have to pay to see ad nauseum.

As we all know TV has gotten so bad as to be unwatchable. I used to watch Doctor Who and even 10 years ago it was going woke and I stopped watching it.
I can enthusiastically recommend Season 1 Episode 21 of Star Trek: The Original Series another good series was Banacek about a a Polish-American freelance, Boston-based, private investigator who solves seemingly impossible thefts. Heck even Hogan’s Heroes is better than the new crap.
Or just find a good book on Project Gutenberg, free and it won’t drive you nuts. Good luck on your search for quality entertainment.
