Why New Windshields Cost So Much

  1. Have a small crack in my windshield. Thankfully it hasn’t gotten longer since it cracked in 2023, due to a rock strike from a not well maintained government road. It’s pretty low so out of sight for heroes looking to write a ticket. So it will stay that way unless it gets much worse. Haven’t even bothered with finding out what it will cost to replace, since I have no plans to fix it at this point.

    • My 2007 Chevy Cobalt took a “TINK” on the windshield …..and it never spread elsewhere…
plus being in FL (instead of a virtue signaling kumbaya state…viz Southern New England)

      No hassle!

  2. we just had to do a ford transit van windshield, and they are big, and has at least one sensor.
$560 cash. Better than I thought.

  3. Wow, thanks for the opening to “windshields” ep.

    Kool travel story follows….
While in S Island NZ..(98)..they actually had car insurance commercials (another of your favorite subjects) about windshield damage ….caused by… Keas!..The world’s only alpine parrot.

The Falcon sized bird has a very “cheeky” personality….(the little shits are VERY INQUISITIVE)!

..they act exactly like the little green “compeys” on the original Jurassic Park movie…
i.e. you shoo them away….and…then they come closer to you!
Franz Josef glacier actually has signs warning of vehicle damage from the birds…

They love stripping out windshield …lining/rubber and compromising the seal…No Shit!
They were all over the place while doing The Milford Track…a
3 day Tramp over the Southern Alps.

On day 2 we stayed at basic Mintoro hut at the summit of MacKinnon pass and the area was INFESTED with the suckers..They will immediately go after your backpack if unattended.

And quite frankly ….I would substitute the word sinister …in place of “cheeky” for the little bastards and they possess a very serious beak!

  4. Eric , your timing for this article is impeccable. My gubmint safety inspection is due at the end of June and sensor filled windshield is cracked( from navigating a washed out road about a year ago just the chassis articulating caused the crack) If it is going to cost 2 or 3 grand to the insurance mafia and five hundred dollar to myself I will be risking the 183.00 dollar non compliance fine. There is no place to hide or go to from the insurance racket.

  5. While windshields are more finicky, they’re also thinner. Thinner to save weight ‘cos you gotta get it from somewhere. So that stone that might just leave a little divot now causes a crack. A crack that grows because the windshield has to be adhered so tightly to the frame as to not have any give, because of it being part of the airbag “system.” And all that engineering costs money too.

  6. The joy of ADAS. A cheaply made windshield that looks OK to the driver may give a distorted view to the camera and won’t work properly.

Whether you are changing the windshield or replacing the bumper it will need to be calibrated and apparently aside from any equipment needs the bay has to be double sized because the sensor and camera calibration needs extra space.

Luckily none of my cars have any of this high tech crap on them.
