Here’s today’s Clover. Yesterday’s actually- because that’s when I rolled up behind this one doing just over 40 MPH on a road with a 55 MPH speed limit that most non-Clovers drive at least 60-65 on (because the speed limit on this road, like on most roads, is posted 5-10 MPH below normal travel speeds).
An aspect of Cloverism that baffles me is the stupid wastefulness of it. Most of today’s. boring little crossovers with four cylinder engines have more power and are quicker (and faster) than most of the V8-powered barges of the mid-late ’70s yet these Clovers drive them as if they had the power/performance of a mid-late ’80s Chrysler K-Car.
But I think may know why.

You would lose your mind here in WA state. I made the trip from east over the pass westbound to south King County yesterday. A nightmare of half done roadwork, clovers, semi trucks, lane closures for active freeway repairs. In the half done and we’re not coming back till next spring road work, lumpy narrow lanes but you can still manage 65 in the 55 zones. Sure enough had to pass a left lane camper on the right with his horn blaring as I went by. Quoting Bugs, “what a maroon”.
Return trip went better, 75-80 all the way home there were three / four of us in a loose formation, Smokie pulled out behind us on one stretch but he bailed at the next exit apparently a sane one not bothered by fast but well behaved drivers.
Ha ha ha….and I could hear Bug’s Bunny say just such a quote, too! Sadly, the left lane luggers are numerous up here, as well. The attitude is “well, I am going the speed limit, and I still have every right to camp here”, even if they are not passing anyone. Meanwhile, if you are lucky, everyone is passing on the right where you can flash them a dirty look or the bird. I sometimes think “Condition White” is the norm for many of these drivers.
Maybe they are carrying a large piece of granite in the back and the additional weight is costing them speed? Just trying to help. 😉
I think there’s another aspect of this as well, Hollywood.
In my experience teaching teen drivers advanced techniques, they almost universally are afraid of flipping the car or going wildly out of control, crash and explode into a ball of flames. Where do they get such ideas?
Hollywood.
Watch any teevee show or movie and you’ll see the most ridiculous things happening on the road.
Add to this the constant drumbeat of fear mongering from all media outlets and you have generations of people who’ve been conditioned to wet their pants at the slightest provocation.
It’s the perfect environment to raise Clovers.
