Annoying things – stupid things – are often acronym-ized. A fine example of this being automatic stop-start (ASS) “technology.” Another – the latest example – is EREV. Can you guess what this acronym refers to?
Extended Range Electric Vehicle.
It is perhaps the most stupid thing to come down the pike since ASS, because ASS is merely annoying, like a mosquito that buzzes around your face while you’re trying to enjoy the day outside.
But what is an Extended Range Electric Vehicle? It is a stupid – clumsy – effort to fix not so much the range issue that besets most EVs but rather the extended recharge time most people aren’t willing to deal with. It is time-wastage more than anything else that has caused the EV tide – seemingly inexorable just three years ago – to recede. There are and have always been regular vehicles that have modest driving ranges. For example, the Mazda Miata’s “city” driving range is only 309 miles. Many EVs boast more driving range. But the Miata’s gas tank can be fully refueled in about the time it took to read this paragraph – because that’s about how long it takes to pump 12 gallons of gas into the Miata’s tank.
Mazda has had not difficulty persuading people to buy Miatas. A V8-powered Dodge Charger Hellcat’s range is even less – yet people drool over these cars.
An EV that has say a 400 mile range can be driven farther (perhaps, assuming it is not too cold or too hot out) before it needs to be recharged, but when it does need to be recharged, the wait will be exponentially longer; at least half an hour if not a full hour (or more) to get a full charge. The italics are deployed to point out one of the many oily dissemblings about EVs that have soured people on these devices; i.e., that while it is true it is possible to recover a partial charge in say ten minutes at some “fast” chargers, it is not possible to get a full charge in that amount of time (or anything close to that amount of time) because these “fast” chargers revert to slow charging once the battery reaches about 80 percent capacity, as a precautionary measure. To reduce the risk of a conflagration – a fire – and to reduce the stress imparted to the battery by “fast” charging it with high voltage electricity.
And even the 10 minute partial charge is a colossal waste of time when you could be fully fueled in less than half that time. Most people haven’t got the time to waste – and this is doing to EV sales what a bulb of garlic does to Dracula.
Enter the EREV.
It is still an EV – but it “solves” the recharge time-waste problem by carrying around its own portable generator; that is to say, a gas-burning engine. This engine doesn’t even partially propel the vehicle (as in a hybrid vehicle, which uses a battery pack and electric motors to provide supplementary propulsion). It simply runs to generate electricity to feed the battery pack that sends electricity to the motors that propel the vehicle. It amounts to something like bolting a helicopter to the back of a Cessna so as to keep the plane in the air.
Some might ask: Why not just skip the helicopter and fly the Cessna – by itself?
This is not the right question to ask. The EREV answers the question – of compliance.
And – yes – the pressure to comply with federal fuel economy (CAFE) and carbon dioxide “emissions” regulations still very much exists. Trump hasn’t rescinded or eliminated these regulations; all he has done is dial them back some. Instead of having to achieve compliance with a “fleet average” of 50 MPG, car companies will only have to achieve compliance with a 35 MPG “fleet average.” The same standard that was in force toward the end of Trump’s first term, back in 2020. The 35 MPG standard is why the 2.0 liter turbocharged four has become the nearly Universal Engine in every vehicle and it is why six cylinder engines are no longer even available in cars that used to commonly offer them, such as the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord.
It is why turbocharged/hybrid-augmented six cylinder engines have largely replaced the V8s that used to be common in big SUVs and full-sized trucks and full-size luxury sedans.
And it is why there was so much malinvestment in EVs. These haven’t been selling, but that hardly matters. It is the manufacturing of them that helps achieve compliance. Each EV that is made counts toward a car company’s overall “fleet average” CAFE compliance score and helps make smaller its “carbon footprint.” Whether they sell is another problem. But it is not a compliance problem. 
The EREV is the solution to that problem – or so the car companies hope. They figure that maybe people who would not buy an electric Lightning or Ram pick-up might buy one if they didn’t have to wait constantly for a recharge. Ergo, they have decided to install an engine in these EVs to generate the electricity they need to power their electric drivetrains. Et voila!
The EREV.
Like ASS, it is a solution to a problem created by the government that we all get to pay for – even if we don’t buy an EREV or an ASS-equipped vehicle – because these things impose general costs on all of us, including the cost of no longer wanting any part of anything new they’re making and trying to make us accept.
And pay for.

The 50 to 35 cafe average will probably help Dodge/Ram a lot in reducing the big fines they used to pay to sell the hemi in Dodge’s and Ram’s. They will likely be doing just that very soon, just to stay alive.
If only there was some way of capturing the energy generated by Henry Ford spinning in his grave over what has happened to the auto industry and we would be home free.
It occurs to me that the 49 Ford F-1 I’m working on right now is a EREV. If you stick the 4 speed in low gear and mash the starter button it will move, at least enough to get off railroad tracks or out of an intersection. Then once that move is done that 239 flathead V8 can crank up and recharge the battery.
Yeah, I’m being snarky, but the whole situation cries out to be drowned in a pit of snark.
And the whole handy sized half ton weighs about 3000 lbs, has already lasted 76 years, and continues to be useful. Plus working on a flathead soothes the soul in a way that modern mechanical abortions simply cannot.
The newest ‘brag’ about EVs is that there is now a new ‘solid-state’ battery that can recharge to ‘full power’ in 9 minutes and is 1/4th the size of the lithium ion battery pack. Of course, there is no mention of the power required to do so in the advert for this ‘new tech’. The figure for such a feat would be 1.3 megawatts, per vehicle, at a cost not even hinted at.
Imagine being charged more for your gasoline or diesel fuel just to have it flow faster into your fuel tank! If you want it at an affordable rate, you will have to take 12 hours to fill up!
This EV garbage has only ONE purpose, to effective eliminate freedom of travel for the masses.

The whole EV push is dishonest – arguably, evil – for the reason you mention. They want to eliminate freedom of travel. EVs are the vehicle to do just that.
PS: I almost have the tranny out of the TA. Just need to remove the last three bellhousing bolts and lower it out. I started to do that yesterday, but my right forearm kept cramping up and so I bagged it. I really want to get ‘er done today because the weather’s about to get pig bitin’ cold (as Ed Anger used to say in his Weekly World News column)!

Not yet! I’m having to do this piecemeal and slowly. I can’t afford the T-10 just yet. I’m getting ready to order the manual flywheel, though! I’m hoping to be able to buy the clutch/pressure plate/bellhousing sometime before spring and then it’s just the big lift – the T10! With any luck, I’ll have it driving again by the summer!

Even if the magic battery were to appear tomorrow there’s no way in hell that the grid could support that level of load. Especially now with all the Big Brother “data centers” popping up everywhere we’ll be lucky to have enough power available for a couple of light bulbs.

The philosustainable greenies will want that power to come from a solar farm, naturally. That would require about 10 acres. Say, a million dollars for the all the solar panels and stuff, plus the land acquisition cost. Per single-vehicle charging station. And you can charge only during the daytime. On sunny days.

The pumps at the gas station I use deliver about 9 gallons per minute. For my truck, that works out to 180 miles per minute. I can pay with a credit card or cash — no ‘app’ required for my nonexistent stupid smart phone. And of the 16 pumps, only rarely is one of them out of service. And even when the place is pretty busy, the wait for an available pump is never longer than a few minutes. And there are several other gas stations nearby. And…

It’s the toast of the C-suite, comrades! EREV Fever is the latest TikTok dance craze among auto execs. They pivot from one fool thing to another every four years, syncing with the US presidential cycle and their own internal development schedule.
Four years ago, towing a diesel generator behind a Tesla to extend its range was an in-joke, a gearhead internet meme. But lunkhead auto execs clapped their forehead with their hairy, fat-fingered paw and exclaimed, ‘Sha-ZAY-um!! Why didn’t I think of that?? DOH!!’
Guess what problem is exacerbated by an auxiliary engine? That’s right — weight. Already, EeeVees are pork-ass shoats with their 1,000 and 2,000-lb baaaaatteries. Now add another 600 lbs for a little engine out back and what do you get? Oversteer! /sarc. No, really: morbid obesity.
Reading about how cheap EeeVees are taking over the gov-managed Chinese market, lunkhead Lightning Jim Farley is still obsessed with building a sub-$30,000 EeeVee [now quietly bumped to $35,000]. In the meantime, EREVs serve as a belt-and-suspenders transition technology for fearful customers, unwilling to take the bold plunge into all-electric, all the time. So ‘Zheem’ imagines.
The auto industry lost me over a decade ago, with its telematics and douchescreens and 10-speed transmissions that nobody asked for. EREVs are a tertiary step into madness, something like fitting a pea-brained brachiosaurus with a math coprocessor chip. It doesn’t occur to them that you really don’t want a smarter dinosaur, munching your trees to nubs, then starting in on the deck. 🙁
And that auxiliary engine requires a gas tank, which will make fighting a battery-induced EV fire even more interesting.

The Devil’s Advocate argument is that by running an ICE as a generator, not to drive the wheels, it can always produce optimal power. Same argument as a CVT, even though they manufacturers introduced step-shifting to make a CVT feel like a traditional transmission.
I wonder if they’ll make the genset “rev” like a Hemi to recreate the feel of an engine driven vehicle?
Maintenance of the ICE should be a breeze — just mosey over to Harbor Freight and pick up another $149 lawn mower engine every couple of years. Four bolts and a hose clamp, and you’re back on the road again.
Two smokes are good for the environment as long as they don’t directly drive the wheels!
The model being the diesel-electric locomotive. They have dialed in the best way to use diesel fuel to move a lot of cargo. Electric drive in this case is a major advantage in getting the most torque out of the least space and weight.
This is the concept for the trucks Edison Motors is building. And it may prove feasible in their intended market of logging trucks.

In that case it should work out to be an economic advantage. Defined range, climbing unloaded, descending loaded with lots of regen braking.
Whether it would scale down from double trailer Class 8 logging trucks to other commercial trucks. It may very well work out for the cargo truck industry. When you’re doing 50,000 miles a year a 5% efficiency improvement is significant operating improvement. It would be a heck of a lot better than an all electric tractor and less complex than a hybrid.
It’s probably not useful for light duty trucks or passenger cars. It could work for vehicles that do a lot of stop-and-go and idling, like a commuter. The improvement to anything that runs with cruise control on the highways will be in the noise.
That’s before you calculate the price and cost of ownership, which in a honest assessment would destroy any practical improvement. They will very likely save a lot of fuel on those logging trucks, that’s not a huge jump from railroad locomotives in application.

I’m glad you used the ‘M’ word, malinvestment, because that’s what it is. I distinctly remember 2008 when the ‘big 3’ were in financial trouble. The malinvestment was huge but not even close to today. Ford will regret burning through $35 billion dollars. Somehow, Farley still has the job.
I do anticipate another bull market in oil and gas sending prices skyrocketing compared to now. Vehicles with good fuel economy will make more sense in this situation.
