A gallon of regular unleaded is now about $4.20 (up about 7 cents during the past 24 hours) in most parts of the country. Just four months ago – in December of 2025 – it was about $2.81 in most parts of the country. Then came this stupid, evil war Trump decided to start with Iran and now – four months later – Americans are spending about $1.40 more per gallon.
That means the average (15 gallon) tankful costs abut $21 more today than it did four months ago. Since most people fill up once a week (at least) that means the war is costing them about $100 each month that would otherwise have been available to spend on others things. If the price stays where it is, they’ll have $1,200 less to spend on other things over the course of the next year, courtesy of Trump and every other cretin responsible for triggering and enabling this stupid, evil war. 
It is probably accurate to say that had most of the people who voted for Trump known in advance that they’d be hit with a $1,200 tax increase if Trump became president, they would have stayed home on election day. Many of these Trump voters probably drive trucks and SUVs that have tanks that hold more than 15 gallons of gas, too – and burn through it a lot faster. A full-size pick-up typically has a 23-24 gallon tank. Filling that tank now costs about $32 more than it did before Trump decided to do the opposite of what he repeatedly said he thought was stupid while campaigning for president; i.e., start another war in the quicksandbox of the Middle East.
That’s about $130 more every month – assuming just one fill-up a week. Many of the people who drive trucks use them for work; what do you suppose they’re charging for work now – as opposed to four months ago?
Have you priced shingles lately? If you need a new roof, you’re probably going to need a second mortgage to pay for it.
Trump emitted another of his obvious lies that the Iranians “informed us that they are in a State of Collapse.” The Iranians just changed their pants – after pissing themselves laughing about this. Is there anyone – even a Red Hat – who believes the Iranians are in a “state of collapse”? And even if they were, that they would “inform” Trump of this, so he could bellow braggadociously about it?
It is not going to get better. Consider that what we are paying for gas has very little to do any actual/physical shortage. As Trump himself loves to remind us, America is (or was close to being) a “net exporter” of oil. Excepting California, of course – which is bigly dependent on foreign imports due to its stifling of its own in-house capability to extract and refine the oil it has. That is why a gallon of gas in California is currently just shy of $6 (diesel is closing in on $8 per gallon). People who live in other states will be paying the cost of that soon, too – at the store. All the stuff that comes from California has to be shipped – trucked – out of California. Big rigs generally carry 200-300 gallons of diesel.
Times that by eight and you’ll understand why going to the Dollar Store is beginning to feel like an evening out at Taco Bell as depicted in the Stallone sci-fi move, Demolition Man. That is to say, both low rent and exotic at the same time. A “treat” for those who can still afford it.
The economic backwash of this stupid, evil war is just beginning to roll in. The Iranians are in the driver’s seat, not Trump. Everyone knows this – most of all the Iranians. They are not – per Trump – “Low IQ” people, though actually low IQ people often think of them as such. They have Trump – the United States – over a barrel, literally as well as figuratively. Why would they agree to anything that is in Trump’s interest when his interests clash with theirs? Trump suffers from the defect that afflicts many actually Low IQ people, which is his low opinion of the intelligence of other people, whom he sees as not as smart as himself. Problems arise when what such a person sees is very much at odds with what is.
A smart person would stop talking like a Low IQ person – for openers. A really smart person might admit he made a mistake and now it’s time to cut bait, take the loss and refocus on making America great again. What do you suppose would be the effect on Trump’s currently catastrophic approval ratings if he were to basically declare “mission accomplished,” pull the carriers and all the rest back from there and (quietly) tell “Netanyahu” that his Greater Israel project is not congruent with America’s interests and that if he continues to pursue it, the funding spigot will be turned off? If he did, that godawful Lee Greenwood anthem might not sound as bad as it is.
He could agree to the Iranians’ reasonable terms and get the oil flowing again and stave off the worst, which is on deck for fall if this situation does not resolve very soon – due to the effect on global food production arising from sky-high fertilizer costs. Some people who know this stuff in depth warn that if something isn’t done to remedy the situation soon, there could be serious shortages – not just high prices.
This war is bigly unpopular. Americans don’t like paying for it. There is going to be cost that goes beyond what people are paying at the pump if the war – the chaos it has created – isn’t ended.
The upside – for Trump – is that by ending it and getting back to the America First agenda he teased us into believing actually was his agenda – he could be popular again. But he doesn’t seem to care about that anymore, having succeeded in getting elected and now he longer has to pretend to be America First.
So he doesn’t. Americans have seen who he really is – as opposed to what he got them to believe he is.
As I type this, oil is over $112 per barrel. That may seem “cheap” in the coming days/weeks.

I don’t know if I can blame the War Tax for the price of steel roofing going up but I was told it was going up ten to fifteen percent in May. Luckily I ordered the new panels early so I’m good there at least. Also burning the end cuts from framing the shed saves on the heating bill. 🙂

If you’re redoing the roof, use architectural shingles. They literally have a 50 year warranty, and actually last that long. Mine are at 25 years and look great. It added only another $500 for the purchase price of the whole job.

I remember a time long long ago, I was at the south rim sitting near the edge, soaking in the sublimity of an early morning sunrise when a bus load of Japanese, (could have been Chinese), showed up and started shuffling by, harshing my zen. Then I saw one throw a candy wrapper over the edge, like it was it was nothing more than a giant landfill. Took every ounce of intention I could muster to not let berserker mode kick in. So yeah, I have no problem with putting a high $$$ bar on foreigners using our National Parks.

Sister got married @ South Rim in 1970s. She & Dan spent their honeymoon @ lodge on North Rim which recently burned to the ground. Leslie has faith it will be rebuilt.
Park Service told me it was not possible to hike to river & back in one day, that I needed to overnight @ Phantom Ranch, which required advance reservations.
I said, “Eff it,” took off down Bright Angel in early AM, passed up the mule train @ Indian Gardens, & made the river about noon. Drank some water @ Phantom Ranch, crossed the iron bridge, & made it out South Kaibab about 5 PM.
Did it without food or carried water, just to prove a point. Never did rim to rim, but Leslie & Dan did that in one day, as did one other person (female) of my acquaintance.
If I tried it today, @ age 76, I would likely die on the trail. Not a bad way to go, IMO.
Thats quite an accomplishment going down and back in a single day. Not many people can say that. And, definitely not a bad way to go.
Cant think of many better ways to die than going off deep into the wilderness and not returning. Tbh Shadow I wasn’t overly impressed with Denali. Have seen many such awe inspiring places in Az, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, and even yes, even California. Denali didn’t impress me any more than those other places.
Your truly priceless treasure in Alaska imo is Portage glacier on Whiter lake, and Mendenhall glacier field. Hiking to the base of the falls one day, then Helicoptering up onto Lemon glacier the next day, truly took my breath away.

If your son lands in Fairbanks, just remind him that the cost of living is high (fuel & electricity), it is colder in “The Interior” (as it is called) than in the Anchorage/ Mat Su area. In Anchorage, there are more places to drive, where you can see more. I think the drivers in Anchorage are absolutely horrid, but they at least know where their gas pedals are when they are merging with traffic. Fairbanks still has not figured that out, let alone syncronized traffic lights. There is more to do in Anchorage than Fairbanks. However, one year Anchorage got all of Fairbanks’ snow, and then last year (?), they had none, and the dog mushing race had to be rerouted. So, there are positives and negatives for both towns. One thing that is the same: The Auroras are amazing during the long, dark, Winter months, and if there is a solar storm, bring a camera (ha ha)! You might freeze your arse at -40 below, but the skies will be spectacular!

I always dress in layers, and it works fine. I have been out at bone chilling, -60 below (did not realize it at the time, thought it was “only” around -45 below (ha ha). The dangerous is the over dressing, and then sweating like a dog in frigid temperatures. The auroras were fantastic at those temps, though. A bit of hot chocolate does one wonders, as well.

I remember the first time I came across that word – special. It was reading Phillip Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Brilliant book. Anyhow, it depicts a dystopian future in the ruinous aftermath of a nuclear war. The planet has been contaminated by radioactive fallout and this eventually results in specials – people who are deteriorating, mentally. There are varying degrees of specialness, too. The first being a Chickenhead. A Chickenhead eventually deteriorates into an Anthead.
Such forthright terminology is, of course, not allowed to be used today. We are supposed to pretend the retarded are “exceptional.” And, of course, special.
