ABC News reports that Michael Knight’s ’82 Pontiac Trans Am – the Knight Industries 2000 (KITT) – was “speeding” (36 MPH in a 25 MPH zone) and its current owner, the Volo Car Museum, was sent a ticket. That is, a demand for money – which is what a “ticket” is. These “tickets” are used to extract hundreds of millions of dollars annually from motorists who’ve caused no harm to anyone. It is am interestingly Talmudic concept when you stop to think about it.
The Talmud being a pedantic litany of laws that must be obeyed because they are laws. It is claimed these laws are God’s laws whereas secular laws such as those prohibiting driving faster than an arbitrarily decreed speed are the government’s laws – but it is a distinction without much difference in that the government demands the same sort of obedience that God does. Whether any harm has been caused is irrelevant and certainly no defense. All that matters – as regards your “guilt” – is whether you were in fact driving faster than the arbitrarily posted speed limit.
And even if you weren’t driving at all, apparently.
KITT – the star of the TV show, Knight Rider – is parked in a museum. Yet KITT’s current owner – the Volo Car Musuem – got a piece of payin’ paper from the city of New York. More precisely, from the operator of the automated speed camera that claims it caught KITT doing 36 in a 25. The proof? The “KITT” vanity license plate attached to someone els’s black Trans-Am. The speed camera – which is tied in with various corporate-government databases – identified the “speeding” Trans Am as the one parked in the Volo Car Museum.
Now there are a number of interesting things about this ticket – aside from the obvious thing that KITT (the actual KITT) is innocent. The first thing being it doesn’t matter. It is up to Volo to prove their displayed KITT wasn’t the “KITT” caught “speeding” by the speed camera. Sentence first! Verdict After! That was the cry of the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland and Americans now live in Wonderland; i.e., they live in a country where their innocence is almost an irrelevance – both morally and legally. They are regularly required to prove they are innocent, as opposed to the government having to prove they are guilty.
These automated speed camera tickets are far from an aberration. They are an elaboration – of the principle that it is the burden of the innocent to prove they are not guilty.
Two examples will suffice to make the point.
First, so-called “sobriety” checkpoints – where innocent people who’ve given no reason to suspect they are guilty of anything are stopped by government enforcers and required to prove they are not “drunk” to the satisfaction of a government enforcer. Merely refusing to play along with their own presumptive guilt is sufficient to trigger an arrest – and conviction – for not playing along. Irrespective of any evidence that establishes the refusenik was “drunk” and even if the evidence proves the refusenik wasn’t “drunk.” It is its own, separate “offense” to decline to play along with those who used to have the burden of proof that you had done something illegal. It now being illegal to decline to furnish proof of your innocence (or guilt). 
Second, what is styled “civil asset forfeiture.” This is a bland-sounding term for if we want your money, we’ll take you’re money (say it like the rapist redneck in Deliverance). It is considered “suspicious” – by the government – for any of us to be found in possession of “excessive” cash. How much is “excessive”? Whatever the government says is “excessive.” It can be the $20,000 you have in an envelope that you hoped to use to buy a used vehicle with when you got pulled over for a “speeding” ticket – or it could be $200. In theory, i could be $20. It is entirely up to the government to say how much cash is “excessive” – and once that is decided, your money is presumed guilty of being “illicit” and it is then taken from you – and it is then up to you to prove it is not illicit. To the satisfaction of the government that took it and says it is.
Back to the speed cameras – and the “Notice of Liability/Certificate sent to the actual KITT’s owners. Not the Talmudic language. It is a “certificate” and Volo is “liable” – implying Volo is presumptively guilty. Stand – and deliver! (This is what flintlock-wielding highway robbers said back in the day).
The difference – one of them – being that people back in the day were understood to have the right to fight back. Today, you don’t even have the right to be presumed innocent. The camera says you were “speeding” and you are presumed guilty. You may perhaps be allowed to send in an appeal/explanation in the faint hope that perhaps the anonymous government drone who reads it (this assumes it is read) will be swayed by it to void the ticket. Some municipalities go full Orwell on this dirty business and demand to know who it was – if it wasn’t you.

Consider the evil of this. In order to prove one’s innocence, the government requires the accused to finger someone else as guilty.
There is a way out of this. Several actually. The first is the instinctive one. Smash these machines. But it is the second and more fundamental way that would truly remedy this evil. That would be to do away with legalism – Talmudism – and hold people who cause harm responsible but leave everyone else alone. The practical/everyday way to implement this would be to return to the idea that in the absence of a victim there can be no such thing as a crime.
And that it is a crime to punish people for “offenses” that involve no victim.

So, given that a traffic citation is a CIVIL offense, and therefore a lawsuit, as is seizure of cash or property without a warrant, and often without associated criminal charges, wouldn’t the traffic citations have to be limited to $20? As well as, the cops couldn’t seize more than $20 without the owner having a RIGHT to a jury trial to reclaim it! Yes, I know, twenty bucks went a LOT further in 1791, but I don’t see that the text of 7A was changed to reflect Uncle Sam playing with “Monopoly Money”!
I would say to ask for a court date or ignore it.
When police pull you over, a person identifies you as going obviously faster than traffic, then use radar that is tuned that day or after the last stop, in order to get an instrumental read on the speed. There is also the laser, more common on highways since a good distance is needed to use. Or the squad car paces you and they have certified speedometers. Then you get a court date where you can challenge if you were the one seen or when, or if the radar was tuned before the stop, or if it was raining or misting at the time. Assuming the officer shows up at all, it may be dropped for that.
A speed camera is not tuned every day, you can probably get off by pointing that out in court.

Second — and here is where we have to delve deeper into the Talmudic parsing thing — if you get a camera ticket, YOU are not accused of anything. It is not considered a violation or a crime. It is a CIVIL penalty. So the presumption of innocence and the right of due process does not apply.
If you fail to pay the ticket from the camera, the registration in your name granting you the PRIVILEGE to drive said vehicle on the street will be suspended… but YOU will not be charged with anything.

Fail to pay your traffic citations, which typically default to a conviction and imposition of the “bail”, or fine, and see how long it remains a “Civil” matter. The excuse to jail you until you pay them is that you’re in contempt of (traffic) Court.
The thing is that car in Volo Museum is not registered in California. It’s probably not even registered in Illinois. It’s certainly not registered with that KNIGHT plate. Some person manually decided to send that ticket to the Volo Museum.
Never mind there are dozens of KITT replica cars and the remaining screen used cars that are shown around the country and around the world with a California KNIGHT plate. Someone manually chose to send the ticket to the Volo Museum. There are people who do drive their replicas with their own states’ KNIGHT vanity plates. None of them got the ticket, the automated system would have chosen a properly registered vehicle first.
I doubt NY is using an AI system that searches the internet for photos of cars with the plate. That would be a possible way to send the ticket to a museum car. Photos online with a contact address. But that’s a doubtful path at this point. It’s a very expensive way to track down an owner for a vanishingly small minority of tickets. It’s not worth the money.
Someone in government or its contractor is paid to find ‘owners’ for ticketed cars the system doesn’t have listed. So that’s what was done. Pay up or else!

It’s a great example of crony capitalism, they’re owned/operated/maintained by a private company so might not be legally enforceable if challenged it in court. I got one of those tickets from Oregon, for going 34 in a 25. This was on Highway 99, the main N-S road in Oregon (outside of the freeway), it was a setup, they placed an incospicuous 25 sign on a this highway where it is 35, 45, 55.

I had to make a plea also. In order to avoid going to court, (which is another huge waste of time and money), I made a guilty plea so they would accept my check for payment.

In California (maybe other jurisdictions as well), the legal fiction is that the amount demanded by the “traffic ticket” is “bail”, which supposedly guarantees your appearance in “court”. If you fail to appear in court, your bail is forfeit, and the “court” is free to “have its way” with you (deliberate choice of words).
I have known someone to “fight the ticket” by insisting on a change of venue from Riverside CA to Blythe CA (same county – check the map) and subpoening the traffic officer who wrote the ticket to appear in court on his day off.
The “accused offender” had, of course, planned to tow his ski boat to the Colorado River about that time anyway, so it was perfectly convenient for him.

Nowhere on that letter the “Knight Rider” received from “NYC” is an actual law code. If a police officer writes you a ticket, he’s supposed to write the numerical code of the law you allegedly broke. That’s what makes it legal. A private company operating on behalf of a municipal government can’t issue you a legal ticket for speeding, and if they don’t write the law number on the “ticket” they send you in the mail, it isn’t legally enforceable. Just crumple it up and throw it away.

In this case, the Chinese police actions are at least more upfront and honest than American police in that they were extorting drivers at check points and the taxi driver had enough. Our police live in the pretend world that they are the good guys *enforcing the law* all for the peoples good, while extorting people.
Years back the City of New Orleans was and still is famous for employing likely hundreds of these so traffic devices/speed cameras. It was taken all the way to either the Louisiana Supreme Court (maybe federal too I cannot recall) and it was justly found to be unconstitutional. There was some verbiage to the effect it had to be a human observing the “law infraction” and thusly had to be a human issuing the citation. Well, it was determined the rat hole ran and operated city was generating about 25-30 million dollars in revenue annually with these. They had to continue operating them just to fund their broke raggedy city. Facts!

For now we can all crowdsource location maps of where these things are. But the big growth area for small drones is in the “first responders” market. It started with search and rescue putting up drones to find missing hikers using infrared cameras. They could cover an entire mountain in an hour. But now the latest thing is to deploy drone docking stations all over the city. For now in “high crime” areas (or more likely, rich folks’ neighborhoods), but eventually the dream is to have millions of these little things all over. They’re getting waivers to fly in ways you and I will never be permitted, and cost taxpayers millions of dollars. But at least they’re cheaper than a few hours of JET-A in the Bell JetRanger. Then again, cheaper=more likely to be used.
So the workflow is like this: A 911 call comes in for a purse snatcher. Dispatch hands off the ticket to a drone “operator” (not a pilot) who points and clicks on a map. The drone flies off autonomously to the location, providing live video to the command center, who can then stream it to the boys in the squad car. They then begin hunting for the bad dude from the air and steer the ground forces to the perp. Bruce Wayne’s mom gets her purse back and we avoid decades of nerd arguments online.
But the thing is, there’s just not that much going on during daytime, at least regular street crime (looting Target doesn’t count of course), so bored cops will start looking for crimes to justify their new toys. What better way to make a quick buck than to set up roving speed cameras? “I’ll shoot ’em out of the sky!” No, you won’t even notice them. They’re small enough that above about 100 feet AGL or so unless you’re specifically looking where you know that it is, you probably won’t notice it. You’ll just get a ticket in the mail, with survey grade GPS location data and certified speed detection software, and it will be just enough to be annoying but not enough to make you want to fight it. Just pay the fine and get on with your life.
Until they start following you waiting for you to break the law. But that’s not going to happen, right?
The usual suspects will never be charged because it costs GovCo money, the usually law abiding will have the book thrown at them.

The scanner will see the electronic plate signature, regardless of how you modify characters. The officer never has to see your plate with his eyes. He never has to look up from his computer to know you are nearby.

Speedometers are important to drivers, just like airspeed indicators are important to pilots. 4 lane traffic needs a standard to keep all traffic approximately the same speed in order to avoid massive pile up accidents.
Speedometers and signs help us judge safe curve speeds as well.

Freedom is not a free-for-all concept. If there were no laws at all, then anybody could break into your house and do anything they wanted to you and your family. Do you want that? I don’t like some of the ways modern technology is violating the constitution either. But stretching the limits of freedom by being stupid just gives leftists and women in legislative positions more ammunition to take away more freedoms.
Freedom isn’t chaos. There can be spontaneous order when there’s anarchy, which happens when autonomous individuals cooperate voluntarily.
The root problem is such a world requires intelligence, humility and responsibility. These are things that people may have once had but throwing the yokes off now in a world of morons would lead to mayhem.
I figure it’s about swinging the needle back to liberty even if such an ideal world won’t and probably realistically will never exist.
Truth is there has never been a perfectly libertarian world. There have been pockets and small sort of successful experiments in it. Colonial America started with as a highly regimented theocracy and even by the time of the Revolution there was of course some humans who had no liberty even though the principles of the Articles of Confederation were pretty good. There was a period before the Constitution where it almost was right. Then it was the War of 1812, second attempts at a Bank of the United States, the War of Northern Aggression, which finally case the die to the point we’re at now.
So what? We at least try to push back, can’t we?
Rights, as endowed by God, exist a priori to GovCo. A manmade structure of morality cannot supersede such Rights. This whole “freedom isn’t free” rhetoric is just a defense of reverting to the “might makes right” argument.
Also, if you structure a society on the basis that most people are suicidal killers you will get the results you seek to avoid.

There are 2 facts which you ignore here, 1 is readily apparent, 1 will become apparent if “government” is done away with:
Fact 1: Despite laws being in place, there are still people that will break into your house, and proceed to rob, rape, and murder you and your family. This is so glaringly obvious as to make me question why you made the statement in the first place. It makes you seem laughable.
Fact 2: If “government” were abolished, there would still be the same group of evil people that will try some bulls**t with you and yours, and by nature the rest of the people that just wanted to live their lives before will be doing the same thing tomorrow. People aren’t just sitting there waiting for governments to fall before they do crimes. That’s moron-think.
The only difference between anarchy and people with government is the holder of the monopoly on violence. With governments, the monopoly of violence rests with the state. With anarchy, the monopoly of violence rests with the people.
Which leads to a single question: Who would you rather have the monopoly of violence? The state, or the people?

You’re absolutely correct. The police are crime historians. They come after the home invasion has occurred. Most of their time is spent hassling people who aren’t criminals but who can be hassled because the cop has spied them committing a “violation” – a thing very much not the same thing as a crime. These cops are very good at sitting by the side of the road catching “speeders.” Because it is easy to just sit there and wait for the radar gun to blip and then “pull over” the hapless “speeder” who hasn’t harmed anyone and is unlikely to “resist.”
Even with the best intentions, unless a cop is going to sit outside my house all day, he cannot prevent someone from trying to break in/rob/kill me. Only I can do that. The cop shows up after the fact to write up a report.

But if you do plug the “bad guy” trying to rob you and/or your loved ones at your home, they PRESUME to second guess you and scrutinize to a degree never demanded of Armed Government Workers.
Just have a clam digger or backhoe hander, 200 lbs. of quicklime, and ten sacks of quick-crete to bury those “vermin”.
On the plus side, it appears that the authority is no longer using overseas sweat shop labor to read the plate. Only OCR/AI could get it that wrong.

Also note that this is a *civil* infraction naming the owner of the car, not the vehicle. They can’t prove who was driving with this kind of ticket, necessary to issue the criminal citation.
Still, I wonder how the Geico Gecko, Flo, The Emu, and the rest of the capos in the insurance mafia will view the violation.

Isn’t it amazing how many episodes of the original Star Trek series nowadays seem prescient given the various things that have been going on or constructed over the past several years? Another episode would be the one where a computer was supposed to take over the Enterprise and replace the human crew, but during a war game with a fellow starship, the computer thought the Enterprise was in a REAL battle with an enemy ship and attacked the starship. IIRC the attack KILLED some of that starship’s crew. Sounds like the “Self driving” technology in Teslas that was supposed to replace a HUMAN driver, but I’ve heard NUMEROUS stories of the technology malfunctioning and KILLING innocent people. Or perhaps even the AI that’s supposed to replace humans at various jobs but AI has its own challenges and problems.

Elija Cook Jr., the lawyer in the video, has a very cool part opposite Patrick McNee in the “No Such Thing As A Vampire” segment of the Richard Curtis TV movie “Dead of Night” from 1977. Highly recommended if you ever get a chance to watch the flick.
Cook is one of those “I’ve seen him before” actors that had very nice careers but, never the stardom.

I see Cook at least a half dozen times a year on MeTV between his appearance on “Star Trek” and fan-favorite “Svengoolie” movies in annual rotation.
He’s in tonight’s “House of Svengoolie” movie, “Rosemary’s Baby”, and was in “House on Haunted Hill”, which ran just recently.

I got a speeding ticket from a traffic cam somewhere around Cleveland once. I can’t remember how fast it said I was going, 70 something in a 55 zone perhaps, who knows though it’s been a while. Came with a nice little photo of the back of my car, license plate clearly visible.
I did the right thing – I crumpled it up and tossed it in the trash. Forgot about it completely, and never heard anything about it again.

Not all states participate in “sharing” driver offenses, but most do under one rule or another. Ohio might put out a hit on you and your state won’t renew your license because of just about anything, from a hit and run to not turning in your old plates when you move to a new state. Happened to a friend when he moved out of Georgia. No explanation, just call Georgia and give them a case number.
