When people are hated, there’s usually a reason why. Here’s an example:
A few weeks ago, a dude named Clarence Coyl and a friend drove through an open gate at the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona. They were spotted by a Fish and Wildlife officer identified as P. Nielsen, who ordered them to leave. The pair did so. That was, apparently, not enough for P. Nielsen, who followed them for 20 minutes until Coyl pulled into a gas station to pump some gas into his truck. When he returned to his truck after getting some sodas inside the station, P. Nielsen was there. P. Nielsen demanded to see Coyl’s ID. An argument ensued. Coyl demanded to know why he was being ordered to hand over his ID. Apparently, it is a minor offense to drive through an open gate onto the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge and P. Nielsen was determined to impose justice upon the offender.
P. Nielsen – wearing shorts and mirrored sunglasses, which makes him look like he’s auditioning for The Village People – draws his Taser and you can see for yourself he’s itchin’ to use it. He does exactly that, after Coyl calls him an asshole. The high voltage Taser “deployment” lights Coyl on fire. Apparently, P. Nielsen was not “trained” that sparks and gasoline don’t mix well. Actually, P. Nielsen was “trained.” According to Fox News, it is against Department of Interior policy to use “electronic control devices” such as Tasers near flammable materials.
Coyl’s calling the Village People wanna-be an “asshole” served to override the training.
Sigh.
Once again we see a situation in which grossly disproportionate force – potentially lethal force – is used against a “civilian” for the crime of Failing to Respect Muh Authoritah. Coyl wasn’t trying to run away from P. Nielsen. He certainly wasn’t threatening the “safety” of P. Nielsen. It is quite possible than P. Nielsen way overstepped whatever authoritah he actually does have as a Fish and Wildlife officer, which sounds like he’s basically a park ranger. Coyl left the park – and so, presumably, the nimbus of P. Nielsen’s authoritah. Nonetheless, according to news reports, P, Nielsen was going to make sure Coyl respected his authoritah.
Will there be any consequences for P. Nielsen? Of course not. P. Nielsen is endowed with immunities and privileges that “civilians” do not enjoy. Never mind that the Village People aren’t the military and “officer” isn’t a rank.
P. Nielsen may get a few days of paid leave. One thing is for sure. P. Nielsen isn’t going to get arrested and sent to prison for a year or so, as he ought to be – because anyone else who did what he did would surely get some hard time for recklessly and sadistically doing what P. Nielsen did.
The ugly reality is that what P. Nielsen did wasn’t unusual – excepting the burning his victim part. Armed government workers have been trained to do this sort of thing. To regard anything less than cringing submission as “resisting” and a “threat.”
And they wonder why they’re hated.
