In New York the other day, Trump told his audience – which actually cheered – that it’s not a big deal at all and well worth it “for you to pay a tiny little bit more for your gasoline just remember, you’re doing. . . so that a very evil country cannot have . . . a country really cannot have . . . it’s the number one state sponsor of terror in the world . . . we don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon . . . remember that when you have to pay a little bit more you’re at $4, ok, I mean I’ll never apologize I did the right thing.”
It makes you miss (almost) that well-known scholar, former president George W. Bush.
It’s “not a big deal at all” . . . for Trump, who can easily afford not just the gasoline (say it with a snarky, purse-lipped intonation, as he did) and also a fleet of 250 Cadillac Escalade SUVs with huge V8s that guzzle oceans of gas, since you and I are paying for it. Most of us can’t afford the Escalade – even just one. As far as the gas, “a tiny little bit more” has so far added up to around $700 for the average American filling up his or her average four-cylinder-powered crossover appliance once a week. By year’s end, the average American will have had to spend more than $1,000 on gas. Pocket change for Trump. He is as clueless as Bush’s father (who was puzzled about the cost of a gallon of milk) but with the added element of imperial contempt.
Of course, Trump also thinks no cost is too high for Americans to pay on behalf of Israel and “Bibi” Netanyahu. The latter literally gave Trump (and before him, The Chimp) the talking points about Iran being the “number one state sponsor of terror in the world . . . we don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon,” which “Bibi” has been warning the Iranians are going to possess any day now since the early 1990s. It’s not just bullshit. It’s bullshit that’s dried white and crumbled into dust decades ago. Trump may actually believe it. More likely, he hopes you’ll believe it.
Iran is “a very evil country”? Says the man who ordered the bombing of a girl’s school. Says the man who has made this country an un-indicted co-conspirator in genocide? Says the man who started a major war against a country that didn’t start it? “We don’t want them to have a nuclear weapon.” Who’s “we,” chief? And how is that the tiny apartheid colony in the region is allowed to have as many nuclear weapons – plural – as it likes (with offensive capability inherent in having hundreds of them) but Iran isn’t allowed to have even one, as a deterrent?
It almost makes one want to say oy vey.
“Remember that when you have to pay a little bit more you’re at $4, ok.” No doubt the voters will remember it, come this November. Assuming Trump doesn’t decide to declare another “emergency” like the one he declared back in 2020 that led to years of us being hassled to wear “masks” and play Sickness Kabuki. The Red Hats have forgotten all about it. They fixate on Fauci, an evil bastard no doubt – that Trump could have fired but didn’t. Trump just appointed his successor – who is just as evil. The Red Hats – a dwindling cadre – refuse to believe their lyin’ eyes, preferring to listen to Trump’s lies and see truth within them, somehow.
Trump also says “We’re winning big with the Islamic Republic of Iran. No one has any idea how successful we are. You know who knows how well we’re doing? Iran?”
Fascinating.
Roy Cohn just looked up from Hell to smile at Trump, his onetime apprentice. We’re “winning big,” alright. Nothing says “winning” like losing, big. The trick is to not ever say you’re not winning, bigly. Cohn taught Trump to say this. It does have a shock and awe effect since most psychologically normal people expect other people to defer to facts. They are unprepared for the kind of brazen reality inversion Trump practices. It is something like blaming the dog for the fart everyone heard you cut. The man is either deranged or his contempt for his audience is so complete he believes he can fart right in their faces and tell them it smells good and they ought to thank him for it. Which they do. The trained seals in the audience cheered when Trump told them to be glad they are paying “a tiny bit more for your gasoline.” You really ought to go listen to him say this as it conveys the contempt.
He also says he may declare the Strait a “territory of the United States.” His defenders will say he is just “trolling.” They may be right, just not the way they think. He’s not mocking his critics. He’s mocking us all. Most especially, he’s mocking the saps who clap when he tells them they ought to be happy to pay “a little bit more for your gasoline.”
We can only sit back and hope that “the Iranians” don’t cause him to sleep with the fishes. If that were to happen, the Lee Greenwood song would be playing everywhere and (very soon) we’ll be paying a lot more than $4 per gallon.
