The good news is the cost of gas remains about the same. The bad news is, it remains about the same. About $4.40 per gallon, on average. That means everyone who buys gas is still paying a War Tax of about $25 on every 15 gallon fill-up. What will we be paying after the midterms – irrespective of the outcome?
If the blues douche the reds out of Congress – as seems likely four weeks ahead of the midterms, precisely because of the War Tax – then Trump will be unbound by any political exigencies, as he is right now. The war has settled into a quiet – for now – war, because it is an extremely unpopular war and there is an election coming up. Trump knows it – and more to the point, he knows it is not looking good for the reds. That is why is he is desperately trying to sell the war to people in flyover country – places such as Oklahoma and Nebraska, where there are still people who’ll cheer him when hunches over and barks gibberish at them. It is why he has dangled $5,000 checks in front of them. It is why he just issued a proclamation that truckers and farmers (but not the rest of us) will be able to buy (for now) “off-road” diesel – which costs a little less than on-road diesel, because “off road” diesel isn’t taxed. But it still costs more than $5 per gallon, so it’s not going to make much difference – because it’s the war and not taxes that have made diesel so expensive.
It is also why Trump has not pursued his promise – the one he intends to keep – about ending the Iranian civilization as punishment for their insolent refusal to lose the war he started.
He is waiting until after the midterms – at which point it will no longer matter whether the blues douche the reds out of Congress. And the same holds true – only worse – if the reds somehow manage to not get douched, because in that event, Trump will be able to (and will) claim a mandate for going deep in Iran.
He is going to go deep either way, probably, is the point.
Of course, he may need an excuse to go deep. He mentioned the form it might take just yesterday. The Iranians might “take out” a major American city, specifically Los Angeles or San Diego, CA. He says such an attack would be a “a small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe.” Of course, he means keep Israel safe. Which means keep Iran down. That is what this war has always been all about; the “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon” stuff is pabulum for children, some of whom are chronologically adults. Israel has hundreds of nuclear weapons – and the means to deliver them, via its submarines and missiles and aircraft. Iran has no such capabilities – but we’re supposed to believe that if the Iranians get one they are going to use it to “take out” LA or San Diego.
If such a thing happens, it’s a certain bet it will have been Israel that “took out” LA or San Diego – in order to pin the tail on the Iranian donkey. So that Trump can go deep against Iran, to the chords of the Lee Greenwood song echoing in the ears of the B52 and Stealth bomber pilots who drop American nukes on Iran.
Onward Christian soldiers!
You can image what gas and diesel will cost then. But – the good news! – Trump will have made sure Iran doesn’t have a nuclear weapon. It’ll all have been a “small price to pay for keeping the world safe, keeping our country safe.”
