Try to imagine a doctor counseling a man that the best way to avoid catching an STD is to wipe his member down prior to the act with a Blessed Cloth.
Ordering people to wear “masks” is worse, of course on account of the ordering. Stupid rituals are no more than that so long as they are voluntary. People ought to be free to practice their religion, however odd. Rabbis and others of the faith who ritualistically hump a wall aren’t hurting anyone else. Nor the old lady who fingers her rosary beads. It becomes a problem, on the other hand, when a strange ritual becomes official – and required. A problem, that is, for everything upon which the modern world is based.
That being reason and its operating mechanism, the empirical method; i.e., the gathering and evaluation of facts to determine what is likely true (and what is likely false). Everything relating to “COVID” amounted to am assault upon the empirical method and thus upon what is true in favor of what was false.
It was false that wearing a “mask” protected either the wearer or others from catching or spreading the coof. That this fact needs to be stated – again! – is a measure of just how much progress Medieval thinking (which was more like feeling) has gained ground. In Medieval times, many people believed it was true that witches lurked in the forest and that cats sucked the breath away from babies, killing them in their sleep. Fear of things unseen and not-understood was ubiquitous. It wasn’t until the Renaissance and the ascendence of reason that things changed; that light began to dissipate the long darkness.
The problem with reason, of course, is that it leads to thinking rather than feeling. Empiricism is observational; do we believe our lyin’ eyes or do we go by what we feel? People were told that they had to wear a “mask” to “stop the spread” but you could see – with your own eyes – that much of what was breathed in and out escaped the “mask.” Ergo (as in, therefore) the “mask” could not “stop the spread.” It wasn’t even necessary to know about electron microscopes and the size of viral particles. One of the most devastating you-can-see-for-yourself evidences was videos made of people exhaling smoke through a “mask.”

Reasonable people asked: If “masks” are so good at “stopping the spread,” why didn’t doctors recommend them before the coof? Why didn’t doctors wear them outside of surgical operating theaters?
And why do people who handle deadly viruses in labs wear pressurized moon suits with their own oxygen supply? Why not just wear a “mask” instead?
Rational people asked such questions. How come so many doctors didn’t? How come some still don’t? The state of medicine in Keeeeev must be pretty Medieval given they’re bringing back “mask” mandates.

I’ve noticed a slight but unsettling resurgence in “mask” wearing in my area (SW Virginia). Instead of the usual one – usually a fearful-looking old person – I now regularly see two or even three. No doubt they are hearing the “news” about the cases – the cases! – again. These people would welcome a return to Medievalism. They are not dissimilar from other members of radical sects who believe with invincible fanaticism in the irrational – in part because it makes them feel better but also because people of this mindset have a need to impose their beliefs on everyone else. To see that everyone is “of the faith.” The last time this type of mentality gained the ascendance, we came just this close to the modern-era equivalent of burning witches at the stake.
How far away are we from something like that “surging,” again?
