The other day, Trump floated the idea of debarring the mentally ill from being able to legally buy guns. Of course, they already are (anyone who buys a gun must fill out a form attesting that they are not mentally ill) but what he had in mind was adding so-called “trans” people to the list of debarred people.
He’s quite right that such people are mentally ill. It is a measure of just how beaten down American society has become that this statement is “triggering” to so many. Nevertheless, a man who insists he is a woman and demands to be addressed as if he were is just as mentally ill as a man who insists he is Napoleon and demands to be addressed as “emperor.” Few employers would consider hiring the “emperor” and not many parents would leave their kids in his care. The man who insists he is a woman is even more alarming because he is manifesting sexual abnormality. The “emperor” might insist upon diplomatic protocol; that people bend knee when addressing him. What will a man in a dress insist on? What is roiling around in his mind?
It isn’t difficult to guess. The “emperor” hangs around other adults. So-called “trans” people seem very interested in kids. They are a receptive audience.
Such people are ill. This is self-evident. But should the government be debarring them from buying guns? How will the government determine who is mentally ill? What will the standard be?
These are really important questions that ought to be answered before amen’ing the entirely understandable desire to keep dangerous implements away from mentally ill people. For the same reason it ought to have been important to give some thought to what defines a “patriot” – and a “terrorist.”
And who gets to define what they are.
In authoritarian states the government decides. We live in an authoritarian state. Your former right as a free man to buy and possess a gun has become a conditional privilege – just the same as your former right to travel is now also a conditional privilege. You must get the state’s permission for both and the terms and conditions are set by the state. The state already has the power to debar the mentally ill from purchasing and possessing guns; the definition of “mentally ill” is merely somewhat circumspect, for the present. The government form you are required to fill out already asks whether you are being treated or have been treated for psychiatric disorders, been institutionalized, etc. People are supposed to self-report, in other words. But so long as there are no “flags” – i.e., no records in the system that “flag” the applicant when the forms are processed – the transaction goes through.
It does not prevent a “trans” person from buying weapons. See for example the case of the mentally ill young man who recently shot up the Catholic school. There is video of him purchasing things at a fun store while wearing a very pretty headband. Clearly he was mentally ill – because men who are right in the head do not wear women’s clothing.
But are people who correctly identify “trans” people as mentally ill not right in the head? “Trans” people think so – and what happens when they regain control of the government? There are all kinds of phobias that are regarded as evidence of not being right-in-the-head by the Woke (which is to say, the authoritarian Left). And that is why it is dangerous to amen the idea of having the government debar the “mentally ill” from buying or possessing guns, especially when the idea is being trotted out by the Right.
The truly mentally ill will get them regardless. They always manage.
It’s the rest of us who will find it harder to manage.
Remember that authoritarian Leftists consider opposition to their authority to be prima facie evidence of mental illness. They call it “Oppositional Defiance Disorder.”
So think about what you amen – before you amen it.

I think this sets a very dangerous precedent. As many have already reiterated here, at some point, anyone who thinks for themselves, thinks outside the box, or has a different, opposing opinion will be labeled “mentally ill” and thus, will be considered “unfit” to be “allowed” to own firearms. Considering that in the psychiatric field, there are no blood test, brain scans, etc. to actually diagnose someone, and is purely on the “professional opinion” of a doctor, said standards will be used against someone who just wants to be left alone, and with the ability to defend themselves and their family.
I agree, Shadow – that it sets a dangerous precedent. And I agree with Bill (comment above) about the best way to handle this, that being to allow (Jesus!) gun sellers to decide for themselves whether to sell a gun to someone. That plus severe consequences for anyone who recklessly/criminally uses a gun ought to solve almost all of the problems caused by problematic people.
The reality of mental illness is that it exists on a spectrum from irrelevant neuroses (sniffles/covid) to full blown serial killer psychoses and reality optional schizophrenia(Ebola)
I always considered it none of my business and their problem, until it affects others. Hopefully the afflicted learn to deal with their own problems or get help to do so. Once they start harming property or people, then the mental illness becomes a matter of public interest.
Having said that, when mental illness is cultivated and celebrated, this also crosses a line as it affects the lives and liberties of private people. What has been done across western civilization in the last 20 years is an abomination worthy of a new inquisition.

I think the old standby “danger to self or others” is the most appropriate criterion here.
Even that can be difficult to assess with any accuracy, beyond the most immediately extreme & obvious cases. And (as with any form of power) has some potential to be abused.

My conscious decision to drive without seat belts and ride without helmets and drive open cars, to own weapons and practice with them, to drink alcohol, all could be criticized as endangering myself. I cannot judge what would be retribution vs rehabilitation, I would contend that restitution is the only rational measure. If you take a life, you owe a life, not necessarily execution, but a lifetime of enslavement to your victim and their heirs. Or they may choose to kill you, as their legitimate property.
I believe vengeance belongs to the Lord. Human vengeance only begets feuds and cycles of evil.

I should have qualified that. Any real crime; i.e., a crime of violence.
It’s a slippery slope. Gun or no gun isn’t a qualifier, it’s only outcome. If you kill someone it simply does not matter if you did it with a gun, knife, your hands or a baseball bat. Adding any immaterial reasons only ensnares innocent or puts others into no compromise unforeseen situations.
The same logic applies to driving. How does it matter if you’re drunk or stoned or distracted or just a bad driver if you have a wreck?
Or hate crimes. How does it make an assault or murder worse if the victim is gay?
You either commit a crime or you don’t. You might fairly assign severity. Being premeditated homicide is a murder vs an accidental manslaughter or justified self defense. But those things don’t change the facts, that someone is dead only affect the punishment or restitution.
A example of unintended consequences is buying a gun and learning to shoot could point to how serious about committing a murder you were. But it could also be used against someone who wants to protect him or herself. It’s the blunt hammer prosecutors use to send a concealed carrier to prison for life. They argue you had a -desire- to kill someone just by the act of owning a gun and practicing with man shaped targets. Often evidence is not admitted or is confusing on how and why. Like if you carry going into a sketchy neighborhood the prosecution might insinuate that you -wanted- to be in a situation where you might be attacked. The “state” only wants someone to go to jail, they really don’t care about getting to the bottom of details. If a concealed carrier is an easy trial to close a murder they are going to take it.
It happens all the time in rape cases where the victim’s intention is questioned by wearing suggestive clothing or being at lady’s night at the bar. She should have known better to be in that situation, right?

Nothing about what he did suggested offensive intent to me. Anyone who watched the videos would likely know better, but some still believe the kid was a cold-blooded murderer who wanted to be attacked. Crazy world.

This is on the table because a couple trans committed shootings at schools, which is a high profile event. If we extracted this to real numbers then no black people would be allowed to have guns because most gun violence is associated with that race.
Your rights should not be denied to you unless you have given reason. 14% of the population is on SSRIs, which has some correlation to shootings. Should that 14% be denied rights even though they didn’t do anything wrong?
A majority of gun homicides occur in 42 cities, specifically in portions of those cities. Should residents of those cities be denied access? Where do we draw the line?
There are twice as many vehicle accident fatalities, yet no one ever tries to target what drivers should not be allowed to have cars.
The reality is gun control is about controlling who has the ability to defend themselves, not preventing crime. Criminals still get guns. Let the government expand who is a criminal and you will be on that list eventually.
The firearms dealers could be a non-governmental backstop to keeping guns away from people who probably shouldn’t have them. But eventually someone will sell anyone a gun. Might not be a guy with a storefront but there will be a seller if there’s a buyer.
So do we just accept that a given number of people will shoot at others? Just like we accept that a certain number of licensed drivers aren’t capable of driving? You just contradicted your own argument in this post, by admitting that both Catholic Social Services and Baptist Social Services are involved in facilitating illegal immigration. In fact, Catholic Social Services has been the largest NGO involved in flooding the US with illegal immigrants under the Biden administration.
You didn’t address my point that it is almost exclusively Muslim illegal immigrants pouring into Europe that are destroying multiple European countries. Yet somehow, all of your ire is directed at Jews, none at the Muslims who are doing this. In fact, Muslim immigrants have established no go zones in various European countries. Some have expressed their intention to ultimately take over these European countries and even to implement Sharia law after they have taken them over. This doesn’t seem to bother you, since you have never mentioned it and seem to spend all of your time complaining about how evil the Jews are. Perhaps you should spend some time in countries like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan, where there are no Jews at all, and see just how much you would like living there.

There is plenty of corruption, cultism, psychopathy, and evil among Jews and in Jewish communities, as you have pointed out. There is also plenty of these qualities among Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, Muslims, Hindus, Scientologists, atheists, transhumanists, and innumerable other religions and cults. Evil is universal. It exists everywhere in the world, among all races, religions, and classes of people. If no Jews existed in the world, you think we would suddenly be living in some kind of earthly paradise? The history of the world is one of endless war, murder, bloodshed, predation, torture, slavery, dictatorship. Civilization and the advent of ideas about freedom and human rights are a very recent phenomenon in human history.
In theory I would support this if the government could be trusted to be a good-faith actor, but it isn’t. Generally this stuff sets a precedent that is used to screw over normal people, like the (((Lautenberg))) amendment. This is why I have a problem with background checks in general, you are asking for the government’s blessing, which means the 2A is no longer a right but a privilege conferred if you meet the government’s criteria.
I think the only real way to effectively implement something like this would be to involuntarily institutionalize all trannies and essentially place them in the same category as the schizophrenics and psychotics (which would probably qualify them for disability, LOL).
Of course this would require the cooperation of the medical and psychological communities, which right now you don’t have — they are actively engaged in performing “gender reassignment” surgeries.
In the case of the Minnesota dude, I have seen no information that he actually did the surgery, only changed his name, so that also raises the question as to what level of “transgenderism” qualifies. Do you commit and prohibit dudes who dress in drag and put on make-up, or only dudes who did the dick-chop?
