Is it possible to conceive of a less meaningful act than “standing” with Ukraine? Or with Israel?
Or with any abstraction?
How does one “stand” with another country, which is another abstraction as there are only people who live in countries? And how does one “stand” with those people by not doing anything – other than changing out the flag icons of the foreign country you “stand” with to accompany your Tweets?
It’s a modern virtue-signaling fatuity on par with “stay safe” – and “we’re all in this together.”
Kumbaya.
The Left excels at “standing” with various things. Whatever the latest thing is. This is natural, of course, because the Left only stands for one thing, really. That thing being dogmatic (on the part of its leadership cadres) and doggy (on the part of its useful idiot masses) devotion to “standing” with whatever the latest thing is. It can be Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeev. It can become Israel (uber alles, of course).
Then it will be “climate change” or some other thing.
So long as you “stand” with whatever it is now, you’re in good with the Left.
And that helps us understand what people are being trained to do when they are pressured to “stand” with whatever the latest thing is.
It is the same training Americans began to receive more than 20 years ago – times flies! – when they got habituated to spreading their legs and raising their arms in order to be allowed to board a commercial flight. The object being not merely obedience but habituation to arbitrary authority demanding it.
In former times, Americans had been habituated to think of themselves as free people who were under no obligation to obey just because they were told to. They would ask why – and if they didn’t get a good answer (other than Just Because) they would be inclined to disobey. It was once the American Way.
They chafed at violations of their rights, including the right to be left in peace when they’d done nothing to disturb the peace.
It was once – as the saying used to go – a free country.
It is interesting one rarely if ever hears that saying anymore.
At least Americans are honest about that. The country that was once a free country has become a regimented one and not merely in the literal stand here sense. It has metastasized into a place in which everyone is expected (and pressured by the threat of social opprobrium for not meeting expectations) to “stand” with various causes-du-jour, i.e., whatever the latest thing happens to be.
It’s marvelous – in a horrible way – to see how well so many Americans have taken to their training, like seals or Labrador Retrievers.
How eager they are to show they “stand” with whatever they’re told the latest thing is. And condemn those who show the slightest lack of enthusiasm.
People who were rabid about how “we’re all in this together” during the mass-psychosis event styled the “pandemic” shifted seamlessly into rabidity about the need to “stand” with Ukraine, whatever that means.
And now they are just as seamlessly shifting their “standing” to Israel, as they’ve been told to.
What will the “stand” with next? The better question to ask is: What will they fall for next?
Orwell was perhaps the first to describe this business in his best-known novel, 1984. He describes a party rally at which an orator is haranguing the crowd about the latest thing – the only thing, for as long as the party says it is the only thing. That thing being the war against Eastasia, which has been continuous for as long as anyone pretends to remember. In mid-harangue, the orator is handed a piece of paper which he quickly scans and then proceeds without more than a very slight pause to resume his harangue, with the war now being with Eurasia instead.
It has become the latest thing – and everyone in the crowd (save Winston Smith, the hero of the novel) understands where things stand.
This is where America stands now.
It’s not so much a country anymore as a kind of continental amen chorus, bellicosely “standing” with whatever they are told the latest thing is.
Right now, it’s Israel. In a month, it’ll be some other thing.
It’s laborious to try to keep up with all this “standing.” Luckily, it’s easy enough to change one’s Twitter flag from gold and yellow to white and blue.

I won’t take apart this rant but why do we have anything to do with the middle east? We have two enormous oceans protecting us and plenty of our own resources. We just can’t mind our own fucking business for some reason.

The South was beaten into submission by the Federal government (i.e., the North). Even such admirable figures as James Longstreet learned to love their new master, after having been beaten sufficiently.
The “South” is now a facade, increasingly McCorporatized.
Been reading some literature that at least ATTEMPTS to state why (1) the first seven, then four more, formerly US states seceded in 1861 to form the CSA, and (2) why the USA, under control of a “sectionalist” President, good ol’ “Dishonest Abe” Lincoln, had an economic imperative to forcibly prevent that.
There were many causes of why division within the “United” States from its inception to 1861, slavery, tariffs, and culture being the main identifiable ones. The cause of the WAR, however, was that by 1861, the Federal Government, no longer content to be the mere servant of the several states and under “sectional” control, that is, enough of a majority in enough of the Northern and Western states (long before California had its electoral dominance, of course!) to get Lincoln election with but 40 percent of the popular vote, and virtually NONE south of the Mason-Dixon line, decided that ratification of the Constitution by nine of the original states that abrogated the Articles of Confederation, and admission of the ones that were subsequently created, was an act of SURRENDER. Therefore, FedGov was going to ENFORCE keeping those “rebel” states in the “Union”, which, after four years of brutal warfare, it finally achieved military success.
This was best recently illustrated, of all things, by a DISNEY-PIXAR movie, the 2004 edition of “The Incredibles”, where a frustrated, “retired” superhero, the hulking Bob Parr, insurance adjuster, corporate guy, and somewhat-devoted husband and father, at least when not reminiscing about the “glory days”, gets fired after he’s had enough of his whiny, overbearing boss and puts the guy through a dozen or so parallel walls. A mysterious shadow figure (who’s animated with quite the “figure”) then hires him, in an initiation tests, to subdue a rebellious droid on some remote Pacific island. When she briefs Bob, he has it figured out already:

The “smart-ness” of FedGov, by 1861, was that it had enough corporate knowledge and momentum that it already had the ability to dominate the states that it’d been created to “serve”, it was just a matter of having the GUIDANCE, i.e., like a smart little bastard, sitting on its shoulder, whispering instructions to the giant. The elective plurality that sufficed, on a sectional basis, to render an electoral majority to put “their man”, i..e, the corporate lawyer and STOOGE, Lincoln, in the White House, was in turn steered by the then-corporate and banking interests that dominated Northern politics, and THOUGHT it had the Southern states economically under their thumb.
Like what causes MOST wars to break out…they did NOT, or at least as securely under their “thumb” as they’d thought. The same banking and corporate interests that thought they could offer the South the prospect of “guaranteeing” the continuation of slavery, but also impose the Morrill tariffs, were completely taken by surprise at the resolve of the Southern states to secede and organize, militarily, to defend themselves. Please keep in mind that the desire to secede was NOT, by any means, universal in the South, indeed, all but South Carolina raised at least a battalion-sized unit to fight in the UNION army, the Unionist sentiment being the strongest in the Appalachians where Lincoln’s second Veep, Andrew Johnson of (eastern) Tennessee hailed from, and which western counties of Virginia broke off in the 1861 Wheeling Convention, to eventually (and ILLEGALLY) form the state of WEST Virginia in 1863. This denial, and greater shock, was realized at the First Battle of Manassas, what the Yankees termed Bull Run (Confederate sources labelled battles according to the nearest town, while the Union usually labelled them by the nearest river or other body of water), where the elites of Washington rode out in their fine wagons, with box lunches, to watch the suppression of the “rebellion”. Needless to say, the Union Army was thoroughly beaten, mainly by the superior leadership of the Confederacy, mostly recently high-ranking US Army officers that had, like Robert E Lee, resigned their commissions to fight for their native states, and both the US Army and the elite Washingtonians beat a hasty and frenzied retreat back to DC. Had the Confederate Army been in a position to exploit their victory and CAPTURE DC, likely Maryland would have likewise seceded, FedGov would have had to evacuate to north of the Mason-Dixon line, and the “Civil War’ would have been won right then and there. It did play out DIFFERENTLY, of course!
Stonewall Jackson begged Jefferson Davis for 13 thousand troops to pursue and take DC after the first Battle of Bull Run. Davis being the pu**y he was refused. War would have been over right then.

Except the South wasn’t beaten into submission, to put it quite clearly, they lost. Don’t get me wrong I am not rejoicing over this fact, but the South was conquered by the North due to bad decisions, missed opportunities, the death of Jackson, and Lee conducting a gentleman’s war.
If it didn’t happen between 1861-1865 it was going to happen eventually. The North was erecting factories, had better infrastructure, and more people. The South was holding onto a pipe dream that in time, was going to be destroyed. The end of slavery was going to happen whether the South liked it or not.
If a Civil War occurred today the South would be better prepared and would likely defeat their Northern neighbors since the South is really the new industry stronghold where close to 60% of all residents now inhabit.

Lee was initially a reluctant secessionist; but his attitude changed the more he had to deal with those people – as would often call them. The federal armies conducted themselves despicably while (in general) the Army of Northern Virginia held to a more honorable standard. Eventually, Lee realized this was a no-quarters (either asked for or given) war. Too late, alas.
In my reading of the history of the war, one of the key failure points (for the Confederacy) was when documents pertaining to Lee’s troop dispositions prior to his first attempt to bring the war to the North (at Antietam, ultimately) fell into Federal hands. Had they not, Lee would likely have trounced Burnside (as he did McLellan) and quite possible forced the North – via souring public opinion in the North – to sue for an armistice and acceptance of the Confederacy’s right to choose its own government.
Such a tragic story.

There likely would have been no war (or it would have been very short) if Maryland had agreed to secede. Depending on what view one has. Maryland either saved or destroyed the Union.
I was born south of the Mason Dixon Line and am a Southern girl by heart, but I believe fate played a part on what became of the South from Maryland not seceding, Lincoln putting Maryland under martial law, the Army of Northern Virginia’s plans being wrapped around a few cigars and found by Union troops, England not assisting the South, etc. Would the country have been as successful if it did not take place or if the South won? Who knows, but the US did show that it can cause (and solve) its own issues without outside interference. I wish the rest of the world would take note of this. Hell, I wish the US government would take note of this. Territorial disputes will always arise and it does not require outside resources to fund them or assist them. People need to duke it out on their own and the rest of us need to learn to mind our own business.
Lincoln ordered the arrest of the entire Maryland legislature at Annapolis, plus SCOTUS Chief Justice Roger B Taney, a Marylander. Ever heard of “Federal” Hill in Baltimore, near the Inner Harbor? So named because it was their then-“Mount Trashmore”, covered over as any trash heap would be with soil, overlooking the city. The US Army hauled the guns from nearby Fort McHenry, site of where Francis Scott Key composed “The Star-Spangled Banner”, and trained them ON Baltimore, to deter any “rebel” uprising. For obvious reason, Maryland wasn’t given a chance to ELECT to secede.

C) Poison gas, followed by cremation. Probably the cheapest, but has significant PR problems if photos or videos get out. Still, it doe pay homage to Fritz Haber, known as the father of chemical warfare.
I predict the IDF will choose option A. Clean, though expensive. Expense no object if someone else is paying for it. BOHICA, fellow Americans. Buy Raytheon stock, if you can afford it.
I suspect if that ever happened someone would get charged with littering.
What gets me is the complete lack of nuance in the discussion. Everything is a binary issue, and the only solution is the one that has the most repression. Yet people eat it up! I think nuance is a function of introspective/critical thinking. And neither is encouraged in this country. Instead – as you say binary and often bellicose posturing. For example, the recent discussions (sic) with LyspoonerBot (who has not returned after I informed it that it would have ot provide its real full name as a condition of being permitted to post henceforth) about the reckless cop. His adamant position was that “the law” is “the law” (and it is, of course) and must be enforced, regardless of nuance.
“I AM…the LAW!” is only funny if “Sly” (Sylvester Stallone) says it. Or if Rob Schneider parodies it!
As for The Law™, most of the laws were based on “Remember that one guy who did that thing that time?” Only later does it become convenient to start combing the legal system for reasons to prosecute. Or worse, persecute.
Usually there’s some heinous crime committed, but because the defendant might have a good lawyer the DA piles on a bunch of minor crimes that pretty much existing makes you in a legal grey area. That way even if the guy “gets off” for the primary crime there’s a bunch of secondary charges that the DA can then point to as a win.

We have fought wars that are in Israel’s interest for decades, but we at least maintained the pretense that we were doing it on our own, not for our masters in Tel Aviv. This time it sure looks like we are willing to go to war for Israel and/or back them up while they kill women and children in the Gaza strip.
Did Hamas commit atrocious deeds? Yes. Has Israel committed atrocious deeds? Yes. It is not in the interest of me or of the United States to “stand with” either side. It is not in the interest of me or the United States to pick sides in a religious and territorial blood feud that has been going on for centuries on a different continent on the other side of the planet.

I wasn’t there, of course, but it does feel a lot like 1914 all over again. The same sense that w’re being dragged along by a rip tide that’s beyond our control. Thankfully, Israel delayed the invasion of Gaza again, citing bad weather. Never mind the fact that it’s clear over there, and it will remain clear for days.
Of course it’s 1914 again. Because all our major problems stem from US entry into WW1 and the changes made to finance it in late 1913. Without the USA entering WW1 the middle east wouldn’t have been carved up the way it was, there wouldn’t have been WW2. There might not be a federal reserve. Although the european powers may have still gone to central banking to finance the war. But without US entry they would have all run out of men, material, and energy and found a mutual peace.

I agree with everything you have said.
For my teenagers school assignment last week I actually had them watch a video on the history of Israel and Palestine. I had watched it first and it was very “matter of fact”. The video was not trying to push a narrative and I wanted my kids to come to their own conclusions. We discussed it later over dinner. The vote was pretty unanimous. Both sides have done some pretty horrific things.
A World War will solve nothing except decrease the world’s population (maybe that is the goal). As you stated above, we cannot beat an ideology. It is a waste of resources and most importantly, lives. Four thousand years of anger is not going to subside with troops on the ground and a range of missiles.
I am afraid the Ukraine and Russian War is going to look like walking through a field of wildflowers versus what is coming. The war drums are loud and they are determined to destroy everyone of us before this is over.

I think Israel had far more to gain with an enhanced relationship with the Saudi’s and the Saudi’s with Israel due to the nut job Iran mullahs want a showdown with the Sunnis someday down the road. Israel has made a garden out of the desert with their water tech and they make very good weapons. Saudi wants both and a quiet relationship with a nuclear power to send a message to Iran.
If it is as you say…then Saudi Arabia has no choice but to go nuclear themselves (which Israel does not want) which they may be able to purchase a weapon thanks to all the spare cash Bite-me put in their pockets driving energy prices thru the roof.

The only quibble I have with what you said is that Pearl Harbor was a false flag; it wasn’t, because Japan did indeed do the attack. However, FDR and his lieutenants knew the attack was coming, and they allowed it to happen. In actuality, we left the door open, and we let the Japanese in to attack.

Standing? How about kneeling before your betters? Just how long will this “standing with” last? Billions are sent to Is-a-Real-Hell every year and have been for decades. This may be the tipping point where nations around the globe are to “be with Israel or against it” and these invading European Jews will find out that most of the planet can’t stand them any longer.
For my fellow Christians “standing with” I would point out a couple passages from the Old Testament that reveal the lost nature of the Zionist project in the Levant. First is 1 Samuel 8 where God warns against “earthly” government. This experiment in post Westphalia nation building is the epitome of that transgression. Second would be the book of Zechariah wherein God breaks his covenant with “the chosen ones”, Zech 11:8-10: The flock detested me, and I grew weary of them 9 and said, “I will not be your shepherd. Let the dying die, and the perishing perish. Let those who are left eat one another’s flesh.”
10 Then I took my staff called Favor and broke it, revoking the covenant I had made with all the nations.
Backing those that would mock you and destroy the Palestinian Christians is not a good look. Not to mention the Christian communities that have been destroyed in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere by the U.S. Military in doing the bidding of the Zionists.

With some people having been afflicted with COVID jab mania, it’s a wonder someone didn’t come up with something like “I stand with Pfizer” or “I stand with the vaccinated”. And with many people viewing Tony Fauci as some sort of “Public Health Hero”, I’m surprised there hasn’t been a “I stand with Dr. Fauci” campaign on social media, though for a while there was a “Let’s get vaccinated. We can do this” campaign on Facebook, as people who got vaxxed plastered that banner on their profile picture as if to virtue signal to the world about how they “Did their civic duty”.
And with this insane push for NET ZERO disguised as “Saving the planet from climate change”, what are the odds that someone will come up with a quote like “I stand with the climate”?

Well-said. The Right – which is functionally synonymous with “conservative” – conserves nothing. And so it advances nothing – except Leftism.
Anyone notice that now we are being asked to stand with Israel or with the Palestinians or with Ukraine or with Russia? What kind of stand should one take? What if I reject this whole notion of standing and choose to remain silent and sit? Or go my own way? Or recognize that this world is crazy and neither side is worthy of recognition and support?
I like your blog because you are one of the few who doesn’t belong to a right or left tribe. None of the above!
