Elon Musk’s X is supposedly a place where people are allowed to speak – that is, post – freely. And that’s technically true. Elon generally permits people to post freely. But whether anyone sees what they post is another matter. Some days, they’re allowed to see. But the next day, no one sees. It’s as if you’d never posted all the things you posted. No. It’s not “as if.” It’s exactly like that. As in you might as well not have posted anything at all. 
I have been trying to document this by taking screenshots of the replies – they are styled “notifications” – I get (and don’t get) each day to the things I post every day to document the extreme and thus almost certainly artificial variation in the number of notifications I get from one day to the next.
For example, one day – just the other day – I posted my usual two links to the two most recent articles I’d published here on EPautos, plus my usual six or so replies to things posted by other people on X. There were no notifications/replies to any of these. But the very next day, after posting two new links and about the same number of replies to people who’d posted something I thought worth responding to, I found 20-plus notifications awaiting me. 
This pattern repeats regularly. It is indicative of both suppression and manipulation. The suppression part is obvious enough. You post – but no one sees. More finely, the algorithm keeps anyone from seeing – including people who have “followed” you – unless they take the additional step of finding your “feed” and checking to see what you’ve posted. They are not notified that you have posted something, in other words. This is a very clever – and very subtle – form of suppression. It is not “in your face” and blatant – as the suppression done by X when it was still Twitter and controlled by Leftists rather than the Plate Lipped Albino was.
There is plausible deniability.
I have confirmed this is happening to others like me, who are journalists or activists who fall outside the Right-Left paradigm of acceptable speech.
Such dramatic swings cannot be natural; they are persuasive evidence of algorithmic machinations.
A related part of this speech suppression is the silent dropping of people who’ve followed you – or whom you’ve followed. You don’t notice unless you take the time to check – and keep track.
As regards the manipulation:
It works like Stalin’s chicken. You remember the story? A visitor asked the Soviet dictator how he kept people not merely in line but coming back. Stalin brought forth a chicken and roughly plucked the bird, then cast it just as roughly off to the side. The now-naked bird shivered pathetically and fearfully over in a corner. Stalin then reached his hand into the pocket of his tunic and brought out a small handful of scratch corn, which he spread by his boots. The desperate bird came and gratefully ate. 
This is the model employed by the Plate Lipped Albino – or his algorithm. Does it really matter which? The effect being the same.
Some defenders of the faith will say that if one pays the PLA then one gets reach; i.e., people will see what you’re free to post. But this is not “free speech,” by definition. This is not to say that the PLA hasn’t got the right to charge people for reach. It is to point out the disingenuousness of his “free” speech claims. It’s not free – so why claim that it is?
Put another way, why not be honest and state openly that it is pay-for-speech (and reach)?Probably for the same reason that most if not all of what Musk does is disingenuous, the most glaringly obvious and effronterous example being his EV Grift. He says he wants to end the federal subsidization of battery powered vehicles now that he (Tesla) no longer needs them. In other words, he used the subsidies to build Tesla – and now wants to make sure Tesla’s EV rivals are denied the same artificial advantage he used to his own (and Tesla’s) benefit.
His DOGE operation says it is rooting out waste and abuse – but those are in the eyes of the beholder, aren’t they? Many Americans might say they consider it wasteful and abusive to be forced to hand over their money – to finance a billionaire’s rockets.
Better be careful not to say such things on X – which might as well still be Twitter, where at least the suppression was out-in-the-open and lacked the manipulation.

There is a way…
Every social media site with a market share of over 10% should be regulated as a common carrier, not unlike telephone companies. When was the last time you heard of a telephone common carrier censoring speech of its customers? It just doesn’t happen. Being regulated as a common carrier absolves the social media site of responsibility for subscribers’ content.
Repeal or modify Section 230 of the telecommunications act to effect real change and abolish censorship.
For those that say that telephone companies are different because their customers pay for the service, I maintain that social media customers also pay. Their personal information thrust upon the internet is payment.
I have learned that it is the same (or very similar) thing on Substack, which advertises itself as the safe home for dissenting voices. Like you pointed out about Twatter/X that claim is essentially true and even more, i.e., people are not getting accounts suspended for posting wrongthink.
However, I have observed a few key “features” that end up being very similar to X. On Substack you can “subscribe” and/or “follow” any publication or person (respectively). Subscribe is for the “posts” (i.e., what most people would call an “article”) and follow is for the “Notes” which is similar to X posts (i.e., like Facebook where you can share an article, pictures, or thoughts randomly outside of a full-length article).
Actually people can “subscribe” to other people which then signs you up for all of their publications; a single person can have multiple publications each one would be like EP Autos or how Mike Adams has different sites (i.e., a home for articles of whatever flavor).
I don’t publish anything on Substack and, in fact, I’m going to vaporize my account in the near future. I’ve been putting that off for a while now, but it’s absolutely going to happen before a certain milestone that is coming up for me. However, for whatever reason, I have a few subscribers and followers. I suppose some people got a kick out of one of my Notes for some reason. I certainly do not intend to create publications; therefore, I certainly will not generate income for Substack.
Substack will show you “stats” for your posts. In almost every single case that I’ve bothered to check out of curiosity, NONE of the people that subscribe or follow me have ever interacted with my Notes. Maybe I missed the one or two here and there, I dunno.
I’ve made some comments or “restacked” other authors posts and then I’ve gotten huge amounts of interactions. One of such was a clip from Monty Python’s Life of Brian where the guy said he wants to be a woman and have babies and John Cleese’s character explained why that’s nonsense. I said “I want this John Cleese back, not the retards that run his Substack acount”; man oh man, did that get traction and people explaining to me how Cleese has always been whatever the hell, yadda, yadda.
That’s apparently the “business model” that is being followed by social media in general and, in some cases, with the heavy hand of censorship aka “moderation”. It’s all so tiresome and, for that matter, will make it much easier to walk away from. Clearly, the people that expressed in interest in what I’ve said are not the ones that interact with what I say there! Unless I make publications that generate income for Substack, my posts will only be visible as attachments to others that do generate income for Substack.
It’s how the world works in 2025.

Yes, but the dilemma is this: I post links to here on X so that people who won’t otherwise see my stuff do see it (sometimes, when the PLA permits). I have on multiple occasions made the same case you have to people on X – including people I know personally – to leave X and spend the time they spend on X communicating with other like-minded people on other web sites (including this one) where speech is free (and so is reach) so as to propagate actually free speech rather than enable speech suppression. I get nowhere doing this. So I keep posting on X because it’s the only way to reach the wider audience. I could cease posting, of course. But then my “voice” is stifled by myself what good does that do for me or EPautos?

I know I am not seeing everything you post but I don’t see everything everyone I follow posts. But I usually see something from everyone. Not sure if the issue is twitter itself or if it’s the way I use it. It’s not quite as bad as facebook but because it doesn’t sort by date and crashes occasionally or gets confused by the way I use it I am sure things get missed. Facebook resets the feed if I don’t pay attention to it for more than about 15 seconds. So I know that lots of stuff I never see.
