Cuffed for Nothing

Here’s another video showing what comes of endowing a caste of enforcers with the power to do things to people who’ve done nothing illegal, under color of the law.

A man is sitting in his car in a marked parking spot in a public area. This is completely legal yet it served as the pretext for a law enforcer to harass the man. The enforcer feigns concern – as if there were something wrong – but almost immediately begins demanding ID from the man, who has asked to be left alone because he’s not doing anything illegal.

Naturally, this “resisting without violence” – a real term coming into currency with the law enforcement caste – results in yet another incident of over-the-top escalation. More enforcers show up, some wearing full Fallujah kit. All because a man doing nothing illegal balked at being ordered to produce his “papers.”

You can see – you can hear – in the video the enforcers trying to find something to “bust” the guy for. Never mind that by now they have confirmed the man is the owner of the car, the car is fully ear-tagged and there is nothing they can legally “bust” him for. Nevertheless his cuffed as if he were a criminal while the criminals try to find something to “bust” him for, such as his supposedly resembling a guy who is wanted for something. He doesn’t look anything like the other dude but his birthdate is “so close” that the enforcer thinks this constitutes evidence that he might be the other dude, which they have established he isn’t by now.

While this is going on, other enforcers show up and box the man’s car in – so that he cannot “flee.”

This will be a challenge for many freedom-lovin’ Americans who “back the blue” but try to imagine a group of thugs just showing up, ordering you to submit to their demands and then boxing in your vehicle with theirs. You’d be within your rights – legally as well as morally – to defend yourself in this circumstance. Unless the thugs are wearing state-issued costumes. Then – if you “resisted” – more than likely you’d be shot dead.

It is a near-miracle this man wasn’t. Perhaps because he was filming and the thugs saw it. They certainly weren’t much deterred by their own body cameras, which also showed it. (This is evidence that enforcers are either not very smart or just very confident in their status as praetorians who are held to a different and much lesser standard than us “civilians.”)

Eventually a more senior enforcer shows up and – to his credit – orders the man be uncuffed and let go. But observe that the senior officer does not arrest any of the lower-status enforcers who illegally detrained this man, forced him out of his vehicle and placed him in manacles without any lawful basis for doing those things.

We are constantly told about unfair it is to judge the “good cops” by the actions of a “few bad apples.” Well, why is it that the “good cops” rarely, if ever, arrest the bad ones – even when they do bad (illegal) things right in front of them?

If you or I jaywalk in front of an enforcer we will be enforced upon. But an enforcer can “detain” an innocent man – using threats of murderous violence if the victim “resists” even he does so “without violence,” as by just walking away – and then box his car in so he can’t leave, force him out of his vehicle, manacle him as if he were a criminal – and get away with it.

Imagine – if you can – you or me or any other “civilian” doing to an enforcer what these enforcers did to that man. We’d be lucky to not get shot. We’d absolutely be taken to jail – at gunpoint.

But not these bad cops – because there are bo good cops. Sorry, Serpico was a movie. Not our reality.
