Reader Question: Replacement for Lexus RX?

Here’s the latest reader question, along with my reply!

Harvey writes: After 21 good years (and 172,000 miles), my Lexus RX330 needs significant repairs, forcing me into the auto buying market. I don’t drive much now – working remote, having driven only 3,000 miles this past year. My kids are grown. I like the feel of an SUV – being higher up. I also like having the extra trunk room. (My wife drives a Highlander, which we use if we need even more room.)

Do you have any recommendations as to what else (besides an RX350) I should consider? I’m concerned about safety. I’d prefer the car not be able to track me (but recognize I may be living in a bygone era. I’m not interested in a hybrid (unless you tell me I should).

My reply: Given how little you drive, have you considered getting those repairs your Lexus needs done? I imagine the cost would be far less than replacing it with a newer (used) vehicle, especially if you’re wanting something comparable. It might be worth running the numbers, to get some idea of the pros and cons.

If you are set on replacing the RX330, I do have some suggestions – premised on the assumption that you’d like something similar to the RX. The Acura MDX is a fine choice. It still has Honda’s excellent 3.5 liter V6 and less rather than more “assistance” tech. If you go back about five or so model years, you should be able to find one in excellent condition with low miles (say 70,000 or so) that ought to serve well for at least the next ten years, given the minimal driving you do.

Another one you may like is the Buick Envision (my review of the ’25 model is here). These are very nice – and also nicely priced relative to a Lexus or BMW, etc.

Hope this helps – and if you have any follow-ups, please ask away!
