Double Clover!

Clovers often run in pairs. Check out these two:

Even when I passed them both – on the right! – they both stayed in the left lane. You can see the Clover in the Tahoe wandering across the double yellow into the opposing lane of traffic. These “drivers” are objectively dangerous as well as inept (the two are related) yet they are effectively immune from being stopped by cops, even though it is illegal to cross the double yellow and also to not yield to faster-moving traffic when driving in the left lane and the right lane is open. Cops rarely – if ever – enforce those laws. They spend the majority of their enforcing time on “speeders” and smartphone scofflaws. It is illegal to “speed” and (in most states) to text while driving but neither are objectively – necessarily – dangerous. It is always dangerous – to other drivers, especially – to wander across the double yellow. Driving faster than a sign says is just that. Cops do it all the time, too.

This gets at the meat of the problem, which is that “illegal” driving is given more attention by cops than dangerous/incompetent driving. Indeed, the attention focused on merely “illegal” driving has become pedantic (and tyrannical) in the extreme. Cops will do violent, sudden u-turns in heavy traffic to wheel around in Hot Pursuit of a driver whose car is missing one of its ear tags or that has a crack in the windshield. They lurk like barracudas under piers in cutouts, waiting for a “speeder” to go after. They will ride a motorcycle at high speed through traffic to catch a seatbelt scofflaw.

But Clovers are indulged.

Why? Because none of this is actually about “safety.” It is about punishing people who can drive. Why would they want to do that? For the same reason people who can think are punished. For the same reason that ranchers steer bulls. Gaze into the glassy eyes of a steer and you will see a Clover looking back at you.
