According to AAA, the average cost of regular unleaded is now about $4.40 per gallon. In many states – notably, California – it is much higher. Apparently, they are about to run out of gas in California in just a few weeks from now – not because California hasn’t got plenty of oil but because California is dependent upon imported oil (due to regulatory strangling of in-California extraction and refining) and the supply of that has been throttled by Trump’s stupid, evil war. 
The national repercussions of CA running out of oil will be disastrous, for basically the same reason a body is in big trouble when one of its limbs is starved of blood and starts to die. Much of the rest of the country’s food comes from California. The production of that food is hugely dependent upon diesel and fertilizer, which is a petroleum product. It is not going too far to say that people in this country may not have enough to eat come fall. They do not see this as a possibility; they think things will continue as normal. Probably the people enjoying their morning coffee on the beach at Banda Aceh back in 2004 thought everything was normal, too – and then the tsunami came.
There is a lag time effect built into many world-changing events. It works something like the way a death-leak below the water line works to sink a big ship. Most of the passengers on Titanic weren’t worried in the immediate aftermath of the ship striking the iceberg. Some even played with the big chunks of ice that could be found on the deck. It was difficult to persuade them to get into the lifeboats, at first. About an hour later, they were clamoring to get on board the lifeboats. About an hour after that, Titanic went down.
Is it that bad? It certainly seems headed that way. How much longer before the cost of gas – never mind the cost of everything else – begins to break people? Yesterday, I took my old Trans-Am out for a therapy session. The sound of the 455 and the feel of the Hurst Super T-10 shifter soothe my unease about things, lift me – for awhile – out of the depression that pursues me as I contemplate what seems to me to be a deliberate, systematic effort to destroy the country, led by the man who so many of us thought might at least try to prevent its destruction.
I had to stop for some gas. Now, the Trans-Am is a small car – relative to a current SUV or pick-up. But it has a 22 gallon tank – which is about the same size tank as most current full-size SUVs and pick-ups have. It cost me $40 to put in a little more than a third of a tankful. A fill-up from empty would be over $100. Now, I am lucky in the sense that the Trans-Am is not my daily driver. If it were, I could not afford to drive it. The monthly cost would be $500 at least.
This is, however, what people who do drive trucks and SUVs are having to pay. Even if you drive a gas-sippy little crossover with a 12 gallon tank, you’re still looking at spending about $52 to fill it – and that assumes you live in a state with “low” gas prices.
The picture that accompanies this Gas Tax Report is no longer exaggerated. It is damn close to the actuality. By the end of the coming week, it is entirely possible the average cost of unleaded regular will be $4.50 – as in the picture. Soon, the picture will need to be updated to reflect current realities.
Does anyone remember Trump’s anointing back in ’24? When – to the treacly incantations of the odious Lee Greenwood – he shambled up to the stage wearing his ear bandage? Greenwood (a draft-deferring “patriot” who avoided “serving” just like the man he warbles to) prefaced his lyricized pabulum with encomiums to lower gas gas prices! lower food prices! – and here we are, not even two years later and gas prices are approaching double what they were just four months ago and food prices – that lag time effect – bound to follow.
It is like finding out your best friend stole your wallet and fucked your wife, too.
Maybe Americans will retreat into themselves – and the bottle – as Russians did, during the Soviet era. What can you do? It is truly horrible to contemplate that your life is at the mercy of people such as Trump and the people who put him in place. It is disorienting and depressing to find you have been sucked into a stupid, evil war by stupid, evil people over whom you have no meaningful control.
The saying has it that desperate people are dangerous people. How far away are we from very dangerous times?

North of chicago, I just saw a station with diesel over $6.00 a gallon; premium first hit that level a couple weeks ago. Even e85 just hit $3/gal.
Economy wise- it seems its a wash to ride a motorcycle that takes premium at 40mpg versus a flex fuel car that gets 20mpg for less than half the price in fuel

Interestingly enough, Eric (& LetMePicYou), what I have seen waking people up, is the kill switches coming to vehicles in 2027. For whatever reason, that has been a moment where the sheep (some of them) are waking up to the fact that they are losing everything. It will be interesting to see what happens come 2027, when the sh** gets real. Will it be enough to push back at TPTB and tell them where to go and how to get there? I can offer map and directions if they do not know the way. Or if they somehow get lost. As for the gas prices?
