When people are hated, there’s usually a reason why. Here’s an example:
A few weeks ago, a dude named Clarence Coyl and a friend drove through an open gate at the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge in Arizona. They were spotted by a Fish and Wildlife officer identified as P. Nielsen, who ordered them to leave. The pair did so. Read that again. Coyle left, as ordered.
That was, apparently, not enough for P. Nielsen, who followed them for 20 minutes until Coyl pulled into a gas station to pump some gas into his truck. When he returned to his truck after getting some sodas inside the station, P. Nielsen was there. P. Nielsen demanded to see Coyl’s ID. An argument ensued. Coyl demanded to know why he was being ordered to hand over his ID. Apparently, it is a minor offense to drive through an open gate onto the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge and P. Nielsen was determined to impose justice upon the offender, whatever it took.
P. Nielsen – wearing shorts and mirrored sunglasses, which makes him look like he’s auditioning for The Village People – draws his Taser and you can see for yourself he’s itchin’ to use it. He does exactly that, after Coyl calls him an asshole. But first, Coyle asked to know what crime he was being charged with. P. Nielsen did not say, exactly. We all know what it was. It’s not on the books – but it is enforced.
The high voltage Taser “deployment” lights Coyl on fire, resulting in severe burns. Apparently, P. Nielsen was not “trained” that sparks and gasoline don’t mix well. Actually, P. Nielsen was “trained.” According to Fox News, it is against Department of Interior policy to use “electronic control devices” such as Tasers near flammable materials.
Coyl’s calling the Village People wanna-be an “asshole” served to override the training.
Sigh.
Once again we see a situation in which grossly disproportionate force – potentially lethal force – is used against a “civilian” for the crime of Failing to Respect Muh Authoritah. Coyl wasn’t trying to run away from P. Nielsen. He certainly wasn’t threatening the “safety” of P. Nielsen. He was asking what crime or offense it was he’d committed. And he called him an asshole.
That was offensive to P. Nielsen. Maybe his ‘roids induced the rage. Will they test P. Nielsen for that?
It is quite possible than P. Nielsen way overstepped whatever authoritah he actually does have as a Fish and Wildlife officer, which sounds like he’s basically a park ranger. Coyl left the park – and so, presumably, the nimbus of P. Nielsen’s authoritah. Nonetheless, according to news reports, P. Nielsen was going to make sure Coyl respected his authoritah. It was something like Sheriff Buford T. Justice following Burt Reynolds in his Trans-Am across multiple state lines, just without the good humor and withe homicidal intent. Watching the video, it’s clear P. Nielsen’s affronted ego overran his judgment (assuming he ever had any) in that no justifiable reason can be seen for Tasering Coyle. He wasn’t an armed and dangerous criminal. Just a dude arguing with cop over a penny ante “violation.”
Will there be any consequences for P. Nielsen? Of course not. There are rarely any consequences for the P. Nielsens out there serving and protecting us, good and hard. P. Nielsen is endowed with immunities and privileges that “civilians” do not enjoy. Never mind that the Village People aren’t the military and “officer” isn’t a rank.
P. Nielsen may get a few days of paid leave. One thing is for sure. P. Nielsen isn’t going to get arrested and sent to prison for a year or so, as he ought to be – because anyone else who did what he did would surely get some hard time for recklessly and sadistically doing what P. Nielsen did.
The ugly reality is that what P. Nielsen did wasn’t unusual – excepting the burning his victim part. Armed government workers have been trained to do this sort of thing. To regard anything less than cringing submission as “resisting” and a “threat.”
And they wonder why they’re hated.

I worked for a defense contractor around that time, and anyone who questioned anything the military or police asked for was regarded as unpatriotic and on the wrong side in the War On Terrorism.

At this point, I am starting to think that these LEO’s do not give a damned if we plebs hate them. They have the force of the law (crooked judges, their “brothers-in-blue”) to back up any BS they might come up with-real or imagined. What is the public going to do? Probably nothing. However, I cannot help but think that one day there will be a straw to break the camel’s back. An an innocent person is going to get pulled over, endures this kind of treatment (for nothing), and simply shoots back first. But THEY will be the “bad guy” for defending themselves against a tyrant that would make the Stasi, and the NKVD/ KGB/ FSB look proud.
That is why when back in the day I would hear “conservatives” defend the cops that beat up Rodney King and it would piss me off to no end. Yes, Rodney King had a criminal record and was not what would be described as an “upstanding citizen” (a term which more and more describes a bootlicker), but he in no way deserved what was done to him. I also understood the anger that was felt in the aftermath of their acquittal by a cop-friendly jury, although the subsequent riots were counterproductive at best.
This story should be shared with any “back the blue” friends and relatives you may have, and they should be firmly asked if they support this kind of thing.

The “Rodney King” riots, which certainly weren’t HIS fault, did everything to undermine any serious and objective discussion of Police Brutality. It became a race-baiting issue, even though far more whites than blacks are the victims of crimes perpetrated under “Color of Authority “.

Some quick legal research: The claim of an open gate is from Coyle. USFWS officers do have statutory authority outside of federal lands, to investigate violatons pertaining to their subject matter area, and have authority to arrest for any violation of any law if the offense is committed in their presence and they witness it.
The Tasering, however, is the big one. With no clear probable cause, with no clear justification for use of force, under Arizona law, the tasering and subsequent bodily damage caused by ignition near fuel pumps would be considered aggravated assault.
the Taser use is definitely a violaton of strict USFWS guidelines for safe deployment.
Also, the Supreme Court has ruled that physical force is a form of seizure, under the Fourth Amendment. At the very least, absent any active resistence from the citizen or any other legal justification for use of force, once the taser prongs hit the citizen, this could become a massive 4th Amendement violaton.
So, we have two main legal issues: was the following and demand for ID part of the original investigation? And, separately, was the use of force justifiable and will Arizona prosecute this officer? If the use of force is eventually found to have been not justifiable, that leaves this officer open to alot of liability, both criminal and civil.
But this incident, like others, shows its never good policy to argue with officers.
Just be calm, cool, assert your rights, then remain silent.
Comply with their orders, make it clear you are invoking your right to remain silent and your right to have your attorney present during questioning. “Officer, I am invoking my right have an attorney present before answering any questions. I do not consent to any searches. I am invoking my right to remain silent and I will not answer any questions”
Then comply. Physical or verbal resistance is stupid. You will always lose when you argue with a cop.
If the recording becomes a matter of investigation, we always want to appear to be the calm, reasonable one.
What is immediately noticeable in this comment is immediately it heavy – handedly pulls the reader back onto the plantation, by confidently assuming that no one questions or desires to abolish altogether the system itself, but rather wishes to merely tweak it. “Act as if”, I believe its called. The reader is then offered hope and assurances with examples of possible remedies within the system framework, and also encouraged to have the strength to accept what ‘cannot be changed.’

I did not watch the video (I want to sleep tonight), but if the victim had a chance to put his tormentor in the ground while out in the wild like a rabid animal should be, with no one around, he should have done it then in self defense. Then carried on with his life with a clear conscience.

I too would like to know if you have ever had any interaction with law enforcement, and if so, how rather than in weakness prostrating yourself, you stood strong and taught the government tyrants the error of their ways? Have you ever had to use lethal force when resisting? What was the outcome?
I’m not asking for a translation; I’m asking for answers. (I know you don’t owe me anything.)
I treat people with kindness and expect the same in return. All men are flesh and blood and flawed. I try to remember that. With respect to official encounters, I have experienced a very short segment of the gradient that exists between “slightly annoying me” and “trying to kill me”. Not being a psychopath, I have, so far, reasonably made the necessary distinctions and successfully navigated my way through this life mostly unscathed, with dignity and self-respect intact.
Many civil rights lawyers preach your first task is to survive the encounter and secondary to give your lawyer something to work with in court.
It does no good to argue and be belligerent, you will lose to the criminals with badges and they absolutely believe that dead men tell no tales. If you resist you have to fight like hell to win.

Qualified immunity gives criminals in blue even more rights than that of the ordinary mundane citizen.

Its a good read that weaves a decent story with history, law, defense, and other necessary scenarios that can be used to tame a rogue government. When this book was first published, sellers were routinely harassed by FBI, DEA, and other federal agency types because of its somewhat volatile and provocative nature. Original hard copies are going for hundreds of dollars on ebay and other websites. Although approximately 800 pages, I couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting.

On public land, if the gate isnt locked, or clearly signed, it is accessible to the public. I’ve spent a whole lot of time on forest service and BLM land and if here is a gate in your way, you open it and close it after you.

Arizona can’t prosecute a Federal Law Enforcement officer, but the US Attorney can.

It begs the question of who left the gate open and was there any visible signage banning entry?
Since the victim left when asked to leave and was subsequently injured by the enforcer I suspect there might be some grounds to sue over. I highly doubt the victim will get a real apology though.
It’s important to understand this point. If the gate is open, there are no signs or a map that indicates the gate is supposed to maybe seasonally closed then it’s open public land.
The key moment would be to have on body cam (and your cell phone to preclude “technical issues”) jerk wad throws his weight around threatening trespass only occurs when you refuse to leave.
You aren’t trespassing until you’re aware of it and make an action, either ignoring the sign or refusing when asked or commanded.
That’s when you have to stay calm, assert your rights, maybe even tolerate being detained. Which if you followed the steps and did not refuse to leave means you have a good chance to win in court later.

The man acted reasonably; when the cop told him to leave, he left. That ought to have been the end of it. But the cop just had to make an issue of it. He’s the type who beats his wife/kids. A bully. An armed and badged bully who has the authoritah of the state backing him up.
It’s plausible he wasn’t supposed to be where he was but the legal version of trespassing never occurred because he just left when told to leave. It’s so simple a caveman could understand, which is why a hut, hut, hut bootlicking AGW can’t. The ACLU understands this, every civil rights lawyer understands this. It’s foundational to their protests. You can go anywhere you want up to the point there’s a “No Trespassing” sign or when the property owner there to say “Please leave”.
It’s an affront that the U.S. Government “owns” lands via BLM, USFS, USFW, NPS, etc and makes the claim they have authority to “manage” it for the public “owners” by telling us what we can and can’t do on “public land”.
The rules for trespass aren’t special for them. When Ranger Bob says you have to go then probably should move on unless you know absolutely you’re in the right and are ready for the interaction to potentially end up violent. Every single interactions with AGW have the possibility to end in cuffs or gunfire from them and it’s good to remember this when making choices. You may very well decide this is the time and place still. Just do it with eyes wide open.

I lift. Very few dudes – especially dudes well into their 40s – can hulk up like that without ‘roids. Look at NFL players back in the ’60s and even into the ’70s, before ‘roids became a common thing. The guys were big. But not Freaks of Nature big. Even OJ was only about 210 during his peak years.
I’ve been lifting since ’86. Pro athletes were far more muscular and much leaner in the 90s, the physical pinnacle of Americans. Skill position football players and NBA players often had bodybuilder physiques then. The physiques of Terrell Davis, Terrell Owens, Scottie Pippen, Shawn Kemp were typical. Look at Penny Hardaway and Shaq in Blue Chips with Nick Nolte. Very muscular, very lean.
NFL and NBA players today have three-dot torsos and they are smooth. Unlike 90s players, you cannot tell from looking at them that they are elite-level athletes. They are weaker as well.
Television and movies tell the same story. Look at the Steve Harvey Show cast vs the Abbot Elementary cast. Look at the brother in Just One of the Guys. Look at Spiccoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Skinny and muscular was very typical for white boys back then. The ecto-mesomorphic physique was common.
I noticed that America inexplicably stopped producing the heavyweight champions in boxing and MMA in the early 2000s, after over a century of dominance. Observe SWAT teams who are all tatted up and on steroids who cannot read the address on a warrant properly and end up hitting the wrong house, often with disastrous results. This happens more often than most people think. They claim that “dynamic entry” tactics, smashing and destroying everything in sight is from an “adrenaline rush” and not steroid use (yeah right).
“Qualified immunity” and other “carve-outs” are but two of many “laws” that absolve cops of actions resulting from their inherent stupidity and steroid use.
OJ , like many running backs, had that explosive speed that extra muscle mass would have inhibited. He was actually big for a running backmof his time. He also was great at making receptions coming out of the backfired. But most linebacker were no bigger than he, and defensive backs usually a bit smaller. He didn’t NEED today’s “ROIDS”.
