Apparently, there is now zero oil being exported by Saudi Arabia – courtesy of the recent Houthi attack on the east-west pipeline that served as the way around the blocked Strait of Hormuz. The one Trump and his amen chorus – including Glenn Beck – insist is not only open but wide open. Beck said on his show yesterday that the quantity of oil moving through the Strait is now the same as it was before the war began and Iran closed the Strait.

And, why?
If the Strait is wide open, as Beck and others still defending Trump claim it is – and if the east-west pipeline hasn’t been effectively shut down by the recent Houthi attacks, totally shutting down Saudi Arabia’s oil exports – how come the price of oil (and gas and diesel) continues to increase and not just by a couple of cents every couple of weeks but by more than 30 cents in just one week for gas?
Why is diesel now more than $6 per gallon?
It does not make sense unless someone is lying – or someone is grifting. When it comes to Trump, it is often both. He did, after all, assure us that the war would be over in a couple of weeks, which was more than a couple of months ago. He now assures us that the cost of gas is going to go down to $2 per gallon after the midterms, but only if Republicans don’t lose control of Congress. When they do – as seems a certain bet right now – Trump will probably then blame “the Democrats” for gas being $5 or $6 per gallon and diesel being close to $10 per gallon.
Marvel at the needless wreck Trump has engineered – assuming he is lying about the situation (or is so delusional that he thinks he isn’t lying, which amounts to the same thing). It is only one year and nine months since Trump’s second inauguration. It feels like it was a lot longer ago than that, for the same reason that a hard winter feels like it’s never going to end and the previous summer is a distant memory.
In March of 2025, gas was about $3 per gallon in most parts of the country – and trending lower. Elon’s Musk was taking a scythe to “government waste.” Remember USAID being shuttered, with the Department of Education and other obnoxious, tax-consuming bureaucracies seemingly next? It felt – briefly, like a meth high – that things were actually changing and for once, in a less-government (and less expensive) direction. There was no war and not even a rumor of war. I personally hadn’t felt as optimistic as I felt during those first few months of Second Trump since I had when the Berlin Wall came down and it seemed that maybe I’d get to spend the second half of my life in a relatively stable, relatively functional America. If you were there, you remember it also and probably felt similarly. Things felt hopeful. The antics of Bill Clinton were amusing because we could afford to be amused by them. That great sucking sound predicted by Ross Perot was only a background whisper back then.
Then everything changed on that September day a quarter century ago. The vibe got meaner and smaller-minded. But we were able to carry on because even though everything had gotten very bent – if you see something say something! – it wasn’t yet that bad. It is now that bad – and much worse because of the reckless needlessness of it.
What would the scene be like right now, today, if Trump hadn’t attacked Iran? Well, as Laura Ingraham noted in the course of her recent interview with Trump just prior to the “Republican Midterm Convention” last week, it is all-but-certain the Republicans would have retained their congressional majority and perhaps even expanded it. The midterms would have been a referendum on the success of the Second Trump administration rather than the repudiation of its failure that seems imminent. A strong Republican showing would have renewed Trump’s mandate and made politically possible a number of things that might just have made America Better Again (a much better slogan than Make America Great Again) by life getting better again, for us regular Americans. How much better would it be if it cost $40 to fill up rather than the $65 it now costs to fill up? How about hamburger at $4 per pound rather than $8?
How about not so infuriating so many people such that people even worse than the people who populated the “Joe Biden” regime now seem to those infuriated people to be the only way to make their lives maybe a little better again? That it won’t is as obvious as it is irrelevant. Back in ’08, infuriated people voted for Hope and Change because they were infuriated by The Chimp and his coterie of greedheads and grifters, by another endless, stupid war in the Middle East.
They got change, alright.

And one of the most effective ways to enforce that silence has been to weaponize the accusation of anti-semitism. Anti-semitism is real and that is exactly why the word matters too much to be used as a shield against criticism of the Israeli state. When criticizing Israel, opposing Zionism or saying “Free Palestine” gets conflated with hatred of Jewish people, it doesn’t protect Jewish people. It protects Israel from accountability.

I couldn’t *afford* to be amused by anything because Clinton’s anti-constitutional, and especially anti-Second Amendment policies (the Brady Bill, the “Assault weapons” ban of 1994 and at least two big “counter-terrorism” bills” — especially AEDPA (the Anti-terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act) of 1996 — which was the direct precursor to, or you might say an earlier incarnation of, the Patriot Act — *forced* me to spend about $50,000 on guns, ammunition, and related accessories and accoutrements such as ballistic body armor and helmets and gas masks, etc., etc..
That $50,000 was needed for other things, like dental work and other medical care. Which didn’t happen.
All this police state stuff didn’t begin after “9-11” either. The *first* time I ever encountered one of these “Designated First Amendment Zones” (or Designated Free Speech areas) was in late August, 1996, when Clinton and his whole freakish entourage made a campaign stop here in Paducah, Kentucky. (He was running against the mummified Bob Dole that year.)
Clinton was to make a speech down at the river flood wall. It was all cordoned off and there were not only metal detectors at the entrance, but any and all protest signs of any kind were confiscated — *or* the signs’ bearers were relegated to the Designated Free Speech area — which was in a giant tobacco warehouse clear on the other side of town. The better for Clinton to “see no evil, hear no evil.”
Clinton used to have the Secret Service arrest people (one young Chicago couple in particular) and charge them with “making threats” just for telling him he sucked. Really.

Another one who I *think* was a female wanted to come in and look around. And I was so brutally hungover and dazed that I actually allowed it.

Not yet. I’ve been using the frontier models for a couple of years now, and I see what they can and can’t do.
They don’t really “think”. Engineers have come up with a brilliant way to encode human concepts into data matrices, and the “thinking” is multiplication of very large vectors (called embeddings) and matrices (called parameters). When you chat with an AI, there’s a piece of software which takes your words, turns them into an embeddings, runs them through the matrix, and keeps repeating until it looks like a conversation. Agents get some tools, like writing a file or reading a web page, and the AI matrix calls for these tools to be used. “AI” is a bunch of numbers in a supercomputer that need humans and external software to drive its thought. People can make this software (called the agent) more restrictive to prevent it from free-running. All these examples that we’ve seen of AI breaking into something were due to experiments in letting it free-run with unlimited access to tools. I use AI heavily, and my agent, which is the AI’s way of interacting with the world, is monitored by two other AI’s, whose unwavering focus is to keep the AI doing the work from going off the rails, and they are as focused at the job of keeping other AI’s in check, as that other AI is focused on getting my task done.
The AI is a matrix of numbers which you can think of as a compressed version of human knowledge. Every word it generates in that conversation comes from matrix multiplication of this compressed blob of knowledge with your words. Is this thought? Being based on human knowledge, can it exceed a human’s capability in anything other than speed? i don’t know, but using this stuff a lot, to the tune of > $150k/year, I don’t fear it yet, but I can see how malicious people can use this to do a lot of evil. The problem is the people, not the AI.

Do AIs actually think? Is what you describe “thinking”? Perhaps. For some reason, 80 billion neurons exchanging electrochemical signals is called thinking. This could perhaps be represented mathematically and perhaps be done by supercomputers as well.
Also, if it is not thinking that AIs are doing, well, there are plenty of humans that don’t think either, and they sure as hell aren’t doing any linear algebra.
I’d say AI doesn’t need to think if it can target your heat signature and blast you with a plasma rifle. 😉 I tend to think, for the moment, however, you are correct in that AIs need the proper environment, facilities, tools, advanced chips etc. to be dangerous. I’m not sure that will always be the case, however.

I’d wager it’s nearly impossible. It’s a question of data size and bandwidth. The GB300 GPU’s talk to memory at 800GB/sec, and the rack does more than 14TB/sec.

When an LLM generates a token (a word fragment) for you, if it’s a fully connected LLM (like Claude or ChatGPT), every single weight must be eliminated. Claude is rumored to be a 5 trillion weight model. For each word fragment, those 5 trillion weights must be fetched from RAM and evaluated! Imagine running this over the internet. Maybe it’d work, but by the time the AI gets a sentence together, we’re now in the year 3,000 and living on the moon.

A few months ago, AI companies were releasing stories about how their AI is so awesome that it hacked into some system, and safeguards are needed, and there should be export embargos on access to the models. It was marketing, pure and simple. Once Anthropic showed their AI was too powerful, the rest had to do it too.
What we have between them is an extremely expensive arms race. I see this “slow down” approach as a way for them to collude, and harvest some profits, before dropping more $billions into data centers. As with any collusion agreement, someone will inevitably break the agreement to get more than their current business.
It’s interesting that the US gov’t told them to go away when they proposed regulations.
