Reader Question: Too Many HiLuxes?

Heres’ the latest reader question, along with my reply!

Larry asks:

Why do so many Americans still live in ANTI-Hi-Lux Land, when they could easily move to a Land of Plenty of Hi-Lux? I did that 20 years ago. But hardly anybody followed me out. I still don’t understand that. Twenty years of insanity all around them, but very few people have left the USA. So simple: Just go to the Southern border and keep going South, and from there on to somewhere else, anywhere else. With so much craziness throughout American life now, why aren’t real Americans moving somewhere else, where not only can they easily buy a Hi-Lux, but everything else in daily life offers a similar level of individual freedom?

My reply: I think I know why. Put another way, I think I understand now – what I did not understand when I was a kid in high school and read about what was going on in Germany in the ’30s (and in Russia, in the early 1900s). Were people blind? Didn’t they see what was obviously coming? But – because I was young – I didn’t yet understand that when you’re no longer young, you are invested in where you are. You have spent your youth working to build a life; you have family and friends and all the familiar things. These are hard to leave for a new life in a totally unfamiliar place, where you may also have to start over in mid-life. So you stay put and hope for the best.

And I think that is how you understand it.

  1. That investment is a huge part of it. Even the language you speak is part of that huge investment, but there is more:

I’ve been running away from large enclaves of very stupid people my whole life, and for the most part, it’s been successful. But it means repeatedly running away as the problems expand their territory. Eventually, it becomes too costly to move, due to investment, *and*, more to the point:

There’s no where left to run to. Anywhere you can go.. maybe you’ll find a Hylux today, but what about tomorrow? This isn’t a US problem, this is a global problem. Unless you’ve got a way off the globe, or you think you don’t have much time left, you are *GOING* to have to take a stand eventually.

Find the best place you can, and *invest*: Build up the home court advantage, dig in, and study Viet Namese defensive technology.

I do not envy those who have recently moved to a place that will see them as foreigners who talk and think funny, when the food runs out.
