I received an email from an armed government worker in response to my column about Trap Door Spiders that I thought was interesting and so publish it for that reason, along with my reply:

To the point, I suppose you’d consider the obviously paid-for rioters in LA as “peaceful.” I’m as much a Libertarian as you and so the caveat that I’m a cop, excuse me, an armed government worker, might strike you as odd. Oh and I’m also a retired Marine to boot! Sorry again, I shouldn’t use the word “boot” lest it conjure up further images for you of jack-booted thugs. Not that I’m implying that you are one, but who might ever come to your aid should a lone buzz-cut he-she ever accost you while exiting your… Tesla… Prius? I just wonder if you’ve ever had to rely on anyone, say the police, for assistance? And another question: How would you categorize the rioters in LA? Would you call them “Peaceful Insurrectionists”?
I sometimes find your articles informative, even a little interesting. Your Wednesday article, however, is slop so to further indicate that you’re probably going to incite more government educated readers to question who you think your readers are – likely another pig or two – I will end this retort with one more question: Do you live in LA?
My reply: Where to begin?
Let’s start with this business about “speeding” and “tickets.” I have not gotten one recently, chiefly because I employ effective countermeasures. But that is neither here nor there. What is relevant is that “speeding” is a contrived offense that – as such – entails no harm done and for that reason “ticketing” people (that is, forcing them to hand over money to the government) is criminal in that you are harming people who have not harmed anyone. The same goes for other such things. As for example the “ticket” my girlfriend got recently because her car’s government required ear tag – state “safety” inspection sticker – was out of date. Her car is in good working order. I know because I make sure that it is. But this dude with a government badge and gun followed her, “pulled her over” – that is, used the implied threat conveyed by his wig wag lights to coerce her to “pull over” – and handed her a “ticket” that cost her $100 plus court costs over … what, again?
You are enforcing the law, I know. That is not the same thing as doing the right (or wrong) thing and I hope you will give that some thought.
It does strike me as odd that you would claim to be a Libertarian and yet chose to work as a law enforcer; that is, a government enforcer. I hope you’ll give some thought to that as well. Peacekeeping is honorable work. But much of law enforcement has nothing to do with that and much that is at odds with it. This is self-evidently true. You are thus placed in the position of not enforcing the law – i.e., not doing your job – when you know that whatever “the law” says is not malum in se but merely malum prohibitum – or doing it just because it is “the law,” in which case you become a nihilist. I was just following orders. . .

Well, I don’t drive a Tesla or a Prius – but that is beside the point. I do not ask for you to come to my aid because I do not require it. Note the italics. I believe in voluntary arrangements. You seem to believe in coercive ones. A plumber comes to my house if I call him and no one is forced to pay him. Think about that. Also: I live in a rural area and when seconds count, a cop is at least 15-30 minutes away. I look out for myself. I am not claiming to be a tough guy. I am saying I look out for myself. Mark the distinction. You appear to think us “civilians” are helpless and afraid; that we cower in fear and look upon cops as “heroes” who will save us. We don’t. No offense meant. We just consider you to be enforcers of the law who care about that – and your “safety” – primarily.
That’s why we feel uneasy when we see one of you in the rearview or anywhere else.
In closing, I do not consider rioters peaceful. Nor do I live in LA. I choose not to live in a city where it is a “crime” for decent people to be armed and to protect themselves against rioters and other actual criminals.
You are probably not a bad guy and mean well. I do not mean to insult you. I merely attempt to explain why so many people like me – who are not criminals in the proper sense because we don’t harm other people and are just trying to go about our peaceful business and want nothing more than to be left in peace – are leery when they see an armed government worker and do their best to avoid their presence as well as their attentions.
It’s something I hope you will think about.

This guy had too much emotional appeal in the email. I did the same job, when there is emotional appeal brought into an argument there is usually something else going on to look into. That said, I don’t ever go around saying I protected the public. Maybe I did with presence as a deterrent as private security also does. Or the times I spent several shifts hunting the overnight burglar or catalytic converter thieves, or checking the auto dealer lots at 3AM. That was a small percentage of my days in a small town. Most interactions they had me doing on the force were looking for reasons to harass people. And when you did get something ‘good,’ it was also a non moral hazard. For example- I pulled over a lady for doing 50 in a 35. Not a big deal, worthy of a warning- but then she had open weed and a half smoked blunt in the car. I ask if I can search the car-she says yes for some reason. Then I find open liquor under the passenger seat, then a loaded gun in the trunk. Being Illinois, she needs a FOID card which she didn’t have. She was barred because of… carrying a gun without a FOID. Lady you’re killing me here! Now we are talking misdemeanor charges and arrest for the marijuana, alcohol, and gun. And for what? She was not apparently impaired by marijuana or alcohol, all the gun issues are non issues in other states. No harm to herself or others based on facts. Just laws violated. Unfortunately I have more stories like that than positive things like the time I saved a woman from an overdose with Narcan, or caught a loose bird in a church, or caught the grocery store thief as he was trying to escape, or talking down the neighborhood Karen. Many functions are just enforcement to justify budgets and get income for stats. Its a town business. Oh, lets bring this arrestee to the station so we can get the $400 admin tow charge for the town instead of letting them go with papers on the street- which we could for some misdemeanor charges. I’d say less than 20% of the time with some exceptions like major riots, you are actually going against criminals who do harm to persons or property.
I drove up to Atlanta last weekend to pick up some furniture. It never fails that all the police from the small towns along I-85 are out on the highway revenuing. Traffic slowed down every time we passed one sitting on the side of the road. That bunched everyone up and made the whole situation unsafe.
On the way back, a Coweta County, Georgia deputy pulled onto the road from his revenuing spot and blew past traffic on the hard shoulder. No lights, no siren. He got off at the next exit and just pulled into a gas station. No hint of an emergency response.
Yep, thats Jawja. #1 most likely state to get pulled over in. Gotta stop all those drugs from Florida dont ya know?

I agree. I remember watching an ancient Eustace Mullins video describing who the police actually work for – the central bankers. Ever wonder why many cops are so stupid? The steroids they take inhibit rational thinking as well as making one more aggressive, to the point of irrational thinking and stupidity.
Of course the “laws” are set up to absolve them of responsibility for their actions. Police departments do not test for steroids.
Observe SWAT teams who are all tatted up and on steroids who cannot read the address on a warrant properly and end up hitting the wrong house, often with disastrous results. They claim that “dynamic entry” tactics, smashing and destroying everything in sight is from an “adrenaline rush” and not steroid use (yeah right).
“Qualified immunity” and other “carve-outs” are but two of many “laws” that absolve cops of actions resulting from their inherent stupidity and steroid use.
I often think that someone is going to load up a house with explosives, call it in to be swatted, and blow it to kingdom come. I am sure someone, maybe down in Mehico, has already done this. The point is that if you are kicking in other people’s doors then eventually you will earn your just desserts.

Ah, the “who are you going to call if someone attacks you?” response endemic to all pensioned terrorists.
Well, if I am attacked, like let’s say as Joe Lozito was on the NYC subway by “Mad Maks Gelman,” (a spree or is it serial killer?) who had already killed four people, carjacked and gravely injured at least three more, I know what to do.
Poor Joe who had not one but two “heroic” NYPD cops cowering in the subway conductor’s booth feet away as a madman pulled an 8″ kitchen knife and proceeded to treat Lozito’s head like an overripe melon. Despite lowly “civvies,” you know police speak for those not in their club, identifying the psycho to them, who was by then on the front-page of every newspaper and telling them “you have Mad Maks on the train” – to which they locked themselves in with the conductor. They did this despite having firearms, the capacity to reload those firearms and the further capacity to call upon more of their brothers with similar firearms along with qualified immunity to use them.
When Mad Maks began banging on the conductor’s locked door with the two heroes safely locked behind it – claiming “open up Official Police Business” to which the two armed heroes remained safely behind the locked metal door. When Mad Mak’s attempt to highjack the train failed, he turned to the overripe melon of Mr. Lozito’s head with his concealed butcher knife. The two heroes remained safely bunkered in their metal refuge.
As Mr. Lozito bled out and realized no help was coming, he mustered every ounce of pain, rage and terror induced adrenaline to beat the sh!t out of his attacker despite massive blood loss and pin him to the ground. At that point the heroic police emerged from their bunker to “take it from here”. The officers received the keys to the city by the Mayor for Life Bloomberg, Mr. Lozito received over 100 stitches and weeks in recovery.
Mr. Lozito having read the police slogan “to serve and protect” believed the words to be some written contract that was violated lest he sued. To his chagrin, and all of ours – the judge ruled in Lozito Vs New York, NYPD, Etc.. that the “police have no duty to protect any individual citizen” even if that “civvie” is being butchered alive by a psycho feet away from them.
That is the lesson for all of us to heed. And a nice reply to the standard “who are you going to call?” line.
The police are actually a hindrance to a safe public and homeowner as their full powers will come to bear against anyone “taking the law into their own hands” – in essence if you are to survive such an encounter with a psycho, the state will come for you. One must have the mindset of a mafiosi.
My 1950’s era Brooklyn Gangster father used to say “the police aren’t for people like us, they are for the legitimate people and I sure feel bad for them because they really got no one”. Funny how all of us are “people like us” now – forced to adapt to mafiosi methodology in this bravest of brave new worlds foisted upon us in an age of total surveillance but willful blindness to our victimhood. Or is it abject amusement and celebration of our powerlessness? The honest man has two enemies in this world, much like a mafiosi – the criminals and the government. We must think like a smart criminal, avoiding encumbrances with both.
Mad Maks is very personal to me because I literally was targeted to be his first victim a few weeks before he made the news. While waiting for a traffic light to change, Mad Maks emerged from a store across the street from where I was. My sixth sense immediately kicked in for some reason. I knew I had a very bad problem and immediately closed my always open windows and made sure my doors were locked while he was still just leaving the store. I never met or saw this man before. He then approached my car and tried to get me to open my window – looking into his eyes. I saw raving insanity and knew I wanted nothing of what he might be selling. I smiled, shook my head No thank you and stared ahead waiting for the light to change. To which he flew into a rage and jumped in front of my car furiously pointing at me. He then got into the car he was driving that was parked up on the sidewalk and slammed on the gas to block me from moving. With someone behind me, there was nothing I could do but try to go around him. But he matched every move I made until caught in the middle of the intersection when the light changed again. The same happened at the next intersection – I was going to the supermarket several blocks away. I saw his reflection in his rear view mirror – he was deranged. His eyes were rolling in his head and he was spitting words at his windshield looking back at me in his mirror.
I was almost waiting for him to jump out of the car and come at me again and was readying myself to do something very out of character for me after not having been in a fistfight since Sophomore year in high school 20 years earlier. Ultimately, I had a turn I could make to get away from him and took it. I never understood why so many men in Brooklyn always kept a baseball bat under their car seat until that day. I never was one to go looking for trouble and wanted nothing to do with violence. Since NYC has some of the most outrageous anti-Second amendment laws, I cannot legally carry suitable methods of self defense and must improvise. A tire iron is a perfectly legal object to have in a car and makes a good makeshift weapon in an emergency assuming your attacker heeds the antigun laws – if not well…
I thought about calling the police that day, but after having my car broken into under a security camera in a well lit parking lot and my home broken into that was recorded and fingerprints along with a written threat left behind – only to be told by that same precinct “that there was nothing they could do” not even look at security camera footage – I decided against calling them as I would have them make me into a fool once again.
I often wondered had my previous dealings with that precinct not had been as unproductive and if I would have called 911 whether four people would have lived instead of be murdered by a spree/serial killer.
Several years after his arrest, Mad Maks gave interviews for an A&E Series titled: My Serial Killer. He had a thing for Lexus cars, mine was a 1996 ES300. He talked about how he would go up to unsuspecting drivers and get them to lower their window and then proceed to “Stab them in the neck”. I know that is exactly what he had in store for me and wonder why anyone would have lowered their window for him. But hey, the lesson here is you are on your own.
‘On July 25, 2013, Judge Margaret Chan dismissed Lozito’s suit, stating that while Lozito’s account of the attack rang true and appeared “highly credible”, Chan agreed that police had “no special duty” to protect Lozito.’
This pretty much sums it up. There don’t exist to protect and serve _us_.
New York City is the epitome of citizen disarmament whose residents have been taking it for a very long time…and apparently liking it.
Since the Sullivan Laws were enacted, enabling the most extreme and restrictive limits on the acquisition and uses of firearms, the Constitutional right to defend one’s self and others has been almost totally obliterated.
Once restricted to handguns, the laws have been extended to rifles and shotguns, all of (what were supposed to be “registered”) demanding that they either be confiscated or taken out of NYC.
I’ll bet that those people who voluntarily turned in their weapons added to NYC police officers’ extensive gun collections.
NYC prosecutors relish the thought of prosecuting those who legally defend themselves, even a “rolled up newspaper” is considered to be an illegal “weapon”.
The honest citizen is the easiest person to charge and convict.
If you defend yourself successfully against a criminal without NYC police being involved, you WILL be prosecuted.
Witness Daniel Penny who was being viciously prosecuted for saving fellow subway passengers from mentally ill Jordan Neely who had been harassing and threatening subway passengers for decades. Thankfully he was acquitted of all charges.
The case of the bodega owner, Jose Alba who successfully thwarted a knife attack, his attacker succumbing to his injuries, was under indictment and prosecution for murder until a groundswell of opposition forced the prosecutor to back off on prosecuting him.
The case of Bernie Goetz, the subway rider who thwarted being robbed by dispatching three of his attackers to the “hospital”. Subway crimes dropped dramatically after that act. If Goetz had kept his mouth shut, no one would have been the wiser.
What kind of society prosecutes the victim of a crime?
It happens in NYC all the time.
You see, the approximately 36,000 NYC police officers constitute a powerful lobby and do not want to give up their monopoly on the use of force.
They cannot have their monopoly on the use of force jeopardized by allowing honest citizens to provide for their own self-defense by “taking the law into their own hands”.
Despite having relatives who live in NYC, I will not visit or enter NYC. This also applies to New Jersey.
My cousin’s son who was like a surrogate son to me for many years was very proud of the Mossberg shotgun he purchased for his condominium in Suffolk County. I have been around guns my whole life – some were even legal (see 1950’s era Brooklyn Gangster father). I am not amazed by them, they are tools that carry tremendous power to make instantaneous life changes.
I said to the kid “Okay, you got that – now what?” He responded “Well if I ever have a problem”… “Yeah” I said. “Then What?” – “I’ll call the police, I have friends that are cops” –
Wrong I told him – Once you pull that out and use it, you have no friends. No cop is your friend, no prosecutor nor any judge. You are a young White guy who in all likelihood would have just wasted a diversity. There will be an ambitious prosecutor who is likely diverse and wants to make a career for themselves aggressively prosecuting a White man who wasted a diversity. The media will crucify you, they will paint you as a monster. Fellow diversities will show up at your house and at every court hearing to push for your lifetime incarceration. The judge and jury will likely be fellow diverseness and will all be against you.
The legal defense costs for your case will bankrupt you and your family if by some miracle you are acquitted, if not you are going to state prison for wasting diversity. The prisons are filled with diversity that would love a shot at a White boy who wasted their brother.
If you ever have to pull that weapon, you had better think of the consequences of everything that follows. I am not telling you to not defend yourself and your family – but you better be crystal clear of what the consequences are. And if at all possible avoid any government investigations – perhaps even going so far as to acquaint yourself with a sawzall and a very, very unpleasant task. A shotgun blast in a condominium development is going to be heard though – so I am not sure how you could clean up such a mess yourself.

I would like to add that something that is rarely mentioned in self-defense classes involving firearms and deadly force is the ultimate goal is NOT to “kill the bad guy” but to STOP THE THREAT–nothing more.
If you are in such a situation, NEVER EVER state that you needed to “kill the bad guy” but only to STOP THE THREAT and say no more. You must attempt to render first-aid in such a situation. Retain legal counsel and hopefully you will be able to get out of the situation relatively unscathed. My opinion, after 54 years of life, is that AGWs are worthless, at best. Nearly every interaction with an AGW has been negative and *NOT ONCE* have they *EVER* improved a situation in *any* interaction with them *IN MY ENTIRE LIFE*. I have a couple of experiences that illustrate this very well.
Experience 1: We had horses stolen by an escaped prisoner. The sheriff’s department did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING except write a report. We got the horses back with help of other ranchers and by tracking (on horseback) the escapee ourselves.
The 2nd incident occurred 12 years ago. A guy with criminal history turned his horses loose on our land without our permission. He then claimed we stole one of his horses when we moved our horses away to a different property. An AGW harassed us without evidence of wrongdoing and finally gave up AFTER we sued the deputy for severely injuring a horse on private property, which he entered without a warrant. (That same AGW was promoted to “lieutenant” 4 years ago. He is, right now, facing felony charges for hazing and harassing other AGWs after his promotion.)
All other official interactions with AGWs have been negative or, at best, neutral. I have one relative that is now a retired AGW and have had a few friends over the years that were AGWs (they have since left the employ of government).
I can say definitively that (even my friends and relative did this) the only thing they protect and serve is their own egos. I have come to know that most AGWs are cowards, almost all of them have below average intelligence, and many of them are on steroids or other drugs. (I would estimate between 30-50% in most parts of my home state are on steroids. I would guess it is higher in some other places.)

Here at the house, I have a couple of decades plus of military experience. I have tools to dig in or out of natural disasters. I have extinguishers and hoses. I have a field trauma kit and bandages. I have weapons both melee and firearm. I know how to use them. I know how to trench, support and revet. I understand the fire triangle and appropriate approaches. I understand breathing, bleeding and shock. I know how to detain, restrain and control. I have done all of these at least occasionally, professionally. I’ve stood on top of a collapsing levee in a flood. I’ve fought a structure fire from inside so we could get everyone out before the fire department showed up, which only took two minutes, but people can die that fast. I’ve had structures collapse while I was working on them. I’ve been in an aircraft that had a “mechanical” on approach and had to be repaired in-flight before landing. I’ve helped control a brush fire. I’ve hauled disabled vehicles out of ditches in sub-zero weather.
My ex wife has over a decade of service and some of the same training.
We have trained our young adult children.
My wife is a rancher who knows her way around a shotgun, livestock, sutures and tools, hurricanes and floods, and works in investigations professionally.
Our current house guest is another veteran.
This means if anything happens at the house, and last year we had a lightning strike, a tornado and a flood within 10 days’ we’re pretty well prepared.
Now, we’re probably better off than 95% of the households out there. The level of disaster that necessitates backup varies.
If we find it necessary to call 911, it means the party is in progress and it’s bad.
You will probably not be going home safe at the end of your shift.
And you know what? If it gets to that point, I really don’t give a shit. I don’t give a shit if you get smoked. I don’t give a shit if you fall under a tree. I don’t give a shit if you get shot at.
Because at that point, I’ve done everything I can with that same circumstance, and run out of resources.
If my concern was “you going home safe,” then I’d just fucking hunker down and die. Because I wouldn’t want that poor responder to endanger himself.
Except, that’s what I pay taxes for, and that’s what you signed up for. Just like I signed up to walk into a potential nuke war in Germany and hold off the Soviets, and did walk into the Middle East and prepare to take fire while keeping expensive equipment functioning so our shooters could keep shooting.
There’s not a single set of orders I got that said my primary job was to “Come home safe.” They said it was to “support the mission” or “complete the objective.” Coming home safe was the ideal outcome, but entirely secondary to “supporting” or “completing.” Nor, once that started, did I get a choice to quit. Once in, all in.
When that 80 year old lady smells smoke or hears a noise outside her first floor bedroom in the ghetto, she doesn’t care if you go home safe, either. She’s afraid she or the kids next door won’t wake up in the morning.
If I call, I expect your ass to show up, sober, trained, professional. I expect you to wade in with me or in place of me, and drag a child out of a hole, or out from a burning room, or actually stand up and block bullets from hitting said child, because by the time you get there, I’ll have already done all that. And there will be field dressings, chainsawed trees, buckets and empty brass scattered about.
I don’t want to hear some drunk and confused guy squirming on the ground playing “Simon Says” terrified you so much you had to blow him away. I don’t want to hear that some random guy 35 yards away who you had no actual information on , may have reached toward his waist band. Or that “the tree might fall any moment” or that “the smoke makes it hard to see.”
Near as I can tell, I don’t hear the smokejumpers, or the firefighters, or the disaster rescue people say such things.
But it’s all I ever hear from the cops. If you and your five girlfriends in body armor, with rifles, are that terrified of actually risking your life for the theoretically dangerous job you volunteered for and can quit any time, then please do quit.
You can get a job doing pest control and go home safe every night.
Until a bunch of fucking pussies with big tattoos, small dicks, body armor and guns blow you away for minding your own business.
Because what you’re telling me with that statement is, your only concern is cashing a check. That’s fine. But if that’s your concern, don’t pretend you’re serving the public. If your plan is “shoot first, shoot later, shoot some more, then if anyone is still alive try to ask questions,” and bleat, “But I was afeard fer mah lahf!” you’re absolutely no better than the thugs you claim to oppose. All you are is another combatant in a turf war I don’t care about.
Since I know your primary concern is “being safe,” then I’ll do you the favor of not calling. Cash your welfare check, and try not to shoot me at a “courtesy” sobriety checkpoint for “twitching my eye “in a way that suggested range estimation.

The idea that the cops exist to “come to your aid” is one of the greatest lies ever told. As the Supreme Court ruled in Gonzalez vs. Castle Rock, the cops are NOT required to protect you and cannot be held liable if they fail to do so.
Cops exist to enforce the government’s monopoly on power in a given situation. When a deer hit me on my motorcycle, the cops did not “come to my aid.” VOLUNTEER firefighter/EMTs did. They were paid nothing. The cops at the scene were there to make sure I had a license, insurance, wasn’t drunk, wasn’t in possession of drugs, and to report the accident to the State. Had I been in violation of the government’s decrees, the cops would have placed me under arrest while the volunteer EMTs were “aiding” me.
As Eric rightly points out, many jurisdictions including LA forbid average citizens from possessing the arms necessary to “aid” themselves — yet the cops are not legally required to aid them, either. Should any honest citizen in LA “illegally” arm himself to defend against the FOREIGN rioters, you can bet the cops will forget all about THEM and arrest HIM riki-tik.
