People have generally taken sides (again) with regard to the shooting to death of that woman in Minneapolis last week – but the thing to understand is we’re all on one side now. It is the side of those who face summary execution by armed government workers if we “resist” in any way. This encompasses attempting to drive away, which is what the woman who was shot to death was trying to do.
“Conservatives” – many of whom manifest a dog-like adoration of armed government workers, which is hugely strange given they say the are leery of government – say the woman earned her death sentence because she attempted to drive away. It does not trouble them at all that the armed government worker could have – and actually did – move out of the way, thus ending any putative “threat” to his “safety.” The murdered woman bumped the AGW but he was never in any danger of being run over – and it is pretty clear the woman was not trying to run him over. If she had been, she would not have turned her wheels to the right. She would have driven straight ahead. 
She just wanted to get away. For failing to obey, in other words. This is the ultimate crime in any authoritarian system, as evidenced by how severely it is punished. Videos of armed government workers tackling, beating and shooting people who aren’t criminals – in the sense that whatever they were being initially pestered over was some petty statutory “offense” that entailed no harm done to anyone – abound. Here is one. A man is ordered to get down on the ground, now – IDF tactics – and beaten, over jaywalking. But his real crime was not obeying. How about a “turn signal violation”?
There are many such. Because so much has changed.
But when did it change? And why? 
It is hard to pin it down exactly, but it was sometime in the mid-1990s that the Hut! Hut! Hut! got normalized. We saw it on TeeeVeee – literally. The show COPS became a huge hit, normalizing and even fetishizing the Hut! Hut Hut! Around the same time, Randy Weaver and his 14-year-old son were executed – on their own property – for the crime of wanting to be left alone and “resisting” when they were not left alone. The “religious weirdos” – and so they were, but so what? – at the Branch Davidian compound were subjected to an armored assault with tanks by the feds, who didn’t just Hut! Hut! Hut! but literally immolated the group, including women and children.
It became “normal” to see this sort of thing. People became inured to seeing it. People got used to seeing cops suited up as if they were Delta Force operators. The “operators” were – and are – taught to regard the slightest act of recalcitrance as “resisting.” And to respond as if this constituted a “threat” to their “safety.”
The president and his minions approve that message. No hint of empathy. No expression of rueful sentiment that – just maybe – things got out of hand.
We are all coarsened by this. Humanity is diminished by this. The ICE goon who shot that woman could have just stepped aside – and did, by the way – and let the woman go. This is exactly what would have happened in America before the mid-1990s. Cops didn’t shoot at people who weren’t shooting at them.
Who were just trying to get away from them.
Instead, the ICE goon did what he has been trained to do and what government goons know they can do with likely impunity. The tragedy isn’t primarily that it was done. It is that it can – and will – be done to any of us because so many of us have accepted it being done to any of us.

If they are at all smart, they have been preparing for this and will do this. It appears that Iran made a huge strategic mistake by not acquiring at least a small arsenal of nuclear weapons. This seems to be the only defense against being endlessly bullied by the US and Israel. No one is messing with North Korea, which has a nuclear arsenal that can strike the US. The more the US and Israel engage in endless bombing of other countries, the stronger the incentive to acquire nuclear weapons as a defensive shield. As such, this endless bullying increases the likelihood of nuclear proliferation.
Although Russia may be a counter example to this. Russia has thousands of nuclear warheads, and yet both the US and Europe keep attacking it. Russia has enough fire power to destroy most of Europe and the US and yet European and American weapons are still attacking the Russian mainland. Our “leaders” seem to have gone crazy.

This was in the early 90’s in Dallas, TX. I have since been to multiple protests in Dallas, TX. I will never protest again. Why? Main reason commenting though is that apparently instead of fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, we were fielding assassination squads. I thought IDF had developed this assassination model, but apparently it was the Phoenix program which was modeled on the British counter-insurgency program in Malaysia (no doubt Israel has modernized and improved). The training, mindset, and lifestyle can’t be turned off just because you are fighting with your family/friends or your own citizenry (Israel police increasingly violent toward own protestors). Don’t know anything about the ICE officer involved, but could be suffering PTSD and also taking drugs (amphetamines/sleep aids/recreational/self medication). They are taught to react to preserve themselves and their team with deadly force not to think. Others have no experience and react like any new recruit first facing danger/stress. Many of these people may be on edge/uncomfortable with their job, do feel guilty after the fact, never get over what they should’ve done or should not have done, and end up either committing suicide or becoming drug/alcohol addicts. Some no doubt are not very bright or just plain assholes–but they are ARMED and probably with minimal/poor training.
I commend people who are protesting, but not sure they understand that they are risking their lives. Don’t think they would bait a trained/mad attack dog or their husband/brother/ son, but they vent and escalate until they panic and flee (terrorists use cars as lethal weapons) putting their lives in the hands of these guys who are probably just trying to do a job they need to support themselves or their family or thought would get them ahead. I attended tea party march at the capitol in 2009 where Obama had deployed soldiers armed with machine guns. The elderly woman I was with started asking one who looked like he was 17 whether or not he would shoot her. He wordlessly stared straight ahead while I looked at her like what are you trying to do get me killed? I thought Obama was to blame and I think Trump is to blame here: it’s his poor judgment. He should be charged with endangering the lives of Americans and he should pay the millions of dollars this family will get instead of their wife/mother. There’s nothing any of us can do for the dead woman or the schmuck who shot her.

I am highly critical of police interactions including violation of civil rights and use of force in interactions with the public. So, what does the law say about this situation?
There is both Minnesota statute and US Supreme Court case law that set the standards of police use of force when and to what level it can be used. For Minnesota statute I suggest this response from Washington Gun Law channel:

For Supreme Court case law there are at least (3) cases perhaps more that apply but let me mention (2): Graham V Connor-1989, Barnes V Felix-2025. Graham set the standards for determining if the use of force to be objectively reasonable by: severity of the crime, whether the suspect posed an immediate threat, and if they were actively resisting arrest or fleeing. In this case the ICE agents have effectively secured (2) of the (3) standards in that the women were fleeing and hit the agent with a motor vehicle which is use of deadly force. There could be an argument in favor towards the women that her crime of obstruction of a federal agent was likely either a misdemeanor or perhaps a level 3 felony, both without violence. I think any jury would rule that once she fled, once the vehicle struck the officer, he is legally free to use deadly force. Also, Graham allows consideration that this decision is made within a split second hence deference to the agent in this case.
In a recent SC ruling in Barnes, the court can review the totality of the situation in whether the use of force was justified or not. This case may play in favor towards the woman in that a civil attorney can argue that her crime did not rise to the level of violence of deadly force therefore a monetary judgement should be upheld. This would be an uphill case in that again, she struck the agent with her vehicle, and suing the feds is almost impossible. As for a criminal case, I don’t think Barnes will be applicable.

A dangerous slippery slope that has already been crossed is that of police officers being trained to regard the average citizen as the “enemy”.
Every military in the world depersonalizes (dehumanizes) the “enemy”. In a war footing this is a necessary part of combat–getting ordinarily non-violent people to attack the enemy without regard to his humanity.
Problems arise when these tactics are used by civilian police departments. Although military veterans can make excellent police officers, this “depersonalization” training that they received in the military is not reversed. In fact, in most police departments, this is seen as a “plus”. This results in unnecessary citizen “casualties” often with tragic results.
Add to that, the “israeli model” of policing is the norm for almost every American police department, trainers being sent to israel to “see how its done”, practicing on Palestinians. True “peacekeeping” has been replaced with “command and control” where the citizenry is “commanded” (ordered) to perform (comply) for the enforcers. Problems arise when conflicting commands are issued by multiple police officers. The murder of Daniel Shaver by Mesa Arizona police officer Philip Brailsford is a prime example. Not good…

I don’t think military veterans should be hired as civilian police unless the are former MPs. Military police receive much better training in de-escalation than their civilian counterparts so ideally suited to make the transition and especially to leadership positions. Something your father did not instill, and probably didn’t even deserve.

Some time ago, teenage employees of a Texas food establishment refused to serve local police officers. There was a large public and media “hue and cry” over these “men in blue” being “disrespected” by these “ungrateful teenagers”.

These Texas cops LOVED to roust teenagers, stopping them on pretexts (illegal), harassing them for anything and everything. A ticket could and would cost a teenage worker a week’s salary. Being continuously rousted by the cops “just because they could” fostered an unhealthy relationship between these “public servants” and local teenagers.
These teenage employees reacted in the only way they could–refusing to serve these rogue cops.
Police departments and individual officers need to “look in the mirror” and realize that their actions shape perceptions about them. One rogue cop is enough to taint the whole barrel.
Getting rid of “qualified immunity” and testing for steroid use would be a start, “qualified immunity” being a “get out of jail free” card, steroid use making cops stupid and irrational.

Here’s a video that appears to be from the camera worn by the ICE officer who shot and killed the woman. He wasn’t just standing around; he intentionally walks around her vehicle and steps in front of it as he (or possibly another officer) orders the driver to “get out of the ****ing car”. It was clear that the woman was not going to get out of the car, and that she was likely going to drive away, therefore the officer had plenty of time to get out of the way.
A few seconds before the shooting, the driver’s companion had insulted and belittled the shooter, likely enraging him: “You want to come at us? Go get yourself some lunch, big boy.” Contempt of Cop is capital offense, so somebody had to die.
The ICE officer had two options: 1) Move out of the way; or 2) Shoot the driver and then move out of the way. Of course he chose to shoot the driver first.

You’re right in the broader sense but this Minnesota ICE situation is not a good example.
The woman was aggressive to the officer and put herself in the situation intentionally. She was harassing the ICE officers for visual effect. She wanted them to react but they ignored her until she put herself in front of their cars. OK, fine. Punch them in the nose but don’t be surprised when they punch back.
ICE becoming Trump’s gestapo probably has a nugget of truth. If that’s the case, though, it wasn’t a decision he made one day. It’s the evolution of the militarizing of the police as you point out.
It’s complicated by the fact that emigration enforcement and foreign invasion are an area where the Constitution does enumerate a function of the Federal government. We can argue what that looks like and if ICE is really doing it or the extent of mission creep. But border control is at root Constitutional.
The problem I have with falling for the sympathy trap is that these situations are being set up and exploited by professional agi-prop organizations. If we assume the cops are trained and controlled elements we must also acknowledge that the anti-ICE protests are astroturf, possibly by the same groups. This sort of chaos is exactly what they wish to happen. It’s why they put old ladies and pastors at the front of protest lines. If it’s the obese neck beard getting pepper sprayed and arrested no one cares. But most of these “the suspect tried to kill me with the vehicle” are not like that at all. Most of them seem to be when the suspect moves the vehicle a little bit, or simply tries to drive away.
Cops are TRAINED to be trigger happy and shoot in such cases. We’re all terrorists in their minds, as if we were at a checkpoint in Iraq in 2004.

Yes, but this raises the question: What’s “legitimate”? Also, it is one thing to end up in “deep shit.” As in, getting arrested, etc. Summary execution is another thing.
What’s “legitimate” is arresting illegal aliens under the immigration laws duly passed by Congress.
I don’t like some of the ICE goon tactics, the tactical gear, and the masks. They’re definitely putting on an intimidation show. But in general terms, enforcing immigration law is legit. These lefty women were literally taking the side of foreign invaders against their own country.
If they wanted to protest, fine. The First Amendment allows that. They should have stood on the public sidewalk shouting and carrying signs. They should have written and lobbied Congress to change the laws.
But you simply can’t block cops with your vehicle and get out and get in their face in the middle of the public street without consequences.
As we know, Eric, you are critical of speed traps. Would you ever block a cop who had a motorist pulled over, block traffic, and get into his face in the middle of the street while he’s writing a ticket?
Of course not. And if you did that wouldn’t justify “execution,” but you’d be inviting a use of force against yourself where the outcome could potentially get out of control and you would absolutely lose, one way or the other.
YOU wouldn’t do that, and I wouldn’t. Because as much as we dislike the cops, we’re rational and intelligent.
But these women engaged in actions with no thought whatsoever to potential secondary or tertiary consequences, not only because they were hysterical and emotional and stupid, but because they thought they were privileged and untouchable by dint of being a) females and b) homosexuals.
It seems to me the difference in staged protest and real protest is distinct.

That is a great question. It speaks to your inner morality. If you see a person being assaulted do you stop and help?
Does it matter if the person is an obvious dirt bag or wearing a badge?
What if it’s the dirt bag assaulting the cop? Do you help. They’re both humans.
One of things you learn in force application is you can’t really know a situation. If you’re a CCW holder you may have been told or read about this. If you’ve been in the military, law school or police officer training you will know for sure.
You walk up and see two people fighting. You think you want to be Superman and help. So you break up the fight. But you only then find out the person you helped was the bad guy who had the edge over the good guy.
Whether this is framed in cop/robber stereotypes doesn’t change the reality. Maybe the cop is the good guy in a scenario where he was trying to stop a rapist or thief. Cops do sometimes enforce punishment against actual crimes, you know.
These protesters you see on TV are actors. They show up, do their lines, go home. They might believe some of their words but in the end they’ll move on to the next big thing they’re told to hate.
They aren’t protesting from a core belief, one they’d be willing to die for if they weren’t on TV or being paid. They’ve prostituted themselves.
They just didn’t realize the agreement with the Devil they’ve signed.

This is my fundamental problem. Immigration was the domain of the states, naturalization was the feds. Nothing legit changed that.
If congress would end unconstitutional welfare, the states couldn’t afford to support illegals and they would move on.
With all that they do that has the same lack of Constitutional referent, immigration seems to be an odd hill to die on. Particularly since the first Immigration Act passed in 1790, and there were plenty of people still alive and kicking who attended the ConCon a couple years earlier who, so far as I know, didn’t even make a peep about Congressional overreach. I don’t know of any Antifederalists who said anything other than, “I told you so!”

Disagree completely. First of all, the owner wasn’t insisting on masks because it was “store policy”. It was never store policy before 2020 to walk in like a bank robber with your face covered. It was government –
unelected county health director – policy that was more guideline than law.
Second, the options are not walking away or shouting at the manager. How about having an actual conversation? How about asking the manager why he is enforcing tyranny, how compliance will not lead to freedom but will only prolong the madness, how there are many exemptions, and to have some self-respect and do the right thing…for his children, if nothing else, and how he wants to be remembered by them – the dad who stood up to tyranny or the dad who complied sheepishly. And if all fails and he doesn’t want to listen, then call him a name or two and walk away.
Maybe in some jurisdictions. My county, for example, mandated the silly things, but most businesses ignored them. Those that made masks store policy tended to be either the big box or the ones with “Save the Whales” or similar slogans festooning their places of business. And, frankly, if either category leave my county or go out of business, I couldn’t be happier.

I think about 85 percent of what cops do is harass and collect/enforce laws that involve no harm done to anyone. Proof of this being that people like you and I – people who aren’t criminals – loathe feel uneasy whenever a cop is nearby. Why? Because even though we’re not harming anyone, we might become a target for “enforcement” because we transgressed some “law.”
To expand on this some more: Do you feel moral shame when you are handed a “ticket”? Or do you just feel angry? Well, unless you’re a psychopath or a sociopath, you only feel shame when you do something wrong. Doing something illegal is something else entirely.
You’re going to feel a whole lot more uneasy when the Virginia Dems pass the “assault weapon” ban and magazine ban they just introduced.
Then the cops will be able to arrest you on felony charges for having an inanimate object collecting dust in your closet that hasn’t been used to injure anyone. (But a “terrorist” like you MIGHT use it to injure people, so…)
And they’ll use an inanimate object identical to the one you’re forbidden have, and threaten to kill you with it when they arrest you.
If you think you hate the cops now, just wait until THAT law passes and you are reminded every day that you are truly a second-class peasant.

Just be aware that if the only source of profiling data is your socialist media presence, you are likely coded as something like your county’s version of “Ask questions later.” It’s always a good idea to have cultivated a relationship with at least one in the department who cares enough about you as a person to see if you are listed as “Presumed armed and dangerous” on your file and adds a notation that you are one of the good guys.
But if being gunned down over nothing is what you want, you be you.

I remember reading the paper when I was younger and the articles in the crime section nearly always began with “At [time/date], deputies/police made contact with So-and-so…”.
It is imperative that you avoid “contact” with AGWs, though that is sometimes done with difficulty when they are out seeking to “make contact” with us.
The seeds of police militarization were planted in the 1920s with large urban police departments and Prohibition agents receiving surplus WW1 weapons, and with the creation of SWAT teams in large urban police departments in the 1960s as a response to urban riots.
The crime epidemic that peaked in the early 1990s led the police and the public alike to call for “tougher on crime” approaches which culminated in the LAPD beating Rodney King and the “Broken Windows” approach of Rudy Giuliani in NYC.
But in my estimation, 9/11 made police militarization de rigeur for even small towns because cops were seen as first responders in the fight against terrorism, plus Uncle Sam was giving out money to help police departments be better equipped to stop terrorism, and who wanted to say no to that in the wake of 9/11?
That’s all fine and dandy until it turns out YOU are the one being targeted.
And the VP, who should know better, inflames the passions on both sides with his rhetoric. Why can’t our “leaders” just say that they regret the loss of life and that there will be a full investigation? Why rush to judgement before all the facts are known?
