It is sad, of course, that news personality Savannah Guthrie’s elderly mom has apparently been abducted and probably killed. But it is also really weird that this story – about one woman who has apparently been the victim of a heinous crime – is getting constant media attention while far less attention is being paid to all the women (and underage girls, at the time) who have been victimized by an array of very powerful men.
Not to mention all the other relevant news – such as the impending war with Iran and the still-increasing cost of everyday items such as coffee (which appears to have increased in cost by 30-plus percent in just two weeks’ time). It says something about priorities that says something about who is being paid to prioritize them.
The Guthrie Thing is – again – tragic. But it is also a case of ordinary criminality – as opposed to politically consequential criminality. Whoever snatched Guthrie’s mom is not exercising control over high-placed government officials. Savannah Guthrie may hand over money to the thugs who snatched her mom, hoping they’ll release her. But it has no bearing on whether Americans will pay taxes that will be used to fund foreign slaughter or line the already bulging pockets of “defense” contractors.
The Epstein Thing is, in other words, the much more important story. Not – obviously – to Guthrie and her family, of course. But to the country – which ought to be more important to the media.
Why isn’t it?
Well, obviously, because the media isn’t as interested in the Epstein Thing. More finely, it does not want you to be as interested in it. More finely even than that, it is paid to divert your interest away from it – by focusing it (so they hope) on this Guthrie Thing, which ultimately matters not in the least as far as the political situation. The Epstein Thing, on the other hand, matters more perhaps than anything – not because women (and it looks like underage girls) were serially abused by unimaginably despicable men but rather on account of the blackmail these men opened themselves up to – very possibly by interests associated with a foreign power.
This is – if it is true – not only many times more egregious than the mere lying about the skullduggery of his underlings that forced Richard Nixon to resign the presidency back in 1974.
It is far worse.
Nixon, as it turned out, was a crook. But – so far as we know – he was neither a kid-diddler nor controlled by a foreign power that possessed kompromat about such a thing. The evidence made public so far strongly hints that Bill Clinton was in that position, as well as numerous other high-placed creeps. The literally hysterical defensiveness of Trump’s attorney general – as well as of Trump himself – is unsettling for exactly that reason. Trump and Bondi seem worried that something might come out – either about Trump or (as has been reported) some of Trump’s friends.
Even if it is merely about Trump’s friends, what does it say about Trump that he considers it more important to shield them than to do whatever can be done to see justice done? To establish that the government is not riddled with kid-diddling cretins controlled by foreign interests?
The president said recently that he likes Bill Clinton and is troubled by the troubling questions being asked about his activities. This is very strange. It is troubling – to anyone who is troubled by the smoke that is suggestive of fire.
Speaking of that.
Thomas Massie has become the bete noir of this administration for insisting that this Epstein Stuff deserves serious scrutiny. There is no smoke where Massie is concerned. His name has not been associated with Epstein and there have – so far as can be ascertained – never been any allegations, even, of Massie having behaved sordidly let alone criminally in his private life. No woman – no girl – has ever claimed to have been hurt by him. Yet he has drawn down the wrath of both the president and the attorney general for insisting that the smoke be chased down, to see whether there is fire. This is not merely weird. It is despicable in its own right.
Who would want to “move on” from this Epstein Stuff before the full extent of the stuff is known and – where warranted – people who have done horrible things are held accountable? Who could be opposed to doing whatever must be done to cleanse the body politic of this metastasizing cancer? Is it not obvious that if this cancer isn’t cauterized – isn’t burned completely out of the body politic – the system itself will forever be regarded as not merely corrupt but evil?
Put more finely, the very legitimacy of the system – if it ever had any – is on the line. Bondi’s screeching about the Dow reveals a mind that does not realize human beings are concerned with more than just money. But then, Bondi has shown herself to be something not quite human.
Trump, too.
The sadness most of us feel for Savanna Guthrie does not obviate the anger most of us also feel about the way thus Epstein Stuff is being pushed under the rug, to the extent that Pam Bondi and Trump can jump up and down on the ugly lump that lies under the rug.
We’re not going to be distracted by the Guthrie Thing – let alone “move on,” as the president and his minions keeps on urging us to. If they think we will, they’re delusional.
Also – very possibly – evil.

Yes, it is possible for a man to support a “trad” (non-working, outside the home) wife and kids… it is also possible to send a manned mission to Mars. Yes, the latter is more extreme, but the point is I think valid. It is possible to live cheap(er) in a very rural area, but it also harder to earn a living in such areas. Even in my rural area, a single wide on an acre is going to cost $175k or so. Doable, sure. But tight.
I think the larger issue is precariousness. In the ’60s, there was job stability. You got a job and – so long as you were a reliable worker who did your job – it was pretty much a steady/guaranteed gig, which made it easier to put down roots and make long term plans. Things are more peripatetic now. That job may be gone for no reason having anything to do with you – and now what? Now what times double-worse if you’ve got a wife and kids to take care of.
There is job stability if you are a good worker, but it is being employed by small and medium sized businesses that do not have to answer to a Board of Directors and shareholders (except those that hold stock privately who usually work for the corporation, itself).
With the large amount of layoffs that have occurred recently one should be warned to stay far, far away from the corporate ladder. Fortune 500 companies have no loyalty to workers…only a share price. I say let AI take these jobs. For the rest of us, steer clear from doing business with these conglomerates.
I didn’t find that to be completely true. I graduated engineering school in 1993. I’ve worked pretty much exclusively for privately held companies, now 5 of them.
There’s been an off-shoring .com boom/bust layoff, two private-taken-public stumbles, one outright acquisition by a Fortune 100 that I relocated for. They so nicely made my job redundant when the project was done and eliminated it after about a year. Could not agree with you more about ‘corporate’ jobs. Working for anyone with an ‘HR director’ is a bad omen. Having one HR person is OK, there’s just too much red tape when you have more than a few employees to do it yourself and actually run the business.
I could have easily stayed with any of them had the ground not shifted under me and they remained the private company that I started with. The money is just too enticing for the owners when the V.C. vultures or corporations come sniffing.
The most recent was a COVID-clot-shot directive which forced my decision to walk away. That company is still around, though the two owners want to retire and they are trying to get the senior engineers still there to buy it from them.
What I find about privately held companies is you’re at the mercy of a person still and they don’t have to answer to anyone but themselves. This can be just as irrational as a board of directors. The last one, I worked for them for 5 years, I really liked the principles/owners but was completely blindsided that the one turned into a raving lunatic germophobe who saw death lurking everywhere.
I work for myself now, ‘consulting’ is what you’d call it. It’s residential electrical engineering, mostly pencil whipping designs for developers, and home inspections. It’s OK money but the main problem is cash flow being inconsistent. Some months I have a lot of work to bill, some months the workload is very thin. Does give me a lot of flexibility. If I wasn’t at the twilight of my career (so already licensed and established professionally with liability insurance) and still had kids at home and a mortgage it really could not work.

Smaller and medium-sized companies are FAR more pleasant to work for, but unfortunately they can drop the axe too when the budget gets tight.
I will say they tend to cut less often and less deeply, but they still do it.
I tend to agree, my wife worked, I worked we both took care f the family. In my view having a spouse that could take care of herself and the family was better than a life insurance policy. The premium was high but it was not a term policy, it is “whole life”.
MQ, I don’t think you have to tell anyone (since we all had parents) that both motherhood and fatherhood entail “a kind of indentured servitude” since whatever your economic status you have an 18 year commitment which can stretch to 40 years depending on the number/spacing of your children. Child could have an accident/birth handicap/illness/war wound which could make it a life long indentured servitude. Same could happen to your spouse. If you want to be “king (or queen) of the castle” it’s best to stay single–and many now opt for that (since they can support themselves and “can’t find the right one”)!
When Eric started out not sure he knew that he would be strapped economically later in life–but still didn’t have children (could have been his wife’s decision/not possible). I think it is more the availability of birth control than economics–given the choice people delay and then opt out: first it’s less children and then it’s no children (the less children you have the more you have for yourself).
In terms of life being precarious, I was recently watching Coal Miner’s Daughter. Both my grandfathers supported families of 9 and 6 children. Both had farms which neither of them liked (both my parents used outhouses). My one grandfather rented a farm and killed their last cow when he punched it after it kicked him while he was milking it (usually my grandmother milked). My mother said only time she ever saw him drunk was when they finally hit water drilling a new well. My mother used to have to feed the chickens and hated them pecking her bare feet. During the 30s at one point he dug ditches for a dollar day for the WPA (and then they filled them up the next day). He tried running a bowling alley and ended up burning it down for the insurance. He may have bought a truck with the money and finally made a success out of that. He traded his car for a house in town. My grandmother was a one room school teacher (before marriage and after children grew), she also sold eggs and milk when on the farm. His mother was a successful farmer which she gave to her other son and then opened a dress shop and her husband who’d lost his hearing and had shell shock from WWI became a janitor at the school. My other grandfather immigrated to the US; worked on the railroads and brought his wife and daughter over, then, while still working on the railroad, bought a farm and then sold it for an apartment building/boarding house which my grandmother ran. He also bought one handicapped son an ice cream shop.
Immigrants still seem to be making it here. I’m sure they think we’re all rich even though we think we’re too poor to even have a family.

Homesteading is doable. But I think what MQ (and I) were getting at is that’s pretty much what you have to do to make it doable. Put another way, it’s much more difficult now – financially – for a man to be able to do what men did during the postwar decades of prosperity, when a single income was enough to afford a home, a car and support a wife who took care of two or more kids at home. In most parts of the country that are populated, rents are outrageous and the buy-in cost of “first homes” is absurd. It keeps people in their 20s and 30s out of the house market – and those are the prime family-starting years. Yes, you can homestead in some out of the way place, where you can live on very little – but that’s not going to be a mass thing, which is why the native population (so to speak) is in decline.

The one income family is going out of style, because individuals today no longer believe in a partnership.
I come from a family of four girls. Two out of three of my sisters are SAHMs. My youngest sister remained at home with her youngest until he started kindergarten and she went back to work FT. I was the only sister that worked FT, but I worked for myself so I had flexibility that most don’t. During their schooling years they went to the office with me and I would homeschool them between breaks and lunch.
I could actually stay at home now and our family could survive off of one income, but I enjoy what I do and it takes pressure off my husband to constantly keep the gravy train rolling.
I just met with new clients last week. He is 30, she is 27. A few years married with a new baby. She is a SAHM after being a teacher early in the marriage. They purchased a home two years ago. The numbers do look crazy, especially on his current income, but they are doing it and I hope they succeed.
Personally, I think social media has killed the relationship. It is telling people that these things can’t be done, telling women that they don’t need men, and telling men that they hold no value. All of that is false. It is about two people working together who want to prosper as a partnership. Both have to put in the effort and sacrifice and I don’t believe many want to do that.

I’ve noticed the same thing. Some of them are very good indeed, and, had I not caught the few weird things, like rendering “$4 billion” as “four dollars billion”, I wouldn’t have bothered with loading it up into my video software and finding out that the motions, like shoulders moving or head nodding were exact copies throughout the video, and exactly the same as others on the same channel. Even down to identical artifacts. The only difference was the lips superimposed on the basic head-and-shoulders layer.

Originally I think it was a warning. The older woman may actually be dead. The younger NBC TV presenter platformed the Epstein victims in an interview some years ago and the timing of the kidnapping to coincide with the release is a warning to potential rogue journalists who might sense an opportunity to run with anything they find.

In my area, it’s kind of mixed. Sure, you can find things going up, but a lot staying the same or even going down. I have not seen boneless chicken breasts at $1.59 a pound in a long time, so stocked up. Pork shoulder roast $0.89, so same. But beef brisket was $9.99. Whipping cream up a dime a quart, the Amish roll butter I buy, unchanged. The coffee I buy down from $6.99 to $6.59. (“Your Ripple Blanc, sir.”)
My preferred daily brand went down in price last week, from $9.99 to $8.99. This for a 12 ounce bag of Costa Rican, so it wasn’t shrinkflation to 10 or 11 ounces that some others did recently. It’s a house brand.
I have a friend who is a boutique roaster who supplies direct to consumer. His standard size is 12 ounces and he’s been able to hold his bag price (at $20, it’s too rich for me as a daily but I get one for special occasions) so far since last summer.
He’s in some sort of collective to get his beans and he tells me Brazil’s 2026 harvest is set to be larger than normal and prices for their cherries should be going down soon. Ethiopia’s harvest is also up but they are having washed supply issues, so their delivered prices have gone up in 2026. Central America in general got a late start in harvest, not starting until December so that is driving up costs for roasters right now. Hawaii’s harvest is going normally so kona grinds shouldn’t see much change.
I would expect prices to get better next month, but it’s also possible the futures prices are hurting roasters and they are pricing their increases now anticipating that 2026/2027 is going to be another one like the 2024/2025 Minas Gerais (Brazil) major disruptions. They had an exceptionally dry 2024 fall and that was a major hiccup.
I have noticed coffee increasing, but I have been lucky when it comes to buying it on sale. I usually buy organic coffee from Vermont Coffee Company and Charleston Coffee Roasters. Martin’s (grocery located along the Northern I-81 corridor VA/WV) has Vermont Coffee on sale this week for $9.99 for a 16 oz bag…it is usually around $16. In December, they had it on sale for $6.99. I bought two bags a week until the price increased.
Most grocery stores accumulate the same sale every six weeks so if possible stock up enough to wait for the next sale. Never show up to a grocery store without a list and prices. Also, don’t be afraid to be a grocery store whore. Weekly circulars our are friends. Scan through them and see if someplace else has a better price. Is it worth saving $.30? No, but if you are looking at $10, $20, $50 then yes, it is worth it. Also, feel free to use your partners, siblings, parents, friends store cards/phone numbers. They get extra points and usually additional coupons/savings depending on the amount of money they spend each year – so you are helping them out.
