The Enemies of Freedom

Do you remember that line? It was spoken by The Chimp (he will always be The Chimp) 25 years ago, in the aftermath of what we were assured was a dastardly sneak attack by “Islamic terrorists” on the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan and the Pentagon in DC. What ensued was 25 years of terrorism, perpetrated by The Chimp and his successors upon the American people.

America suddenly became a “Homeland.” It had never been that previously. The term has a certain 1930s Germany mouth feel. Heimat is how it’s said in German. In 1930s Germany, there was a Heimatsicherheitsdienst  – which literally translates as Department of Homeland Security. Few at the time noticed. Not many are hip to today.

Most Americans have gotten acclimated to living in a Homeland; people under 30 today have no memory of America, before it became a Homeland. They never got to fly commercially without being processed by the Heimatsicherheitsdienst – just like we’re lectured to “never forget” was done to a certain group in Germany all those years ago. Oh, it’s not yet at the barking German shepherds and machine pistols pointed at our guts point. But we are getting there. Have you seen the new Agony Gloves that “ICE” will be using to handle Americans in the Homeland?

Before Nahhhhnnnlevven, it was at least technically illegal for the government to listen in on our phone calls. As in all of our phone calls. Or to log every key we tap when sitting in front of our computers. There had to be specific probable cause or a warrant. The whisper-lisping Chimp ended all of that. Data centers are putting the final row of bricks on the structure they began building all those years ago, with Flock and Axon cameras keeping real-time track of the “evildoers” – meaning, us. The Chimp’s successor – Donald Trump – assures us these data centers are necessary, because we have to win the AI race with China. Most people seem to take it as a given that winning the AI race is necessary. That it is desirable. Why is it desirable to have thinking machines running everything, which is to say controlling everything? We will have no control over this, of course.

They do not say that part out loud.

I do not believe “Islamic terrorists” flew commercial jets into the World Trade Center towers or the Pentagon because – for openers – the individual accused of doing it denied doing it. This makes no sense. If Osama bin Laden and his network actually did do it, it was a masterful humiliation of the United States and he would have taken credit. Yet he did not. He in fact vehemently denied it.

Think about that.

I also do not believe that the World Trade Center Towers – including WT 7 – were made to collapse vertically into their own footprint as a consequence of being struck by commercial jets. Especially since WTC 7 wasn’t struck by a commercial jet. Debris from the collapse of WTC towers one and two did damage WTC 7 and there were fires. But not fires hot enough to weaken let alone melt the building’s structural supports such that they all failed at pretty much the exact same moment, which they had to have for the building to have collapsed straight down at near freefall speed. That is as improbable as Trump reciting a Cicero oration by heart, without aid of a TelePrompter.

I also happened to be living in the DC area on that day, twenty-five years ago – which is why I am very suspicious about the lack of even a single video record or snapshot of what we were told hit the Pentagon. I was there, remember. And I remember that everyone was looking up to see what might be coming next because we’d all heard about what happened earlier that morning in New York. The thousands of people walking around outside in proximity to the Pentagon would also have been looking up and how many of them had cameras? DC is a major tourist attraction and the Pentagon is just across the river from downtown. We are expected to believe none of the thousands of tourists had cameras – or that not one of them snapped a picture or took video of a roaring-toward-the-Pentagon 757 when everyone already new that 757s had been flown into the Towers in New York, so we were told. DC is also a place that is heavily surveilled, even back then. There were security cameras everywhere. Not one recorded anything, except for that one by the Pentagon – which showed a fast-moving blur and an explosion and nothing more.

I will tell you what else I remember: Immediately after the supposed 757 strike on the Pentagon, local news coverage was showing images of the aftermath. What was shown was a near-perfect hole that was not 757-sized, with no damage to either side – where wings with huge jet engines hanging underneath each one ought to have damaged something – nor above the hole, where a 757’s vertical stabilizer ought to ave struck the wall. Those early images have been scrubbed; you can’t find them anymore. But I saw them – and I remember. I will never forget, either.

Detectives are taught to base their investigations on finding the answer to a single question: Who benefitted from the crime? Well, who benefitted from Nahhhhhhhnlevven? It wasn’t Bin Laden. It certainly wasn’t Iraq, which we were assured by The Chimp possessed “weapons of mass destruction” and that if the United States didn’t attack, Americans might wake up to a “mushroom cloud” instead of tall buildings free-falling vertically into their own footprint. Who benefitted from that attack – the one on Iraq, that is? Who is benefitting from the current attack – on Iran? Or at least, had hoped to benefit from it.

There seems to be a common thread running through it all. Maybe the time has come to tug on it and see what happens.
