They let you buy pot now – legally – in some states. Including my state of Virginia. But you’re only allowed to buy it at what are styled “medical marijuana dispensaries.”
Marvel at the etymological grift, first.
I sometimes smoke pot and eat pot-laced cookies and so on – for basically the same reasons people have a drink or two after dinner or just because. Because it makes me feel good. It helps me relax. It helps me sleep. Is there something wrong with any of that? Adults are allowed – sickening to have to use the word but it’s necessary because it’s accurate – to drink alcohol without any pretend patty-cake playing that they’re drinking for “medicinal” reasons. Old timers may have used that term but it was always used in a wink-wink kind of way in that everyone understood the drinker was just enjoying a drink.
Well, I (and many others) occasionally like to smoke or eat an edible (my preference because I’m not much of a smoker). For decades, this meant I was a lawbreaker, a “criminal,” even. I actually almost once went to prison for felony “manufacturing a controlled substance with intent to distribute.” That sounds pretty heavy, doesn’t it? Indeed it was. But it was just me growing pot plants in my college dorm room when I was 19. For that I could have been sent to prison – for years. Luckily, I wasn’t – although many were and knowledge of this fact instilled in me a lifelong disgust for the so-called “war” on some drugs. Alcohol being just one exception to the “war.” Imagine potentially facing years in prison because you defied a law that said you’re not allowed to brew beer!
Same principle – just differently applied.
Then there are all the perfectly legal drugs “prescribed” by the medical cartel, strictly supervised (and even pushed) by the state – which we’ll get to shortly. There are numerous examples of such legal drugs being far more dangerous to “health” than pot, which maybe makes the pot smoker or edible eater a little silly for awhile.
Or sleepy.
Anyhow, fast forward a few decades and now – in the same state – it is legal to smoke pot and eat edibles but if you want to buy these, you must buy them at a state-sanctioned “dispensary,” as they are styled. This styling is intended to give it a patina of state-sanctioned legitimacy – as if there were something illegitimate about an adult electing to smoke pot or eat edibles for reasons that are no one else’s legitimate business. And you must first get a “prescription” from a state-sanctioned doctor before you’re even allowed to enter the “dispensary.”
The “prescription” is obtained by phone and of course there is a fee ($100 in my case). You call up the doctor and pretend you need something for the pain – oh, the pain! (say it like Dr. Smith from Lost in Space) and maybe you really do. That is not the point. The play-pretending and state’s permission-seeking is. The doctor (wink-wink) prescribes pot. Now you can enter the “dispensary” and buy whatever you like – and as much as you like – and use it however you like. Which is of course as it ought to be, just the same as it is for alcohol. You can buy a whole case of beer or several quarts of your favorite whiskey but without the pretend-play that it is for “medicinal” purposes and without having to pay a doctor $100 to get a “prescription” first.
But it isn’t really, is it? Not only does the state control what you’re allowed to buy but it also knows – in detail – what you have bought and when you consider that it’s pot and that (just one example) federal firearms forms require the applicant to aver they do not partake of “drugs,” you can see where this could lead. It has already arrived insofar as this business of the state controlling everything we’re allowed to do and defining the terms of this being allowed. How long before we’re not allowed to buy herbs, supplements and homeopathic remedies? There is control to be had and money to be made, after all. But they’ll tell us – as they always do – that they’re actually helping us and have our best interests at heart So said the rancher to the cow. 
It is said that tyranny for your own good is the worst sort of tyranny and there is truth in this saying. There is something galling about the cynical dishonesty of the play-pretend patty cake, too. A mugger who demands your money or your life is in a very deep sense an honest fellow. He’s threatening to kill you if you don’t hand over your wallet. He does not expect you to play patty-cake pretend that he is relieving you of your wallet for your own good or that he is doing anything other than straight-up mugging you. It is much less galling to get mugged than it is to get mulcted – via some asinine patty-cake-pretend game you’re made to play in order to be allowed to do something you have every right as a grown man or woman to do without having to get the state’s permission first or play a stupid game (and pay to play it) as a condition of getting that permission.
This “medical marijuana” business is seen by some as a great leap forward but is it really? We’re now patients rather than criminals, which some see as an upgrade but it is arguably a degradation in that the implication is we’re just hopeless junkies who need our “meds.”
Speaking of which, this stupid patty-cake-pretend ritual also arguable degrades – and corrupts – the medical profession. The prescription-writers know it’s all patty-cake-pretend but they also know it is profitable. $100 a pop – for maybe five minutes on the phone? Ka-ching! A doctor could easily make $1,000 for an hour’s worth of telephone script-writing. That’s a pretty good living, isn’t it? It’s also a pretty good motivator to support the “medical marijuana” laws that restrict “dispensing” pot to those who buy a “prescription.”
It’d be healthy if we could just dispense with the bullshit – honest language – and the rent-seeking. Also the patty-cake pretend game playing and the state’s obnoxious meddling. Grown adults aren’t children in need of supervision or permissions lips and it is galling – to any adult worthy of the title – to be told what he or she is allowed to as regards things that are no one else’s legitimate business.
Such as taking a puff or eating an edible. Or a supplement.
Or anything else, for that matter.

You’re right – the potency of the stuff they sell today at the dispensaries is much greater than that of the street weed we smoked back in the day. This has its upsides, though. You don’t need to smoke as much – and the stuff lasts a lot longer! I eat a piece of a gummy – not the whole thing – and that’s plenty for me.

The economics of prohobition, really. Had there been no prohibition on weed for decades back, there would have been much less incentive to pack as much of the good thing per certain volume (I’ve read before that during the alcohol prohibition in the US they made a very strong wine and beer to accommodate for the demand for a stronger kick. Another example of how prohibition keeps us safe). The way to go is to let your weed stay for a while cause it loses potency. I’ve read there are classic strains available but not really at the dispensaries (one would think they should rather offer weaker stuff for our safety, right? :D), though where I live I’ve found some 8% THC weed available instead of 20-ish.

Our experiences in CO and IL have been educational….what I will say is that edibles in particular allow one to titrate dosages to the degree that one can juice the creative forces, or simply zone out….I prefer the former. Yes, there is a potential for people with poor impulse control to go the Soma route, but that’s what self-ownership allows, nicht wahr? Besides, it’s too late to prevent the overlap between 1984, Brave New World and Farenheit 451 anyway….I just hope some of the younger folk will pay enough attention that we extricate ourselves from the Israeli tarbaby and that people realize that war is the least efficient use of resources to achieve desired goals….

I will never understand the emotional investment some people make in sports. A team of paid entertainer-athletes defeats another team of paid entertainer athletes in a game. Maye it is entertaining to watch them play the game. But it’s a thing of no consequence and the players are just making a buck (not that there’s anything wrong with this). Yet some regard them as a kind of proxy for themselves; a sort of heroic band of Spartans defending their city. Now that’s ridiculous. It’s also childish for adults to be more than entertained by these games; to invest emotion in the outcome. To be depressed when “we” lose – and elated when “we” win.

I disagree with you re pot. It is objectively less harmful than booze. Used occasionally and in moderation it – like alcohol – has beneficial attributes. I use it occasionally and in moderation because it alleviates body aches and helps me sleep, which is often difficult for me because of body aches and because it is hard for me to “turn off.” I’m not addled by pot. Neither are several good friends of mine – guys I have known for decades, who also use it occasionally and in moderation. Several of these run successful small businesses and employ others, etc.
Some people abuse alcohol; they become alcoholics. It does not mean that enjoying a couple of fingers of whiskey after work on occasion makes you an alcoholic. Same as regards the occasional and moderate use of pot.

Having grown up in a household with an alcoholic parent, marijuana would have been a less lethal substance, but due to the alcohol lobby’s influence, marijuana was illegal for a long time. I can remember ads put out by the alcohol industry in the 1970s lumping marijuana with “harder” illegal drugs while declaring that alcohol was not harmful, was pleasurable and functioned as a “social lubricant”.
In my case, bearing the brunt of an alcoholic parent, I chose to NOT drink alcohol. I have alcohol around the house for guests but I myself choose NOT to imbibe. Of course, I might have a shot with guests around the holidays but have no desire to imbibe on a regular basis.
When it comes to children in households with an alcoholic parent, the children learn one of two things–to drink or to NOT drink. In my case, I learned to NOT drink alcoholic beverages; I cannot say the same for one of my siblings who is a full-blown alcoholic.
Enough of my experiences and rant…
P. S: the alcohol lobby is publicly complaining about the loss of business due to marijuana being legalized in some of “the several states”. It seems that more and more people are eschewing alcohol and embracing the occasional marijuana buzz”–a good thing.

Marijuana is a cash cow for the state, at least here in Michigan. To apply for a marijuana purveyor’s “license” an “application fee” of $11,000.00 (yes eleven thousand dollars) is required. This is non-refundable, even if the license is denied.
There is a 24% “retail tax” on all consumer marijuana transactions.
All transactions are in cash as banks are prohibited from assisting the marijuana trade. However, “cash out only” ATMs are available within the facilities for those who choose to utilize debit or credit cards.
Talk about a cash cow for the state…

Yup. Same here in NJ. It was barely legal before the former governor proposed a 500% increase in the tax on cultivators. Plus, local governments can levy tax as well. They are loving it. It’s certainly not stopping people from buying though. Most of the dispensaries around here always seem to be busy. I have a friend who smokes a lot. She said she knows she’s paying more but prefers it to the “local businessman” she was getting it from previously. More convenient and reliable.

Personally I wouldn’t trust any mass market marijuana. Ive never used it, but If I was to use it, I would grow it myself, knowing exactly what has been put on it. It smells different now than 20 years ago. Same with tobacco that is purposefully poisoned for sale in grocery stores and gas stations, as well as many corner store tobacco shops that have super bright LED lights. If a tobacco shop has dim lights, an Indian statue, and/or leather chairs, you can probably find some good quality stuff there.

They just installed “Flock” cameras at all the local ABC stores to keep folks “safe” and I’m sure the “dispensaries” will have this “feature” as well. Can’t you just smell the freedom?
Much like alcohol prohibition, they had to legalize it, since the “law” was largely ignored.

Well, any legalization is good. It grants some sort of access, better than none at all.
Of course, I’m for complete legalization of everything. It’s none of anyones business what I do or don’t do.
Even if “heaf care” was publically funded, you cant be sure that alcohol or pot causes any disease at all.

I think that for Colorado retail pot has been a disappointment. Not a disaster (yet), just sad the way it turned out. The first few years were all about psychedelic tourism, with the parking lots in the cannabis dispensaries full of Utah license plates. Then came the crime wave, because even though it’s legal and taxed and licensed in Colorado, the IRS and DEA could still hassle you and your bank. So it’s a cash business with unique ways to launder the money like a second business as a real estate holding company that charges an outrageous rent to the pot shops.
The real disaster is Las Vegas. Every year since about 2010 or so I would make my annual trip to LV to spend too much on buffets and pinball machines (and go hiking out to the desert). Since Nevada decriminalized cannabis the strip started seeing a big decline in gambling revenue. Because when you’re stoned you don’t gamble. So then they had to make up the revenue somewhere, and it started in the parking lot. The one thing you could count on in Vegas was free parking. When that went away everyone started watching the clock. Then just walking down the strip became an exercise in annoyance, as you see a L’l John wannabe with his pants down around his knees. Cheech and Chong sized spliff in one hand, and his “juice” in the other. He and his harem just strolling along, taking up the entire sidewalk, while some fellow tribeswomen drive by with their bare ass out the passenger window.

Now Vegas is abandoning the lower class people and chasing after the conventioneers. They probably don’t gamble much but they also get a per diem that’s a lot more than what they’d pay out of pocket and company paid rooms. They don’t necessarily walk the strip or run between hotels either.
But back to Colorado, I think one of the long term effects of legal retail pot has been the clear shift to the left/radical progressive politics. The white flight from California has a lot to do with that as well, but when they were looking at the map, Colorado might have stood out a little brighter because they could buy (or grow their own) without consequence.

All the little guy local enthusiasts/enterpreneurs tried to get the licenses, but the communist hammer and sickle party (DFL) has somehow only issued them to favored groups (Indian tribes- who apparently can extend their reservation territory at will, and who are predominantly enthusiastic leftists), and to very rich/powerful/connected groups able to “contribute” to the party.

Actually psychedelics do have usefulness in certain mental health situations. However, psychiatrists with their dishonest self-created psychosis definitions would not be needed, hence the negative attitudes towards psychedelics. Follow the shekels.
Psychedelics will be the next wave of therapeutic treatments as they are now being investigated albeit on a limited scale within the medical field.

College psych prof, educated as MD in Switzerland, said he and classmates were required to take mescaline as part of their training. He referred to such drugs as “psychotomimetic,” meaning they mimic psychosis.
I had the unsettling experience, long ago, of watching an undergraduate classmate who was on LSD full on hallucinate, jump up and down, piss his pants, screaming about God and the Devil, fall down a stairwell. He took a swing at me, but I was not what he was seeing. I was told he believed he had a “religious experience.”

Don’t get me started on Vegas, RK. It was the greatest place ever for a young adult setting out on his own. When a dumbass like me can show up with tools, a truck, and some clothes, and through little more than persistence do very well, it really was a special ‘last of the Wild West’ type place. Now, I wont set foot there. Not a big problem since the lights, bells, and whistles of slot machines give me a visceral churn in my gut and a nasty migraine.
In the beginning a license cost 100K$. Now, only criminals in need of furthering their rehabitulation need apply. Probably all subsidized by taxpayers as well. Years ago I went to the large legal grow op near me. After talking to one of the workers, and seeing the operation, I’d tell anyone, if you value your health, don’t put that toxic shit in your body/lungs. Pesticides used on monthly schedule, cultural practices that outweigh any cannabinoidal benefit, bad medicine.
You’re right about legal pot bringing progressive radicalism, more precisely, an increase in feminists and communists. Legal weed does attract those low quality types. Az has the most lenient laws of any of the states in regards, growing, possessing, and using. I have noticed an uptick in left wing loons the last few years. Still far from a majority. Although treasonous local media, the education system, and warehouses pre-loaded with DNC mail in ballots are regularly used to convince the populace otherwise.
Basically, we’re living in Huxley’s “Brave New World.” It’s a totalitarian surveillance-state dystopia but the people are conned into thinking they are “free” because they can have legal weed (soma) and can do buttsex.

In a sane world you could grow your own and know for sure if it had been laced with say fentanyl or other drug.

Then the voters decided to make it legal, and to hell with the Feds. Cue hilarity by the state government, who were already counting and spending the supposed wind fall in taxes they would receive taxing the stuff. Whoops, come to find out, people know people, and cut out the gov’t middle man (and their tax) altogether.
I don’t drink alcohol or use tobacco even though it’s perfectly legal to do so. My non-use in no way impacts another person’s use of said products. Ditto Mary Jane. Frankly, I don’t care what others do insofar as it doesn’t impact me.
So, if anyone wants to hit a bong, joint, hookah, or eat an edible, then knock yourself out. Doesn’t even have to be 4/20 to do so.

Yes, same here. COVID didn’t so much break my heart as confirm my view of what has become Medicine, Inc. It’s just another grift. It is thoroughly corrupt. Even well-meaning doctors are now diagnostic tree/pill-pushing employees of the cartels. The respect they may once have been due is gone – at least for me. Any doctor who wore a “mask” – to say nothing of the ones who helped enforce “mask” wearing – is either owned or incompetent and neither is the kind of person you want to trust with your health. Better off consulting a witch doctor and making an offering to the gods.
Totally agree. My feeling is leave me alone and keep your hands out of my pockets. Neither of which the government, occupying force does.
