I have written a number of articles critical of Elon Musk’s “free speech” social media grift – which I say is just that because it isn’t free (assuming you want more than a few people to know you’ve spoken). You must pay a recurrent fee for what is styled “reach.” Even then, your “reach” is subject to being limited via completely obscure parameters known only to Elon and his algorithm.
Free ought to mean not just without cost but open. As in everyone can use it and no one is limited in any way from using it. Xcrement does not work like that.
I have – after years of posting on X – acquired 249 followers.
For some context, a friend of mine has 289 followers.
I run a web site that averages about 50,000 visits monthly. I do several talk radio/podcast appearances every week; some of these shows have tens of thousands of listeners. I’m fairly well-known. My point here is not to be braggadocious but to try to make a point. My friend is just a guy. He doesn’t have a syndicated weekly column or run a popular web site or do any talk radio/podcast appearances. Yet he has acquired more followers on Xcrement than I have.
Maybe it is his winning personality.
I do not think it is – even though he does have personality. Because it is improbable – it defies reason. I think it is evidence that Xcrement is just what that is, which is why I like to call it that.
I don’t especially care that my “reach” on Xcrement is essentially nil. I do care that Musk’s various grifts go unrecognized as grifts. He has just become a trillionaire by dint of the IPO of his Space Xcrement grift, which lots of people have bought into because they believe there is a Tesla roadster in orbit around the Earth and that we’ll soon be able to buy tickets for a trip to Mars. In fact, what they have bought into is the grift of government contracts, which are paid for with dollars fleeced from the tax sheep. People who buy Space Xcrement stock can share in the grift, of course. But it does not change the nature of the grift.
Tesla is his best-known grift. Except for the fact that many do not understand it is a grift. They see the stock valuation of the operation and the number of Teslas that have been sold. They do not see (or do not want to talk about) the carbon credits grift that underwrote the operation, nor the fact that stock value was a function of coercion (i.e., the regulatory mandates that served as a de facto EV manufacturing mandate). Musk recently used his Space Xcrement grift to underwrite his Tesla grift by having Space Xcrement buy a fleet of his Cybertrucks, thereby getting the tax sheep to pay for them.
There s also the DOGE grift – which is also Trump’s grift. Does anyone remember DOGE – the Department of Government Efficiency? It was sold to the rubes as a clean-up operation. Not only would government spending be reduced, the tax sheep were to get a refund! Well, government is now more expensive than it has ever been and we’re still waiting for that check to come in the mail.
Meanwhile, many people continue – pathetically – to talk to the hand on Xcrement when they’re probably not talking to anyone except Elon’s bots. All the while, their data is being collected and monetized.
Some even pay for the privilege.

Once, the way people made money from colonizing Mars was to write science fiction books about it. Who can forget ol’ John Carter of Mars, the creation of Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1911:
‘A Confederate veteran from Virginia, John Carter is transported to the planet Mars, called Barsoom by its inhabitants. There, he becomes a warrior battling various mythological beasts, alien armies, and malevolent foes across Barsoom.
‘The series, which began with A Princess of Mars, follows Carter’s adventures on the dying planet, where he gains superhuman strength and becomes a hero to the red and green Martians, including the princess Dejah Thoris and the green warrior Tars Tarkas.’
How can you lose with a title like A Princess of Mars? All that was missing was some saucy boudoir photos of the exotic lass. 🙁
A century on, the African-American Elon
MushMusk implausibly has decided to become a real-life John Carter. I wish him a long and profitable one-way voyage to his unlikely new home — though he’s unlike to find a princess there. Earth girls are easy.
