Very few people dislike firemen or EMS workers. This is probably a function of the fact that they only come when called – which is another way of saying when they’re needed.
Police are not like that. They come when they’re not needed – much less wanted. They are always prowling around looking for reasons to police people. The word is italicized to emphasize an important point. Rather, to raise some important questions. Is “policing” a justifiable thing? What do we mean by “policing”? Well, in general, it means enforcing laws. These laws need not be good laws – in the moral sense. All that matters, as far as the police are concerned, is that the law is the law.
This brings us to some policing that’s been going on in New Jersey, in a town called Dunellen. The local police dressed up in ghillie suits – these are suits that make a man look like a bush and are usually used by military snipers and hunters to avoid being seen by their targets, which is just exactly how they were used by the police in Dunellen, NJ. Their targets were drivers who transgressed the law that says Thou Shallt Not Use Your Phone While Driving. Ghillie-suited cops hid themselves in plain sight, waiting for transgressors. At least 74 such paying customers – so to speak – were bagged. In New Jersey, it is a transgression to use a phone while driving and the punishment for this transgression ranges from $200-$400 for a first-time transgression. If additional transgressions are committed, the fines go up.
The Dunellen police say that “that text or notification can wait. Keep your eyes on the road, not your screen.” This is fascinating on several levels. In no particular order, let’s begin with the fact that police are constantly on their screens – the big computers that are built into every police car. They are regularly on them while they are policing (that is, driving around looking for people to police). Of course – and to be fair – so is everyone else. At least, so is everyone else who is driving around in a car made since about five years ago, when built-in smartphones became standard in all new cars. They have even bigger screens to keep you distracted and lots of icons to tap and swipe, too.
This is entirely legal. 
Which raises another question: Why should either thing be illegal? Put another way, what is the harm in using a phone (or the phone built into the car) if no harm is caused thereby? Think about that one for a moment.
The premise behind all the policing, of course, is that harm will follow but this is (obviously) not necessarily so. Or even probably so. It is the same fallacy that underlies laws that say a person may not carry or even possess a gun; not because a particular person did anything to cause harm with a gun but because a generic “someone” might cause harm. Similarly, the person who uses a phone while driving is presumed to have caused harm even though he has not actually caused it. Nevertheless, he is punished.
This is arguably the biggest moral problem with this policing business. 
There is no moral problem when the firemen you asked to show up arrive to douse your burning house. Or when EMS come to try to save a person who has been hurt or who is gravely ill and requires immediate medical help. There is a massive moral problem in police hiding as bushes to police people who’ve caused no harm to anyone. Of course, police have been hiding behind bushes for generations, in order to police “speeders” and seat belt law transgressors and HOV offenders. Once again, note that these transgressions entail no actual harm done to anyone.
Such policing is arguably a form of sadistic behavioral enforcement. We saw a lot of that during “COVID.” Remember?
A recent piece by Leo Hohmann gets into this. It dissects what he calls severe psychopathic authoritarianism. Put in vernacular, do as you’re told – because we say so. Or else. We got a heavy dose of this during “COVID.” We saw – all of us – just how psychopathic and authoritarian (and sadistic) policing can be.
Now, the article’s focus is on Flock “safety” cameras. But note the common thread. Authoritarian behavioral enforcement in the name of “safety.” It is the same premise used to justify the ghilli-suited policing performed in Dunellen – and everywhere else the same kind of policing (ghilli-suited or not) that has become routinized in this country.
Hohmann quotes from Dr. Joseph Sansone, who is a psychiatrist:
“These cameras create a permanent map of law-abiding citizens and can record exactly where you sleep, work, worship, or socialize, completely destroying the right to move anonymously in an alleged free society. The cameras can be used to target political dissent by tracking who attended rallies and protests and can retroactively search the cameras surrounding the event to log the vehicle descriptions, license plates, and identities of every attendee. Cross-state surveillance allows one state to police actions in another state.”
Are we surprised that such panopticonic surveillance is upon us? Why are we surprised? Does it not follow from police hiding behind bushes and (now) dressing up as bushes?
If it is accepted that it’s acceptable to police people who’ve not caused harm but might (so it is claimed) cause it, then there is no coherent argument to be made to limit such policing. Indeed, there is a strong argument for the maximum-feasible policing. Our Safety demands it. To the nth extent, as depicted by Orwell in 1984. Policing everywhere, all the time. Not just out in public but also in private. In your bedroom. In your bathroom. Because there is always the possibility you might be doing something unsafe and the possibility of that simply cannot be abided.

I think the problem seems to be a misunderstanding of the concept of a hypothetical. Let’s try it this way.
Suppose that when WWI finished, the country of Germany ceased to exist. Intriguingly, the start of that is roughly what did happen. Starting in the late 1800s jews were buying up large tracts. By 1920, they held deed to about 7% of the British Mandate, and, what was the main sticking point, about 30% of the farmland.
But the muslims were not nearly the peace-loving neighbors you imagine. In 1920, an arab uprising in Jerusalem killed a small number of jews (6, IIRC) and the Brits stepped in to remove the jews from land they held title to, but the arabs wanted back. No compensation until ’48 when the Brits adjusted the borders a little to try to make up for it. It was not a good deal for the jews — something like 20 acres of desert in exchange for 1 acre of the best farmland in the region, but it was something.
And the Jerusalem uprising was hardly a one-off. Muslim countries around the region took the cue and purged or expelled the jews (and christians) in their lands.

When I was young, I lived in bad parts of NY, such as in the cheap parts of the Bronx or Brooklyn. 1980’s NY was rough in those places. Often, you’d see someone who was clearly up to no good, so you’d cross the street, or just turn around and get out of there. That scared feeling is the same for me now with cops. The only interactions I’ve ever had with cops were negative, where they lorded over me because I crossed the street in the wrong place, or I was driving late at night which is suspicious. The difference between cops and Bronx thugs is that a cop will find it suspicious when you turn around and walk away, unlike the thug, who might leave you alone.
Cops contemptuously refer to us mere mundanes (all non-cop citizens) as “civilians”. This insulting and imperious terminology obtains with all law enforcement organizations — not just your local sheriff’s department and city police.

Here is are examples of firefighter arrogance which ruined many innocent peoples’ lives:
A firefighter from a certain southeastern Michigan community claimed to have a “arson dog”–one that could detect accelerants. This “firefighter” and his dog were instrumental in ruining many peoples’ lives by his testimony alone.
Insurance companies LOVED this guy as he was able to get them out of paying (valid) claims. People were denied valid insurance claims and prosecuted for arson on the testimony of this “arson dog’s” handler.
Those who were accused of arson by this supposed arson dog’s “handler” had no recourse, because of “qualified immunity”. The firefighter (and fire department) could not be sued.
Finally one citizen who had been accused of arson fought back by suing to prove the “arson dog’s” ability. The dog was found to have NO special ability.
The “arson dog” and his human master’s career was finally over.
How many innocent people were convicted of arson and lost everything they owned?? The arson dog’s owner firefighter retired without incident receiving a full pension.
Another case was that of a plating plant that caught fire. The owners had a fire department “approved” fire plan in place which involved shutting off utilities and shutting down processes in an orderly fashion.
The firefighters that responded to the fire pushed the owner out of the way, and told him that they were going to do things “their way”. The firefighters on scene ignored the fire plan. As a result the building burned to the ground.
A firefighter’s job (for at least 98% of the time) is not inherently dangerous. This does not take away from the seriousness of their job, which is to be commended. but, firefighter arrogance can be just as dangerous as police arrogance. THIS is why firefighters should be included in any abolition of qualified immunity for public officials.

“Municipal police departments” are a relatively new phenomenon in the grand scheme of human civilization. This concept of “law enforcement” is beholden to the power structure and not to the citizenry.
In “the good old days”, the “sheriff” was the chief “law enforcement” individual in the county and had broad reign in his respective jurisdiction. When the need arose, ordinary citizens were “deputized” and were given limited “police authority” at the discretion of the “sheriff”. This was used during emergencies when there was a need for “manpower”.
Today, this has morphed into the need for permanently appointed sheriff’s deputies.
In order for a sheriff to be elected (and re-elected) he has to have a good reputation among the citizenry.
Accountability to the citizenry is a major part of the equation.
Fast forward to today, where the “chief of police” in major urban areas is quite often a political “hack” whose allegiance is to the mayor and power structure, not the citizenry. This is a large part of the problem as it fosters an “us vs. them” attitude, where the citizenry (us) is considered to be the “enemy”. It gets worse, as city officials “pull back” their police when they should be doing just the opposite.
The concept of “qualified immunity” for public officials has been expanded to the point that police departments operate with impunity and have no problem abusing their power as the prosecutors, courts, and in general the “system” is heavily stacked against the victim of police abuses. It is almost impossible to sue police departments for abuses committed by their personnel.
Individual police officers cannot be sued as they are “protected” from lawsuits by their official “immunity”. Even with incontrovertible video and audio evidence, police are rarely convicted of crimes. Juror intimidation is a large factor in the inability to reign in the “bad apples”. Police unions play a large part in whitewashing criminal behavior by police.
Immunity negates responsibility and must be abolished across the board.
Let’s not forget the “israelization” of today’s police departments where “escalation of force” has been replaced with israeli-style “command and control” tactics in which immediate compliance with police commands is demanded.
American police departments routinely send their personnel to israel for (free) training in how to handle Palestinians (oops, I mean American citizens) to “see how it’s done”. We are all Palestinians, now…
Problems arise when multiple police officers bark out conflicting commands as in the case of Daniel Shaver being murdered by Mesa Arizona police officer Philip Brailsford for being unable to crawl on his stomach with his hands behind his back–impossible for any human being to do. Google it… In fact, Brailsford was rehired by his police department so that he could apply for and receive a disability pension. The “thin blue line” definitely protects it’s “bad apples”.
Police work is not particularly dangerous. There are many other professions that are more dangerous such as firefighters and electrical line workers.
Pushback is coming with the increased abuses committed by police and the official whitewashing that takes place. Those who attack police see only the uniform and not the person wearing it.
Not a good situation for either police or the citizenry…
Just maybe it is time to abolish municipal police departments and go back to the sheriff model of “law enforcement”.
P,S: If I had my way, “qualified and absolute immunity” for all public officials would be abolished. “Carve-outs” which give police and others exemptions from laws that “the rest of us” are expected to follow would be abolished as well. “Subdued graphics” such as dull black lettering on a shiny black police car would also be outlawed.

ICE uses administrative warrants in violation of the Constitution, using them to gain entry to residences—totally unconstitutional. Judicial warrants are required to gain access to a residence.
ICE is being utilized by our Israeli-controlled federal government to get the citizenry used to seeing masked, unidentifiable, armed military personnel on our streets.

I think one of the greatest benefits of today’s society is that it is a high trust society, and specifically the order it brings. As far as “rules of the road” go, a counter may be to think about southeast asia (i.e. Vietnam, etc.) with all those pictures of chaotic traffic. Obviously, no cops there. How do all those guys get along? Closest I ever experienced that was driving thru Times Square at 9:00PM on a Saturday nite. Talk about chaos! But all the traffic was moving along, and there were just too many people swarming that area to be policed at all.

There are a lot of young female police officers, and some males too, who are afraid of pulling over cars with rough characters in them. All cops know to stay away from the wealthy unless called. Their safest target is people who have to work for a living, so that is who they focus on. The police focus on jamming up members of the segment of society that obeys and fears the law. Legalism is a dangerous problem. The legal system has nothing to do with justice, in fact, respect for the law can only proven by heeding and accepting unjust outcomes. But then the education system is concerned with controlling (limiting) what and how people think, not unleashing minds to meet maximum potential. And the goal of “healthcare” is for everyone visit the doctor on a regular basis and take pills daily, not be healthy.

In today’s America, and in many other parts of the world, the process is the punishment. Selective prosecution is a major problem in this country. BLM and Antifa types who have committed crimes are ignored while innocents who defend themselves (but are of the wrong political persuasion) are charged with crimes.
Witness Daniel Penny who was being viciously prosecuted in NYC for saving fellow subway passengers from mentally ill Jordan Neely who had been harassing and threatening subway passengers for decades. Thankfully, he was acquitted.
The case of the NYC bodega owner, Jose Alba who successfully thwarted a knife attack, his attacker succumbing to his injuries, was under indictment and prosecution for murder until a groundswell of opposition forced the prosecutor to back off on prosecuting him.
The case of Bernie Goetz, the NYC subway rider who thwarted being robbed by dispatching four of his attackers to the hospital. Subway crimes dropped dramatically after that act. If Goetz had kept his mouth shut, no one would have been the wiser.
Being charged with a crime, the indictment, the arraignment and trial are all a part of the punishment. Even if the case is dismissed, the damage, the difficult days, the threat of fines, incarceration and legal bills, and the uncertainty of what comes next are all punishments.

Why do so many hate the police?
When called for assistance, they often will not show up in time or do not want to take action that requires paperwork for what they consider minor infractions.
Yet their numbers are so out of proportion to actual criminal investigation and response needs that they find themselves with extra time on their hands. What to do?
They fill that time with “monitoring” activities. What they monitor tends to be traffic. Traffic offenses require very little work. Observe a violation, write a ticket. 15 minutes of activity breaks the boredom.
Sure, that’s annoying to a supposed offender who did not violate anyone’s rights or cause damage or injury. What people actually are mad about is that their ability to make their own decision has been stripped.
Why come to a 2 second stop at a sign if there is no other traffic? Why not drive faster if conditions allow it? Who cares if 1 of my 3 brake lights are out? Or I didn’t turn on my lights with my windshield wipers on a bright day in a minor shower?
Adding insult to injury is how people are treated when violating no one else’s rights. Often people are badgered, talked down to, or treated like a felon. People don’t like to be controlled, especially when they don’t think they did anything wrong.
Didn’t do anything wrong you say? Doesn’t matter. Some police just make things up or lie about what the law says.
Modern American policing is quite akin to bullying. The police choose to do this and they earn the hate of their fellow citizens.
Around here the cops are so lazy they just sit around at traffic lights and scan the stopped cars for expired saaaaafety stickers, don’t even have to chase them down whike they write out “tickets” aka revenue for them.
The main reason policing is a problem is that government is only really good at one thing. Killing people, but it doesn’t want the blood on it’s hands.

I’d like to interject a small dose of reality here for those that long for the “old days” when the “police” seemed like they were our “friends”.
Those days don’t exist, and they are a figment of your imagination. Anyone that believes this is a clear victim of Stockholm Syndrome. The police were, perhaps, less militant in the past, however, their origins, their TRUE origins, have literally NOTHING to do with protecting the people at large or in general.
Police Departments were started in big cities (Boston, I believe, was the first) and the ENTIRETY of their purpose was to protect the power of big business and industry (in many cases, big jewish business, but not always) and, secondarily, the power of the state. At no point in the history of the “police” has any benevolent, angelic saint created a police department to protect the people. It has never happened in the past, it clearly isn’t now, and never will be in the future. Point blank, the police have ALWAYS been the enemy of the people and the source of the state’s monopoly on violence. Any view that identifies them as the “friends” of the people is 100% incorrect. This isn’t subjective, either, it’s supported by supreme court decisions…several of them, in fact:
Town of Castle Rock v. Gonzales (2005): The Supreme Court ruled 7–2 that a woman had no constitutional or procedural due process right to police enforcement of a restraining order, even when the order used mandatory language directing officers to arrest violators.
DeShaney v. Winnebago County (1989): The Supreme Court held that the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment does not impose a special duty on the state/government to provide members of the public with adequate protective services, ruling that the state had no constitutional duty to protect a young boy from severe abuse by his father.
And my favorite:
Warren v. District of Columbia (1981): Frequently cited alongside these supreme court cases, a D.C. local appellate court established the “public duty doctrine,” affirming that the general duty of police is to protect the public at large rather than specific individuals, unless a “special relationship” (such as a person being actively held in police custody) is created. Which is to say that the police have, IN GENERAL, a “duty to protect”, but can’t be sued for failure of this. Literally, you can call the police screaming bloody murder and they can simply not respond, and even if it results in your death, THEY CAN’T BE SUED.
Everything we hate – open borders, streams of browns, LGBTQ crap in schools (and everywhere else), brainwashing in schools, property taxes, feminism, globalism, satanism, jews, corporate protection rackets, zero accountability for big pharma or Epstein island perps, and a few dozen other things I could mention, ARE WHAT THE POLICE ACTIVELY PROTECT. If you go try to smash a few heads at an LGBTQ, Antifa, or BLM rally? It’s the POLICE that will protect THEM from YOU. They will, of course, watch you get your head smashed with glee. Because the “police” do exactly what they’re told, when they’re told. And that’s what they’re told to do.
They have a test in place that all police take called the MMPI, or Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Index. It’s what they CLAIM is to prevent “crazy cops from running around with guns”. We’ve all seen enough to know that the reason we’re given for the MMPI must be totally false, and it is.
The MMPI actually tests for people who have below-average empathy (empathizing with the people whose lives you’re about to ruin isn’t productive) and who have below-average intelligence. They want people who are just smart enough to fill out the paperwork and drive the cars, but who aren’t smart enough to figure out what they’re doing is unlawful or unconstitutional. This is why if you ask any (and I do mean ANY) police officer out there what other skills they have, they will have NONE. There are no cops out there that are doctors, engineers, carpenters, machinists, mechanics, electricians, plumbers, teachers, chemists, or anything else. Cops have zero skills outside of following orders and giving abuse to people. The notion that they ‘work for us’ or are ‘duty bound to protect us’ is a complete falsehood and this is backed up by both case law as well as innumerable JewTube videos.
The police aren’t our friends. The police have NEVER been our friends. Everyone that thinks that, welcome to FINALLY waking up from your Stockholm Syndrome DELUSION. That’s all it has ever been, a delusion. They are the monopolistic arbiters of violence and misery, and they are in place to keep US under control. Period. Always have been, always will be.

I have known some exceptions. Starting with my Dad, who was a State Trooper from about 1951 until his (then) mandatory retirement at age 55 in 1975.
Before he became a trooper at about age 30 he had been something of a jack of all trades. He was a reader. He subscribed to multiple periodicals including Popular Mechanics and Popular Science.
He was a pretty fair carpenter, mechanic, electrician, and plumber.He was quite good at repairing things, and at making things.
He continued to be after his retirement in 1975. In the spring of 1976 he single-handedly built a new room onto our house. He enclosed the carport and turned it and what had been the utility room into a sort of combination TV room or family room and laundry room.
He did all the carpentry, bricklaying. roofing, wiring, and plumbing himself. And it all worked fine.
The following year he went to work at first one, then another local tobacco “re-dryer” (processing plant) as a general handyman, and stayed on in that capacity until 1985 or 1986.
He was an extravagantly kindly man. He once once spent a big part of a day at work freeing a puppy that had gotten its head trapped inside a ceramic pipe.
During his trooper days (c.1951-1975) he was known for NOT being a hardass. When he saw someone broken down on the side of the road with car trouble he would stop and help them, or try to. *Not* just to look for something to bust them for.(Maybe that’s why he never attained any higher rank than just a road trooper.)
He never shot anyone, and only fired his weapon (a riot shotgun) on two occasions. Once a warning shot over the heads of a mob of striking miners who were advancing on him (he was alone) with various clubs, pickaxes, etc. They say warning shots are no good, but in this case it got the desired effect : they backed off.
The other time was when he help[ed provide suppressing fire at a barricaded gunman as paramedics were going to get a wounded sheriff’s deputy lying on the porch of the man who had shot him. The guy later shot himself.
Meanwhile my grandfather, *his* father-in-law, who could be described as a gentleman farmer, had been with the old Highway Patrol before it became the Kentucky State Police in 1948, then became the sheriff of the adjacent county in the late 1950s (around the time I was born).
As sheriff he never wore any sort of uniform, much less combat fatigues. He just wore a suit and tie and hat. He had a gun — a snubnosed .38 revolver — but he kept it concealed under his coat. You had to be doing something *real* bad to ever see it. As far as I know he was well-respected.
I remember him as a humble, unassuming, even self-effacing man. Altogether rather like the sheriff in the film version of _To Kill A Mockingbird_.
One of his other son’s-in -law, my uncle, was his head deputy. In private life he was a butcher, and a good one.
So, I grew up in a cop household, or cop family. Neither my Dad, my grandfather, nor my uncle were ever abusive toward me. I guess that gave me a different perspective on things.I spent some of the happiest days of childhood and youth on my grandfather’s farm, or estate, if you want to call it that.
Much of it was wooded, valuable old growth timber, but he never let it be logged. He wanted to hunt there.The rest of his acreage was alternately used to plant crops (corn, soybeans, etc,) and to graze cattle on. He rented the land out to others for that.
He had not much formal education but was literate and had many books, including a set of encyclopedias.
So in my childhood and youth I was viewed rather askance by my schoolmates, who by the early or mid-1970s were nearly all potheads.
I was not. And to me cops were not alien or exotic or threatening. I was regarded as altogether *too* friendly with a few of the local city cops. Yes, I really *did* have cop friends, or at least friendly acquaintances.
Therefore I was generally considered to be a “narc,” and as such to be not only shunned and ostracized by, well, *everyone*, but also fair game for all manner of bullying, harassment, vandalism and sabotage of my car once I had one, and even not-infrequent violent attacks on my person by complete strangers, who I assume were put up to it with cash or pot bribes, or sexual favors.
All that gave me different perspective too.

However, around 1986-1987 I ceased to have any cop friends anymore. I hadn’t changed — *they* had. These guys were nothing at all like my Dad, grandfather, or uncle, or the few cop friends I’d had earlier.
And these days I feel about the same as you and Eric about them. I have as little as humanly possible to do with them.
The most “anti-cop” people I’ve known are the former cops who see what cops have become.
Yes. I guess that’s me. I’ll be 70 in January and until pretty recently people still asked why I never tried to follow my father’s footsteps into some sort of law enforcement job or career. The simplest answer is: I just didn’t want to. So many of the laws on the books seemed so wrong — so stupid or even evil. Why would I want any part of enforcing them?
Yeah, I was a sort of “rent-a-cop” once in 1979. But I had no real powers of arrest beyond what any citizen has. I was not authorized to be armed. And 90-plus percent of what I did could be described as a night watchman or gate keeper.

Sure, you always had cops that loved any chance to give a wood shampoo but, it was Ronald Reagan that said, “Hold my beer”.
When he enacted his version of the war on some drugs he hooked the military up with local cops. The 1033 program broke down the barriers. It gave us, as Radly Balko wrote decades ago, The Rise of the Warrior Cop.

Then after 9/11 and the War on Terror™ as the troops came back they got pushed to the front of the line for civil policing. Many of them were trained as MPs or to guard a position in an “urban” environment. But that environment was also an active war zone, with guerrilla warriors in plain clothes doing the fighting, IEDs disguised to look like trash piles, and constant reports of random attacks on convoys and troop movements. All that big iron hardware was worthless. All the bombing and infrastructure elimination didn’t stop them.
Now bring that guy home, put him in a bad part of LA or Chicago (with a lot of trash laying around, gang warfare, and basically everything but you being the target) and that’s got to weigh on you. And like the war, you’re not allowed to take action until HQ (CENTCOM, Dispatch) says so.

The Reagan administration introduced so much authoritarian bad shit it is hard to know where to start yet so many “conservatives” still pretty much worship the man. While locking up hundreds of thousands of US citizens for possession of of small amounts of drugs the government did not approve of, it was also IMPORTING many of said drugs to fund its favored mercenaries abroad-the Contras, the Mujahadeen, and how many we don’t know about.
The US has been an authoritarian nightmare going back to the Prohibition era if not before but only now is more than a small minority waking up to it.
From what I understand, the War On (some) Drugs™ was started by Nixon. Many say as payback for not fighting in Vietnam. Some say because draft age young men wouldn’t fight because of the drugs.
They won’t go fight? Bring the war to them, I guess.
It really started with the Pure Food & Drug Act of 1906. It criminalized opiates and created prescriptioning. It was a Progressive Era Crown Jewel. GovCo now controls “drugs”…even though opium is a natural plant.
And that’s what really drives it all, the criminalization of roughly a half-dozen naturally occurring plants. It’s practically a given that any chemical compound that anyone can whip up is subject to control by Fed GovCo if it can alter one’s mental state. Where that authority is established in the sacred Constitution is anyone’s guess.
Erhlichman was quoted as admitting the Drug War was a scam, a way to punish Nixon’s political enemies, namely, blacks and the antiwar counterculture.
Nixon may have started the War on Drugs but the Reagan administration put it into hyperdrive. So “Just Say No” while the administration’s favorite mercenaries a/k/a the “Contras” are running cocaine in cooperation with the CIA? Laws don’t seem to matter when it is the government favored entities doing it.

Yup – and it wasn’t all that long ago. What changed? Well, policing got militarized. Cops are encouraged to regard all of us “civilians” as “threats to their safety.” They dress like SEALs and when you LARP, you tend to LARP. Only in this case, the guns are real. Also, of course, the laws have become petty and tyrannical. Back in 1980 if you weren’t a criminal or doing something to cause a cop to legitimately think you might be – you were unworried about cops because they generally didn’t hassle people who weren’t crimninals. Maybe you got pulled over for “speeding,” sure. But that was understood to be a petty and generally bullshit offense and the cops didn’t treat you like a criminal over that. You could argue with them, even – and it was unheard of them for to draw a gun on you for arguing over a traffic ticket. You didn’t have to “buckle up” and they couldn’t hassle you if you didn’t. You could even drink a beer on the way home and that wasn’t cause for a Hut! Hut! Hutting!
I disagree about the “good ol’ days” when the cops were supposedly the “good guys.”
Maybe that was true in some jurisdictions, like the fictional Mayberry. But big city cops were notoriously corrupt. Framing people was commonplace. Cops carrying a “drop gun” in the event they shot someone who turned out to be unarmed was routine. Beating the fuck out of people was routine. So was taking bribes. Cops absolutely put innocent people in prison for decades on circumstantial “evidence” and speculation before DNA analysis at crime scenes became common.
When Teddy Roosevelt was head of the NYC Board of Police Commissioners he made fighting corruption a Number One priority. That was in 1895.
The Serpico case and the Knapp Commission of the 1970s was proof that TR had failed.
What is different today is that there are more cops, so they are more difficult to avoid, and they are more highly paid and their departments are lavishly funded. Police bureaucracies are more entrenched and yes, militarized. Back in the day cops were low-paid political hacks who got their jobs due to nepotism or political connections. The only restraining factor was the bad press that their political benefactors would get if they went too far, so it was up to the political machines to keep them in line, not the courts.
Remember, that prior to the criminal justice cases of the 1950s and 1960s like Miranda, the cops could (and did) use pressure tactics and beat the fuck out of you to coerce false confessions, deny you a lawyer, obtain evidence without a warrant, and eavesdrop on phone calls at the old telephone switchboards.
Back in the day cops carried brass knuckles and saps and would break your skull if you lipped off to them.

To be clear, I never said that cops were “good guys.” I merely said that I can remember when they weren’t tatted-up, jacked-up, suited-up thugs itching to escalate to murder over a traffic ticket. They were agents of the state, no doubt – but for the most part, the interactions were kind of like interacting with any other government bureaucrat. Not pleasant, of course. But far from the screaming at you/guns pointed at you Hut! Hut! Hut! of today.
True. They were meatheaded goons serving urban political machines in patronage appointments, but at least that to observe the pretense of decorum to keep up apprerances for their political masters.
Kinda like the way even the Mafia hit men wore suits and ties and dress shoes.

My really short, red-haired, freckled classmate’s laminated paper DL said he was 27 years old in 11th grade, after he took a xerox of his birth certificate and one or two other documents to the Greensboro, NC, DMV, in 1987. Everybody laughed at the name he chose – Joe Lee Fox. But DMV caught on pretty soon after and xeroxes were not allowed. Our fake IDs weren’t fake though.
