How Not to Run From a Cop

If you’re going to run from a cop, it’s best to know how to do that. Here’s an example of what not to do. It’s a video of a guy on a Harley – never try to get away from a cop on a Harley – trying to get away from a cop who came after him because the guy decided to ride on the shoulder to get around traffic:

We quickly see he lacked the skills to be riding – period.

Despite the huge advantage of being on a bike, which (if it’s not a Harley) is far more agile than any car and much quicker and faster than a cop car (if it’s not a Harley) and having the advantage of heavy traffic, which a motorcycle rider can use to put distance between himself and a cop (which is the key to “getting away” with running from a cop) this guy makes the mistake of trying to run on a Harley, which has neither advantage.

Also, he just can’t ride.

At one point, despite the rider’s ineptitude, traffic obliges – and Our Man does put distance between himself and the cop trying to catch him – but Our Man doesn’t make use of that advantage by disappearing, which is the key to “getting away” with running from a cop. It is imperative to do this quickly, too – because the longer the chase goes on, the greater the odds it won’t end well. This is why you never run from a cop if you’re riding a Harley or any other slow bike. You only run from a cop if you’re riding a bike that has explosive acceleration and a top speed that’s higher than the cop car’s top speed – so at least 150 MPH.

Battleships can’t outrun destroyers.

If the cop never gets close enough to see your plates, he can’t tell who you are. If the pursuing cop loses visual contact, he can no longer be sure of exactly where you are. Once you have that advantage, it is imperative to make use of it by getting off the road you’re one and onto another one (and then another after that) and then disappearing from the face of the Earth. The more possibilities the cop has to pick from, the better the odds are for the person trying to “get away.”

Pro tip: Do not take the first exit or turn-off; that is the fear move. Clench your cheeks and take the next one. This will greatly increase the odds that the pursuing cop takes the wrong one. If he does, your chances of “getting away” go up hugely because with each passing second, you are farther away from his clutches. He’ll either keep going the wrong way or – after it hits him that he chose the wrong way – he’ll turn around and go back the other direction, trying to re-establish contact. By this time, you are probably safe. If you’re smart enough to get off the road and disappear.

You must find a place to hide – both yourself and your machine. Just like the cops do, eh?

You need to find a place where you can hunker down for the couple of hours it will take for the angry hornet’s nest of cops (plural, at this point) to cease buzzing and (eventually) head back to their nest. The important thing – the essential thing – is to get out of sight. Do not try to get back home unless you are near-certain you can get there via back roads that are unlikely to have hornets buzzing around. In the country, this is possible. In urban/suburban scenes, it usually is not. You want a side street/alley or parking garage – anywhere you and your machine can sort of blend in for a few hours. That’s usually enough time for things to cool down.

This rider – if you want to call him that – did not understand any of these things. Nor – as is obvious, from watching his embarrassingly inept attempt to “get away” – did he know how to ride, which is a kind of prerequisite skill to have if you want to try to “get away” with running from a cop. The guy couldn’t even lean – a basic riding skill. Toward the end, you see him pathetically trying to negotiate a low-speed curve with his right foot out, because he was afraid to lean. The chase concludes when the fool ineptly tries to get around a car blocking his way and he runs right into it, instead. He ends up charged with various felonies and misdemeanors but his greatest crime is that had no business being on a bike in the first place, let alone trying to “get away” from a cop on one.

Oh, yes. Almost forgot.

Why would anyone want to “get away” from a cop? Well, why does any hunted animal want to “get away” from whatever’s hunting it? Did people back in the day try to get away from what were called Highwaymen?

It’s a natural and healthy instinct. Of course, two-legged animals are taught it’s the right thing to do to just “pull over” and make it easier on the hunter/Highwayman. It’s astounding, isn’t it?

They can’t train rabbits to behave this way. But humans? Such is the fate of animals whose instincts have been dulled to such an extent that they practically gut and dress themselves.

  1. Your tax money hard at work. Brave hero pig truly endangers hundreds of lives by inventing “crime” where none exists, because Zyou MUST follow zee rules!”. One wrong move by any one of the innocent motorists could have caused them serious injury or death. The motorcyclist was not a “threat” to anyone.
And in fairness to the rider: He really had nowhere to go when he had the brief distance early on. It was just a bad decision to try to get away from state’s mercenary….but perfectly understandable, as Eric mentioned, as it is normal human instinct, just as it would be if David Berkowitz or Jeffery Dahmer were on your tail; even more so, because at least there’s a chance that those two could be reasoned with, and that they likely weren’t trained in IDF tactics. Although either one of them would be more intelligent than the pig.

  2. Devil’s Advocate here.

Face it, you have little chance in outrunning most cops if you’re not on a sport bike. It’s tough to hide a Bugatti Veyron.

On the other hand it’s best to be somewhat compliant lest you get shot. Compliance is not endorsement or agreement. These thugs are on a hair trigger, don’t give them a reason.

I got pulled a couple weeks ago for “doing nearly 60 in a 45” and only got a “warning”. I told him I thought it was 55. Not until the bridge at the BOTTOM of the hill. It was Kabuki theater at its finest.

First time in 23 years. Took a trip out west last fall and averaged 67mph over ~4k miles for the entire trip which included driving around looking for our hotels and such.

  3. It’s not the Harley’s fault, it’s the dipshit riding it. I know you boy like your gook bikes but this mongoloid is a poor example.

  4. The cop should not have pursued in such heavy traffic, the cop was himself a reckless driver endangering everyone including the suspect. If it’s not ok for what the harley rider was doing, then how is it justified the cop is doing it over the speed limit?

    • In Oregon, or at least in my area, the cops are told not to pursue and encourage high speed chase. Smart. Orange County dumb.

  5. You can’t lean far enough on most Harleys without something hitting the road. Sure the V twin has a slim profile, but then you have the transmission and primary drive.

Few that I’ve seen around here lean in corners or at lights. Could be lack of skill and practice. But they are the first I see to put the feet down, which is a super bad move. What do they hope to accomplish with a heavy bike moving at speed with that maneuver?

I did that early on in my riding career, my foot slapped the pavement and shot backwards. I was lucky I didn’t break my foot, ankle, or dump the bike. You aren’t on a dirt track don’t do it.

As far as running from a cop, if you don’t have the bike or the skill, take the “L”. The one that’s coming your way if you run is far worse. It helps to know the area too. In this guy’s case on that wide open interstate, I’d say when you are far enough ahead, do a u turn across the median, open it up, and get on an exit before the cop knows what’s happening.

    • On my “Harley style bike” that I rode for many years, the foot floorboards were the first thing to scrape in a lean. It was very jarring until I got used to it. The boards were hinged with springs to give a little when doing so.

    • Hi iggy –

Yeah, I’m with you on lane splitting. Even if it’s legal, I would not do it. Very little margin of error. It’s kind of like Isle of Man except slower speeds – but similar consequences.

  6. I have a few thoughts.
If you’re going to ride, learn how to ride and keep learning.
Cops are scum and what this one did was very scummy.
Traffic infractions are rule breaking and not real crimes. Unless there is injury or damage, there should never be a fine or penalty. Especially including things like dui.
If you’re going to run, be sincere and also be ready to fight to the death.

At my age I’ve learned to avoid traffic cops and just where and how much I can ignore their BS rules. And I do, because there are many other laws which demand breaking for a free man. When law becomes tyranny, rebellion becomes duty.

  7. Most of these bad boy Harley drivers do need training wheels! Telltale; Making right turns moving or from a stop. They can only go fast going straight (sarc). Ha!

  8. That guy sucks, low IQ activity. Personally I would ride the shoulder slow in summer traffic on my old SOHC CB 750 to keep it from overheating. That bike was not made to idle stop and go in 85+ heat without wind (er- with the performance mods I did that make it run hotter). If I get pulled over, I’d explain its either ride slow for some cooling air, or stop and shut the bike off in that lane and wait to cool for a few minutes. Either way, I’d be in the shoulder and moving 15-20mph is arguably safer. There’s a good chance to get off with nothing in that case. But that is police discretion and that explanation would likely go over well with a judge too, as arguably you would not be in the shoulder if not for the overheating condition. Automated cameras may just mail a ticket in the future. This guy turned a warning or possible ticket into an arrest and a wrecked bike.

  9. The cop’s actions were worse than the rider’s and put innocent people in danger. The rider’s actions, which could be considered slightly retarded (riding on the shoulder to bypass traffic), did not cause harm until the rider crashed due to being pursued.

    • You ever watch the police pursuit videos, the cops are chasing the drivers like they just killed all of Congress? The high level of danger involved for a failure to stop is insane.

      • The chase for killing the guy who wiped out the US Congress, Ala the Martian in “Mars Attacks” (Ack-Ack!) would be justified if the cop were trying to pun a MEDAL on him.

  10. It is pretty funny to see him make the turn with his foot out. The worst part is that he couldn’t navigate around the car parked on the shoulder and ran right it. It was probably his first time trying to escape the cops so he didn’t know what he was doing. At least he tried. He must be commended for that.

  11. Riding on the shoulder was stylized a “crime”? Not worth getting killed by agw’s –not withstanding the fact a heavy po po cruiser is much more dangerous on the shoulder than a fat boy.

    • Probably just a ticket. Running from the cops is a crime, though.

Probably not the “hill you want to die on” unless you’ve got warrants…

  12. In the rare instances when selfish jerks got nabbed bypassing perpetually-jammed traffic on the right shoulder of NYC’s shabby expressways, I laffed in exultant schadenfreude.

But when the public has been simplistically drilled to ‘pull over’ [to the right] for emergency vehicles, it was insanely dangerous for the Floriduh pigman to blast past dozens of vehicles from the unexpected direction of the right shoulder at 100 mph.

A pox on both their houses … and Hardly Ableson too. Ship of fools …
