The Antidote to Paralysis

Something many of us have in common right now is a feeling of powerlessness – which can manifest as paralysis.

People on the red side of the aisle – loosely speaking, the vaguely congruent confluence of conservatives and libertarians and independents who Voted Harder for Trump in 2024 – are coming to terms (most of them) with the hard truth that we’re not going to vote our way out of this. Trump ran – three times – on an explicit “drain the swamp” agenda, which was hugely attractive to millions of people, who voted for that three times. This last time, a convincing win happened. Not only did Trump himself win, so did the “drain the swamp” movement. It effectively controlled not just the executive but also the legislative branch and – far more important, it had the mojo. The momentum. The blues were in more than just disarray; they were beaten, spent.

There was nothing that could have stopped Trump and the drain the swamp movement – except for Trump himself. He stopped it. The red party hacks have enabled it, apologized for it and – most important – done nothing to stop it. This has made it clear there’s no point in Voting Harder to drain the swamp.

It will never be drained this way.

The blues on the other side of the aisle now smack their lips at what appears to be an impending resurrection of their power, courtesy of Trump. It is a replay of the 2024 beclowning but it’ll take a while for the blues to realize they’ve been beclowned, too. Probably not as long, though – as there simply isn’t time for that anymore. Things aren’t going to wait is another way to put that. Just as Trump did, the blue clowns will make lots of extravagant promises they’ll betray. Israel will remain Our Greatest Ally. The cost of everything will remain high – and get even higher. There will be some clowning along the edges of the three-ring circus, as there has been with the Trump Show. Instead of Elon Musk pretending to make government more “efficient” – which is not quite the same thing as less government –  we’ll probably get a resumption of the LGBTQ+ show and the DEI show but it’s all the same show.

That’s the key thing to understand – and that understanding is (at last!) spreading. That voting is – as one of my readers put it – something like writing a letter to Santa Claus. So let’s stop writing him, eh?

Instead of expecting to be led, how about we lead ourselves? It’s a degradation to believe yourself to be helpless and thus in need of the kind of “help” the government provides, which is never benevolent and always comes with strings attached. We can lean on one another at times and receive honest help, which is freely given and thus actually motivated by benevolence. But much more important is that we relearn how to stand up straight ourselves, so as to not have to lean on others – much less mewl for a benevolence from grifters and glad-handers who feign benevolence as a tool to advance themselves. Never trust a man who says he’s going to “help” you with someone else’s money. You may get some, of course – but in the end you’re going to get something else, too.

Most of us aren’t cripples – either in body or in mind. We can do things. We can learn how to do things. We are not, in a word, helpless – much as the grifters and glad-handers of the red and blue would like to convince us we are.

The key to ending paralysis is to get moving. Stop waiting for them to “help” you, because it isn’t coming and even if it did, it’s not the kind of help you want. Unless you prefer being helpless. Unless you want to wait to be told what to do by people who not only don’t care about you, they couldn’t care about you.

The don’t even know who you are. And if they did, they’d only care about how useful you might be to them.

Imagine if most of us not only just stayed home on election day, but tended to our own affairs every day.

It’d be more effective than Voting Harder (again) and getting rolled (again).
