Here’s an interesting story that in many ways is the same old story:
A Missouri State Trooper named Ethan Minge allegedly raped a woman and though arrested and charged, still has his job. He is “on leave without pay.” He is also out on bond, because the court set that at just $10,000 – meaning he only needed to come up with $1,000 to get out of jail – literally.
This indulgence appears to be one uniquely afforded to what is styled law enforcement. The italics are deployed to highlight something worth noticing; that being the nihilism of enforcing laws just because they are laws. There is nothing nuanced in the term. No room for the exercise of judgment. Arguably, the very last thing that is wanted in law enforcement is the exercise of judgment, as that could be at odds with enforcing the law.
What is wanted is a kind of mindless bulldogging. Bite the prey and do not let go. Sometimes, the bulldog bites his owner, a fact worth considering.
At any rate, the Missouri law enforcer reportedly came to the victim’s residence and “attempted to initiate sex.” The victim “told investigators she repeatedly said no, but Minge allegedly persisted, pushed her onto her back, and had intercourse with her without her consent. The following day, according to the affidavit, Minge texted the woman acknowledging she had told him no and apologized for what happened.”
Here is what the Missouri Highway Patrol had to say, in a statement released to media:
We are aware of the arrest of Trooper Ethan Minge following a criminal investigation by the West Plains Police Department. Minge joined the Patrol in January 2024 and assigned to Troop G. In accordance with Patrol policy, our Professional Standards Division has been notified of the incident. While the administrative review process continues, Trooper Minge is on administrative leave with no pay, effective December 9. As this involves an ongoing criminal case, we are currently unable to release further details specifically about this incident.
Note that he is still given the honorific, Trooper Minge. This notwithstanding he effectively admitted to rape, texting the victim the next day to apologize. But did he arrest himself? Ought he not to have turned himself in before the victim called in the crime? Would he have owned up, had she not?
Some reading this will take issue and say it is unfair to hold a law enforcer to such a standard. They miss the point, which is just that; i.e., a higher standard ought to apply to law enforcement because they literally ought to know the law and because they ought to know when they break it. More fundamentally, the rest of us ought to be able to rest easy knowing that anyone given a badge and a gun and the authority to use them is a person of high standards who will be held to a higher standard.
Since they regularly are not held to a higher standard – are often held to a lower standard – we do not rest easy, because we understand that there isn’t much to dissuade them from using their authority in abusive ways – and getting away with it.

The “thin blue line” takes care of its own.
Not too long ago, a Michigan State Police “stakeout team” ran a stop sign and “t-boned” a driver who had the right-of-way.
The first thing they did was to drag the driver out of his car and handcuff him, showing absolutely no regard for his injuries.
These ‘stake-out team” members attempted to blame the driver of the car they “t-boned” but there was a stationary video camera unknown to them that proved otherwise. This video was made public and showed the “stakeout team” clearly in the wrong.
The story was then buried. There was no further reporting of the actions by these “criminals in blue”.
I hope the driver of the car that they “t-boned” got a nice settlement check from the municipality.

I understand and sympathize with the sentiments expressed in the linked article. Just the other day, while on my way into town, I drove by a local cop who’d snugged his $50,000 taxpayer-financed Ford Explorer SUV off to the side of the road, where he wasn’t easy to see until you were about 50 yards close. I thought to myself: What sort of man is ok with himself sitting in an expensive vehicle paid for by people who were forced to pay for it so that he can force people to hand over more of the money they worked hard to earn, over some pretextual nonsense charge such as “speeding.” Which, of course, the cop will do himself to “pull over” the offender.
Like you, I have no use for cops and therefore do not want to be forced to pay for them. I live in a rural area. If I have to deal with a criminal, I will have to deal with it – because it would take a cop at least 15-30 minutes to get here, depending on how far away he is when the call comes in. By which time the situation will have been resolved.
I am not a criminal – in the sense that I don’t steal or beat people up or otherwise cause anyone any harm. Ergo, I and others like me ought to never have to worry about cops. And yet whenever we see one in our rearview or standing near us, we worry – because we know the system is criminal and can harm us pretty much anytime it wants to.
I am not a “law abiding citizen”. I am however, a peaceful citizen, until provoked.
You leave out that it happened on July 27 (which was a Sunday so maybe Saturday night (?)) and not reported till October 23 (three months). Without the text probably would never be a charge.
July 27th, 2025: “Fatality occurs in Troop G Saturday. Troop G of the Missouri State Highway Patrol recorded a fatality Saturday night, it said. Tpr. Ethan Minge said a westbound 2012 GMC Sierra driven by a 45-year-old Eminence man travelled off the right side of Route 106 and struck a tree at about 8 p.m. The accident was eight miles west of Ellington. A 53-year-old Eminence male passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Coroner Allen Ford. Next of kin has been notified. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, and another male passenger from Beebe, Arkansas, who was not, were flown to Cox South in Springfield with serious injuries.
The vehicle was totaled, Minge said.”

I once knew someone who became a cop and I asked him what didn’t he like about the job. He said cleaning up the car accidents (he’d also had to clean up one suicide where a man shot himself in a kitchen and blood was all over the walls). Minge had only been on the job a little over a year.

I think what you’re suggesting is the situation isn’t as black-and-white?
This trooper seems to have in the late night of July 26 or early morning of July 27 responded to what would seem to anyone with emotion or conscience a terrible crash. Three people in a truck that ran off the road, hit a tree. Driver and rear seat passenger seriously injured, passenger killed. I think we can all imagine the scene.
Later, likely sometime on July 27, trooper took out his grief, rage, PTSD by raping a woman. Not obvious who she is, current or ex-girlfriend. They must have had a relationship since there were texts, so no a random road-side demand. This has no bearing, a rape is a rape.
It does speak to your point that even good people may have limits. Of course Minge made the choice to put himself in the MSHP uniform (and I bet he was a military vet, too) and do the job. I have a lower level of empathy for cops and military who volunteer than the ones who were drafted.
The mental damage doesn’t distinguish how one arrived at it, though. However the harshest of blame I would be sympathetic to putting on the monsters who created the system. In West Plains, MO, there’s not much shaking, not a lot of opportunity to thrive if you’re born into a poor family. So joining the police (or enlisting) can be a way out. Lots of people decide this and get themselves a foot in the door to a better life.
I know plenty of guys who were a couple of years behind me in the USAF and either were still in or got called back for Desert Storm. A couple are still jacked, Gulf War Syndrome. In my time, 86-90, it was like Boy Scout camp. I may have danced with the devil joining but it ended up a good way to get to school and my life would have been radically different otherwise. It didn’t fuck me up other than maybe some close calls with alcohol poisoning.
So I tend to be less judgmental. Minge is a dirt bag. But the system of higher ups looking the other way, the politicians and judges looking the other way, that’s who created this caustic system. Minge is a pawn. Young minds are broken down and rewired to be assholes like this. Many can resist it and heal. Some can’t and never do.

I don’t know anything about the situation and these two were not married. However, it seems they were in a relationship where marital privileges were being exchanged. Used to be wives could not accuse husbands of rape (or vice versa). I was taught to refuse marriage “debt” can be (and usually is) a sin. Maybe they are both better off not marrying each other. But speaking on behalf of him, imo he is better off going to jail and having his reputation ruined than marrying this woman.
Marital rape is a tough one. Marriage is itself a contract, so is sex part of that? It would fall to this under the Biblical definition, it’s kind of a fundamental element to the reason for marriage. Although exactly why varies from strictly procreation to pure enjoyment depending on what you believe. In any case sex is foundational to marriage and traditionally grounds for “breach of contract,” e.g. divorce, annulment, etc.
So it may be better to view rape differently in society. It’s generally not about the act itself but a person or people exerting control over others. This is primarily why prison and torture rape exist. It doesn’t even have to be physical penetration, they used broom sticks and all that in Abu Ghraib and Gitmo, sufficient for the necessary humiliation and pain.
Specific to AGW and Jarheads. Domestic violence is very common. I’d really give serious thought if I were involved, engaged or married to one. Even being in a friendly relationship as buddies you’ll see they flip a switch and it can be terrifying. I had a high school friend who’s dad was broken in Viet Nam. We had a shitacular band back then and he was the drummer. When his old man came home he couldn’t play anymore, the snare would set off his dad big time.

And under Missouri law, theoretically he would also be guilty of Misprision of Felony — because he didn’t report the rape that he committed. That’s another 3 years.
Also, if his being a cop had anything to do with the rape — say, if he was in uniform or armed, or threatened her with arrest, or offered to go easy on her for some alleged violation, etc. — then he could be charged with Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law under 18 U.S. Code § 242. That carries a fine and up to 10 years in prison, and if rape constitutes “aggravated sexual abuse”, then the penalty is a fine and up to life in prison, or death.
I will bet you nine to nothin’ that this reprobate sees a far less severe punishment than any mere mundane “civilian” would see if guilty of the same heinous crime.
Hopefully the prosecution will be able to keep AGWs off of the jury. I hope they can keep the jackboot-licking Baptists off, too.

The double (lesser) standard is well-documented because it’s general. Even to the petty extent. I witness cops “speeding” almost every day. I do not find fault with this when it is done by anyone else, because “speeding” – as such – is a victimless crime and therefore not criminal. But it grates to see law enforcers who enforce the speed limit speeding, without any worries about being hassled or mulcted over it.
Dark morning on the way to work, could tell it was a County Mountie behind me on my rural road. I did about 2 over steady Eddie. The rat bastard passed me using the turn lane at an intersection totally reckless driving. No lights, no siren. Made sure to keep track of his progress, sure enough he turned into the County Cop Shop parking lot four miles on. I reported it course nothing happened – even worse the excuse “we wouldn’t be able to tell who was in that unit.” BS, you know who takes a cruiser home at night 5 miles south of the cop shop.
Yep. And it’s not only general; it’s also overt. Here in South Carolina — and, I suspect, in about 49 other states — assaulting a police officer is specifically a felony. But assaulting a plumber or a preacher or a piano teacher isn’t. Our State Constitution declares that no person shall be denied the equal protection of the laws. But obviously cops are more equal than we mere mundanes are.
